Trends in Psychiatric Presentations Among Children and Adolescents in Alberta: A Pre-/Post-Pandemic Analysis (2017-2022).

BACKGROUND: This study examined psychiatric presentations among children and adolescents (C&A) in Alberta, Canada, across pre-pandemic, pandemic and post-pandemic periods, with a focus on age, biological sex and urban/rural status. METHODS: Utilizing a retrospective cohort design, we analysed health administrative billing data from 1 430 441 psychiatric encounters among Albertans aged 0-17 between 2017 and 2022. Service utilization rates were compared across pandemic phases, and associations were evaluated using one-way ANOVAs and generalized linear models stratified by healthcare setting. R

Graduated drivers licensing and traffic injury-attributable emergency department visits in Alberta, an interrupted time series study.

BACKGROUND: Graduated drivers licensing (GDL) programs are being simplified across Canada. In April 2023, Alberta removed advanced road testing for full (Class 5) licenses and lifted previous restrictions on alcohol use, nighttime driving, and passengers for learners (Class 7). As of June 25, 2023, ∼700,000 drivers gained full licensure without advanced testing. New Alberta drivers are younger, less restricted, and have higher motor vehicle collision (MVC) rates than other provinces. MATERIALS & METHODS: We used interrupted time series analysis with publicly available data from January 2022 t

Geospatial Discrepancy of Chronic Hepatitis B and Hepatitis D Testing in Alberta: A Population-Based Spatial Analysis.

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and hepatitis D virus (HDV) coinfection are major causes of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The geographic distribution of CHB and alignment of anti-HDV testing with CHB burden remain poorly defined. We aimed to examine if anti-HDV testing and seropositivity align with areas of highest CHB burden. Adults with CHB (2014-2022) were identified using a validated serologic algorithm in the provincial laboratory database capturing HBV/HDV serology. Cases were geolocated to Aggregate Dissemination Areas (ADAs), linked to Alberta Health Services zones and rural-urban

Role of Qualified Exercise Professionals in Medical Clearance for Exercise: Alberta Cancer Exercise Hybrid Effectiveness-Implementation Study.

BackgroundCurrent guidelines endorse the integration of exercise into cancer care. The diagnosis of cancer and its treatment, however, may introduce factors that make exercise engagement difficult, especially for individuals with advanced stages of disease. In this paper, we describe the baseline screening and triage process implemented for the Alberta Cancer Exercise (ACE) hybrid effectiveness-implementation study and share findings that highlight the multifaceted complexity of the process and the direct role of the clinical exercise physiologist (CEP).MethodsACE was a hybrid effectiveness-im

Prenatal findings in 11 cases with craniofacial microsomia using the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System, 1997-2019.

Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) primarily includes specific head and neck anomalies that co-occur more frequently than expected. The anomalies are usually asymmetric and affect craniofacial features; however, there are frequently additional anomalies of variable severity. Published prenatal findings for CFM are limited. This study contributes 11 cases with CFM and their anomalies identified prenatally. Cases born between January 1, 1997 and December 31, 2019 with CFM were abstracted from the Alberta Congenital Anomalies Surveillance System, which is a population-based program ascertaining congen

Viral Breakthrough Episodes Among Persons with HIV in Care in Alberta, Canada: Clinical and Public Health Implications.

Unsuppressed HIV viremia damages immunity and increases the risk for secondary HIV transmission. Successful engagement of persons with HIV (PWH) into care resulting in viral suppression is vital. PWH already engaged in care, who, after achieving viral suppression, experience viral breakthrough episodes (VBEs) with a sequence of suppressed/unsuppressed/suppressed viral loads remain problematic. We examined the frequency and outcomes of PWH experiencing VBE. HIV care is provided at no cost to all patients under Alberta's universal health program. All PWH followed at Southern Alberta Clinic, Cana

Posterior Circulation Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score (pc-ASPECT) for the Evaluation of Cerebellar Infarcts.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cerebellar ischemic stroke may be misdiagnosed and may exhibit a delayed time to acute stroke treatment compared with patients with anterior circulation ischemic stroke. The posterior circulation Alberta stroke program early computed tomography score (pc-ASPECT) score has been used to evaluate hyperacute stroke, much as the ASPECT in anterior circulation stroke recently. Our main objective was to evaluate the associations of the clinical and etiological characteristics of ischemic cerebellar infarction patients on admission with their pc-ASPECT scores, as well as the

Identification of Shiga-Toxin-Producing Shigella Infections in Travel and Non-Travel Related Cases in Alberta, Canada.

It has long been accepted that Shiga toxin (Stx) only exists in Shigella dysenteriae serotype 1. However, in recent decades, the presence of Shiga toxin genes (stx) in other Shigella spp. have been reported. We screened 366 Shigella flexneri strains from Alberta, Canada (2003 to 2016) for stx and 26 positive strains were identified. These isolates are highly related with the majority originating from the Dominican Republic and three isolates with Haiti origin. Both phylogenetic and spanning tree analysis of the 26 Alberta and 29 stx positive S. flexneri originating from the U.S., France, Canad

Ambient air total gaseous mercury concentrations in the vicinity of coal-fired power plants in Alberta, Canada.

The Lake Wabamun area, in Alberta, is unique within Canada as there are four coal-fired power plants within a 500 km(2) area. Continuous monitoring of ambient total gaseous mercury (TGM) concentrations in the Lake Wabamun area was undertaken at two sites, Genesee and Meadows. The data were analyzed in order to characterise the effect of the coal-fired power plants on the regional TGM. Mean concentrations of 1.57 ng/m(3) for Genesee and 1.50 ng/m(3) for Meadows were comparable to other Canadian sites. Maximum concentrations of 9.50 ng/m(3) and 4.43 ng/m(3) were comparable to maxima recorded at

Correlation of incidence rates for selected cancers in 29 census sub-divisions of Alberta, Canada, 1961-1981.

Age-adjusted incidence rates for males and females for 36 cancer sites across 29 census sub-divisions of the province of Alberta were correlated with one another. It was hypothesized that cancers which vary together across geographical areas may have common aetiological factors. The correlations were measured by the Pearson product moment coefficient, r, and illustrated by scatter graphs and regression lines. For males moderate correlations were found between prostate and skin cancer and between prostate cancer and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Also moderately correlated were male stomach and small

From intersectional position to migrant standpoint: Ghanaian migrants' knowledges of wellbeing, care, and constraint in Alberta, Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Intersectionality has strengthened migration scholarship by showing how race, gender, class, legal status, culture, and other relations of power shape migrant lives. However, it has been less explicit about how migration-shaped locations become sites of interpretation, critique, and knowledge production. This article addresses that gap by developing the concept of migrant standpoint through the case of mental health promotion among Ghanaians in Alberta, Canada. METHODS: The study used a qualitative design grounded in Ori-Oyena, an African-grounded methodological orientation cent

Women's health workforce and outpatient care delivery in Alberta: Evidence from 26 years of population-based data.

BACKGROUND: Many female-specific health services in Canada are delivered by obstetrician-gynecologists and family physicians. However, little is known about how patterns of care delivery, physician workforce supply, and patient characteristics have changed over time, limiting evidence-informed workforce and health system planning. OBJECTIVE: To examine long-term trends in outpatient women's health service delivery, physician workforce supply, and patient characteristics in Alberta and identify implications for workforce planning, access, and health system reform. A Comprehensive Systematic Well-to-Refinery Carbon Intensity Assessment of Technoeconomically Viable CO2-EOR Operations in Alberta.

Carbon dioxide-enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) in Alberta offers dual economic and carbon management benefits, with the potential to store 1.1 billion tons of CO2 in oil fields while supporting infrastructure for future saline aquifer storage. Despite this promise, greenhouse gas emissions from large-scale CO2-EOR deployment have not been well characterized. This study evaluates the well-to-refinery gate (WtR) emissions of Alberta's CO2-EOR operations through an integrated technoeconomic and life cycle assessment of 13,948 field-pools from the provincial database. A total of 2950 technically v

Using health service data to understand unregulated toxic drug deaths in Alberta (2018-2023): an ecological study.

INTRODUCTION: Ten years into the most acute phase of the toxic drug crisis in Canada, trends in drug-related deaths remain poorly understood. This is hindered by delayed reporting of drug deaths in some provinces, including Alberta. We used publicly available emergency medical services (EMS) and supervised consumption site (SCS) utilization data to examine their associations with drug poisoning deaths to assess if these measures could serve as reliable proxies for fatalities to support evidence-based public health responses. METHODS: Data on Alberta-wide EMS dispatches for opioid poisoning, A
