Little is known about the true extent and severity of overuse injuries in sport, largely because of methodological challenges involved in recording them. This study assessed the prevalence of overuse injuries among Norwegian athletes from five sports using a newly developed method designed specifically for this purpose. The Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center Overuse Injury Questionnaire was distributed weekly by e-mail to 45 cross-country skiers, 98 cyclists, 50 floorball players, 55 handball players, and 65 volleyball players for 13 weeks. The prevalence of overuse problems at the shoulder, l

Typical injuries of highly professional classical ballet dancers were evaluated in 108 members of German opera companies. We demonstrated the predominance of overuse-syndromes to acute injuries related to the excessive training-extends. Disorders of the feet, particularly tendinitis followed by low-back pain, chondromalacia patellae, jumpers knee, shin splints and muscle strains are most frequent. Considerable time often elapsed before diagnosing was made because complaints were ignored by dancers. Our inquiry includes range of motion of the spine and the extremities, serial x-rays and a syste

BACKGROUND: New Zealand (NZ) has nearly 14,000 km of coastline and a surfing population of approximately 315,000 surfers. Given its popularity, surfing has a high frequency of injury claims, however, there remains a lack of data on traumatic surfing-related injuries from large population studies. The primary purpose of this study was to examine traumatic surfing injuries in NZ specific to injury incidence, duration, location, type, mechanism of injury and associated risk factors.
METHODS: A sample of self-identified surfers currently living in NZ participated in an online retrospective cross-

BACKGROUND: Persisting back pain is a frequent consequence after severe trauma including injury to the spine. Reports on the incidence and relevance of back pain in severely injured patients in the absence of direct injury to the spine are scarce.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of relevant back pain and its effect on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in trauma patients with spine injury compared to patients without direct impact to spine postdischarge and two years after trauma within an observational study.
METHODS: A two-year follow-up survey by using the Polytrauma Outcome Chart

Background: Poor ergonomics may lead to musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries in surgeons, prompting practice modification, early retirement, and errors. We hypothesized that each plastic surgery subspecialty faces unique ergonomic challenges. We sought to identify the prevalence, risk factors, and impact of MSK injuries among plastic surgeons by subspecialty. Methods: In this systematic review and meta-analysis (CRD420251026702), MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from inception to November 9, 2024, for studies reporting on injury prevalence among plastic surgeons. INTRODUCTION: Information about injuries and its differences in Cliff Diving (CD) and Splash Diving (SD) are unknown. It was the aim to analyse (1) injury rates, patterns and causes; (2) differences (in injuries) between both disciplines; and to (3) identify targets for future injury prevention interventions.
METHODS: From April to November 2013, 81 cliff and 51 splash divers were prospectively surveyed with an encrypted, monthly e-mail-based questionnaire.
RESULTS: During a total of 7857h diving with an average diving height of 13 (±7)m, an overall injury rate of 7.9 injuries/1000h of sport

BACKGROUND: Although snowboarding is already established as an Olympic sport, it is still a developing sport, with new disciplines, more demanding snow installations, and spectacular tricks. A recent study on subjects at Norwegian national elite level showed that injury risk is high and that injuries among competitive snowboarders differ from those seen in recreational snowboarders, with fewer wrist injuries and more knee and back injuries.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and type of injuries among female and male snowboarders at international elite level.

Physical and psychological demands from gymnastics increase the occurrence of injuries and pain among athletes, whose consequent level of catastrophizing could affect rehabilitation and performance. Although the characteristics of each gymnastics discipline may be key factors, they remain unclear. This study aimed to describe injuries, pain, and catastrophizing levels of gymnasts, according to their discipline and training characteristics. A total of 160 gymnasts fulfilled an online survey at the end of the 2021 season. Eighty gymnasts sustained 106 injuries (mainly ankle), and 128 had current

Motor vehicle collisions (MVCs) are a significant cause of head injuries today, but efforts to manage and prevent these injuries extend as far back as the beginning of modern neurosurgery itself. Head trauma in MVCs occurred as far back as 1899, and the surgical literature of the time mentions several cases of children being struck by passing automobiles. By the 1930s, Dr. Claire L. Straith, a Detroit plastic surgeon, recommended changes to automobile design after seeing facial injuries and depressed skull fractures that resulted from automobile accidents. During World War II, Sir Hugh Cairns,

Wrist and hand injuries are common among athletes, and can lead to considerable disability. Dislocations and soft tissue injuries are common and require prompt recognition and treatment. Accurate diagnosis and early immobilization are often key to getting players back to their sport early. Some injuries require surgery; operative intervention allows the player to return to their sport more quickly or with less long-term disability. This article discusses the spectrum of injury from distal radius fractures to mallet fingers, and offers some general guidelines for the surgeon in how to counsel a

We determined the incidence of soft-tissue/musculoskeletal injury occurring during 8,076 recruit-months at risk among recruits undergoing basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, between January and April 1990. We analyzed International Classification of Disease codes relating to initial visit for injuries, and calculated recruit-months from weekly strength figures. Training-related injuries occurred at a rate of 19.9 injuries per 100 recruit-months. Within the sports medicine clinic, iliotibial band syndrome (22.4%), patellar tendinitis (15.1%), and mechanical low

Musculoskeletal disorders account for 29.5% of early retirement among dentists. Most work-related musculoskeletal disorders in Dentistry are spinal. Non-specific and insidious gradual onset injuries such as prolonged tension and pressure on muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints and discs in poor posture or alignment account for more than 80% of commonly seen musculoskeletal disorders that are often regarded as work-related and repetitive strain injuries, arthritis and degeneration. Work performance and activities of daily living could be severely affected. The source and cause of injuries should

OBJECTIVE: Weightlifting is a common form of exercise, especially among adolescents. Many exercises can put the spine and paraspinal muscles under a great deal of stress, both directly with back exercises and indirectly through loading exercises like squats. The national incidence of weightlifting injuries to the spinal and paraspinal regions in minors has yet to be determined.
METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System was queried between 2004 and 2023 for emergency department visits by minors for injuries sustained from weightlifting using the product code for weightlifting

BACKGROUND: Transverse process fractures in trauma patients frequently are diagnosed using computed tomography and result in severe pain and limitation of motion. However, there is no accepted standard of care. Thus, these fractures can be treated with excessive measures or inadequately treated. In this study, diagnosis and treatment of transverse process fractures are examined.
METHODS: The mechanisms of trauma, findings, and associated organ injuries of 50 patients with transverse process fractures and no other spinal injuries treated between 2013 and 2015 were recorded. The same treatment

Although previous retrospective studies have led one to expect injuries in volleyball to be quite frequent and relatively serious in nature, a recent prospective study has shown that actual injury rates are quite low, most injuries did not require a player to lose time from play, and only a very few injuries were sufficiently severe to force a player to take more than 5 days of rest. Anterior cruciate injuries were quite rare in the prospective study. As was previously thought, ankle sprain is the most common injury in volleyball. Front-row positions and attempts to block the ball are most oft

Dancers may compensate alignment at the spine, hip, knees, ankles, and feet to achieve a greater turnout than is available at the hip alone. Such compensations are believed to lead to many of the musculoskeletal injuries experienced by dancers, especially overuse injuries. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between compensated turnout and injury of the lower extremities and low back. Twenty-two university level modern dancers age 19 to 23 participated. Measurements were taken of active hip external rotation (AHER) prone and functional turnout (FTO) in first position. The dif

PROBLEM AND HYPOTHESIS: Over time, some patients with unilateral or bilateral lumbosacral injuries experience chronic low back pain. We studied the sagittal and frontal balance in a population with these injuries to determine whether mismatch in the pelvic and lumbar angles are associated with chronic low back pain.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with posterior pelvic ring fractures (Tile C1, C2, C3 and A3.3) that had healed were included. Foreign patients and those with an associated spinal or acetabular fracture or nonunion were excluded. The review consisted of subjective questionnaires, a

OBJECTIVE: The authors have treated numerous children who have been injured by falling from bicycle-mounted child seats. Despite the greatly increased use of such seats, the understanding of their risk and the importance of helmet use remains alarmingly poor. The objective of this study was to confirm the risk of bicycle-mounted child seats and to evaluate the efficacy of helmets, seat belts, and back seat height in terms of preventing or mitigating contact-type head impacts that occur in falls from bicycle-mounted child seats.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Biometrical dummy tests were performed to

Pediatric skin injuries have primarily been described in typically developing children. Our objectives were to describe the prevalence and pattern of skin injuries of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), to describe how this compared with previously demonstrated skin injury locations in typically developing children, and to identify differences in skin injury frequency and locations between autistic children with and without self-injurious behaviors (SIBs). Children with ASD were recruited between September of 2011 and September of 2014. Demographic information was obtained from the c
