Factors, practices and health needs of men who have sex with men, transgender and female sex workers engaged in sexualized drug use in Pakistan.

The objective of the study is to explore factors, practices, and health needs of men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender (TG), and female sex workers (FSW) engaged in sexualized drug use in Pakistan. A qualitative exploratory study was conducted from August 2024 to December 2024. Community-based organization (CBO) staff (stakeholders) for MSM, TG, and FSW, as well as self-identified MSM, TG, and FSW who have engaged in SDU previously or currently, were recruited. Four focus group discussions (FGD), one each with MSM, TG, FSW engaged in SDU, and HIV Treatment Center staff, were conducted.

Preparing for next-generation PrEP: awareness and willingness to use long-acting injectable cabotegravir among men who have sex with men and trans women across Asia.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) use could be accelerated by offering alternatives that overcome key barriers associated with oral PrEP. This study aimed to understand willingness and preferences for long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) among gay men and other men who have sex with men (MSM), and transgender women (TGW) in Asia. METHODS: An online cross-sectional survey was conducted from May to November 2022 among HIV-negative or unknown status MSM and TGW aged ≥18 years across 15 and 11 Asian countries/territories, respectively. Survey items included awareness and use of

Protocol of a drug-drug interaction study between bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide and feminizing hormones in trans women living with HIV.

AIMS: Trans/transfeminine women are disproportionally affected by HIV. Concerns regarding negative drug-drug interactions (DDIs) between ART drugs and gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT), specifically feminizing hormone therapy (FHT), may contribute to the lower ART uptake by trans women with HIV compared with their cis counterparts. The aim of this study is to investigate the bidirectional pharmacokinetic effects of components of FHT regimens (oral oestradiol and androgen-suppressing medications) with the ART regimen (bictegravir/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide [B/F/TAF)]. METHODS: W

Medical and aesthetic procedural dermatology recommendations for transgender patients undergoing transition.

Transgender individuals may transition to their identified gender through social, hormonal, and procedural methods by using a multidisciplinary team of health care providers, including dermatologists. In this review, we discuss the medical and aesthetic dermatologic needs related to the transitioning of transgender patients and provide therapeutic and procedural recommendations. In addition to routine cutaneous conditions, dermatologists may need to treat hormonal therapy-related complications. Acumen for genital dermatology and familiarity with gender reassignment surgery is important for the

Assessing Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV Risk Among Transgender Women in Lima, Peru: Beyond Behavior.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore risk factors for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among transgender women (TW) in Lima, Peru. Methods: HIV-negative or serostatus unknown TW reporting recent condomless receptive anal intercourse underwent testing for STIs and HIV and completed a sociobehavioral survey. Results: Among 120 TW, 29.6% had rectal Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) or Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and 12.6% had HIV. Age and migrant status were associated with rectal GC/CT, and rectal GC/CT predicted HIV infection. Conclusions: Further study is needed to understan

Associations between the Transsexual Voice Questionnaire (TVQMtF ) and self-report of voice femininity and acoustic voice measures.

BACKGROUND: The Transsexual Voice Questionnaire (TVQMtF ) was designed to capture the voice-related perceptions of individuals whose gender identity as female is the opposite of their birth-assigned gender (MtF women). Evaluation of the psychometric properties of the TVQMtF is ongoing. AIMS: To investigate associations between TVQMtF scores and (1) self-perceptions of voice femininity and (2) acoustic parameters of voice pitch and voice quality in order to evaluate further the validity of the TVQMtF . A strong correlation between TVQMtF scores and self-ratings of voice femininity was predicte

Assessing Collectivism in Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, and African American Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Psychometric Evaluation.

The study of collectivism has implications for HIV prevention research, especially in studies that use a social networking or community mobilization approach. However, research on collectivism in race/ethnicity and sexual minority groups is limited. We psychometrically evaluated a brief version of the Individualism-Collectivism Interpersonal Assessment Inventory (ICIAI) in a chain-referral sample of 400 Latino, 393 Asian/Pacific Islander, and 403 African American men who have sex with men (MSM). Data were collected via a one-time survey on demographics, the ICIAI, acculturation, and ethnicity

Non-medical use of prescription drugs and HIV risk behaviour in transgender women in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.

Male-to-female transgender women (TGW) experience high rates of substance use and HIV. A recent substance use trend is the use of prescription medication without a doctor's consent. No research to date has examined the associations between this non-medical use of prescription drugs and HIV risk behaviour in TGW. In the present study, TGW recruited from community venues (N = 104) in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States completed surveys assessing demographic information, non-medical use of prescription drugs, other substance use, injection practices and sexual risk behaviour. Overcoming psychosocial and developmental barriers to blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) in an adolescent/young adult (AYA) transgender patient with chronic myelogenous leukemia.

Adolescents/young adults (AYAs) afflicted with cancer face unique barriers to potentially standard curative therapies, such as blood and marrow transplantation (BMT). Transgender AYAs face additional barriers and there is a dearth of published literature regarding their oncology-related experience. We present the case of an AYA male-to-female (MTF) transgender patient on cross-sex hormone therapy, with a history of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) and significant psychosocial barriers, which initially served as a barrier to BMT at two different centers; we modified our standard consent and e

Voice in female-to-male transsexual persons after long-term androgen therapy.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The aim of the present study was to 1) document voice in a large sample of female-to-male transsexual persons (FMT), 2) compare their vocal characteristics with those of heterosexual biological males, and 3) determine hormonal factors with impact on their fundamental frequency. STUDY DESIGN: This was a controlled cross-sectional study. It is the largest study to date on voice and voice change in FMT, and the first to include a control group and FMT who were under long-term androgen administration. METHODS: Thirty-eight FMT, ranging in age between 22 and 54 years, and 3

Association between serosorting and bacterial sexually transmitted infection among HIV-negative men who have sex with men at an urban lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health center.

BACKGROUND: Serosorting, selecting sex partners of the same HIV status, may be associated with increased risk of sexually transmitted infection (STI). We examined the association between unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with a seroconcordant partner and STIs among HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) at an urban lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender STI clinic. METHODS: Subjects reported how they assessed their most recent sex partner's HIV status. Those who reported getting tested together or asking were classified as known concordant; those who determined their partner's serosta

Daily and on-demand HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis with emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil (ANRS PREVENIR): a prospective observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There are few data available regarding the use of on-demand pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention. We aimed to assess PrEP effectiveness, adherence, and safety in adults using daily or on-demand PrEP. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational cohort study (ANRS PREVENIR) at 26 sites in the Paris region, France. We enrolled HIV-negative adults (aged ≥18 years) at high risk of HIV infection who were starting or continuing PrEP. PrEP was prescribed as a fixed-dose combination of tenofovir disoproxil and emtricitabine (245 mg and 200 mg, respectively, per pill). P

Testing the robustness of daily associations of affect with alcohol and cannabis use.

Etiological models of alcohol and cannabis use disorders hypothesize that people are more likely to use substances when experiencing heightened negative affect, yet recent Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) studies found no evidence for this daily association. To provide a robust understanding of whether and when affect regulation is supported in EMA, we tested within-person associations between affect and substance use across hundreds of statistical models in a diverse sample of young adults (n = 496) recruited from both college and community sources, aged 18-22 years (55.8% assigned femal

Trajectories of social transition among trans children and adolescents in Victoria, Australia: a longitudinal descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: The process of social transition, defined as outward changes in gender expression to align with and affirm one's gender identity, has been richly described in qualitative studies, but quantitative research often lacks the detail required to capture its full complexity. This study aimed to quantitatively examine how this process varies in transgender and gender diverse (trans) young people over time. METHODS: Prospective longitudinal data (across 2-3 annual waves from 2017 to 2024) were obtained from 234 trans young people (aged 8-17 years) attending a specialist paediatric gender

Progress towards the 95-95-95 targets to end HIV by 2030 in Lebanon, 2023.

BACKGROUND: Lebanon faces an HIV epidemic concentrated in key populations. The national AIDS programme [NAP] hosted by WHO since 1989 achieved substantial progress towards the 95-95-95 UNAIDS targets. In 2023, we reviewed the programme to guide its planned transition back into the structure of the Ministry of Health [MOH]. METHODS: In 2023, we reviewed programme documents, epidemiological information and interviewed relevant stakeholders. We compiled national data along with WHO and UNAIDS estimates to describe the evolution of programme and epidemiological indicators, along with the result c

Integrating HIV and primary healthcare for key populations: community-led models from Vietnam, Nigeria and Eswatini.

INTRODUCTION: Key populations (KP), including men who have sex with men, people who inject drugs, sex workers, transgender people and people in closed settings, are disproportionately affected by HIV and face structural and legal barriers to care. While community-led responses are central to reaching KP, services are often disease-specific and disconnected from national primary healthcare (PHC) systems. PHC, defined by WHO as a whole-of-society approach to delivering integrated and person-centred services, is rarely designed to meet the broader health needs of KP, who also experience high burd
