Perception of patterns of musical beat distribution in phonological developmental dyslexia: significant longitudinal relations with word reading and reading comprehension.

INTRODUCTION: In a recent study, we reported that the accurate perception of beat structure in music ('perception of musical meter') accounted for over 40% of the variance in single word reading in children with and without dyslexia (Huss et al., 2011). Performance in the musical task was most strongly associated with the auditory processing of rise time, even though beat structure was varied by manipulating the duration of the musical notes. METHODS: Here we administered the same musical task a year later to 88 children with and without dyslexia, and used new auditory processing measures to

Perceived auditory dynamic range is enhanced with wrist-based tactile stimulation.

Tactile stimulation has been shown to increase auditory loudness judgments in listeners. This bias could be utilized to enhance perception for people with deficiencies in auditory intensity perception, such as cochlear implant users. However, several aspects of this enhancement remain uncertain. For instance, does the tactile stimulation need to be applied to the hand or body, or can it be applied to the wrist? Furthermore, can the tactile stimulation both amplify and attenuate the perceived auditory loudness? To address these questions, two loudness-matching experiments were conducted. Partic

Compensation in neuro-system related to age-related hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a major cause of chronic disability among the elderly. Individuals with ARHL not only have trouble hearing sounds, but also with speech perception. As the perception of auditory information is reliant on integration between widespread brain networks to interpret auditory stimuli, both auditory and extra-auditory systems which mainly include visual, motor and attention systems, play an important role in compensating for ARHL. OBJECTIVES: To better understand the compensatory mechanism of ARHL and inspire better interventions that may alleviate ARH

Musicianship enhances hearing-in-noise performance in older and younger adults: Evidence from the Music-in-Noise Task.

Hearing-in-noise (HIN) perception requires a complex interaction between sensory and cognitive functions. Older adults commonly report HIN difficulties, which contribute to social isolation, depression, and cognitive decline. Musical experience has emerged as a potential protective factor against age-related HIN deficits, with auditory working memory identified as a mediator. However, inconsistent findings regarding musicianship advantages persist, and research examining whether these benefits extend to older adults remains limited. In this study, we investigated the effects of musicianship on

Robust and Efficient Online Auditory Psychophysics.

Most human auditory psychophysics research has historically been conducted in carefully controlled environments with calibrated audio equipment, and over potentially hours of repetitive testing with expert listeners. Here, we operationally define such conditions as having high 'auditory hygiene'. From this perspective, conducting auditory psychophysical paradigms online presents a serious challenge, in that results may hinge on absolute sound presentation level, reliably estimated perceptual thresholds, low and controlled background noise levels, and sustained motivation and attention. We intr

Triple model of auditory sensory processing: a novel gating stream directly links primary auditory areas to executive prefrontal cortex.

The generally accepted model of sensory processing of visual and auditory stimuli assumes two major parallel processing streams, ventral and dorsal, which comprise functionally and anatomically distinct but interacting processes in which the ventral stream supports stimulus identification, and the dorsal stream is involved in recognizing the stimulus spatial location and sensori-motor integration functions. However, recent studies suggest the existence of a third, very fast sensory processing pathway, a gating stream that directly links the primary auditory cortices to the executive prefrontal

Development of the Basic Auditory Skills Evaluation Battery for Online Testing of Cochlear Implant Listeners.

Purpose Cochlear implant (CI) performance varies considerably across individuals and across domains of auditory function, but clinical testing is typically restricted to speech intelligibility. The goals of this study were (a) to develop a basic auditory skills evaluation battery of tests for comprehensive assessment of ecologically relevant aspects of auditory perception and (b) to compare CI listeners' performance on the battery when tested in the laboratory by an audiologist or independently at home. Method The battery included 17 tests to evaluate (a) basic spectrotemporal processing, (b)

Children with Auditory Brainstem Implant: How Do They Perform in Motor and Language Skills?

BACKGROUND: Young children are able to explore new objects and practice language through the acquisition of motor skills that lead to their overall development. Congenital hearing loss and total vestibular loss may contribute to the delay in speech and motor skill development. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between motor development performance, speech perception, and language performance in children with auditory brainstem implant (ABI). METHOD: Ten children, aged 4-17 years (mean age 9.76 ± 4.03), fitted with unilateral ABI for at least 2 years due to the presence of labyrinth

Auditory function in individuals within Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy pedigrees.

The aims of this study are to investigate whether auditory dysfunction is part of the spectrum of neurological abnormalities associated with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) and to determine the perceptual consequences of auditory neuropathy (AN) in affected listeners. Forty-eight subjects confirmed by genetic testing as having one of four mitochondrial mutations associated with LHON (mt11778, mtDNA14484, mtDNA14482 and mtDNA3460) participated. Thirty-two of these had lost vision, and 16 were asymptomatic at the point of data collection. While the majority of individuals showed norma

Speech perception deficits and the effect of envelope-enhanced story listening combined with phonics intervention in pre-readers at risk for dyslexia.

Developmental dyslexia is considered to be most effectively addressed with preventive phonics-based interventions, including grapheme-phoneme coupling and blending exercises. These intervention types require intact speech perception abilities, given their large focus on exercises with auditorily presented phonemes. Yet some children with (a risk for) dyslexia experience problems in this domain due to a poorer sensitivity to rise times, i.e., rhythmic acoustic cues present in the speech envelope. As a result, the often subtle speech perception problems could potentially constrain an optimal res

Speech Perception in Noise Predicts Oral Narrative Comprehension in Children With Developmental Language Disorder.

We examined the relative contribution of auditory processing abilities (tone perception and speech perception in noise) after controlling for short-term memory capacity and vocabulary, to narrative language comprehension in children with developmental language disorder. Two hundred and sixteen children with developmental language disorder, ages 6 to 9 years (Mean = 7; 6), were administered multiple measures. The dependent variable was children's score on the narrative comprehension scale of the Test of Narrative Language. Predictors were auditory processing abilities, phonological short-term m

Early Blindness Shapes Cortical Representations of Auditory Frequency within Auditory Cortex.

Early loss of vision is classically linked to large-scale cross-modal plasticity within occipital cortex. Much less is known about the effects of early blindness on auditory cortex. Here, we examine the effects of early blindness on the cortical representation of auditory frequency within human primary and secondary auditory areas using fMRI. We observe that 4 individuals with early blindness (2 females), and a group of 5 individuals with anophthalmia (1 female), a condition in which both eyes fail to develop, have lower response amplitudes and narrower voxelwise tuning bandwidths compared wit

Auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder: predictive value of radiologic studies and electrophysiologic tests on cochlear implant outcomes and its radiologic classification.

CONCLUSION: The width of the bony cochlear nerve canal (BCNC) and the size of the cochlear nerve are reliable predictors of long-term speech perception abilities for children with auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder (ANSD) after cochlear implantation (CI). In addition, electrical stapedial reflex (ESR) and electrical compound action potential (ECAP) also have considerable value in predicting postoperative speech perception abilities in these children. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether speech perception abilities after CI in children with ANSD can be predicted from the results of radiologic stud

Enhanced Contour-Deviant Mismatch Negativity and Mnemonic Representations in Older Musicians.

Instrumental music performance is associated with enhanced perceptual processing as evidenced by auditory discrimination and speech-in-noise perception. However, little is known about the extent to which auditory perceptual processes support cognition in aging. We investigated whether music training enhances perceptual precision in 26 older amateur and professional musicians (62-85 years, 16 females) and 25 older nonmusicians (61-82 years, 13 females). Participants completed a novel auditory mnemonic discrimination paradigm while electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded. The mismatch negativi

Structural connectivity of auditory-linguistic brain networks predicts success in speech categorization and listening in noise.

Successful speech perception requires listeners to bin continuous acoustic information into discrete phonetic categories. However, some people maintain within-category acoustic information (gradient listening) while others discard category-irrelevant information (discrete listening) during perception. Listeners also vary in how consistently they label speech sounds and more gradient/consistent labeling has been linked with better speech-in-noise (SIN) perception. Here, we test how neuroanatomical properties of the brain's major speech-language and auditory pathways relate to individual differe

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation improves both hearing function and tinnitus perception in sudden sensorineural hearing loss patients.

The occurrence of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) affects not only cochlear activity but also neural activity in the central auditory system. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) above the auditory cortex has been reported to improve auditory processing and to reduce the perception of tinnitus, which results from network dysfunction involving both auditory and non-auditory brain regions. SSHL patients who were refractory to standard corticosteroid therapy (SCT) and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy received 20 sessions of 1 Hz rTMS to the temporoparietal junction ipsilate

Auditory and vestibular function in mitochondrial patients harbouring the m.3243A>G variant.

Hearing impairment is a frequent clinical feature in patients with mitochondrial disease harbouring the pathogenic variant, m.3243A>G. However, auditory neural dysfunction, its perceptual consequences and implications for patient management are not established. Similarly, the association with vestibular impairment has not yet been explored. This case-control study investigated in 12 adults with genetically confirmed m.3243A>G adults [9 females; 45.5 ± 16.3 years (range 18-66); 47.1 ± 21.5 hearing level, dB] compared with 12 age, sex and hearing level-matched controls with sensory (cochlear lev

Single-Channel Focused Thresholds Relate to Vowel Identification in Pediatric and Adult Cochlear Implant Listeners.

Speech recognition outcomes are highly variable among pediatric and adult cochlear implant (CI) listeners. Although there is some evidence that the quality of the electrode-neuron interface (ENI) contributes to this large variability in auditory perception, its relationship with speech outcomes is not well understood. Single-channel auditory detection thresholds measured in response to focused electrical fields (i.e., focused thresholds) are sensitive to properties of ENI quality, including electrode-neuron distance, intracochlear resistance, and neural health. In the present study, focused th
