Beyond One-Size-Fits-All: Individually Tailored Dietary Interventions in Modern Obesity Care.

Obesity is a complex, multifactorial chronic disease characterized by excessive and/or aberrant adiposity that requires interventions beyond conventional calorie-restriction models. Current clinical guidelines converge on behavioral modification, encompassing nutritional therapy, physical activity, stress reduction, and sleep improvement, as the cornerstone of obesity management, with psychological therapy, pharmacotherapy, and bariatric procedures as adjunctive or escalating options. While traditional "one-size-fits-all" dietary approaches frequently yield suboptimal long-term outcomes, preci

Dietary date (Phoenix dactylifera) modulates antioxidant defenses, immune function, and cecal microbiota to improve performance in Muscovy ducks.

Phytogenic feed additives from agro-industrial byproducts are increasingly explored as antibiotic alternatives in poultry, yet their efficacy in Muscovy ducks remains poorly documented. This study investigated the effects of dietary date (Phoenix dactylifera) fruit supplementation at 0% (control), 5% (D1), and 10% (D2) on growth performance, blood biochemistry, antioxidant status, immune function, meat quality, intestinal morphology, and cecal microbiota in Muscovy ducks over a 42-day feeding trial. Date fruit supplementation dose-dependently improved final body weight, average daily gain, and

Species-specific structuring of gut bacterial and fungal communities in honey bees Apis cerana and Apis mellifera.

Honey bee gut microbiome studies have primarily emphasized bacteria, leaving fungal communities comparatively overlooked despite their ecological and functional importance. Whole-genome shotgun metagenomics of Apis cerana and Apis mellifera revealed fungal assemblages dominated by Ascomycota, with Basidiomycota and Microsporidia in minor proportions, alongside gut bacterial communities composed mainly of Pseudomonadota, Bacillota, and Actinomycetota. The bacterial diversity was markedly higher in A. mellifera (Shannon = 5.90; Simpson = 0.98) than in A. cerana (Shannon = 4.01; Simpson = 0.94; p

Dietary exposure to polystyrene microplastics impairs muscle growth via gut microbiota dysbiosis and hepatic oxidative stress along the gut-liver-muscle axis in Qihe gibel carp (Carassius gibelio var. Qihe).

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants of significant environmental concern; however, their cross-tissue physiological impacts and growth-inhibitory mechanisms in economically important freshwater fish remain insufficiently characterized. This study investigated the systemic effects of dietary exposure to 500 μm polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on the gut-liver-muscle axis in Qihe gibel carp (Carassius gibelio var. Qihe). Fish were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 5, 50, and 100 μg/g feed) for 28 days. PS-MPs exposure significantly suppressed growth performance i

Bilateral intranigral α-synuclein seeding in A53T transgenic mice drives early Parkinsonism and concurrent gut dysbiosis.

Heterozygous A53T α-synuclein transgenic mice (M83 line) typically exhibit late-onset Parkinson's disease (PD) symptoms. This study established an accelerated PD model via bilateral intranigral injection of α-synuclein preformed fibrils (PFF) to characterize central and peripheral pathologies. Three-month-old heterozygous A53T mice received bilateral substantia nigra injections of α-synuclein PFF or PBS. Motor function was assessed monthly. Following the onset of motor deficits, the substantia nigra was harvested for immunohistochemistry and colons were harvested for H&E, transcriptomic analys

The Prokaryotic Community of Hypersaline Soils from the Odiel Saltmarshes: Culturomics Versus Metagenomics.

Hypersaline soils are poly-extreme terrestrial habitats characterized by high salinity, in some cases heavy-metal contamination, temperature fluctuations, and nutrient limitation. These conditions impose strong selective pressures, and many prokaryotic inhabitants still remain uncultured. Here, we conducted an extensive culturomics study of 549 isolates from the hypersaline soils of the Odiel Saltmarshes Natural Area (Southwest Spain) and compared the results with previously generated shotgun metagenomic datasets from the same environment in order to evaluate taxonomic composition, functional

Effects of Fe2O3 nanoparticles on lignocellulose bio-oxidation and heat production during aerobic fermentation of corn stover.

During the fermentation process, heat production directly impacts the fermentation efficiency. Efficient hydrolysis of lignocellulose, as well as complete oxidation of hydrolysis products is critical for heat production during aerobic fermentation of lignocellulosic biomass. This study systematically demonstrates that Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) enhance heat production in lignocellulose bio-oxidation during corn stover fermentation through synergistic effects between reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and microbial community restructuring, thereby optimizing fermentation efficiency and sho

Restaurant wastewater as a sustainable medium for ureolytic bacteria in biocementation.

Restaurant wastewater (RWW) represents an abundant yet largely unexplored nutrient source for enriching ureolytic microbial consortia applicable to microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP). This study characterised RWW collected from a food-service establishment in Johor, Malaysia (COD 1,341 mg/L; BOD 837 mg/L; pH 6.8), and systematically evaluated its capacity to support indigenous ureolytic bacterial enrichment across three media formulations: yeast extract-based (Medium-1), nutrient broth-based (Medium-2), and brown sugar-based (Medium-3). Medium-1 delivered the strongest performance,

First insights into the microbiome of leaks following foregut surgery.

BACKGROUND: Anastomotic leaks are a devastating complication of foregut surgery that can be managed surgically or endoscopically. Studies show that the pathogenesis of leaks is influenced by gut microbiomes. We seek to delineate outcome differences in patients who were successfully managed endoscopically versus those who required surgery and compare differences in microbiome composition. METHODS: An institutional review board-approved, prospectively maintained database was retrospectively reviewed for patients with foregut leaks from 2021 to 2024. Primary end points were endoscopic-only manag

Septic pulmonary embolism associated with periodontal disease: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease, including periodontitis, has been reported to be a rare cause of septic pulmonary embolism (SPE). It is however extremely difficult to isolate the causative pathogen of periodontal disease-associated SPE from blood cultures of these patients. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study, an 85-year-old Japanese man was admitted with fever and worsening malaise. He was later noted to have multiple bilateral subpleural pulmonary nodules on chest computed tomography scan. After admission, Parvimonas micra (P. micra) was isolated from his blood culture. This was followed by a

Isolation, taxonomic analysis, and phenotypic characterization of bacterial endophytes present in alfalfa (Medicago sativa) seeds.

A growing body of evidence has reinforced the central role of microbiomes in the life of sound multicellular eukaryotes, thus more properly described as true holobionts. Though soil was considered a main source of plant microbiomes, seeds have been shown to be endophytically colonized by microorganisms thus representing natural carriers of a selected microbial inoculum to the young seedlings. In this work we have investigated the type of culturable endophytic bacteria that are carried within surface-sterilized alfalfa seeds. MALDI-TOF analysis revealed the presence of bacteria that belonged to

Physical Activity Differentially Affects the Cecal Microbiota of Ovariectomized Female Rats Selectively Bred for High and Low Aerobic Capacity.

The gut microbiota is considered a relevant factor in obesity and associated metabolic diseases, for which postmenopausal women are particularly at risk. Increasing physical activity has been recognized as an efficacious approach to prevent or treat obesity, yet the impact of physical activity on the microbiota remains under-investigated. We examined the impacts of voluntary exercise on host metabolism and gut microbiota in ovariectomized (OVX) high capacity (HCR) and low capacity running (LCR) rats. HCR and LCR rats (age = 27 wk) were OVX and fed a high-fat diet (45% kcal fat) ad libitum and

Two new members of the family Aerococcaceae: Tuanshanicoccus yangjingiae gen. nov., sp. nov. and Tuanshanicoccus lijuaniae sp. nov., isolated from the trachea of Marmota himalayana.

Nine strains of two Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic, catalase-, oxidase- and urease-negative coccoid species, designated as zg-252T, zg-1578, zg-B36, zg-ZUI334, and zg-1292T, zg-A91, zg-BR9, zg-BR22 and zg-BR33, were isolated from the trachea of Marmota himalayana. The nine strains grew optimally at 37 °C, pH 7.0 and 0.5% NaCl. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed that the two novel type strains were most closely related to each other, with low similarity to known species in the family Aerococcaceae. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene and genome suggested that

Lung microbiome on admission in critically ill patients with acute bacterial and viral pneumonia.

Composition of pulmonary microbiome of patients with severe pneumonia is poorly known. The aim of this work was to analyse the lung microbiome of patients admitted to the intensive care unit  (ICU) with severe community acquired pneumonia (CAP) between 2019 and 2021 in comparison with a control group of 6 patients undergoing digestive surgery. As a second objective, the diagnostic capabilities of metagenomics was also studied in a small group of selected patients. The lung microbiome of patients with viral (5 with Influenza A and 8 with SARS-CoV-2) pneumonia at admission showed a similar diver

A longitudinal study reveals the alterations of the Microtus fortis colonic microbiota during the natural resistance to Schistosoma japonicum infection.

The gut microbiota has been demonstrated to associate with protection against helminth infection and mediate via microbial effects on the host humoral immunity. As a non-permissive host of Schistosoma japonicum, the Microtus fortis provides an ideal animal model to be investigated, because of its natural self-healing capability. Although researches on the systemic immunological responses have revealed that the host immune system contributes a lot to the resistance, the role of gut microbiome remains unclear. In this study, we exposed the M. fortis to the S.japonicum infection, carried out a lo

Contributions of the Interaction Between Dietary Protein and Gut Microbiota to Intestinal Health.

There is growing recognition that composition and metabolic activity of the gut microbiota can be modulated by the dietary proteins which in turn impact health. The amino acid composition and digestibility of proteins, which are influenced by its source and amount of intake, play a pivotal role in determining the microbiota. Reciprocally, it appears that the gut microbiota is also able to affect protein metabolism which gives rise to the view that function between the microbiota and protein can proceed in both directions. In response to the alterations in dietary protein components, there are

Characterizing the fecal microbiota of infants with botulism.

BACKGROUND: Infant botulism is the most prevalent form of botulism in the USA, representing 68.5 % of cases reported from 2001-2012. Infant botulism results when botulinum toxin-producing clostridia (BTPC) colonize the infant gut with concomitant in vivo production of the highly potent botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT). The gut microbiota of infants with botulism is largely uncharacterized; therefore, it remains unclear whether the microbiota profile of these patients are distinct in composition, abundance, or diversity. To address this uncertainty, we employed 16S rRNA gene profiling to characteriz

Phylogenetic diversification of the PoxtA ribosomal protection determinant.

OBJECTIVES: Three ATP-binding cassette subfamily F (ABC-F) PoxtA protein sequences are currently represented in NCBI's Pathogen Detection Reference Gene Catalog (WP_002415638.1, WP_209691075.1, and WP_094899500.1), while the number of publicly available sequences has steadily increased. We therefore conducted a curated survey of PoxtA homologue diversity, distribution, amino acid variability, and dissemination-associated genetic contexts. METHODS: WP accessions were retrieved using BLASTp nr and a corresponding data package was obtained from NCBI Datasets v18.0.1. Proteins were aligned with M
