Somatic cell nuclear transfer technique (SCNT) has proved to be an outstanding method of multiplication of elite animals but accompanied with low efficiency and live birth rate of cloned animals. Epigenetic alterations of DNA has been one of the culprits behind this issue. Cloned embryos are found to deviate slightly from regular pattern of demethylation and re-methylation at the time of nuclear reprogramming and embryonic development when compared with embryos produced by in vitro fertilization (IVF). Thus, the present study was aimed at evaluating global DNA methylation profiles of cloned em

BACKGROUND: Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a severe infectious disease that can be fatal and infects both domestic and wild animals, including cows, buffalo, deer, bison, exotic ruminants, and even pigs.
AIM: MCF is suspected in Buffalo, Basrah, Iraq. Therefore, a clinical, hematological, biochemical, and diagnostic study was conducted.
METHODS: The study was conducted on 163 local Iraqi buffalo breeds, aged 2-6 years, of both sexes, showing signs suggestive of MCF. The control group comprised 25 clinically healthy local buffalo breeds. The disease was diagnosed based on clinical manifes

Leishmania infantum is a vector-borne protozoan causing zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis in the Mediterranean basin, where dogs are the primary reservoir. However, infection in various domestic and wild mammals raises questions about their epidemiological roles. Reliable diagnosis in non-canine species remains challenging, as most serological assays are developed for dogs and cats. This study evaluated a commercially available multispecies rapid immunochromatographic test (Uranotest® Leishmania feline) for detecting anti-Leishmania antibodies in a diverse panel of domestic and non-domestic anim

Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis affects dairy animals (Animal paratuberculosis or Johne's disease) and humans (Human paratuberculosis or Crohn's disease). The dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) is a valuable livestock in arid regions, providing milk, meat, leather, and other products, in addition to being used as a pack animal. The study aims to examine the risk potential and molecular strain typing of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) in dromedary camels raised in Rajasthan, India- a region with the highest camel population in the country. Faecal samples (88) we

Hepatitis E is recognized as a zoonosis, and swine are known reservoirs, but how broadly enzootic its causative agent, hepatitis E virus (HEV), is remains controversial. To determine the prevalence of HEV infection in animals, a serological assay with capability to detect anti-HEV-antibody across a wide variety of animal species was devised. Recombinant antigens comprising truncated capsid proteins generated from HEV-subgenomic constructs that represent all four viral genotypes were used to capture anti-HEV in the test sample and as an analyte reporter. To facilitate development and validation

Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. are wide-spread pathogens of humans and many species of mammals. The ways of transmission are very complex and difficult to define. Both parasites occur in similar environments and share a broad host range. However, in Poland there is still little known about the epidemiology of these parasites due to the paucity of data on human cases and only few studies in wildlife. The aim of our study was to determine the distribution of two intestinal protozoa in a few species of protected and game mammals in North-Eastern Poland. Additionally, we wanted to compare p

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate stable rough mutants derived from Brucella melitensis 16M and B suis 2579 (biovar 4) as vaccines against homologous and heterologous Brucella spp in the BALB/c mouse model. DESIGN, ANIMALS, AND PROCEDURE: Rough mutants VTRM1 and VTRS1 were obtained from B melitensis 16M and B suis 2579, respectively, by allelic exchange of rfbU gene encoding mannosyltransferase with a Tn5-disrupted rfbU gene. Mice were vaccinated with VTRM1 or VTRS1 and challenge exposed 8 weeks later.
RESULTS: VTRM1 and VTRS1 replicated extensively in the spleen during the first 3 weeks of infection, t

Q Fever is a zoonotic disease of significant animal and public health concern, caused by Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii), an obligate intracellular bacterium. This study was done to evaluate the diagnostic sensitivity (DSe) and diagnostic specificity (DSp) of three diagnostic methods to diagnose C. burnetii infection in cattle and buffaloes in Punjab, India: an indirect ELISA method applied in serum samples and a trans-Polymerase Chain Reaction (trans-PCR) technique applied in milk samples and genital swabs, using a Bayesian latent class analysis. Conditional independence was assumed between t

Respiratory disease and poor lamb recruitment have been identified as limiting factors for bighorn-sheep populations. Haemophilus somnus (recently reclassified as Histophilus somni) is associated with respiratory disease in American bison, domestic sheep, and cattle. It is also harbored in their reproductive tracts and has been associated with reproductive failure in domestic sheep and cattle. Therefore, reproductive tract and lung samples from bighorn sheep were evaluated for the presence of this organism. Organisms identified as H. somnus were isolated from 6 of 62 vaginal but none of 12 pre

A number of theories regarding the aetiology of Crohn's disease have been proposed. Diet, infections, other unidentified environmental factors and immune disregulation, all working under the influence of a genetic predisposition, have been viewed with suspicion. Many now believe that Crohn's disease is a syndrome caused by several aetiologies. The two leading theories are the infectious and autoimmune theories. The leading infectious candidate is Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Mycobacterium paratuberculosis), the causative agent of Johne's disease, an inflammatory bowel disea

Six highly repeated DNA families were analyzed using Southern blotting and fluorescence in situ hybridization in a comparative study of 46 species of artiodactyls belonging to seven of the eight extant taxonomic families. Two of the repeats, the dispersed bovine-Pst family and the localized 1.715 component, were found to have the broadest taxonomic distributions, being present in all pecoran ruminants (Giraffidae, Cervidae, Antilocapridae, and Bovidae), indicating that these repeats may be 25-40 million years old. Different 1.715 restriction patterns were observed in different taxonomic famili

Our objective was to determine the effects of intrauterine infusion of proteolytic enzymes in buffaloes with subclinical endometritis (SCE) at estrus on the resolution of endometrial inflammation and reproductive performance. Buffaloes at spontaneous estrus (E1) were screened for SCE by endometrial cytology to identify SCE (≥5% PMN, n = 22) and non-SCE (<5% PMNs, n = 14) animals. All buffaloes underwent uterine ultrasonographic examination, low volume uterine lavage (cytokines and acute phase proteins) and blood sampling (cytokines and acute-phase proteins) at E1. On the same day (E1), SCE buf

To assess the effects of challenge dose and stage of gestation on infection and abortion, 35 elk were conjunctivally challenged with virulent Brucella abortus strain 2308 (S2308) during pregnancy. Seventeen elk were experimentally challenged early in the second trimester of gestation (December) with high (approximately 108 CFU) or low challenge (approximately 107 CFU) treatments having 8 and 9 pregnant elk, respectively. Other pregnant elk were experimentally challenged at a later challenge time (approximately early third trimester, February), with high and low challenge treatments having 8 an

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF), a frequently fatal herpesviral disease primarily of ruminant species, has been sporadically reported in pigs. All cases of naturally occurring porcine MCF reported to date have been linked to ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2), a gammaherpesvirus in the genus Macavirus carried by sheep. Experimental induction of MCF by aerosolization of the virus in nasal secretions collected from infected sheep has been successful in bison, cattle and rabbits. The goals of this study were to determine the susceptibility of pigs to MCF following experimental intranasal inoculation of

Ponderosa pine needles cause abortion and a poorly described toxicosis when eaten by cattle. In previous trials, the abortifacient compound of pine needles was identified as isocupressic acid. At abortifacient doses, isocupressic acid caused no other toxicosis. However, other pine needle fractions, similar in composition to several commercially available rosin products, caused no abortion but were very toxic. The purpose of this study was to describe the toxicoses of ponderosa pine, compare its toxicity with other rosin and related pine products, and identify the toxin. Four groups of three pr

BACKGROUND: Infection of susceptible livestock species, including domestic cattle and American bison, with ovine gammaherpesvirus-2 (OvHV-2), a gammaherpesvirus in the genus Macavirus, can result in an often-fatal disease known as sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF). Prevention of SA-MCF via vaccination is a key goal to support livestock producers.
METHODS: We assessed the safety and immunogenicity of a viral-vectored vaccine candidate consisting of a non-pathogenic recombinant alcelaphine gammaherpesvirus-1 expressing the OvHV-2 glycoprotein B (rAlHV-1/OvHV-2gB). The vaccine,

Pasteurella multocida capsular types A, D, and F cause disease in many animal hosts, including bovine respiratory disease in cattle, which is one of the most globally significant animal diseases. Additionally, P. multocida capsular types B and E cause haemorrhagic septicaemia, a devastating disease primarily of cattle, water buffalo, and bison that develops rapidly with high mortality. Haemorrhagic septicaemia mostly occurs in developing countries and has potential to emerge elsewhere in the world. The diagnosis of haemorrhagic septicaemia currently requires recognition of compatible gross or

There are many hypotheses regarding influences on the early hominin biogeographic spread into Eurasia; among them is increased meat-eating. Dmanisi in Georgia is one of the rare Early Pleistocene sites in Eurasia, and here we present primary information and analysis of the medium and large mammal taphonomy, contributing information about site formation and the hominins' interaction with the fauna. Nearly 85% of the specimens come from the B1 stratum. Relative abundances of mammal families demonstrate some bias toward carnivores, especially Canis borjgali, and diverse Felidae species. Bones dis

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a severe, usually fatal, acute systemic disease syndrome of certain domestic and wild ruminants caused by members of the family Gammaherpesvirinae. Two distinct but closely related viruses cause clinically indistinguishable syndromes: one that is indigenous to the widebeest and the other that apparently is indigenous to domestic sheep. Neither the pathogenesis nor the epidemiology of sheep-associated MCF (SA-MCF) is understood, primarily because of a lack of adequate detection methods for the etiologic agent or antibody against it. No acceptably documented is
