BACKGROUND: Despite limited evidence from intervention trials, replacing animal-source protein-rich foods with plant alternatives continues to be recommended as part of a healthy dietary pattern.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to examine whether a diet containing fresh, lean beef elicits greater satiety, reduces ad libitum food intake, and is more acceptable compared with a diet containing plant alternatives in women with overweight.
METHODS: Seventeen women with overweight (mean ± SEM, age: 33 ± 1 y; BMI: 27.8 ± 0.1 kg/m2) completed an acute, tightly controlled, crossover desig

The brain's Renin-Angiotensin System plays an important role in the modulation of mental state. Previously we demonstrated that activated angiotensin (Ang) converting enzyme (ACE) 2, which converts Ang II into Ang (1-7), or the intracerebroventricular administration of Ang (1-7) produced an antidepressant-like effect in mice via Mas receptors (MasR). Since the ACE inhibitor Captopril (Cap) increases Ang (1-7) in the brain, it remains unknown whether Cap affects the depressive-like behavior of olfactory bulbectomized (OBX) mice, an animal model of depression. We tested the effect of Cap on the

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder represents a complicated mental disorder characterized by persistent feelings of unhappiness and loss of interest. More evidence suggests a high potential correlation between vitamin D deficiency and depression. However, the underlying mechanisms and the therapeutic potential of vitamin D supplementation are still not properly understood. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on depressive behaviors using a rat model of depression and explore the potential mechanisms involved. Depression is a prevalent mental h

In humans, associations between anxiety and nausea (including motion-induced) are reported but the underlying mechanisms are not known. Hypothermia is proposed to be an index of nausea in rats. Utilising hypothermia and heart rate as outcome measures we investigated the response to provocative motion in rats selectively bred for high (HAB) and low (LAB) anxiety-related behaviors and in non-selected (NAB) rats to further elucidate the potential relationship between hypothermia and nausea-like state. Core temperature and electrocardiogram were monitored in each group (n=10 per group) using telem

Large-bodied, top- and apex predators (e.g., crocodilians, sharks, wolves, killer whales) can exert strong top-down effects within ecological communities through their interactions with prey. Due to inherent difficulties while studying the behavior of these often dangerous predatory species, relatively little is known regarding their feeding behaviors and activity patterns, information that is essential to understanding their role in regulating food web dynamics and ecological processes. Here we use animal-borne imaging systems (Crittercam) to study the foraging behavior and activity patterns

Animal models utilizing predator odor stress are important in understanding implications for post-traumatic stress disorder. 2,5-dihydro-2,4,5-trimethylthiazoline (TMT) has been used to measure stress reactive behaviors during TMT exposure, indicative of stress coping behaviors. In addition, long-term consequences of stress including contextual-induced stress memory, anxiety-like and hyperarousal behaviors, and subsequent increases in alcohol self-administration can also be examined after TMT exposure. In this article, we describe the TMT exposure protocol used in our lab and how we measure di

Continuous treatment with drugs is a crucial requirement for managing various clinical conditions, including chronic pain and neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression or schizophrenia. Associative learning processes, i.e. Pavlovian conditioning, can play an important role for the effects of drugs and could open new avenues for optimizing patient treatment. In this narrative literature review, we summarize available data in experimental animals regarding the behaviorally conditioned effects of psychostimulants such as d-amphetamine and cocaine, the dopamine receptor agonist apomorphine, th

INTRODUCTION: Studies have shown that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gaseous neurotransmitter, has neuroprotective effect. Here, we evaluated the neuroprotective activity of H2S in acute 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) animal model of Parkinson's disease (PD).
METHODS: 6-OHDA was injected through stereotaxic surgery into medial forebrain bundle (MFB) of the right hemisphere to induce severe and fast degeneration in dopaminergic neurons of substantia nigra (SN). NaHS, as donor of H2S, was daily injected at doses of 3 and 5.6 mg/kg for seven days starting a few hours before the surgery. A series of behav

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma- and stressor-related disorder, characterized by bi-directional symptomatic manifestations of increase in both hyperarousal/hypervigilance and numbing/avoidance. In our previous reports, we have proposed an animal model of PTSD using avoidance/escape task sessions in the shuttle box after delivering an inescapable foot-shock traumatization in the same box (Wakizono et al., 2007), and demonstrated the efficacy of 2-week administration of antidepressant on the hyperarousal/hypervigilant behavioral parameters (Sawamura et al., 2004) in the model.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are diagnosed based on the behavioral criteria of impaired social interaction, defective communication and repetitive behaviors. Psychiatric comorbidities, such as anxiety and intellectual disability, are commonly present in ASD. The BTBR T+ Itpr3tf/J (BTBR) mice display a range of autistic phenotypes, yet whether this mouse model is appropriate to study psychiatric comorbidity in ASD remains unclear. We addressed this issue by subjecting the BTBR animals to three-chambered apparatus, open field, object attention test and elevated open platform. Compared to C57B

Lithium treatment in rodents markedly enhances cholinergic agonists such as pilocarpine. This effect can be reversed in a stereospecific manner by administration of inositol, suggesting that the effect of lithium is caused by inositol monophosphatase inhibition and consequent inositol depletion. If so, inositol-deficient food would be expected to enhance lithium effects. Inositol-deficient food was prepared from inositol-free ingredients. Mice with a homozygote knockout of the inositol monophosphatase 1 gene unable to synthesize inositol endogenously and mimicking lithium-treated animals were

Gene transfection with Notch 1 intracellular domain and subsequent growth factor treatment stimulate neuron-like differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). Here, we examined the potential of transplanting Notch-induced BMSCs to exert therapeutic effects in a rat model of chronic ischemic stroke. In experiment 1, Notch-induced rat BMSCs were intrastriatally transplanted in rats at 1 month after being subjected to transient occlusion of middle cerebral artery (MCAo). Compared to post-stroke/pretransplantation level, significant improvements in locomotor and neurological function were

Lacticaseibacillus casei IDCC 3451 (3451) was evaluated for its effects on the gut-brain axis using Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) and mouse models of stress and inflammation. In C. elegans, 3451 extended lifespans by 25 %, improved motility, and chemotaxis, enhanced survival under pathogen challenge, and reduced amyloid beta accumulation by 42 %. Transcriptomic profiling revealed upregulation of genes involved in neurotransmitter signaling and serine/threonine pathways. In the unpredictable chronic mild stress (UCMS) mouse model, 3451 administration increased the time spent in the center

The misuse of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) has drawn a growing concern worldwide for its psychophysiological impacts on humans. MDMA abusers are often accompanied by long-term serotonergic neurotoxicity, which is associated with reduced density of cerebral serotonin transporters (SERT) and depressive disorders. Resveratrol (RSV) is a natural polyphenolic phytoalexin that has been known for its antidepressant and neuroprotective effects. However, biological targets of RSV as well as its neuroprotective effects against MDMA remained largely unknown. In this study, we examined binding

Animal models are widely used to study antidepressant-like effect in rodents. However, it should be mentioned that pharmacological models do not always take into account the complexity of the disease process. In the present paper, we demonstrated that repeated but not acute treatment with a low dose of reserpine (0.2 mg/kg i.p.) led to a pharmacological model of depression which was based on its inhibitory effect on the vesicular monoamine transporter 2, and monoamines depleting action in the brain. In fact, we observed that chronic treatment with a low dose of reserpine induced a distinct dep

BACKGROUND: Neuroinflammation is associated with virtually all major neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although it remains unclear whether neuroinflammation is the driving force behind these disorders, compelling evidence implicates its role in exacerbating disease progression, with a key player being the potent proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α. Elevated TNF-α levels are commonly detected in the clinic and animal models of AD.
METHODS: The potential benefits of a novel TNF-α-lowering agent, 3,6'-dithiothalidomide, were investigated in cellular and rodent models of

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that results from the destruction of neurons in the basal ganglia, and oxidative stress has been implicated in its pathogenesis. 3-Nitropropionic acid (3-NP), a potent neurotoxin, has been reported to induce oxidative/nitrosative stress and causes neurobehavioral and biochemical changes that mimic HD in humans. It also inhibits complex II of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, thereby causing cellular energy deficit. In the present work, we evaluated the effects of a well-known antioxidant on behavioral, biochemical, and mitocho

In previous studies, we demonstrated that tyrosine hydroxylase and neurofilament proteins are regulated by chronic morphine and chronic cocaine treatments in the ventral tegmental area in Sprague-Dawley rats and that the inbred Lewis and Fischer 344 rat strains, under drug-naive conditions, show different levels of these proteins specifically in this brain region. In the current study, we compared Lewis and Fischer rats with respect to levels of adenylate cyclase, cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase and G-proteins in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) and locus coeruleus (LC), brain regions in Spragu

Enhancement by TRH of the dopamine(DA) agonist-induced circling behavior and effect of TRH itself on circling behavior were investigated. TRH(2.5--20 mg/kg, i.p.) remarkably enhanced the circling behavior induced by apomorphine or-L-DOPA in the mice lesioned unilaterally in the caudate nucleus by injection of 6-hydroxydopamine (60OHDA) or by tissue aspiration with subsequent reserpinization. TRH also enhanced the apomorphine-induced stereotypy in reserpinized normal mice. The above TRH-enhancing action of the circling behavior was potentiated, suppressed or unaffected by alpha-methyl-para-tyro

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is one of the oldest viral diseases caused by the rabies virus, belonging to the Mononegavirales order, Rhabdoviridae family, and Lyssavirus genus. Rabies is a zoonotic disease affecting both public health and the livestock industry in India. Rabies causes incurable viral encephalitis, and its progressiveness is considered to be extremely fatal. General awareness regarding the disease, the sequel, prevention, and treatment plays an important role in curbing deaths due to rabies. Now, with an increase in the number of street dogs, it has become increasingly important for re
