Electrophysiological Measure of Impaired Information Processing in Drivers with Hematological Malignancy.

The broad goal of this study is to measure remote effects of cancer on brain physiology and behaviors that underpin instrumental activities of daily living such as automobile driving. Studies of hematological malignancies (HM) have demonstrated impairments in multiple brain functions shown to be critical for safe automobile driving. In the current pilot study, brain physiology during driving simulation was examined in 14 HM patients and 13 healthy comparison drivers. Electroencephalography was used to measure the eye fixation-related potential (EFRP)-a positive amplitude deflection evoked appr

Excessive daytime sleepiness in obstructive sleep apnea: implications for driving licenses.

PURPOSE: Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) while driving is a major international public health issue resulting in a more than doubled risk of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs). Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most frequent medical cause of EDS. Therefore, the European Union Directive 2014/85/EU determined that "untreated moderate to severe OSA coincident with EDS constitutes a medical disorder leading to unfitness to drive." The paper aims are to provide a brief review of sleepiness and its implications for driving safety, as well as to describe the subjective and objective methods to accu

Effect of a cognitive test at license renewal for older drivers on their crash risk in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of adding a cognitive test to a license renewal procedure for drivers aged 75 years or older in reducing their motor vehicle collisions (MVCs). The test has been obligatory since June 2009. METHODS: Using monthly police-reported national data on MVCs from January 2005 through December 2016, we calculated the rates of MVCs per licensed driver-year by sex and age group (70-74, 75-79, 80-84 and 85 years or older) for each month together with the ratios of MVC rates of drivers in the three oldest age groups (which are subject to the test) to those of the 70-74 ye

The importance of context in logic model construction for a multi-site community-based Aboriginal driver licensing program.

UNLABELLED: Evidence indicates that Aboriginal people are underrepresented among driver licence holders in New South Wales, which has been attributed to licensing barriers for Aboriginal people. The Driving Change program was developed to provide culturally responsive licensing services that engage Aboriginal communities and build local capacity. AIM: This paper outlines the formative evaluation of the program, including logic model construction and exploration of contextual factors. METHODS: Purposive sampling was used to identify key informants (n=12) from a consultative committee of key s

Improving drivers' knowledge of road rules using digital games.

Although a proficient knowledge of the road rules is important to safe driving, many drivers do not retain the knowledge acquired after they have obtained their licenses. Hence, more innovative and appealing methods are needed to improve drivers' knowledge of the road rules. This study examines the effect of game based learning on drivers' knowledge acquisition and retention. We find that playing an entertaining game that is designed to impart knowledge of the road rules not only improves players' knowledge but also helps them retain such knowledge. Hence, learning by gaming appears to be a pr

[Automobile drivers with retinal diseases - a prospective analysis].

BACKGROUND: The study was designed to prospectively evaluate the driving habits of patients with retinal diseases, who were referred to the specialised retinal ambulatory care center of the Landesaugenklinik Salzburg. The main purpose of this study was to compare the legal requirements for visual acuity, as currently valid in Austria and Germany for driving motor vehicles, with the results found in this patients cohort and to analyse driving patterns of the patients with valid licenses. With these data, it seems possible to suggest a suitable time for a legally mandatory eye examination as to

Epidemiologic characteristics of drivers, vehicles, pedestrians and road environments involved in road traffic injuries in rural Thailand.

This report presents descriptive epidemiology of vehicle-related crashes that caused severe injuries in a defined geographical area in northern Thailand, conducted to determine the nature of injuries and factors that contributed to the crashes. In each incident, the driver and other victims were identified and interviewed by a trained public health worker using a standard investigation form. During 1991, 286 single-vehicle crashes (66.4%), 117 crashes with other vehicles (27.1%), and 28 crashes involving pedestrians (6.5%) occurred in the area. These crashes injured 581 persons (551 vehicle oc

Individuals with severe visual field loss from stroke and glaucoma could have on-road driving safety comparable to normally sighted drivers.

BACKGROUND: Vision is a critical component of safe driving, yet establishing effective legal vision requirements for driver licensing remains challenging. Current EU regulations mandate minimum standards for visual acuity and visual fields, but also allow exemptions based on practical driving tests. This study investigates the on-road driving performance of individuals with visual field loss (VFL) who regained their licences after passing a simulator-based assessment, compared to age-matched and younger, normally sighted controls. METHOD: The study included 72 individuals with VFL who had suc

On-road driving test performance in veterans: Effects of age, clinical diagnosis and cognitive measures.

INTRODUCTION: Veterans are at heightened risk of being in a motor-vehicle crash and many fail on-road driving evaluations, particularly as they age. This may be due in part to the high prevalence of age-associated conditions impacting cognition in this population, including neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's Disease) and acquired neurological conditions (e.g., cerebrovascular accident). However, understanding of the impact of referral diagnosis, age and cognition on Veterans' on-road driving performance is limited. METHODS: 109 Veterans were referred for a driving evaluation (mean

Continued driving and time to transition to nondriver status through error-specific driving restrictions.

We developed driving restrictions that are linked to specific driving errors, allowing cognitively impaired individuals to continue to independently meet mobility needs while minimizing risk to themselves and others. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the efficacy and duration expectancy of these restrictions in promoting safe continued driving. We followed 47 drivers age 60 years and older for 18 months, evaluating driving performance at 6-month intervals. Results demonstrated restricted drivers had safety profiles similar to safe drivers and gained additional driving time to transit

Practicing for and performance on drivers license tests in relation to gender differences in crash involvement among novice drivers.

PROBLEM: Young male novice drivers are overrepresented in injury motor-vehicle crashes compared to females in the same category. This difference in crash involvement is often assumed to include factors such as overestimation, risk acceptance, and sensation seeking, but it can also be related to acquisition of knowledge, skills, insight, and driving experience. Therefore, this study explored possible gender differences among 18-24-year-olds in Sweden regarding practicing as learners, outcome of the driver's tests, and crash involvement during the first year after licensure. METHOD: Data for 20
