A review of localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP): II. Clinical trials and treatment guidelines.

Localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP) causes severe alveolar bone loss and early tooth loss in adolescents and young adults. If it is not appropriately treated as an infection in association with Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, treatment failure is likely. This review of clinical trials of treatment of LJP uses those trials to construct guidelines for LJP treatment.

The antibacterial and antibiofilm role of cannabidiol against periodontopathogenic bacteria.

AIMS: Bacterial resistance and systemic risks associated with periodontitis underscore the need for novel antimicrobial agents. Cannabis sativa is a promising source of antimicrobial molecules, and cannabidiol (CBD) attracts significant interest. This study evaluated the antibacterial and antibiofilm activity of CBD against periodontopathogens, and assessed its toxicity in vivo model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Antibacterial activity was determined by the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). Biofilm inhibition was determined the minimum inhibitory con

Assessment of Oral Microbial Viability by 2,6-Dichlorophenolindophenol a Redox Agent.

Background/Objectives: This investigation evaluated 2,6-Dichlorophenolindophenol (DCIP), a redox dye, as a colorimetric reagent for rapid quantification of oral bacteria and examined the antimicrobial effects of oral hygiene formulations. Methods/Results: Viable microbial cells reduce DCIP, resulting in a loss of its blue color which can be measured spectrophotometrically. Strains of Actinomyces viscosus, Veillonella atypica, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans grown in the laboratory reduced DCIP. Significant correlations between increasing viable

Clinical and microbiological evaluation of 940-nm diode laser as an adjunct to modified Widman flap for the management of chronic periodontitis: A 6-month randomized split-mouth clinical trial.

Background. The present randomized clinical trial aimed to determine the additive clinical and microbiological benefits of diode laser (DL) with modified Widman flap (MWF) to manage chronic periodontitis. Methods. Seventy-two sites in 36 healthy non-smoking patients diagnosed with chronic periodontitis were randomly assigned to the test group (MWF + active DL) or control group (MWF + sham DL). Clinical (probing pocket depth [PPD], clinical attachment level [CAL]) and microbiological (colony-forming units [CFUs]) measurements were recorded at baseline and 6- and 6-month postoperative intervals.

Causal risk and protective factors in rheumatoid arthritis: A genetic update.

The characterization of risk and protective factors in complex diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has evolved from epidemiological studies, which test association, to the use of Mendelian randomization approaches, which test direct relationships. Indeed, direct associations with the mucosal origin of RA are retrieved with periodontal disease (Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans predominantly), interstitial lung involvement, tobacco smoking and air pollutants. Next, factors directly associated with an acquired immune response include genetic factors (HLA D

Periodontopathogen levels following the use of an Er:YAG laser in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory periodontal diseases are initiated by microbial biofilms. The reduction of the biofilm is important in the management of the disease. This study compares periodontopathogen levels following the treatment of chronic periodontitis using Er:YAG laser (ERL) debridement and mechanical scaling and root planing (SRP). METHODS: Using a split-mouth design, two quadrants were randomly allocated for treatment. Two hundred and fifty-two subgingival plaque samples were collected from 21 patients, before treatment (baseline) and at 6 and 12 weeks post-therapy. Multiplex qPCR was us

Microarray analysis of microbiota of gingival lesions in noma patients.

Noma (cancrum oris) is a gangrenous disease of unknown etiology affecting the maxillo-facial region of young children in extremely limited resource countries. In an attempt to better understand the microbiological events occurring during this disease, we used phylogenetic and low-density microarrays targeting the 16S rRNA gene to characterize the gingival flora of acute noma and acute necrotizing gingivitis (ANG) lesions, and compared them to healthy control subjects of the same geographical and social background. Our observations raise doubts about Fusobacterium necrophorum, a previously susp

Microbial- and host immune cell-derived extracellular vesicles in the pathogenesis and therapy of periodontitis: A narrative review.

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by dysbiotic biofilms and destructive host immune responses. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are circulating nanoparticles released by microbes and host cells involved in cell-to-cell communication, found in body biofluids, such as saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). EVs are mainly involved in cell-to-cell communication, and may hold promise for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Periodontal research has examined the potential involvement of bacterial- and host-cell-derived EVs in disease pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy, but da

Clindamycin promotes phagocytosis and intracellular killing of periodontopathogenic bacteria by crevicular granulocytes: an in vitro study.

Phagocytosis of periodontopathogenic bacteria by crevicular polymorphonuclear neutrophil granulocytes (PMNs) plays a key role in the aetiology of periodontitis. Antimicrobials such as clindamycin have been proven to be effective in treating progressive forms of this disease. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of clindamycin on the phagocytosing properties of gingival crevicular PMNs obtained from 16 patients with rapidly progressive periodontitis (RPP), eight with localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP), 12 with adult periodontitis (AP) and 13 periodontally healthy
