Ultraviolet B-photoprotection efficiency of mesocosm-enclosed natural phytoplankton communities from different latitudes: Rimouski (Canada) and Ubatuba (Brazil).

Photoprotection against UV-B radiation (UVBR; 280-320 nm) was examined in natural phytoplankton communities from two coastal environments at different latitudes: temperate Rimouski (Canada) and tropical Ubatuba (Brazil). Mesocosm experiments were performed at these sites to examine the response of phytoplankton to increases in UVBR that corresponded to local depletions of 30% and 60% in atmospheric ozone levels (low and high UVBR treatments, respectively). A fluorescence method using a pulse amplitude modulation fluorometer (Xe-PAM, Walz, Germany) with selective UV filters was used to estimate

Conservation of biodiversity of the coastal resources of Sundarbans, Northeast India: an integrated approach through environmental education.

The Indian Sundarbans, a diversified coastal wetland on the southern fringe of the State of West Bengal, harbors a luxuriant biodiversity and acts as a potential refuge of living marine resources. Girdled with thick mangrove foliage, this estuarine delta system offers an excellent nursery ground for most of the brackishwater finfish and shellfish. Since supply of hatchery-produced tiger prawn seed (Penaeus monodon) is highly inadequate in West Bengal, the aquaculture farms of this region largely depend on the supply from natural resources. Being motivated by a regular cash income, the majority

Mode of action of theophylline on sodium efflux in barnacle muscle fibers.

The response of the Na efflux in unpoisoned barnacle fibers to 10 mM theophylline is biphasic; i.e., inhibition is followed by stimulation. The stimulatory response is unaffected by ouabain. Fibers pretreated with ouabain show no transitory inhibition when 10 mM theophylline is applied, but show prompt stimulation the magnitude of which is comparable to that observed with unpoisoned fibers. The same holds true for lower concentrations of theophylline. Prior injection of 500 mM EGTA completely abolishes the biphasic action of 10 mM theophylline. External application of 10 mM theophylline follow

Modulation of carbon-to-nitrogen ratio shapes the microbial ecology in a methanol-fed recirculating marine denitrifying reactor.

BACKGROUND: Nitrate (NO3 -) can accumulate in closed-circuit ecosystems to a toxic level. Adding heterotrophic denitrification process to the water treatment is a strategy to reduce this level. This type of process usually requires the addition of a carbon source. Carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (C/N) is a key parameter known to influence both the function and the activity of microbial communities in bioprocesses. Few studies have examined the influence of C/N on denitrification systems operated under methylotrophic and marine conditions. Here we assessed the influence of C/N (methanol and NO3 -) on

Mesocosm study of PAC-modified clay effects on Karenia brevis cells and toxins, chemical dynamics, and benthic invertebrate physiology.

Modified clay compounds are used globally as a method of controlling harmful algal blooms, and their use is currently under consideration to control Karenia brevis blooms in Florida, USA. In 1400 L mesocosm tanks, chemical dynamics and lethal and sublethal impacts of MC II, a polyaluminum chloride (PAC)-modified kaolinite clay, were evaluated over 72 h on a benthic community representative of Sarasota Bay, which included blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), sea urchin (Lytechinus variegatus), and hard clam (Mercenaria campechiensis). In this experiment, MC II was dosed at 0.2 g L-1 to treat bloom-

Efficacy of H2O2 on the removal kinetics of H2S in saltwater aquaculture systems, and the role of O2 and NO3.

The occurrence of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) represents a challenge for recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) under saline conditions. Even low concentrations of the toxic gas can result in sudden mass mortalities of fish, leading to large economic losses. There is an urgent need for efficient strategies to remove H2S, which can be applied effectively with a short response time, to prevent the risk of H2S-induced casualties. This study examines the kinetics of the two common oxidants applied to rearing water in a RAS facility; oxygen (O2) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and evaluates their efficien

Urban stormwater and crude oil injury pathways converge on the developing heart of a shore-spawning marine forage fish.

Understanding how aquatic organisms respond to complex chemical mixtures remains one of the foremost challenges in modern ecotoxicology. Although oil spills are typically high-profile disasters that release hundreds or thousands of chemicals into the environment, there is growing evidence for a common adverse outcome pathway (AOP) for the vulnerable embryos and larvae of fish species that spawn in oiled habitats. Molecular initiating events involve the disruption of excitation-contraction coupling in individual cardiomyocytes, which then dysregulate the form and function of the embryonic heart

Fully automated trace level determination of parent and alkylated PAHs in environmental waters by online SPE-LC-APPI-MS/MS.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous compounds that enter the environment from natural and anthropogenic sources, often used as markers to determine the extent, fate, and potential effects on natural resources after a crude oil accidental release. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after liquid-liquid extraction (LLE+GC-MS) has been extensively used to isolate and quantify both parent and alkylated PAHs. However, it requires labor-intensive extraction and cleanup steps and generates large amounts of toxic solvent waste. Therefore, there is a clear need for greener,

Cyclic AMP-induced slow inward current in depolarized neurons of Aplysia californica.

Cyclic nucleotides have been implicated in many long-lasting transmitter-induced effects on membrane conductance. One previously observed effect of cAMP on molluscan neurons is to induce a slow inward current, which has been further evaluated here in depolarized anterior and medial cells of the pleural ganglion of Aplysia californica in order to understand better its underlying ionic mechanisms and its sensitivity to a variety of pharmacological agents. This current, which appears to be the only cAMP-induced current seen in the anterior cells, was shown to invert at about +25 mV, that is, appr

Analysis of decreased conductance serotonergic response in Aplysia ink motor neurons.

Micropressure ejection of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) produced excitatory responses in the L14 ink motor neurons of Aplysia that depended on the site of application. Ejection of 5-HT onto the cell body produced a slow response that showed variability in voltage sensitivity between preparations. In contrast, ejection of 5-HT onto the neuropil underneath the cell body produced a response whose amplitude was consistently a linear function of the holding potential, reversing near the predicted potassium equilibrium potential. Subsequent analyses focused on this second response. The neuro

Are known cyanotoxins involved in the toxicity of picoplanktonic and filamentous North Atlantic marine cyanobacteria?

Eight marine cyanobacteria strains of the genera Cyanobium, Leptolyngbya, Oscillatoria, Phormidium, and Synechococcus were isolated from rocky beaches along the Atlantic Portuguese central coast and tested for ecotoxicity. Strains were identified by morphological characteristics and by the amplification and sequentiation of the 16S rDNA. Bioactivity of dichloromethane, methanol and aqueous extracts was assessed by the Artemia salina bioassay. Peptide toxin production was screened by matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry. Molecular analysis of the genes in

Effects of hydrographic barriers on population genetic structure of the sea star Coscinasterias muricata (Echinodermata, Asteroidea) in the New Zealand fiords.

New Zealand's 14 deep-water fiords possess persistent salinity stratification and mean estuarine circulation that may serve to isolate populations of marine organisms that have a dispersal larval phase. In order to investigate this idea, we analysed the population structure of the sea star Coscinasterias muricata using a mitochondrial DNA marker. Genetic differentiation among populations of C. muricata was analysed using 366 base pairs of mtDNA D-loop. We compared populations from the fiords with several others sampled from around New Zealand. At a macro-geographical scale (> 1000 km), restric

Molecular characterization and functional analysis of components of the TOR pathway of the salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1838).

The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepods, Caligida) is a marine ectoparasite infecting salmonid fishes in the northern hemisphere. At present, salmon lice infections are the most severe disease problem in the salmon farming industry causing significant economic losses. Due to development of resistance towards available chemotherapeutants, it is clear that new chemotherapeutants or non-chemical control methods are essential to manage the parasite in the future. The TOR signaling pathway is present in all metazoans and is a major regulator of cellular activity according to nutrient ava

Detection of abundant sulphate-reducing bacteria in marine oxic sediment layers by a combined cultivation and molecular approach.

The depth distribution and diversity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was analysed in the upper intertidal zone of a sandy marine sediment of the Dutch island Schiermonnikoog. The upper centimetre of the sediment included the oxic-anoxic interface and was cut into five slices. With each slice, most probable number (MPN) dilution series were set up in microtitre plates using five different substrates. In the deeper sediment layers, up to 1 x 10(8) cm(-3) lactate-utilizing SRB were counted, corresponding to 23% of the total bacterial count. From the highest positive dilutions of the MPN serie

Anti-Inflammatory, Antiallergic, and COVID-19 Main Protease (Mpro) Inhibitory Activities of Butenolides from a Marine-Derived Fungus Aspergillus terreus.

In December 2020, the U.K. authorities reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) that a new COVID-19 variant, considered to be a variant under investigation from December 2020 (VUI-202012/01), was identified through viral genomic sequencing. Although several other mutants were previously reported, VUI-202012/01 proved to be about 70% more transmissible. Hence, the usefulness and effectiveness of the newly U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved COVID-19 vaccines against these new variants are doubtfully questioned. As a result of these unexpected mutants from COVID-19 and due to
