Responses of female New World screwworm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax, to coloured targets in the laboratory.

The responses of unmated female New World screwworm flies, Cochliomyia hominivorax Coquerel, to visual targets were studied in a wind-tunnel. Both activity and frequency of contacts with targets increased greatly when the screwworm attractant mixture swormlure-4 was added to the airstream. Target-orientated responses depended on target colour, with red and black targets being preferred over blue, white and yellow ones; this preference was much greater in the presence of odour than in its absence. No preference was detected for different shapes and orientations of red targets, all of equivalent

Antioxidant and Hypoglycemic Activity of Sequentially Extracted Fractions from Pingguoli Pear Fermentation Broth and Identification of Bioactive Compounds.

Pear fruits have been reported to contain abundant bioactive compounds and exhibit antidiabetic activity. In this study, Pingguoli pear (Pyrus pyrifolia cv.'Pingguoli') fermentation broth was sequentially extracted by five solvents with increasing polarity (petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and water) to evaluate its antioxidant and hypothermic activities, and then the main compounds of the fraction with the highest activity were assessed, which might be responsible for such activities. The results showed that the ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) exhibited the highest antioxid

Production of isopropyl and butyl esters by Clostridium mono-culture and co-culture.

Production of esters from the acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation by Clostridium often focuses on butyl butyrate, leaving acetone as an undesired product. Addition of butyrate is also often needed because ABE fermentation does not produce enough butyrate. Here we addressed the problems using Clostridium beijerinckii BGS1 that preferred to produce isopropanol instead of acetone, and co-culturing it with Clostridium tyrobutyricum ATCC 25,755 that produced butyrate. Unlike acetone, isopropanol could be converted into ester using lipase and acids. C. tyrobutyricum ATCC 25,755 produced acids

Spectrophotometric determination of some anti-tussive and anti-spasmodic drugs through ion-pair complex formation with thiocyanate and cobalt(II) or molybdenum(V).

Two rapid, simple and sensitive extractive specrophotometric methods has been developed for the determination of anti-tussive drugs, e.g., dextromethorphan hydrobromide (DEX) and pipazethate hydrochloride (PiCl) and anti-spasmodic drugs, e.g., drotaverine hydrochloride (DvCl) and trimebutine maleate (TM) in bulk and in their pharmaceutical formulations. The proposed methods depend upon the reaction of cobalt(II)-thiocyanate (method A) and molybdenum(V)-thiocyanate ions (method B) with the cited drugs to form stable ion-pair complexes which extractable with an n-butnol-dichloromethane solvent m

Cyclodextrin-mediated enantioseparation in microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography.

Chiral separation by means of cyclodextrins has a long-standing tradition in capillary electrophoresis techniques. Here we present a chiral method utilizing the recently introduced microemulsion electrokinetic chromatography. The microemulsion consisting of 1.0% SDS, 4.0% 1-butanol, 3.0% 2-propanol, 0.5% ethylacetate, and 91.5% 20 mM phosphate buffer pH 2.5 serves as a pseudostationary phase which is complemented by sulfated cyclodextrin as a second phase. The analytes partition between the aqueous running buffer and both pseudostationary phases, the oil droplets and the cyclodextrins. Enantio

Volatile compounds detected in blood of drunk drivers by headspace/capillary gas chromatography/ion trap mass spectrometry.

As shown by others, ethanol and methanol appear in the breath of normals, and endogenous methanol becomes detectable also in the blood after intake of ethanol. In this study I have investigated whether low-molecular-weight volatile organics, other than methanol, arise in the blood of drunk drivers who had imbibed alcoholic beverages. To this end a method for searching for such compounds in the blood is described. It was based on headspace extraction, gas chromatographic separation on a DB-WAX capillary, and ion trap detection in the mass range 29-99 u. Detection limits, as defined by the analy

Highly efficient direct aerobic oxidative esterification of cinnamyl alcohol with alkyl alcohols catalysed by gold nanoparticles incarcerated in a nanoporous polymer matrix: a tool for investigating the role of the polymer host.

The selective aerobic oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol to cinnamaldehyde, as well as direct oxidative esterification of this alcohol with primary and secondary aliphatic alcohols, were achieved with high chemoselectivity by using gold nanoparticles supported in a nanoporous semicrystalline multi-block copolymer matrix, which consisted of syndiotactic polystyrene-co-cis-1,4-polybutadiene. The cascade reaction that leads to the alkyl cinnamates occurs through two oxidation steps: the selective oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol to cinnamaldehyde, followed by oxidation of the hemiacetal that results from

Antifungal properties of a new terpernoid saponin and other compounds from the stem bark of Polyscias fulva Hiern (Araliaceae).

BACKGROUND: In our previous studies, it was evident that the dichloromethane-methanol (1:1 v/v) stem barks extract of Polyscias fulva and fractions (ethyl acetate, n-butanol and residue) demonstrated interesting antidermatophytic activities. So, as a continuity of that, this work aimed at identifying active principles with antifungal properties from P. fulva that could be used as markers for possible standardization of this plant as phytomedicine. METHODS: The ethyl acetate, n-butanol and residual fractions of the dichloromethane-methanol (1:1 v/v) stem bark extract of Polyscias fulva were fu

Fiber content of diet affects exhaled breath volatiles in fasting and postprandial state in a pilot crossover study.

Our pilot study examined the potential of exhaled breath analysis in studying the metabolic effects of dietary fiber (DF). We hypothesized that a high-fiber diet (HFD) containing whole grain rye changes volatile organic compound (VOC) levels in exhaled breath and that consuming a single meal affects these levels. Seven healthy men followed a week-long low-fiber diet (17 g/d) and HFD (44 g/d) in a randomized crossover design. A test meal containing 50 g of the available carbohydrates from wheat bread was served as breakfast after each week. Alveolar exhaled breath samples were analyzed at fasti

Nano-scale smooth surface of the compact-TiO2 layer via spray pyrolysis for controlling the grain size of the perovskite layer in perovskite solar cells.

The mechanism of perovskite film growth is critical for the final morphology and, thus, the performance of the perovskite solar cell. The nano-roughness of compact TiO2 (c-TiO2) fabricated via the spray pyrolysis method had a significant effect on the perovskite grain size and perovskite solar cell performance in this work. While spray pyrolysis is a low-cost and straightforward deposition technique suitable for large-scale application, it is influenced by a number of parameters, including (i) alcoholic solvent precursor, (ii) spray temperature, and (iii) annealing temperature. Among alcoholic

Biphasic effects of alcohols on the phase transition of poly(L-lysine) between alpha-helix and beta-sheet conformations.

Poly(L-lysine) exists as a random-coil at neutral pH, an alpha-helix at alkaline pH, and a beta-sheet when the alpha-helix poly(L-lysine) is heated. The present Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) study showed that short-chain alcohols (methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol) partially transformed alpha-helix poly(L-lysine) to beta-sheet when their concentrations were low. At higher concentrations, however, these alcohols reversed the reaction, and the alcohol-induced beta-sheet was transformed back to alpha-helix structure. The reversal occurred at 1.40 M methanol, 0.96 M ethanol, and 0.55 M 2-propa

Unraveling the tripartite interaction of volatile compounds of Streptomyces rochei with grain mold pathogens infecting sorghum.

Sorghum is a major grain crop used in traditional meals and health drinks, and as an efficient fuel. However, its productivity, value, germination, and usability are affected by grain mold, which is a severe problem in sorghum production systems, which reduces the yield of harvested grains for consumer use. The organic approach to the management of the disease is essential and will increase consumer demand. Bioactive molecules like mVOC (volatile organic compound) identification are used to unravel the molecules responsible for antifungal activity. The Streptomyces rochei strain (ASH) has been
