Yersinia pestis Caf1 Protein: Effect of Sequence Polymorphism on Intrinsic Disorder Propensity, Serological Cross-Reactivity and Cross-Protectivity of Isoforms.

Yersinia pestis Caf1 is a multifunctional protein responsible for antiphagocytic activity and is a key protective antigen. It is generally conserved between globally distributed Y. pestis strains, but Y. pestis subsp. microtus biovar caucasica strains circulating within populations of common voles in Georgia and Armenia were reported to carry a single substitution of alanine to serine. We investigated polymorphism of the Caf1 sequences among other Y. pestis subsp. microtus strains, which have a limited virulence in guinea pigs and in humans. Sequencing of caf1 genes from 119 Y. pestis strains

Non-consensual sexting among adolescents from ethnocultural minority backgrounds: the role of native peer pressure, self-control, and sexual preoccupation.

BACKGROUND: The non-consensual dissemination of sexually explicit electronic messages (non-consensual sexting) among adolescents from ethnocultural minority backgrounds is a severe form of digital aggression that remains internationally under-researched. METHOD: Integrating Ecological Systems and Social Cognitive theories, the present study examined the prevalence of non-consensual sexting roles (sending, receiving, and forwarding) and the predictive contribution of perceived native peer pressure (i.e., peers from the Greek majority without a migrant background), self-control, and sexual preo

Examination of critical factors influencing ruminant disease dynamics in the Black Sea Basin.

INTRODUCTION: Ruminant production in the Black Sea basin (BSB) is critical for national economies and the subsistence of rural populations. Yet, zoonoses and transboundary animal diseases (TADs) are limiting and threatening the sector. To gain a more comprehensive understanding, this study characterizes key aspects of the ruminant sector in nine countries of the BSB, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Romania, Türkiye, and Ukraine. METHODS: We selected six priority ruminant diseases (anthrax, brucellosis, Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), foot-and-mouth

Patterns of infant mortality from Armenian parish records: a study from 10 countries of the diaspora, 1737-1982.

Using parish records from 10 different countries with small Armenian communities, this study compared patterns of infant mortality in these countries over a period of 245 years. Deaths registered as aged < or = 1 year were used to estimate the numerator for the infant mortality rates (IMR) while the denominator was estimated from births in the same year based on baptisms in the appropriate registers. To check on the validity of using the baptisms as the denominator for the IMR, records of infant deaths were linked with the baptismal records. Thus, from a sample of 273 infant deaths 78.4% had a

The state of vaccine confidence among the general public in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic brought global attention to challenges vaccination programs face in relation to public confidence and exposed important differences in vaccine acceptance worldwide-prompting renewed emphasis on monitoring of vaccine confidence. Most studies in Europe focus on the 27 European Union (EU) countries, with sparse evidence among the broader WHO European Region. This study extend coverage of vaccine confidence surveillance where such research is limited. METHODS: Members of the general public in North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Armenia, Georgia, and

Higher Surgery and Recovery Room Air Pressures Associated with Reduced Surgical Site Infection Risk.

BACKGROUND: Incisional surgical site infections (SSIs) following coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) prolong hospital stays, elevate healthcare costs and increase likelihood of further complications. High air pressure deactivates bacteria and is utilized for commercial food preservation, assuring microbiologically safe pharmaceuticals and sanitizing instruments. However, research on utilizing air pressure deactivation thresholds in surgical and postoperative rooms to reduce rates of SSIs is lacking. METHODS: A case-control study of 801 CABG patients, 128 SSI cases and 673 controls was cond

The effect of air pollution and household environmental indicators on anemia status among under-five children in low-middle income countries: exploring potential machine learning applications on demographic and health surveys.

Exposure to air pollution has been associated with anemia in children, but little effort has been made in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in which the prevalence of anemia is persistently high. This study aimed to assess the effects of air pollution and household environmental indicators on anemia among children aged 6-59 months using machine learning algorithms. The Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) datasets from 45 LMICs were linked with the satellite-derived estimates of annual average particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) based on children's area of residence. HIV care in times of the COVID-19 crisis - Where are we now in Central and Eastern Europe?

INTRODUCTION: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has hit the European region disproportionately. Many HIV clinics share staff and logistics with infectious disease facilities, which are now on the frontline in tackling COVID-19. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of the current pandemic situation on HIV care and continuity of antiretroviral treatment (ART) supplies in CEE countries. METHODS: The Euroguidelines in Central and Eastern Europe (ECEE) Network Group was established in February 2016 to review standards of care for HIV in the region. The group consists of professionals actively invol

Geographical genotypes (geotypes) of poliovirus case isolates from the former Soviet Union: relatedness to other known poliovirus genotypes.

A 150 nucleotide long region corresponding to adjoining segments of the genes encoding polypeptides VP1 and 2A of 84 poliovirus strains recently isolated from patients with paralytic poliomyelitis over the territory of the former Soviet Union (FSU) were characterized by sequencing and/or PCR amplification using specially designed primers. Eighteen isolates were found to be very closely related to one or another of the three Sabin vaccine strains. Three distinct classes of geographical genotypes (geotypes) were discerned among 42 wild-type (non-Sabin) strains of serotype 1. One such geotype (ca

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 genotype 4G/5G associates with skin involvement in Armenian familial Mediterranean fever patients.

There is little and conflicting data on the role of the plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1, SERPINE1) 4G/5G polymorphism in familial Mediterranean fever (FMF). Therefore this study aimed at evaluating the impact of this polymorphism on the disease course in a cohort of 303 Armenian FMF patients. Genotyping for 12 Mediterranean fever (MEFV) gene mutations and the PAI-1 4G/5G (rs1799762) polymorphism were performed by PCR/reverse-hybridization (StripAssay) and real-time PCR, respectively. PAI-1 genotypes 4G/4G, 4G/5G, and 5G/5G could be identified in 4 (5.88%), 30 (18.63%) and 9 (12.16%) p

A novel variant of C12orf4 in a consanguineous Armenian family confirms the etiology of autosomal recessive intellectual disability type 66 with delineation of the phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Intellectual disability (ID) is a feature of many rare diseases caused by thousands of genes. This genetic heterogeneity implies that pathogenic variants in a specific gene are found only in a small number of patients, and difficulties arise in the definition of prevailing genotype and characteristic phenotype associated with that gene. One of such very rare disorders is autosomal recessive ID type 66 (OMIM #618221) caused by defects in C12orf4. Up to now, six families have been reported with mostly truncating variants. The spectrum of the clinical phenotype was not emphasized in p

Dynamics of leukocyte populations, immune-regulatory cytokines, and biochemical parameters in wild boar and domestic pigs experimentally infected with a virulent African swine fever virus genotype II strain.

African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) is the causative agent of devastating disease affecting domestic and wild pigs globally. A previous study of the intranasal inoculation of domestic pigs (DP) and wild boar (WB) with the ASFV genotype II strain "Armenia 2007" demonstrated distinct disease outcomes. This study aims to compare the leukocyte, cytokine and biochemical profiles in experimentally infected DP and WB. Blood and serum samples were collected before infection (day 0), from animals euthanized in groups of six (comprising 3 DP and 3 WB) on days 1, 2, 3 and 5 post infection (pi) and from anim

Use of Fish Skin Graft in Management of Combat Injuries Following Military Drone Assaults in Field-Like Hospital Conditions.

INTRODUCTION: The 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war was an armed conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over an ethnically and historically significant region. This manuscript is a report on the forward deployment of acellular fish skin graft (FSG) from Kerecis™, a biologic, acellular matrix derived from the skin of wild-caught Atlantic cod that contains intact epidermis and dermis layers. The usual intention of treatment under adverse circumstances is to temporize wounds until better treatment can be attained, although ideally, rapid coverage and treatment are necessary to prevent long-term complica

[Efficacy of laboratory methods of diagnostic of purulent bacterial meningitis.].

According to the World Health Organization, every year about 1 million cases of purulent bacterial meningitis (PBM) are registered in the world, of which 200 thousand cases end in death. Bacterial meningitis is polyethiologic, which makes the task of determining the pathogen the main in the organization of epidemiological surveillance, treatment regimens, planning of preventive and anti-epidemic measures. The quality of laboratory diagnostics has a key influence on this. The true incidence of meningitis of different etiology can be altered at low-efficiency laboratory diagnostics. This work wa
