[Appendix ... it's not just appendicitis: neuroendocrine tumors.].

Well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumors of the appendix (NETs) are rare in pediatric and adolescent age groups. However, they are the most common gastrointestinal epithelial tumor in this age group and the most common malignancy of the appendix in the general population. The classification of these tumors considers factors such as the proliferation index, size of the neoplasm, and the presence of perineural and/or lymphovascular invasion, which can contribute to distant metastases. Preoperative diagnosis is challenging, except in cases where patients exhibit symptoms of carcinoid syndrome or

The appendix and ulcerative colitis - an unsolved connection.

The appendix is thought to have a role in the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis, but the nature and basis of this association remains unclear. In this Perspective, we consider the biology of the appendix with respect to its immunological function and the microbiome, and how this relates to evidence that supports the involvement of the appendix in ulcerative colitis. In experimental models, removal of the inflamed appendix prevents colitis, and in human observational studies, appendectomy is associated with protection against ulcerative colitis. Further, among people who develop ulcerative col

Myxoglobulosis of the appendix presenting as acute appendicitis.

Myxoglobulosis is a rare form of appendiceal mucocele characterized by mucoid material inside the appendix that resembles fish eggs. It is usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally, but it can also present as a surgical abdomen, which can create a diagnostic dilemma. This case report presents a 37-year-old male patient with features suggestive of acute appendicitis. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen showed features of appendiceal mucocele. The patient underwent appendicectomy through a lower midline incision. The macroscopic finding was myxoglobulosis, and the patient had an unev

Magnetic Appendix: An Uncommon Indication for Appendectomy.

Foreign object ingestions are a common occurrence in pediatrics, often necessitating endoscopic or surgical intervention. The ingestion of multiple magnets poses an increased risk for serious complications. Our article presents a case of a five-year-old boy who swallowed two pennies and four magnets. The latter failed to pass spontaneously and were lodged in the appendiceal orifice resulting in a challenging and unsuccessful endoscopic retrieval and hence required laparoscopic exploration, appendectomy, and partial cecal resection.

Diverticulitis and Diverticulosis of the Appendix: A Case Series.

Introduction Diverticula of the appendix is a rare entity, may be complicated by inflammation/infection, and clinically mimics acute appendicitis. The reported associated risk factors include male gender, Hirschprung's disease, cystic fibrosis and adult age, where some reports claim that they are also associated with an increased risk of appendiceal malignancy. Imaging has a place in pre-operative diagnosis, however, most of the cases were diagnosed during a pathological examination after surgery. They are associated with a higher rate of perforation (more than four times compared with classic

Volvulus of the appendix secondary to appendicular mucocele.

A 44-year-old woman presented with appendicular volvulus secondary to an appendicular mucocele. Appendicular volvulus symptomatology is similar to that of acute appendicitis. Diagnosis is often interoperative. In the event of secondary volvulus, surgical procedure addresses the underlying pathology; in our case, it consisted in appendicectomy and mesoappendix resection.

Double Appendix: Implications for the Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: A double appendix, also known as vermiform appendix duplex, is a rare anomaly in humans, with a reported incidence of 1 in 25,000. The rarity of vermiform appendix duplication makes it a noteworthy medical occurrence. Approximately 100 reported cases have been documented since the first observed case in 1892. There are multiple types of appendiceal duplications, some of which include duplications of other organs. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old boy was diagnosed with acute appendicitis by clinical examination and ultrasound. He underwent a laparoscopic appendectomy and had an unremarka

Ectopic decidua of the appendix: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic decidua is the presence of decidual tissue outside the uterus. Ectopic decidua of the appendix is a rare entity that can present with abdominal symptoms mimicking appendicitis. We report a case of a 39-year-old female patient at 27 weeks gestational age with a 2-day history of right lower quadrant abdominal pain. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient was referred to our hospital with suspicion of either acute appendicitis or threatened rupture of the uterus, the latter of which was considered unlikely following close examination. Therefore, she underwent emergency appendectomy vi

Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Appendix, Colon, and Rectum.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the colon and rectum are rare, although surgeons are likely to encounter appendiceal neuroendocrine tumors while caring for patients with appendicitis. Surgery remains the primary treatment, provided disease is resectable, although for small rectal lesions endoscopic resection is often sufficient. Metastastic disease has a variety of treatment options. Poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas continue to have a poor prognosis.

Lights and darks of neuroendocrine tumors of the appendix.

INTRODUCTION: Neuroendocrine tumors of the appendix are a relatively frequent type of neuroendocrine tumor, usually detected incidentally after appendectomy. Almost all small slow-growing G1 tumors with no risk factors are cured with appendectomy while the rare and aggressive G3 carcinomas may represent a challenge in terms of management and often lead to a poor outcome. In the middle of the spectrum, a number of tumors present with in-between features and sometimes no clear-cut guidance emerges from the literature for directing the management and follow-up of these patients. Perforated Goblet Cell Carcinoid of the Appendix.

Goblet cell carcinoid (GCC) of the perforated appendix is rare, and its pathological features and prognosis remain poorly described. A 71-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital for right lower abdominal pain, vomiting, and high-grade fever. She was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and underwent emergency laparoscopic appendectomy. Intraoperative examination revealed an enlarged and perforated appendix. Histopathological examination revealed GCC of the appendix with subserosal invasion. She underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection with lymph node dissection (D3) following appendectomy.

[Laparoscopic appendectomy for mucinous cystadenoma of the appendix].

Treatment of acute and chronic appendicitis is still an actual problem. There are some rare courses of the disease besides well-known complications of appendicitis. Mucocele is one of the rarest forms of chronic appendicitis. Mucocele is not accompanied by clinical symptoms and diagnosed accidentally in more than 25% of cases. The most serious complication of mucocele of the appendix is malignization observed in up to 36% of cases. Ultrasound, CT and colonoscopy are the most effective methods of perioperative diagnosis. Unclear symptoms, delayed diagnosis and surgical treatment increase the ri

"Anterior appendix": a boon for clinicians and radiologists.

Vermiform appendix is considered as a vestigial organ, and it has minimal or no role to play in the digestion and absorption of food. It is an enigma to the clinicians due to its variable positions and symptoms caused by its inflammation. In the available literature, there are many reports on various positions, size and disease of appendix. However, there is no report on an anteriorly located appendicular attachment to the caecum. During dissection classes for medical undergraduates, an appendix with its base attached to the anterior wall of the caecum was noted. The entire appendix was attach

Clinicopathologic findings in gynecologic proliferations of the appendix.

Appendiceal endometriosis, endosalpingiosis, and decidual lesions have received little attention in the pathology literature, meaning their clinicopathologic features remain unclear. We identified 72 cases of appendiceal gynecologic proliferations with available slides. Clinical presentation was recorded when available, and histologic findings were correlated with clinical data. Cases included conventional endometriosis (51), endosalpingiosis (14), and decidual lesions (7). The patients with endosalpingiosis were significantly older (median 45 years) than those with endometriosis (median 34 ye

The immunological functions of the Appendix: An example of redundancy?

Biological redundancy ensures robustness in living organisms at several levels, from genes to organs. In this review, we explore the concept of redundancy and robustness through an analysis of the caecal appendix, an organ that is often considered to be a redundant remnant of evolution. However, phylogenic data show that the Appendix was selected during evolution and is unlikely to disappear once it appeared. In humans, it is highly conserved and malformations are extremely rare, suggesting a role for that structure. The Appendix could perform a dual role. First, it is a concentrate of lymphoi

Crohns disease of the appendix - a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Crohns disease is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease with unknown etiology. Although the disease may involve any part of the gastrointestinal tract, the most frequently affected site is the terminal ileum. Crohns disease itself is more common in women and in younger patients. Typical symptoms of the condition are diarrhoea, abdominal pain, weight loss and fever. A part of patients may present with extraintestinal symptoms like exanthema, joint pain, conjunctivitis or less often a hepatic lesion. In our publication, we have reported a rare case of Crohns disease with isolat
