Will I get fat? 22-year weight trajectories of individuals with eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: For some, fat phobia or fear of uncontrollable weight gain is diagnostic of eating disorders, often inhibiting treatment engagement and predicting symptom relapse. Prior research has reported weight changes at infrequent or long intervals, but rate, shape, and magnitude of long-term changes remain unknown. Our study examined 22-year longitudinal trajectories of body mass index (BMI) in women with anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). METHOD: Participants were followed over 10 years (N = 225) and at 22-year follow-up (N = 175). Using latent growth curves, we examined: (1)

Short-term exercise combined with Acipimox administration induces an increase in plasma ACTH and its subsequent fall in the recovery phase in bulimic women.

OBJECTIVE: Free fatty acids (FFA)-adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) feedback loop between adipose tissue and the hypothalamic-pituitary centers in the brain has been suggested to be affected by the exercise and by administration of anti-lipolytic drugs. Also leptin may be affected by exercise. Dysfunction of FFA-leptin-ACTH secretion might be involved in binge eating and subsequent purging as is the case in bulimia nervosa (BN). METHODS: In the present single-blind, randomized study, we explored responses of plasma ACTH, leptin and FFA concentrations to exercise (45 min, 2 W/kg of lean body mass [LB

Unconventional Applications of Semaglutide and Tirzepatide: From Oncology to Human Reproduction.

Semaglutide and tirzepatide, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/GLP-1 receptor agonists, respectively, have revolutionized the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. Beyond their established metabolic indications, emerging preclinical and clinical evidence suggests these incretin-based therapies exert pleiotropic effects across multiple organ systems through mechanisms extending beyond glycemic control and weight reduction. This comprehensive review synthesizes current evidence for unconventional applications of semaglutide

Bulimia Nervosa and Risk of Cardiovascular Outcomes: A Longitudinal Matched Cohort Study in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVE: Bulimia nervosa (BN), a prevalent eating disorder characterized by recurrent binge-purge cycles, may contribute to long-term cardiovascular (CV) complications. However, evidence regarding these outcomes remains limited. This study investigated CV risks in patients with BN and the risk trajectory across varying follow-up periods by using a nationwide Taiwanese cohort. METHODS: Data from the National Health Insurance Research Database (2010-2022) were analyzed. Patients with BN aged 10-59 years were matched with controls at a 1:10 ratio on the basis of sex, age, socioeconomic status,

Characterizing eating disorder diagnosis and related outcomes by sexual orientation and gender identity in a national sample of college students.

OBJECTIVE: In a national sample of college students, the current study aimed to: 1) examine differences in probable diagnoses of EDs (i.e., anorexia nervosa (AN), clinical/subthreshold bulimia nervosa (BN), or binge eating disorder (BED)) and weight and shape concerns by sexual orientation and gender identity, and 2) examine differences in ED chronicity and probable comorbid psychiatric diagnoses by sexual orientation and gender identity. METHOD: Students across nine U.S. universities completed an online screener for DSM-5 clinical or subthreshold ED diagnoses, comorbid depression and anxiety

T-wave morphology among medically treated patients with Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) has the highest rate of mortality of any psychiatric disorder, and cardiovascular complications occur in up to 80% of patients with AN and account for up to 30% of mortality. A controversy exists as to whether patients with AN are prone to develop electrocardiographic abnormalities related to repolarization. We aim to study previously unexplored T wave morphology markers in medically-treated patients with AN. Fifty-eight patients with AN (32 with restricting type and 26 with binge-eating/purging type) and 82 healthy controls were included in the study. ECGs were conducted

The role of a multidisciplinary approach in the choice of the best surgery approach in a super-super-obesity case.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease caused by a combination of hereditary, metabolic, dietary, cultural, social and psychological factors. Conservative treatments, such as diet and physical exercises, revealed a lack of long-term efficacy in patients with an extremely high BMI (>60 kg/m(2)). METHODS: We present a multidisciplinary approach in a patient with an extremely high BMI: a twenty-one years old woman with a BMI 102 kg/m(2) (body weight 313 kg × height 175 cm) disabled to walk with severe depression and a psychological pattern of sweet eater and binge eating disor

Anorexia nervosa depends on adrenal sympathetic hyperactivity: opposite neuroautonomic profile of hyperinsulinism syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to determine the central and peripheral autonomic nervous system profiles underlying anorexia nervosa (AN) syndrome, given that affected patients present with the opposite clinical profile to that seen in the hyperinsulinism syndrome. DESIGN: We measured blood pressure and heart rate, as well as circulating neurotransmitters (noradrenaline, adrenaline, dopamine, plasma serotonin, and platelet serotonin), using high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection, during supine resting, one minute of orthostasis, and after five minutes of ex

Altered reward processing in women recovered from anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with anorexia nervosa are known to be ascetic and able to sustain self-denial of food as well as most comforts and pleasures in life. Building on previous findings of altered striatal dopamine binding in anorexia nervosa, the authors sought to assess the response of the anterior ventral striatum to reward and loss in this disorder. METHOD: Striatal responses to a simple monetary reward task were investigated using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging. To avoid the confounding effects of malnutrition, the authors compared 13 healthy comparison women and 13

Impulse control disorders in Parkinson's disease.

Impulse control disorders (ICD) are frequent side effects of dopamine replacement therapy (DRT) used in Parkinson's disease (PD) with devastating consequences on the patients and caregivers. ICD are behavioural addictions including compulsive gambling, shopping, sexual behaviour, and binge eating that are mainly associated with dopamine D2/D3 agonists. Their management is a real clinical challenge due to the lack of therapeutic alternative. Clinical studies have identified demographic and clinical risk factors for ICD such as younger age at disease onset, male gender, prior history of depressi

Eating disorder behaviours amongst adolescents: investigating classification, persistence and prospective associations with adverse outcomes using latent class models.

Diagnostic criteria for eating disorders (ED) remain largely based on clinical presentations, but do not capture the full range of behaviours in the population. We aimed to derive an empirically based ED behaviour classification using behavioural and body mass index (BMI) indicators at three time-points in adolescence, and to validate classes investigating prospective associations with adverse outcomes. Adolescents from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) provided data on ED at age 14 (n = 6615), 16 (n = 5888), and 18 years (n = 5100), and had weight and height measure

Differences in set-shifting and central coherence across anorexia nervosa subtypes in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Regarding executive functioning in anorexia nervosa (AN), little is known about differences between the restricting (AN-R) and binge eating/purging (AN-BP) subtypes. Especially for adolescents, there is sparse data. Hence, the current aim is to investigate differences in set-shifting, central coherence, and self-reported executive functioning across adolescent AN subtypes. METHODS: Ninety AN-R, 21 AN-BP, and 63 controls completed an extensive assessment battery including neuropsychological tests for executive functioning and the self-report questionnaire Behavior Rating Inventory o

Examining social support, rumination, and optimism in relation to binge eating among Caucasian and African-American college women.

PURPOSE: Binge eating is a significant concern among college age women-both Caucasian and African-American women. Research has shown that social support, coping, and optimism are associated with engaging in fewer negative health behaviors including binge eating among college students. However, the impact of sources of social support (i.e., support from family, friends, and a special person), rumination, and optimism on binge eating as a function of race/ethnicity has received less attention. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between social support, rumination, and optimi

Greater anterior cingulate activation and connectivity in response to visual and auditory high-calorie food cues in binge eating: Preliminary findings.

Obese individuals show altered neural responses to high-calorie food cues. Individuals with binge eating [BE], who exhibit heightened impulsivity and emotionality, may show a related but distinct pattern of irregular neural responses. However, few neuroimaging studies have compared BE and non-BE groups. To examine neural responses to food cues in BE, 10 women with BE and 10 women without BE (non-BE) who were matched for obesity (5 obese and 5 lean in each group) underwent fMRI scanning during presentation of visual (picture) and auditory (spoken word) cues representing high energy density (ED)

Analysis of nocebo effects of antiepileptic drugs across different conditions.

The aim of this study was to assess the nocebo effect in all randomised controlled trials (RCTs) exploring the effect of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) in the clinical conditions in which these compounds have been studied with the exception of epilepsy. We searched for all double-blind, placebo-controlled trials performed in adult patients, testing AEDs in any clinical condition except epilepsy. The following data were extracted from the placebo arms: the number of randomized patients, the number of patients withdrawing because of adverse effects (AEs), and the number of patients with 11 predefine

Focused vs. Broad enhanced cognitive behavioral therapy for bulimia nervosa with comorbid borderline personality: A randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: A subset of individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN) have borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms, including chronic negative affect and interpersonal problems. These symptoms predict poor BN treatment outcome in some studies. The broad version of Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT-E) was developed to address co-occurring problems that interfere with treatment response. The current study investigated the relative effects, predictors, and moderators of CBT-E for BN with BPD and co-occurring mood/anxiety disorders. METHOD: Fifty patients with BN and threshold or sub-thresho

Premorbid obesity and weight gain velocity: Recovery related outcomes for adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa 1 year post inpatient admission.

This retrospective longitudinal study evaluated differences in weight related outcomes post-discharge from an inpatient eating disorder unit among 214 adolescents with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Atypical AN with and without premorbid overweight/obesity. Participants who had premorbid overweight/obesity were more likely to be male, Latino, have longer hospitalizations, and have a diagnosis of AN - Binge Purge type. Participants with premorbid overweight/obesity appeared to have lower relative weight velocity at the 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up assessments compared with participants without pre

Borderline personality disorder and eating disorders are characterized by specific patterns of autistic traits, post-traumatic and catatonic symptoms.

PURPOSE: The present study aims to clarify the relationships between autistic traits, post-traumatic symptoms, and catatonic features in individuals with BPD and FED. Specifically, we sought to identify whether distinct patterns of autistic and trauma-related features characterize these conditions and to examine their predictive role in the development of catatonic manifestations. METHODS: 49 subjects with BPD, 55 subjects with FED, specifically anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN)/binge-eating disorder (BED) and 55 non-clinical subjects (NCs) were recruited and assessed with the Adu

The Role of Emotional Schemas in Binge Eating and Bedtime Procrastination.

Objective: Given the increasing prevalence of binge eating disorder (BED) and bedtime procrastination (BP) among university students, as well as the notable absence of validated Arabic instruments to assess these behaviors, this study aimed to investigate the role of emotional schemas in BED and BP among university students. By examining these emotional schemas, the study sought to shed light on a potential shared underlying mechanism contributing to both BED and BP, and to adapt and validate the Bedtime Procrastination Scale (BPS) for Arabic-speaking populations. Method : Three samples of Ira

Missing not at random intensive longitudinal data with dynamic structural equation models.

Intensive longitudinal designs are increasingly popular for assessing moment-to-moment changes in mood, affect, and interpersonal or health behavior. Compliance in these studies is never perfect given the high frequency of data collection, so missing data are unavoidable. Nonetheless, there is relatively little existing research on missing data within dynamic structural equation models, a recently proposed framework for modeling intensive longitudinal data. The few studies that exist tend to focus on methods appropriate for data that are missing at random (MAR). However, missing not at random
