Jumping spiders (Salticidae) are famous for their visually driven behaviors [1]. Here, however, we present behavioral and neurophysiological evidence that these animals also perceive and respond to airborne acoustic stimuli, even when the distance between the animal and the sound source is relatively large (∼3 m) and with stimulus amplitudes at the position of the spider of ∼65 dB sound pressure level (SPL). Behavioral experiments with the jumping spider Phidippus audax reveal that these animals respond to low-frequency sounds (80 Hz; 65 dB SPL) by freezing-a common anti-predatory behavior cha

INTRODUCTION: Although phonatory glottal posture and airflow pulse shape affect voice quality, studies to date have been limited by visualization of vocal fold (VF) vibration from a superior view. We performed a 3D reconstruction of VF vibratory motion during phonation from a medial view and assessed the glottal volume waveform and resulting acoustics as a function of neuromuscular stimulation.
STUDY DESIGN: In vivo canine hemilarynx phonation.
METHODS: Across 121 unique combinations of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) and recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) stimulation, the hemilarynx was exc

Focused ultrasound with a frequency of 2.5 MHz and amplitude-modulated in the range of audiometric frequencies (125-8000 Hz) was employed to examine 50 normal hearing persons and in complex diagnostics of over 500 patients suffering from sensorineural deafness, otosclerosis, chronic otitis media, and acoustic neurinoma. Typical diagnostic signs of these diseases were revealed. Modulated ultrasound is shown to offer an improved diagnosis of hearing diseases. The results confirm the previous observation that amplitude-modulated ultrasound may excite not only the acoustic receptors but also the a

The Tullio phenomenon consists of vestibular symptoms on exposure to high-intensity acoustic stimuli, reflecting pathological stimulation of semicircular canals or otoliths. We report a patient with posttraumatic Tullio phenomenon to illustrate how precise measurement of eye movements during auditory stimulation, using the magnetic search coil technique, may characterize movements that are not clinically apparent or easily measured by other means. Such measurements in patients with surgically verified lesions may further elucidate the mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon.

Evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs) are assumed to be generated by outer hair cells (OHCs). It is now generally accepted that EOAEs represent a means of functional exploration of the active micromechanical properties of OHCs. Efferent fibers of the medial olivocochlear system (MOCS) are connected along the sides and the bases of OHCs. Some studies have shown that a suppression effect on EOAE amplitude is induced by the MOCS neurons during contralateral stimulation, presumably by modification of OHC motility. The contralateral acoustic stimuli used in experiments on the EOAE suppression effect

We report the design and clinical use of an electrode which can locate the acoustic nerve fibres in the normal eighth nerve and also in eighth nerves deformed by acoustic neuromas. The improvement in facial nerve preservation during acoustic neuroma surgery is partly due to the use of a facial nerve stimulator to anatomically locate the fibres. Our new acoustic nerve detector has the capability of anatomical location of cochlear fibres which may help to improve hearing preservation in selected cases of acoustic neuroma. The device functions by detecting the compound action potential evoked by

Progressive necrosis of the organ of Corti caused by a disturbance of the ionic composition of the Cortilymph resulting from the infiltration of endolymph into the organi of Corti after traumatization of its barrier against the scala media, is greatly intensified by posttraumatic stimulation with noise of physiological intensities. This effect is attributed to oscillation of the cochlear partition, with resultant greater blending of the Cortilymph and the endolymph. Stimulation augments necrosis fourfold towards the base of the cochlea and twofold towards the helicotrema. Posttraumatic stimula

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is the leading cause of mortality in patients with intractable epilepsy. However, the pathogenesis of SUDEP seems to be poorly understood. Our previous findings showed that the incidence of seizure-induced respiratory arrest (S-IRA) was markedly reduced by atomoxetine in a murine SUDEP model. Because the central norepinephrine α-1 receptor (NEα-1R) plays a vital role in regulating respiratory function, we hypothesized that the suppression of S-IRA by atomoxetine was mediated by NE/NEα-1R interactions that can be reversed by NEα-1R antagonism. We exam

HYPOTHESIS: Cochlear trauma due to electrode insertion can be detected in acoustic responses to low frequencies in an animal model with a hearing condition similar to patients using electroacoustic stimulation.
BACKGROUND: Clinical evidence suggests that intracochlear damage during cochlear implantation negatively affects residual hearing. Recently, we demonstrated the usefulness of acoustically evoked potentials to detect cochlear trauma in normal-hearing gerbils. Here, gerbils with noise-induced hearing loss were used to investigate the effects of remote trauma on residual hearing.

Ambient noise is a major constraint on acoustic communication in both animals and humans. One mechanism to overcome this problem is Spatial Release from Masking (SRM), the ability to distinguish a target sound signal from masking noise when both sources are spatially separated. SRM is well described in humans but has been poorly explored in animals. Although laboratory tests with trained individuals have suggested that SRM may be a widespread ability in vertebrates, it may play a limited role in natural environments. Here we combine field experiments with investigations in captivity to test wh

The sound field near the tympanic membrane (TM) is estimated based on acoustic data measured at the tip of a probe inserted into the ear canal, from which the area-distance function of the ear canal is calculated. Such information has the potential to quantify the sound input to the middle ear at high frequencies. Spatial variation in the ear-canal cross-sectional area is described acoustically by quantifying forward and reverse sound waves between the probe tip and a near-TM location. A causal acoustic reflection function (RF) measured in the time domain at the probe tip is used to calculate

Apart from Von Békésy's traveling wave theory, this paper introduces our new comprehension on auditory system based on acoustic resonance in hair cells. Focusing on a rootlet inductance L and a membrane capacitance C of the hair cell, a real-sized cell model is designed so as to form a series LC resonant circuit for the incident soundwaves. In simulation, acoustic resonance is observed successfully at 1120 Hz together with 148-times sound pressure enhancement inside the cell. This model is useful to explain OAE responses, frequency shifts of absolute pitch for aging, pure-tone tinnitus, and ev

The human ear has emerged as a bidirectional gateway to the brain's and body's signals. Recent advances in around-the-ear and in-ear sensors have enabled the assessment of biomarkers and physiomarkers derived from brain and cardiac activity using ear-electroencephalography (ear-EEG), photoplethysmography (ear-PPG), and chemical sensing of analytes from the ear, with ear-EEG having been taken beyond-the-lab to outer space. Parallel advances in non-invasive and minimally invasive brain stimulation techniques have leveraged the ear's access to two cranial nerves to modulate brain and body activit

Some vertebrate taxa, particularly birds and mammals, employ complex vocalisations composed of multiple vocal units for communication. Many anurans, especially treefrogs, appear to possess similar vocal capabilities; however, the complex combinatorial nature of amphibian vocal systems has been studied less extensively. In this study, we recorded 2002 calls from 75 male spot-legged treefrogs (Polypedates megacephalus) in natural choruses and conducted playback experiments to examine their responses to different call types. We found that males can produce rich compound calls by combining three v
