Preservative Contact Hypersensitivity among Adult Atopic Dermatitis Patients.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterised by an impaired skin barrier. The prolonged use of topical preparations containing medications, emollients, fragrances and preservatives may increase the risk of contact hypersensitivity (CHS). In the Allergy Outpatient Unit of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Dermatooncology of Semmelweis University, 5790 adult patients were patch tested between 2007-2021 with the European Environmental Baseline Series according to international standards. Among all the tested adult patients, 723 had preservative CHS (PCHS) an

[Most important contact allergens in hand eczema].

The head and hands are the two most common locations for allergic contact dermatitis manifestation. In hand eczema, contact with a contact allergen is a frequent (co-)factor in the triggering and maintenance of eczema. For all hand eczemas lasting longer than 3 months, an allergological examination by means of patch testing is recommended. In patients with allergic contact dermatitis of the hands, nickel, MCI/MI, fragrance mix I, cobalt, thiuram mix, Balsam of Peru, chromium and fragrance mix II have been described in a multicenter European study as the most common contact allergens of the sta

Air-fluidized therapy in patients with suspected deep tissue injury: a case series.

PURPOSE: The evolution of suspected deep tissue injuries from an initial purple bruise to a significant stage III or IV pressure ulcer may be rapid, even with optimal treatment. This case series describes our experience with air-fluidized therapy (AFT) placed upon discovery of suspected deep tissue injury (sDTI) in an acute care setting. CASES: Five patients with 10 sDTIs were placed on AFT within 12 hours of sDTI diagnosis and evaluated for an average of 9 days. Patients were included in the series if they met the height and weight range of the bed and presented with, or developed an sDTI. S

Adverse reactions to fragrances. A clinical review.

This article reviews side-effects of fragrance materials present in cosmetics with emphasis on clinical aspects: epidemiology, types of adverse reactions, clinical picture, diagnostic procedures, and the sensitizers. Considering the ubiquitous occurrence of fragrance materials, the risk of side-effects is small. In absolute numbers, however, fragrance allergy is common, affecting approximately 1% of the general population. Although a detailed profile of patients sensitized to fragrances needs to be elucidated, common features of contact allergy are: axillary dermatitis, dermatitis of the face
