A rare case report of subscapular artery.

Axillary artery is one of the most important arteries of the upper limb, which is a continua- tion of the subclavian artery. It begins at the lateral border of the first rib and ends at the inferior border of the teres major where it becomes the brachial artery. Axillary artery has six important branches included: 1) Superior thoracic artery 2) Thoracoacromial artery 3) Lateral thoracic artery 4) Subscapular artery 5) Posterior circumflex humeral artery 6) Anterior circumflex humeral artery. Subscapular artery arises from the third part of axillary artery normally and then divides into cir- cu

History of Cholera Outbreaks in Iran during the 19(th) and 20(th) Centuries.

Cholera is an acute infectious disease with high mortality if left untreated. Historically, between the 19(th) and 20(th) centuries seven great pandemics of cholera occurred and worldwide, thousands of people died. Based on an old theory, cholera was considered an air-born disease and the emergence of its outbreaks were attributed to bad weather or miasma. However later in the 18(th) century, British physician John Snow (1813-1858) explained the association of a terrible cholera outbreak in London in 1849 to contamination of the drinking water supply with human excreta. Despite his finding, th

Felix Vicq d'Azyr: anatomy, medicine and revolution.

Félix Vicq d'Azyr was born in 1748 in the small town of Valognes, Normandy. He studied medicine in Paris but he was particularly impressed by the lectures given at the Jardin du Roi by the comparative anatomist Louis Daubenton and the surgeon Antoine Petit. In 1773, Vicq d'Azyr initiated a series of successful lectures on human and animal anatomy at the Paris Medical School, from which he received his medical degree in 1774. He was elected the same year at the Academy of Sciences at age 26, thanks to his outstanding contributions to comparative anatomy. Vicq d'Azyr became widely known after hi

[Medicine in the Cuvier Report on Natural Sciences (1810)].

Through that many sided Report to Napoleon, Cuvier delivers a plain view upon European medicine in 1800. That document remained somewhat ignored as biochemical and physiological information are scattered throughout the text, with no clear link with the "Medicine, an applied science" chapter. Chemistry and physiology of animal beings include most of the recent true data about digestion, metabolism, respiration and nervous system added to the classic irritability. Proved data, still very few, are completed by logical and well organized but theoretical concepts forshadowing future physiology, "mi

Radiological Anatomy of the Pelvis and Hind Limb of the Southern Giant Pouched Rat (Cricetomys ansorgei).

The southern giant pouched rat (Cricetomys ansorgei) is a large rodent utilised in recognition of landmines, pulmonary tuberculosis and Brucella infection. Additionally, they are kept as pet animals. The aim of this study was to describe the radiological anatomy of the pelvis and hind limb and to provide measurements of the hind limb bones in southern giant pouched rats. Radiological examinations were performed in 10 live and five dead adult southern giant pouched rats. The pelvis had a relatively short pelvic symphysis and the ischial tuberosities were less prominent. The obturator foramina a

Bringing to Light the Invisible Lymphatic Anatomy of the Upper Extremity: Report From the 2024 Harvard Radcliffe Institute Accelerator Workshop.

OBJECTIVE: To identify vulnerable upper extremity regions in native lymphatic anatomy that predispose women to the development of breast cancer-related lymphedema. In addition, to identify currently available imaging technologies that could be repurposed for in-vivo lymphatic imaging of these anatomic regions and pathways. BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema remains an incurable complication of breast cancer treatment, but improvements to knowledge of upper extremity lymphatic anatomy and imaging can unlock new techniques for prevention and treatment. METHODS: "Bringing to Light the

A Prefixed Four-Trunk Brachial Plexus with Anomalous Anatomy of All Subsequent Divisions, Cords, and Terminal Branches: A Cadaveric Case Report.

BACKGROUND The brachial plexus is a complex neural structure providing motor and sensory innervation to structures of the arm, shoulder, and upper chest. The anatomical structure is typically divided into roots, trunks, divisions, and cords. Due to the presence of multiple nerve roots and branches, anatomical variations are common. Awareness of variations from normal anatomy is important in imaging, administration of nerve blocks, and surgical procedures of the neck and shoulder region. CASE REPORT We present a case of multiple anatomic variations of the right brachial plexus identified in a c

Milestones in Oculofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: The Discovery of the Levator Palpebrae Superioris and Its Subsequent History.

PURPOSE: This review aims to substantiate attributions of priority for the discovery and first description of the levator palpebrae superioris (LPS) muscle to Matteo Realdo Colombo [Columbus] (1516-1559), and to describe the history of this muscle from ancient to modern times. METHODS: Relevant chapters on eyelid and eye muscles in Colombo's De re anatomica (1559) were translated, and the work was further analyzed from a historical perspective. Literature on the anatomy of human eyelid and orbital striated muscles was reviewed from the publication of the Fabrica (1543) by Andreas Vesalius (15

The patellar ligament: A comprehensive review.

The patellar ligament (PL) is an epiphyseal ligament and is part of the extensor complex of the knee. The ligament has gained attention due to its clinical relevance to autograft and tendinopathy. A variety of anatomical variations of the PL such as aplasia, numerical variations, and vascularity are being reported recently by clinicians and anatomists. The aim of this literature was to review the available literature to provide a consensus regarding anatomic variations of the PL, neurovasculature surrounding the PL, histology of the PL, and various aspects of PL measurements with relevance to

Reissner fibre-induced urotensin signalling from cerebrospinal fluid-contacting neurons prevents scoliosis of the vertebrate spine.

Reissner fibre (RF), discovered by the 19th-century German anatomist Ernst Reissner, is a filamentous structure present in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). RF forms by aggregation of a glycoprotein called SCO-spondin (Sspo), but its function has remained enigmatic. Recent studies have shown that zebrafish sspo mutants develop a curved embryonic body axis. Zebrafish embryos with impaired cilia motility also develop curved bodies, which arises from failure of expression of urotensin related peptide (urp) genes in CSF-contacting neurons (CSF-cNs), impairing downstream signalling in trunk muscles. Here,

Typology of intravesical prostatic protrusions, or so-called median lobes, in middle-aged and older men.

PURPOSE: Changes related to prostatic ageing include an increase of prostate volume and morphologic distortions of the prostatic edges in middle-aged and older men. These changes of the prostate exhibit a certain level of heterogeneity, which is clinically obvious for surgeons, radiologists, and anatomists, and which can be explained by the complex nature of the embryologic/anatomic development of the prostate. While the etiology of the median lobe has typically been attributed to a growth and protrusion of the prostatic area at the top of the utricle, we argue that this is not necessarily the

Why did Donders, after describing pseudotorsion, deny the existence of ocular counterrolling together with Ruete, Volkmann, von Graefe and von Helmholtz, until Javal reconfirmed its existence?

After the rapid spread of strabismus surgery by total tenotomy, which had been proposed by the orthopedist Louis Stromeyer from Göttingen in 1838 and performed by the plastic surgeon Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach on October 26th and by the ophthalmologist Florent Cunier on October 29th, 1839, brilliant researchers studied the physiology of eye movements, resulting in the laws by Franciscus Cornelis Donders on pseudotorsion in tertiary positions of gaze and by Johann Benedict Listing that each eye position can be reached by rotation about an axis perpendicular to the primary and the new position

Bilateral clavicular attachment of omohyoid muscle.

Omohyoid muscle present in cervical region is of particular importance to anatomists as it defines anteriorly the carotid triangle and divides the posterior cervical triangle. It has superior and inferior bellies and an intermediate common tendon. Like sternohyoid, sternothyroid and thyrohyoid muscles, omohyoid is also an infrahyoid muscle, but it differs from them in its course. The infrahyoid muscles are formed from a muscle primordium occurring in the anterior cervical area. Anderson (Anderson, 1881) theorized that the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle is a true infrahyoid muscle, where

The arterial supply of the nasal cavity.

With the development of endonasal flaps, an understanding of the arterial anatomy of the nasal cavity has become increasingly important for clinicians. Despite this, there is a lack of current, accurate overviews in the literature. We have used both endoscopic and gross dissection of six fresh frozen cadaveric heads, alongside a literature review, to produce a comprehensive description of the anatomy. Four heads had their arterial systems injected with red latex. Three injected and two uninjected heads were dissected endoscopically, to provide a total of seven sides. The fourth injected head w

Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731): Historical perspective and contemporary analysis of his teratological legacy.

The Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) in Saint Petersburg is the oldest museum in Russia. It keeps the remains of the anatomical collection of the world-famous 17th century Dutch anatomist Frederik Ruysch. This unique collection was bought and shipped in 1717 by Czar Peter the Great, and presently still comprises more than 900 specimens, a modest number of which concerns specimens with congenital anomalies. We searched for teratological clues in the existing collection and in all his descriptions and correspondence regarding specimens and cases he encountered

Anomalous origin of pulmonary branches from the ascending aorta. A report of five cases and review of the literature.

UNLABELLED: The anomalous origin of pulmonary branches is a rare entity where, either the right or the left pulmonary arteries arise from the ascending aorta and where the aortic and pulmonary valves are separated. Clinical manifestations usually appear in the infant or, more rarely, in the newborn and include respiratory distress or congestive heart failure due to increased pulmonary resistance. The survival rate in an Indian series was 94% with the death of one patient from Fallot tetralogy. We have treated five patients with this congenital heart disease in 20 years; the survival rate was of

Two- and three-dimensional anatomy of paranasal sinuses in Arabian foals.

The 2- and 3-dimensional (3D) anatomy and the morphometric properties of the paranasal sinuses of the foal have received little or no attention in the literature. The aim of this study was to obtain details of the paranasal sinuses using multiplane CT imaging to create 3D models and to determine morphological and morphometric data for the sinuses using the 3D models. The heads of five female foals were used in this study. The heads were scanned using computed tomography (CT) in the rostrocaudal direction. After the heads had been frozen, anatomical sections were obtained in the scan position.

On the origin of Ammon's horn.

INTRODUCTION: Greek and Roman worship of their gods and myths go back to Ancient Egyptian times. Images engraved in Greco-Roman coinage range from references to the assassination of Caesar and legendary stories like the arrival of a snake shaped demi-god Aesculapius to save the Romans from the plague, to invocations of major deities including Apollo the physician or Ammon the protector. DEVELOPMENT: Depicted with the horns of a ram, Ammon was adopted by the Greeks as an epithet of Zeus and later incorporated by the Romans as Jupiter. References to the cult of Ammon appear on tetradrachms mint

A bicarotid trunk in association with an aberrant right subclavian artery. Report of two cases, clinical impact, and review of the literature.

A combination of an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) and a bicarotid trunk (BCT) appears in up to 2.5% of the population. The aim of this study is to report the higher total and male incidence of this variation in the literature and to summarise its clinical impact, providing useful knowledge to anatomists, radiologists, cardiologists, and vascular and thoracic surgeons in order to avoid diagnostic pitfalls and therapeutic complications. A total of 72 (43 female and 29 male) Greek Caucasian formalin-embalmed cadavers were studied. The international literature was reviewed along with the
