[Mental health in the workplace - What role do socioeconomic-, gender-, and migration-related inequalities play?].

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for mental health can be found in socio-economic-, gender- and migration-specific inequalities. These factors and the extent of depression, anxiety, and somatization among employees were examined in the present study. METHODS: As part of the Early Intervention in the Workplace Study (friaa), mentally burdened employees at five locations in Germany were surveyed on socio-demographic-, work-, migration-, and health-related content. Regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between these factors and depression (Patient-Health-Questionnaire-9, PHQ-9), anxi

Frustrated, hopeless and hesitant: Understanding doctors' learned attitudes and emotions toward vaccine hesitancy through socialisation theory.

RATIONALE: Healthcare professionals (HCPs) play an important role in addressing vaccine hesitancy (VH), yet current interventions often rely on skills-based training (e.g., Motivational Interviewing) while overlooking HCPs' internal value conflicts. Understanding these conflicts (such as attitudes or emotions of VH, frustration, hopelessness and discomfort with persuasion) may help training HCPs in this area. METHOD: Drawing on Socialisation Theory, this study examines the acculturation mechanisms that shape doctor attitudes toward vaccination. A survey (n = 174) supported ten focus groups wi

Multivitamin Use Among Hispanic Women of Reproductive Age in the United States, 2013-2022.

Background: The U.S. Public Health Service and the Institute of Medicine recommend that all women capable of becoming pregnant consume 400 μg of folic acid daily to help prevent neural tube defects (NTDs). Hispanic women are at higher risk of having babies with NTDs than non-Hispanic White women. This study assessed multivitamin (MV) use, a main source of folic acid, among Hispanic women of reproductive age using a survey of solely U.S. Hispanic adults. Materials and Methods: MV use was assessed as part of Porter Novelli's Estilos survey, fielded annually through the largest online U.S. Hispan

Emigration stress and language proficiency as correlates of depression in a sample of Southeast Asian refugees.

This research evaluated a stress management, coping skills model of adjustment in the analysis of depression in a sample of Laotian refugees living in the southeastern United States. Stressful events and experiences during emigration and a lack of English proficiency were associated with depressive symptoms, while demographic variables and social support were not. English proficiency also significantly reduced the impact of acculturative stressors on depression, suggesting that language skill may act as a stress buffer in the new cultural environment.

Indigenous knowledge and use of medicinal plants for ethnoveterinary within the North West Province, South Africa.

Ethnoveterinary medicine (EVM) has been used by local South African communities for centuries. However, the knowledge of EVM is under threat due to the influence of Western medicine and acculturation. This study aimed to document the knowledge of ethnoveterinary medicinal plants in four villages within the Mahikeng Local Municipality to help preserve this valuable knowledge. The study used a qualitative research approach and targeted practitioners and holders of ethnoveterinary knowledge in four villages. Participants were recruited using key informants and snowball techniques, and in-depth in

Adaptation of an Intervention to Reduce Disparities in School HRQOL for Latino Childhood Cancer Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Survivors of childhood leukemia, especially those from low socioeconomic status households, often experience persistent neurocognitive and academic impairment. This study adapted an existing parent training intervention to improve outcomes for low-acculturated, Spanish-speaking Latino parents of children with leukemia and pilot tested that intervention for feasibility. METHODS: Semistructured interviews were conducted with a focus group of 20 Latino parents of children treated for leukemia. Ten Latino families participated in a pilot study of the adapted parenting intervention, con

Lung volumes of Igloolik Inuit and Volochanka nGanasan.

BACKGROUND: Acculturation to a 'modern' lifestyle has apparently speeded the aging of FVC and FEV1.0 in the Inuit (6). To test this hypothesis further, we compared lung function between Igloolik Inuit and less acculturated nGanasan in Volochanka. METHODS AND MATERIALS: FVC and FEV1.0 were measured by Stead-Wells spirometer (13.5 L lightweight bell) on 210M and 157F Inuit, and by 7.8 L dry gas wedge spirometer on 80M and 66F nGanasan. Subjects were aged 11-60 years. RESULTS: The Inuit and the nGanasan were both some 10 cm shorter than the urban norms, but the ratio of sitting to standing heig

Enhancing the wellbeing of refugees living with advanced life-limiting illness in high-income resettlement countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Refugees experience barriers to health care after resettlement and may have distinct palliative care needs. There is no systematic guidance to support person-centred palliative care services that are responsive to refugees' needs and preferences. AIM: To synthesis evidence regarding factors enhancing the wellbeing of refugees with advanced life-limiting illness, and their families, to inform palliative care in high-income resettlement countries. DESIGN: A systematic review of primary research studies. We applied a strength-based assets framework to the data extraction and synthes

Eating disorder treatment experiences among racially/ethnically minoritized samples.

Although eating disorders (EDs) affect individuals of all races and ethnicities, racially/ethnically minoritized individuals are less likely to receive ED treatment than White individuals. The present study aimed to compare ED treatment experiences in a sample of racially/ethnically minoritized individuals vs. White participants. As a secondary aim, we explored how acculturation and mental health stigma factors were associated with treatment experiences. We recruited 41 White and 27 racially/ethnically minoritized individuals with a history of EDs (with all racially/ethnically minoritized indi

Prescription opioid misuse among U.S. Hispanics.

BACKGROUND: As a risk factor for addiction, heroin use, and overdose, the misuse of prescription opioids represents a critical public health challenge. While public attention has primarily centered on opioid misuse among White individuals, less attention has been devoted to opioid misuse among one of the United States' fastest-growing demographic groups: Hispanic immigrants and their descendants. This study therefore examined prescription opioid misuse among U.S. Hispanic adults, with attention to within-group differences and the role of acculturation-related characteristics. METHODS: Data we

Parent and Child Characteristics Associated with Child Sunburn and Sun Protection Among U.S. Hispanics.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Skin cancer incidence has been increasing in U.S. Hispanics over several decades and the postdiagnosis outcomes are worse for Hispanics than for non-Hispanic whites. Parents are influential in children's health preventive behaviors, but little is known about parental factors associated with children's skin cancer-related behaviors in the U.S. Hispanic population. The present study examined parental and child correlates of skin cancer-related behaviors (sunburns, sunbathing, sun-protective clothing use, and sunscreen use) of children of Hispanic parents. METHODS: This su

Reduced transforming growth factor-beta1 production by mononuclear cells from patients with active chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura.

UNLABELLED: The ability of a child to demonstrate resilience is a complex outcome influenced by multiple interconnected social systems. One system important to child resiliency is the family system, specifically parenting and the parent-child relationship. However, less is known about how macrosocial systems may affect the family system and, in turn, resiliency at the individual level. This study explored the effect of warm/responsive parenting and involvement on the association between adversity exposure and child internalizing and externalizing symptoms. Additionally, we examined the role of

Changes in food neophobia and dietary habits of international students.

BACKGROUND: International study is becoming more prevalent, yet aspects such as food neophobia often militate against visiting students consuming a nutritionally balanced diet. The present study aimed to evaluate the extent to which international post-graduate students experience food neophobia, how this might vary by nationality and other demographic characteristics, and how acculturation might manifest itself in students' dietary behaviour. METHODS: International students (n = 228) attending a Masters course were invited to complete a validated food neophobia and dietary habits questionnair

Effects of immigration on the mentally ill--does it produce psychological distress?

This report explores psychological distress among immigrants seeking help from psychiatric outpatient clinics as compared with control nonpatient immigrants. Our hypothesis is that nonpsychotic mentally ill immigrants will react to acculturation by psychological distress similarly to healthy individuals. Three questionnaires were used in this survey: Demographic Psychosocial Inventory, Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), and Psychiatric Epidemiology Research Interview-Demoralization Scale (PERI-D). They were completed by patient and control groups consisting of recent adult immigrants to Israel fro

Understanding ethnicity, identity formation, and risk behavior among adolescents of Mexican descent.

The population of adolescents of Mexican descent is growing rapidly in the United States. However, the health needs of this group are not being adequately addressed by the health care system. Understanding the factors contributing to risk behavior in adolescents of Mexican descent may help improve service delivery and use. This article presents a sociodemographic profile of this group as well as a description of how one's degree of ethnic identification, acculturation, and other risk factors may contribute to problem behavior. Recommendations are provided to increase culturally appropriate pre
