To better understand temperature's role in the interaction between local evolutionary adaptation and physiological plasticity, we investigated acclimation effects on metabolic performance and thermal tolerance among natural Fundulus heteroclitus (small estuarine fish) populations from different thermal environments. Fundulus heteroclitus populations experience large daily and seasonal temperature variations, as well as local mean temperature differences across their large geographical cline. In this study, we use three populations: one locally heated (32°C) by thermal effluence (TE) from the O

Exposure to high-altitude reduces oxygen availability, leading to hypoxemia. To combat this physiological stressor, the body initiates a cascade of short- and long-term compensatory responses (i.e., high-altitude acclimatization). Some notable adaptations include rapid increases in ventilation, heightened sympathetic neural activity, and reductions in plasma volume during early acclimatization, followed by increases in hemoglobin mass and concentration. Despite these physiological responses, many of the ~ 40 million people who travel to high altitude regions (i.e., > 2500 m) each year, suffer

Global REACH 2018: characterizing acid-base balance over 21 days at 4,300 m in lowlanders. High Alt Med Biol. 23:185-191, 2022. Introduction: High altitude exposure results in hyperventilatory-induced respiratory alkalosis, followed by metabolic compensation to return arterial blood pH (pHa) toward sea level values. However, previous work has limited sample sizes, short-term exposure, and pharmacological confounders (e.g., a

BACKGROUND: Compared to measurements at sea level, measurement of oxygen saturation by pulse oximetry (SpO2) at altitude differs fundamentally because of the cyclical course of SpO2, caused by periodic breathing. Therefore, the determination of a representative SpO2 value is difficult. In the literature, recommendations for a standardized measurement procedure are missing; different studies measure SpO2 in different ways.
KEY QUESTION: Does the visually determined SpO2 value correlate with the actual average of the measurement interval?
METHODS: Four participants of an expedition (6013 m; Pa

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As compliance of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) for treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is often suboptimal, a less cumbersome treatment is desirable. We explored the clinical usefulness of nasal positive end expiratory pressure (nPEEP) valves.
METHODS: Symptomatic OSA patients (apnoea hypopnea index (AHI) >5/h by polysomnography (PSG) or >10/h by type III devices), who declined CPAP, were recruited. A nPEEP valve was attached to each nostril before bed. After successful acclimatization for 1 week, treatment was continued for 4 weeks. The nPEEP va

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) during sleep in normal subjects at high altitude shows a decrease in parasympathetic tone associated with an increase in the sympathetic one, which tends to be reversed with acclimatization. However, periodic breathing (PB) during sleep may influence this effect detected by HRV spectral analysis.
PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to investigate HRV during sleep periodic breathing (PB) at high altitude in normal subjects at two different times of acclimatization, i.e., two different levels of hypoxemia.
METHODS: Recordings of six healthy climbers (aged

After acclimatization to high altitude, maximal exercise cardiac output (QT) is reduced. Possible contributing factors include 1) blood volume depletion, 2) increased blood viscosity, 3) myocardial hypoxia, 4) altered autonomic nervous system (ANS) function affecting maximal heart rate (HR), and 5) reduced flow demand from reduced muscle work capability. We tested the role of the ANS reduction of HR in this phenomenon in five normal subjects by separately blocking the sympathetic and parasympathetic arms of the ANS during maximal exercise after 2-wk acclimatization at 3,800 m to alter maximal

Ventilatory responses to acute and long-term hypoxia are classically triggered by carotid chemoreceptors. The chemosensory inputs are carried within the carotid sinus nerve to the nucleus tractus solitarius and the brainstem respiratory centres. To investigate whether hypoxia acts directly on brainstem neurons or secondarily via carotid body inputs, we tested the ventilatory responses to acute and long-term hypoxia in rats with bilaterally transected carotid sinus nerves and in sham-operated rats. Because brainstem catecholaminergic neurons are part of the chemoreflex pathway, the ventilatory

In the Djungarian hamster seasonal acclimatization is primarily controlled by photoperiod, but exposure to low ambient temperature amplifies the intensity and duration of short day-induced winter adaptations. The aim of this study was to test, whether the pineal gland is involved in integrating both environmental cues. Exposure of hamsters to cold (0 degrees C) reduces the sensitivity of the pineal gland to light at night and prevents inactivation of N-acetyltransferase (NAT). The parallel time course of NAT activity and plasma norepinephrine content suggests that circulating catecholamines ma

In two Canadian runs with a total of approximately 2900 participants 26 people collapsed with heat injury and were taken to hospital. All were relatively young (13 to 38 years old). A retrospective survey showed that all were novices to 10-km races and that many had collapsed even though they had consumed fluids before and during the run. A review of etiologic factors suggested that the extremes in the Canadian climate, which preclude heat acclimatization in the spring and early summer, may be an important influence on the incidence of heat injury.

Climate change is predicted to change not only the temperature of many freshwater systems but also flow dynamics. Understanding how fishes will fare in the future requires knowing how they will respond to both extended variations of temperature and flow. Arctic charr have had their thermal tolerance measured, but never with respect to flow. Additionally, this circumpolar species has multiple populations exhibiting dramatic phenotypic plasticity which may mean that regional differences in thermal tolerance are unaccounted for. In Iceland, Arctic charr populations have experienced highly variabl

Sugarcane is used to produce sugar, ethanol, and other by-products, so it is considered one of the most important crops worldwide. Using temporary immersion systems for sugarcane micropropagation represents an alternative to reduce the labor force, increase plant development, and improve plant quality. Temporary immersion systems are semi-automated bioreactors designed for the large-scale propagation of tissues, embryos, and organs. These are temporarily exposed in a liquid culture medium under a specific time and immersion frequency. Using this protocol and a temporary immersion bioreactor, i

Species distributed across wide elevational gradients are likely to experience local thermal adaptation and exhibit high thermal plasticity, as these gradients are characterised by steep environmental changes over short geographic distances (i.e., strong selection differentials). The prevalence of adaptive intraspecific variation in thermal tolerance with elevation remains unclear, however, particularly in freshwater taxa. We explored variation in upper and lower thermal limits and acclimation capacity among Iberian populations of adults of the widespread water beetle Agabus bipustulatus (Dyti

The extensive biodiversification of butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) is partly attributed to their unique mouthparts (proboscis [Pr]) that can span in length from less than 1 mm to over 280 mm in Darwin's sphinx moths. Lepidoptera, similar to other insects, are believed to inhale and exhale respiratory gases only through valve-like spiracles on their thorax and abdomen, making gas exchange through the narrow tracheae (Tr) challenging for the elongated Pr. How Lepidoptera overcome distance effects for gas transport to the Pr is an open question that is important to understanding how the Pr e

A coastal region is a section of land that borders a significant body of water, often the sea or ocean. Despite their productivity, they are sensitive to even little alterations in the outside environment. This study aims to develop a spatial coastal vulnerability index (CVI) map for the Tamil Nadu coast of India, which has diverse coastal and marine environments that are ecologically fragile zones. Climate change is expected to increase the intensity and frequency of severe coastal hazards, such as rising sea levels, cyclones, storm surges, tsunamis, erosion, and accretion, severely impacting

AbstractEastern oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are sessile, relying on a larval phase to disperse in estuaries. Oyster larval swimming behavior can alter dispersal trajectories and patterns of population connectivity. Experiments were conducted to test how both (1) acclimation time to new environmental conditions and (2) larval swimming behavior change with salinity and larval age. Acclimation time to changes in salinity was longest in lower salinity (6 ppt) and decreased with age. To test changes in behavior with salinity, larvae were placed into four salinities (6, 10, 16, and 22 ppt) where

The lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae), is a major global pest of cereal grains. Infestations are difficult to control as larvae feed inside grain kernels, and many populations are resistant to both contact insecticides and fumigants. We sequenced the genome of R. dominica to identify genes responsible for important biological functions and develop more targeted and efficacious management strategies. The genome was assembled from long read sequencing and long-range scaffolding technologies. The genome assembly is 479.1 Mb, close to the predicted genome siz

In the present study, a comprehensive proteomic analysis of Brucella melitensis (B. melitensis) strain ATCC23457 was carried out to investigate proteome alterations in response to in vitro-induced nutrient stress. Our analysis resulted in the identification of 2440 proteins, including 365 hypothetical proteins and 850 potentially secretory proteins representing ~77.8% of the B. melitensis proteome. Utilizing a proteogenomics approach, we provide translational evidence for eight novel putative protein-coding genes and confirmed the coding potential of 31 putatively annotated pseudogenes, thus r

Abandoning of a stable body temperature (Tb), a phenomenon known as heterothermy, is an adaptation to cope mainly with a lack of food and water, especially in species inhabiting daily or seasonally variable environments. There is increasing evidence that African mammals avoid adverse conditions by heterothermy and eventually by entering torpor. Members of subterranean rodent family, the African mole-rats (Bathyergidae), are suitable candidates to study both phenomena, because of the diversity of their strategies in respect of maintaining stable Tb ranging from homeothermic species to a mammal

Extreme weather events are becoming more intense and frequent as a result of climate change. The modulation of hemato-physiological potential as a compensatory response to extreme warm events combined with different salinities is poorly understood. This study aimed to assess the hemato-physiological and molecular response of European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax exposed to extreme warm temperature (33 °C) after prior acclimatization at 32 psu, 12 psu, 6 psu, and 2 psu water. Fish were acclimated to 32 psu, 12 psu, 6 psu, and 2 psu followed by 10 days extreme warm (33 °C) exposure. Along with
