Head Acceleration Event Probabilities During Standardised Contact Drills in Academy Men's Rugby League.

This study investigated head acceleration event (HAE) probabilities between common contact-drills in rugby league. Fifteen professional male academy players participated in three training sessions, completing standardised contact-drills while wearing custom-fitted iMGs, all sessions were filmed. HAE data (peak linear acceleration and peak angular acceleration) were captured, synchronised, and processed alongside video data. Binomial logistic regression and ordinal mixed-effect regression models were used to calculate overall and exceedance probabilities. Data included 1402 (93 ± 50 per player)

Longitudinal infection trajectories and biological aging acceleration in adults: a prospective cohort study.

Infections remain a major cause of mortality and may threaten healthy aging. Previous studies have focused on isolated severe infections rather than longitudinal infection burden. We aimed to examine associations of infection trajectories with biological age acceleration (BAA) and assessed infection severity and genetic susceptibility. We included adults aged 20-74 years from the Shanghai Suburban Adult Cohort and Biobank, China, enrolled between 2016 and 2019 with valid biological age (BA) measurements at baseline and follow-up. Infection-related episodes were identified from linked local hea

Epigenetic age acceleration measures and chemotoxicity in older adults with early breast cancer.

Among older adults with early breast cancer, the risk of chemotoxicity can vary widely despite similar chronological age. Here, we evaluated whether epigenetic indicators of biological age can stratify the risk of chemotoxicity in this population. In a prospective study of 394 women age > 65 with stage I-III breast cancer treated with neo/adjuvant chemotherapy, we analyzed peripheral blood DNA methylation patterns to estimate epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) before chemotherapy. We tested five epigenetic clocks. The primary endpoint was grade 2+ chemotoxicity (yes/no, yes defined as any grade

Experimental Demonstration of Directional and Collimated Electron Acceleration with Hollow Laguerre-Gaussian Lasers.

We report the first experimental demonstration of directional and collimated electron acceleration in the direct laser acceleration regime using a relativistic hollow Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) laser. Electrons are confined within the hollow field distribution along the reflected laser direction, producing a collimated beam and overcoming the dispersed characteristic of Gaussian-laser-driven electrons. In particular, the left-circularly polarized LG laser generates a unique longitudinal resonant electric field on the axis, which, combined with transverse confinement, forms a stable acceleration st

Effect of Equivalence Ratio on Combustion Characteristics under Propane-Air Flame Acceleration Conditions.

An improved constant-volume combustion bomb (CVCB) with a double-layer perforated plate was employed to investigate the combustion characteristics of propane-air premixed flames at different equivalence ratios (Φ = 0.8-1.25). Combined three-dimensional simulations and high-speed Schlieren imaging were used to analyze the coupled evolution of flame, flow, and pressure fields in confined space. The simulations revealed that before reaching the plate, expansion-induced flow and geometric contraction accelerated the unburned gas through the orifices, while pressure-driven jets near the orifices st

Association between epigenetic age acceleration and psychiatric disorders: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

Aging is a complex process influenced by genetic, environmental, and psychiatric factors. Recent evidence suggests that epigenetic age acceleration (EAA), a biomarker of biological aging, may be linked to psychiatric disorders, yet the causal direction remains unclear. This study employed a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to explore the causal relationships between EAA (IEAA, HannumAA, GrimAA, PhenoAA) and ten psychiatric disorders. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics from large European ancestry cohorts were used, and sensitivity analyses wer

Associations of Epigenetic Age Acceleration with Motor Impairment: Evidence from the PPMI Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: Motor decline is a hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD) and biological aging. While epigenetic clocks measure systemic biological aging, their specific relationship with neuromotor function in the context of aging and neurodegeneration remains under-characterized. This study utilized data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) to examine the relationships between multiple DNA methylation-based epigenetic aging measures and motor impairment across distinct domains. METHODS: We utilized longitudinal phenotype and whole-blood DNA methylation data from the PPMI coho

Epigenetic age acceleration in Turner and Klinefelter syndrome: Correlations with clinical aging markers.

BACKGROUND: The sex chromosome aneuploidies Turner syndrome (45,X; TS) and Klinefelter syndrome (47,XXY; KS) are associated with aging-related comorbidities, reduced life expectancy and genome-wide DNA methylation changes. This indicates that biological aging, reflecting physiological function rather than chronological age, is increased in both syndromes. To investigate whether DNA methylation patterns linked to physiological decline could contribute to the comorbidity patterns and reduced lifespan in TS and KS, we applied so-called epigenetic clocks to DNA methylation data from cohorts of TS

Structural and functional asymmetry of the lower limb related to gravitational acceleration tolerance.

This study investigates the physiological effects of intensive physical training on femoral cartilage morphology and limb asymmetry in strength in air force cadets. Thirty male cadets were evaluated using ultrasonography to measure femoral cartilage thickness, isokinetic testing to assess knee flexor and extensor strength, and the functional movement screen (FMS) to examine movement patterns. Participants were divided into pass and fail groups based on the G test, a measure of gravitational acceleration tolerance. Cadets in the fail group exhibited significantly thinner cartilage in the medial

Agreement and Sensitivity of the Acceleration-Velocity Profile Derived via Local Positioning System.

Sprint performance is commonly assessed via discrete sprint tests and analyzed through kinematic estimates modeled using a mono-exponential equation, including estimated maximal sprinting speed (MSS), relative acceleration (TAU), maximum acceleration (MAC), and relative propulsive maximal power (PMAX). The acceleration-velocity profile (AVP) provides a simple summary of short sprint performance using two parameters: MSS and MAC, which are useful for simplifying descriptions of sprint performance, comparison between athletes and groups of athletes, and estimating changes in performance over tim

Particle acceleration in colliding flows: Binary star winds and other double-shock structures.

A shock wave propagating perpendicularly to an ambient magnetic field accelerates particles considerably faster than in the parallel propagation regime. However, the perpendicular acceleration stops after the shock overruns a circular particle orbit. At the same time, it may continue in flows resulting from supersonically colliding plasmas bound by a pair of perpendicular shocks. Although the double-shock acceleration mechanism, which we consider in detail, is not advantageous for thermal particles, preenergized particles may avoid the premature end of acceleration. We argue that if their gyro

Significant Acceleration of Regional Brain Aging and Atrophy After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Brain regions' rates of age-related volumetric change after traumatic brain injury (TBI) are unknown. Here, we quantify these rates cross-sectionally in 113 persons with recent mild TBI (mTBI), whom we compare against 3 418 healthy controls (HCs). Regional gray matter (GM) volumes were extracted from magnetic resonance images. Linear regression yielded regional brain ages and the annualized average rates of regional GM volume loss. These results were compared across groups after accounting for sex and intracranial volume. In HCs, the steepest rates of volume loss were recorded in the nucleus a

Regional Aβ-tau interactions promote onset and acceleration of Alzheimer's disease tau spreading.

Amyloid-beta and tau are key molecules in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease, but it remains unclear how these proteins interact to promote disease. Here, by combining cross-sectional and longitudinal molecular imaging and network connectivity analyses in living humans, we identified two amyloid-beta/tau interactions associated with the onset and propagation of tau spreading. First, we show that the lateral entorhinal cortex, an early site of tau neurofibrillary tangle formation, is subject to remote, connectivity-mediated amyloid-beta/tau interactions linked to initial tau spreading. Evidence for PeV Proton Acceleration from Fermi-LAT Observations of SNR G106.3+2.7.

The existence of a "knee" at energy ∼1  PeV in the cosmic-ray spectrum suggests the presence of Galactic PeV proton accelerators called "PeVatrons." Supernova remnant (SNR) G106.3+2.7 is a prime candidate for one of these. The recent detection of very high energy (0.1-100 TeV) gamma rays from G106.3+2.7 may be explained either by the decay of neutral pions or inverse Compton scattering by relativistic electrons. We report an analysis of 12 years of Fermi-LAT gamma-ray data that shows that the GeV-TeV gamma-ray spectrum is much harder and requires a different total electron energy than the radi

Characterizing Exposure to Head Acceleration Events in Youth Football Using an Instrumented Mouthpiece.

Understanding characteristics of head acceleration events (HAEs) in youth football is vital in developing strategies to improve athlete safety. This study aimed to characterize HAEs in youth football using an instrumented mouthpiece. Youth football athletes (ages 11-13) participating on two teams were enrolled in this study for one season. Each athlete was instrumented with a mouthpiece-based sensor throughout the season. HAEs were verified on film to ensure that mouthpiece-based sensors triggered during contact. The number of HAEs, peak resultant linear and rotational accelerations, and peak
