Influence of metal oxide catalyst on co-pyrolysis of biomass and COVID-19 waste.

The disposal of waste generated by the COVID-19 pandemic is still a challenge to the government in most countries. The present study shines its light on the catalytic effect of metal oxide on converting COVID-19 waste i.e. used face masks into valuable products through co-pyrolysis. The co-pyrolysis trial was carried out for a mixture of waste face mask (WFM) and Moringa oleifera (MO) biomass at a constant temperature of 450°C for 15 min of resident time. This investigation focuses on studying the catalytic effect of calcium oxide (CaO) on the by-products of the pyrolysis process. From the FT-

Open biomass burning emissions and their contribution to ambient formaldehyde in Guangdong province, China.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) plays a vital role in atmospheric chemistry and O3 formation. Open biomass burning (OBB) is considered to be an important source of HCHO; however, its quantitative contribution to ambient HCHO remains poorly understood due to the lack of reliable high-resolution emission inventories. In this study, a satellite-based method coupled with local emission factors was developed to estimate the hourly primary emissions of HCHO and volatile organic compound (VOC) precursors from OBB in Guangdong (GD) Province of southern China. Furthermore, the contribution of OBB to ambient HCHO w

Lignocellulosic Biomass of C3 and C4 Perennial Grasses as a Valuable Feedstock for Particleboard Manufacture.

Looking for new alternative raw materials is one of the key issues in line with a bioeconomy approach, particularly for particleboard manufacturing. In this framework, this paper presents a comparison of some physico-mechanical properties and the formaldehyde contents of particleboards made with 30% substitution of grass biomass from six perennial grass species. Our studies indicate relatively high values of mechanical properties for particleboards made with the addition of biomass from grasses with the C4 photosynthetic pathway: Miscanthus x giganteus and switchgrass (Panicum virgatum). Adapting an Ergosterol Extraction Method with Marine Yeasts for the Quantification of Oceanic Fungal Biomass.

Ergosterol has traditionally been used as a proxy to estimate fungal biomass as it is almost exclusively found in fungal lipid membranes. Ergosterol determination has been mostly used for fungal samples from terrestrial, freshwater, salt marsh- and mangrove-dominated environments or to describe fungal degradation of plant matter. In the open ocean, however, the expected concentrations of ergosterol are orders of magnitude lower than in terrestrial or macrophyte-dominated coastal systems. Consequently, the fungal biomass in the open ocean remains largely unknown. Recent evidence based on micros

A kinetic study on the catalysis of KCl, K2SO4, and K2CO3 during oxy-biomass combustion.

Biomass combustion under the oxy-fuel conditions (Oxy-biomass combustion) is one of the approaches achieving negative CO2 emissions. KCl, K2CO3 and K2SO4, as the major potassium species in biomass ash, can catalytically affect biomass combustion. In this paper, the catalysis of the representative potassium salts on oxy-biomass combustion was studied using a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Effects of potassium salt types (KCl, K2CO3 and K2SO4), loading concentrations (0, 1, 3, 5, 8 wt%), replacing N2 by CO2, and O2 concentrations (5, 20, 30 vol%) on the catalysis degree were discussed. The bacteriological composition of biomass recovered by flushing an operational drinking water distribution system.

This study investigates the influence of pipe characteristics on the bacteriological composition of material mobilised from a drinking water distribution system (DWDS) and the impact of biofilm removal on water quality. Hydrants in a single UK Distribution Management Area (DMA) with both polyethylene and cast iron pipe sections were subjected to incremental increases in flow to mobilise material from the pipe walls. Turbidity was monitored during these operations and water samples were collected for physico-chemical and bacteriological analysis. DNA was extracted from the material mobilised in

Emission reductions from woody biomass waste for energy as an alternative to open burning.

Woody biomass waste is generated throughout California from forest management, hazardous fuel reduction, and agricultural operations. Open pile burning in the vicinity of generation is frequently the only economic disposal option. A framework is developed to quantify air emissions reductions for projects that alternatively utilize biomass waste as fuel for energy production. A demonstration project was conducted involving the grinding and 97-km one-way transport of 6096 bone-dry metric tons (BDT) of mixed conifer forest slash in the Sierra Nevada foothills for use as fuel in a biomass power co

Influence of calcium content of biomass-based materials on simultaneous NOx and SO2 reduction.

Pyrolysis products of biomass (bio-oils) have been shown to cause a reduction in NOx emissions when used as reburn fuels in combustion systems. When these bio-oils are processed with lime, calcium is ion-exchanged and the product is called BioLime. BioLime, when introduced into a combustion chamber, pyrolyzes and produces volatile products that reduce NOx emissions through reburn mechanisms. Simultaneously, calcium reacts with SO2 to form calcium sulfate and thus reduces SO2 emissions. This paper reports the characterization of composition and pyrolysis behavior of two BioLime products and the

Multi-horizon forecasting for decision support in a thermally delayed biomass-fired boiler system.

Thermally delayed biomass-boiler systems exhibit heterogeneous temporal responses that complicate forecasting and operational warning. This study analysed long-term field data from a biomass-fired boiler system to characterise thermal-response lags and evaluate multi-horizon forecasting of the P1 thermal-storage-tank temperature at 60-, 120-, and 180-min horizons. Robust cross-correlation analysis showed statistically detectable but weak associations between P1 temperature and the combustion-related operational inputs, while daily lag estimates exhibited broad and heterogeneous distributions,

Manure inoculation shapes arsenic speciation and phase partitioning during biodegradation of Pteris vittata biomass.

Arsenic-hyperaccumulator P. vittata has been used in phytoremediation of As-contaminated soil, yet As speciation and phase partitioning among solid, liquid and gas during degradation of As-rich biomass remain poorly understood. Here, P. vittata biomass containing 125 mg kg-1 As was degraded in a bioreactor for 5 weeks, with pig manure as a microbial inoculant. Manure addition enhanced biomass reduction by 57% from 47% in the control. While initially As was in the solid phase, estimated As was accumulated primarily in the gas and solid phases in the control after degradation. Manure addition ma

Understanding Electrochemical Alcohol Hydrogenolysis Enabled by Carbonyl Reduction in Lignocellulosic Biomass-Derived Aromatic Oxygenates.

Molecules derived from lignocellulosic biomass are oxygenates with multiple oxygen-containing functional groups, such as hydroxyl and carbonyl groups. Therefore, the ability to selectively reduce a specific oxygenate group is essential for the reductive upgrading of such molecules. Previous studies on electrochemical biomass conversion have shown that alcohol hydrogenolysis, which involves cleavage of the σ(C-Oalcohol) bond, is extremely challenging for furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derivatives, including furfuryl alcohol, 5-methylfurfuryl alcohol (MFA), and 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)

Electrocatalytic C-C Coupled Oligomerization From Biomass Molecules Through Pd Single-Atom Interfacial Regulation.

Fossil-derived diesel raises sustainability and air-quality concerns, motivating biomass-based alternatives; however, current biodiesel routes suffer from food-fuel competition, poor fuel properties, and energy-intensive upgrading. Electrocatalytic C─C coupling of biomass molecules followed by hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) offers a cleaner pathway, yet has been limited to dimer formation. Here, we successfully resolved this longstanding bottleneck through construction of Pd1Cu single-atom alloy electrocatalyst, a trimer of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural is obtained with 44.7% selectivity. Chemically Degradable Carbon Dioxide-Incorporated Polyurethane From Biomass-Derived Polyester Polyols as Sustainable Adhesives.

Polyurethane (PU) adhesives are extensively employed in flexible packaging owing to their strong adhesion and excellent wettability. However, most conventional PU adhesives are petroleum-based, which has driven growing interest in biobased alternatives. In this article, we synthesized biobased PU adhesives for flexible packaging applications using 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and carbon dioxide (CO2). FDCA-based polyols (FPs) (2500-3500 g mol-1) with processable viscosities were prepared from FDCA, succinic acid, and 1,3-propanediol. To further enhance adhesion by increasing hydrogen-bond
