Short-term binge drinking, marijuana, and recreational drug use trajectories in a prospective cohort of people living with HIV at the start of COVID-19 mitigation efforts in the United States.

BACKGROUND: At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, HIV experts suggested that an increase in mental health diagnoses and substance use among people living with HIV (PLHIV) may be an unintended consequence of COVID-19 mitigation efforts (e.g., limiting social contact). We evaluated short-term trajectories in binge drinking, marijuana, and recreational drug use in a prospective cohort of PLHIV. METHODS: Data (N = 2121 PLHIV) consist of survey responses on substance use behaviors from two pre-COVID-19 (October 2018-September 2019) and one COVID-19-era (April 2020-September 2020) timepoints withi

Alcohol Intake and Binge Drinking and Their Association With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Emphysema, and Chronic Bronchitis: A Retrospective Study Using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) Database.

Background and objective While alcohol intake and binge drinking have been associated with various types of cancers, their relationship with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) remains unclear. Understanding this association is crucial to identifying potential behavioral or biological factors influencing COPD, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis risk. This study aimed to evaluate the association between binge drinking and COPD, emphysema, or chronic bronchitis, and assess the odds of developing COPD in participants with binge drinking based on demographic and socioeconomic characteristic

High-Risk Sexual Behavior, Binge Drinking and Use of Stimulants are Key Experiences on the Pathway to High Perceived HIV Risk Among Men Who Have Sex with Men in Brazil.

In Brazil, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is currently available for gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. As PrEP use depends on an individual's perceived risk, we explored pathways by which potentially modifiable behaviors lead to high perceived HIV risk. Using online surveys (N = 16,667), we conducted a path analysis on the basis of ordered sequences of multivariate logistic regressions. High perceived HIV risk was low (26.3%) compared to condomless receptive anal sex (41.4%). While younger age increased the odds of binge drinking and of condomless receptive anal sex, it was

Are Low-to-Moderate Average Alcohol Consumption and Isolated Episodes of Binge Drinking in Early Pregnancy Associated with Facial Features Related to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in 5-Year-Old Children?

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) typically is observed among individuals with high prenatal alcohol exposures (PAE), but exposure histories obtained in clinical diagnostic settings are often inaccurate. The present analysis used the Lifestyle During Pregnancy Study (LDPS) to assess the potential effects of low-to-moderate average weekly alcohol consumption and binge drinking in early pregnancy on facial features associated with FAS among children 5 years of age. METHODS: The analysis is a prospective follow-up study of 670 women and their children sampled from the LDPS cohort based on

Associations between domain-specific physical activity, sedentary behavior, and binge drinking among adults in the United States and China: evidence from a cross-sectional study, daily tracking, and randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is linked to a range of diseases and has become a global public health concern. Engaging in physical activity may help reduce the prevalence of binge drinking and excessive alcohol consumption. However, the association may vary depending on the type of physical activity. This study aimed to investigate the association between different types of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and binge drinking. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included: (1) a cross-sectional survey included 6,707 individuals aged 20 years and older from the NHANES database between 2015 and

Characteristics of binge drinkers in Europe.

Binge drinking has been shown to be associated with considerable social harm and disease burden. This review aims to give an overview from a European perspective of the socio-demographical, individual, and social factors that affect binge drinking and to identify effective interventions to reduce binge drinking. To this end, a computer-assisted search of relevant articles was conducted. Results showed that males tended to binge drinking more frequently than females. Binge drinking was most prevalent among adolescents and young adults, and prevalence levelled off later in life. Socio-economic c

Factors Predicting Trial Engagement, Treatment Satisfaction, and Health-Related Quality of Life During a Web-Based Treatment and Social Networking Trial for Binge Drinking and Depression in Young Adults: Secondary Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Mental health and alcohol use problems are among the most common causes of disease burden in young Australians, frequently co-occur (comorbidity), and lead to significant lifetime burden. However, comorbidities remain significantly underdetected and undertreated in health settings. Digital mental health tools designed to identify at-risk individuals, encourage help-seeking, or deliver treatment for comorbidity have the potential to address this service gap. However, despite a strong body of evidence that digital mental health programs provide an effective treatment option for a ran

Young adults, alcohol, crime and disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related crime is increasingly being recognized as a problem in cities and towns with popular entertainment districts. Crime and disorder linked to alcohol has been particularly connected with binge drinking or heavy sessional drinking. Research evidence indicates that it is the young adult age group who are most likely to be involved in crime and disorder and the most likely to binge drink. This paper examines the relationship between binge drinking and criminal and disorderly behaviour among 18- to 24-year-olds. METHOD: Secondary analysis was undertaken of the 1998/1999 Y

The relationship between recent alcohol use and sexual behaviors: gender differences among sexually transmitted disease clinic patients.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking is associated with risky sexual behaviors and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Few studies have investigated this by gender or in an STD clinic. This cross-sectional study examined the association between binge drinking and risky sexual behaviors/STDs among patients attending an urban STD clinic. METHOD: A total of 671 STD clinic patients were tested for STDs, and queried about recent alcohol/drug use and risky sexual behaviors using audio computer-assisted-self-interview. The association between binge drinking and sexual behaviors/STDs was analyzed using logis

Manifestation of Drinking Profiles in Daily Life: Associations With Momentary Negative Affect, Impulsivity, and Drinking.

BACKGROUND: Negative affect and impulsivity can influence one another and have momentary influences on emerging adult drinking behaviors. Heterogeneity in drinking patterns/profiles, such as frequent heavy or light drinking, may also reflect differences in these momentary effects potentially due to distinct putative drinking mechanisms. METHODS: Emerging adults (N = 366; 64.4% women) with at least one binge drinking episode in the past 30 days completed a baseline survey and 14-day ecological momentary assessments (EMA) with multiple daily surveys (n ≥ 7; M = 5.33). Differences in the relation of binge drinking and prescription drug misuse to suicide ideation and attempts between college-aged adults and adults above the age of 25: Findings from the 2015-2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH).

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the role of age in risk associated with drug misuse and binge drinking, this study examines the differential relations of binge drinking and prescription drug misuse to risk of suicidal ideation and attempts in young adults of college age (18-24) compared to those above the age of 25. METHODS: We used data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) for the years 2015 through 2019 (N = 269,078). RESULTS: The study found that, for adults above college age, the presence of any past-month binge drinking was associated with a higher likelihood of past-year suici

Alcohol use among HIV-positive women of childbearing age, United States, 2013-2014.

More than one-quarter of the adults living with diagnosed HIV infection in the US are women. Binge drinking (i.e., ≥4 alcoholic drinks per occasion for women) is associated with poor HIV treatment compliance, HIV incidence, and unplanned pregnancy. However, little is known about the prevalence of binge drinking among women of childbearing age who are living with HIV (WLWH) and health risk behaviours among those who binge drink. Using the 2013-2014 data cycles of Medical Monitoring Project, we assessed the weighted prevalence of drinking patterns by socio-demographic, clinical and reproductive

Predicting transitions in alcohol use among adolescents and young adults by nicotine and tobacco products used.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize transitions in alcohol consumption behaviors by nicotine and tobacco products (NTPs) used across a diverse cohort of adolescents and young adults. METHODS: A three-state Markov model was applied to six waves of data (2019-2021) collected biannually for 2608 (Nobs=14,152) participants in the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance System 2.0. We examined nine possible transitions across three exclusive states of alcohol use (none, past 30-day drinking, and past 14-day binge drinking). We estimated the probability of transitioning between alcohol use behav

Co-occurring suicidal ideation and alcohol-related problems: An intersectional analysis of Native American and White adults with minoritized sexual identities.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in suicidal ideation (SI) and alcohol use disorder (AUD) are evident in both Native American and minoritized sexual identity groups, relative to non-Hispanic White and heterosexual groups. However, Native Americans report lower drinking and binge drinking rates than White adults. Persons with intersecting identities, specifically Native Americans with minoritized sexual identities, may be at greater risk for SI and drinking, binge drinking, and AUD than White and Native American heterosexual adults. Morning sympathetic activity after evening binge alcohol consumption.

Binge alcohol consumption elicits acute and robust increases of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), yet the impact of evening binge drinking on morning-after MSNA is unknown. The present study examined the effects of evening binge alcohol consumption on polysomnographic sleep and morning-after MSNA. We hypothesized that evening binge drinking (i.e. 4-5 drink equivalent in <2 h) would reduce sleep quality and increase morning-after blood pressure (BP) and MSNA. Following a familiarization night within the sleep laboratory, 22 participants (12 men, 10 women; 25 ± 1 yr) were examined after

Containment Measures and Alcohol Consumption Among Drinking Higher Education Students Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Multilevel Analysis in 25 Countries.

Hazardous alcohol use tends to be more prominent among higher education students. The COVID-19 pandemic severely altered student life, raising questions on its impact on students' alcohol use patterns. The current study examined cross-country variations in drinking behaviors (weekly drinking and binge drinking), and the extent to which these variations were associated with containment measures implemented during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data were obtained from the COVID-19 International Student Well-being Study, covering students in 25 middle- and upper-high income countries. D
