The influence of drink temperature on thermoregulatory responses during prolonged exercise in a moderate environment.

Nine males cycled at 53% (s = 2) of their peak oxygen uptake (VO(2peak)) for 90 min (dry bulb temperature: 25.4 degrees C, s = 0.2; relative humidity: 61%, s = 3). One litre of flavoured water at 10 (cold), 37 (warm) or 50 degrees C (hot) was ingested 30 - 40 min into exercise. Immediately after the 90 min of exercise, participants cycled at 95%VO(2peak) to exhaustion to assess exercise capacity. Rectal and mean skin temperatures and heart rate were recorded. The gradient of rise in rectal temperature was influenced (P < 0.01) by drink temperature. Mean skin temperature was highest in the hot

An index of the environmental thermal load imposed on exercising horses and riders by hot weather conditions.

There is a need to determine objectively the environmental heat load imposed on horses competing to an international standard in 3-day-events in environments where there is likely to be a high level of radiation added to high ambient temperatures and relative humidity; the presently used FEI 'Comfort Index' is severely limited in its applicability. It is proposed that the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) Index be used. This index was originally established for man exercising strenuously under harsh climatic conditions with high solar radiation levels. It may be defined as: WBGT = 0.7Twb + 0.3

Diurnal variation of thermal resistance in rats.

Effects of photoperiod on heat resistance were studied in 88 rats by observing their survival times in a hot environment (42.5 degrees C). Prior to the experiments individual rats were exposed to a given heat (42.5 degrees C) at a definite time of day and a "predicted survival time" in a given heat in individual rats was obtained. Rats were then divided into eight groups (with nine rats in each group) so as to ensure intergroup homogeneity regarding their predicted survival time and were exposed to heat at different times of day (every 3 h) until they were exhausted. It was found that the heat

Inhibition of type 4 cAMP-phosphodiesterases (PDE4s) in mice induces hypothermia via effects on behavioral and central autonomous thermoregulation.

Inhibitors of Type 4 cAMP-phosphodiesterases (PDE4s) exert a number of promising therapeutic benefits, including potent anti-inflammatory, memory- and cognition-enhancing, metabolic, and antineoplastic effects. We report here that treatment with a number of distinct PDE4 inhibitors, including Rolipram, Piclamilast, Roflumilast and RS25344, but not treatment with the PDE3-selective inhibitor Cilostamide, induces a rapid (10-30 min), substantial (-5 °C) and long-lasting (up to 5 h) decrease in core body temperature of C57BL/6 mice; thus, identifying a critical role of PDE4 also in the regulation

Evaluating physiological strain during cold exposure using a new cold strain index.

A cold strain index (CSI) based on core (T(core)) and mean skin temperatures (T(sk)) and capable of indicating cold strain in real time and analyzing existing databases has been developed. This index rates cold strain on a universal scale of 0-10 and is as follows: CSI = 6.67(T(core t) - T(core 0)). (35 - T(core 0))(-1) + 3.33(T(sk (t)) - T(sk 0)). (20 - T(sk 0))(-1), where T(core 0) and T(sk 0) are initial measurements and T(core t) and T(sk t) are simultaneous measurements taken at any time t; when T(core t) > T(core 0), then T(core t) - T(core 0) = 0. CSI was applied to three databases. The

Ambient temperature leads to differential immune strategies in the subterranean rodent Ctenomys talarum.

Animal thermoregulation may have significant costs and compete directly or indirectly with other energetically demanding processes, such as immune function. Although the subterranean environment is characterized by thermally stable conditions, small changes in ambient temperature could be critical in shaping immunity. However, little is known about the effects of ambient temperature, in naturally varying ranges, on immunity of wild species. Therefore, to evaluate the effect of short-term exposure to ambient temperatures on energy metabolism and body temperature during the acute phase immune re

Influence of acute heat mitigation strategies on core temperature, heart rate and aerobic performance in females: A systematic literature review.

This review examined the effect of acute heat mitigation strategies on physiological strain and exercise performance in females exercising in the heat. Three databases were searched for original research with an acute heat mitigation (intervention) and control strategy in active females and reporting core temperature, heart rate and/or aerobic exercise performance/capacity with ≥ 24°C wet bulb globe temperature. Hedges' g effect sizes were calculated to evaluate outcomes. Thirteen studies (n = 118) were included. Most studies that applied an acute heat mitigation strategy to females did not re

Physiological mechanisms associated with the use of a passive heat intervention: positive implications for soccer substitutes.

PURPOSE: Soccer substitutes are exposed to periods of limited activity before entering match-play, likely negating benefits of active warm-ups. This study aimed to determine the effects of using a passive heat intervention following a pre-match, and half-time warm-up, on muscle and core temperature in soccer players during ambient (18 °C) and cold (2 °C) conditions. METHODS: On four occasions, 8 male players, completed a pre-match warm-up, followed by 45 min of rest. Following this, participants completed a half-time re-warm-up followed by an additional 45 min of rest, simulating a full match

Hypoxia alters the thermogenic response to cold in adult homeothermic and heterothermic rodents.

KEY POINTS: For small mammals living in a cold, hypoxic environment, supplying enough O2 to sustain thermogenesis can be challenging. While heterothermic mammals are generally more tolerant of cold and hypoxia than homeothermic mammals, how they regulate O2 supply and demand during progressive cooling in hypoxia is largely unknown. We show that as ambient temperature is reduced in hypoxia, body temperature falls in both homeotherms and heterotherms. In the homeothermic rat, a decrease in O2 consumption rate and lung O2 extraction accompany this fall in body temperature, despite a relative hype

Inhibiting effect of artificial cryptorchidism on spermatogenesis.

In order to provide a contraceptive method in man, an attempt at inhibition of spermatogenesis was made by means of thermogenesis induced by artificial cryptorchidism. This experimental protocol consists of pushing up the testicles into the inguinal canal and keeping them there, each day during waking hours, by means of an adapted athletic supporter. Fourteen men volunteered for this protocol during a 6- to 12-month period. They all had a normal semen analysis before starting the experiment. The total sperm count, the sperm count per milliliter, the motility, the motile sperm count per millili

Regional differences in body temperature in hypothermic and rewarmed young calves.

One- to 7-day-old Holstein bull calves were anesthetized and cold-stressed until their core body temperature (CBT; colonic) was lowered by 10 C. The calves were then rewarmed in warm water, by heat pads or heat lamps, or allowed to recover naturally (unassisted). Temperatures of peripheral tissues, muscles, and the body core were recorded. The time required to lower the CBT of the cold-stressed calves was 168 +/- 11.7 minutes (mean +/- SE). Cold exposure caused a linear decrease in blood, colonic, rectal, and oral temperatures, whereas temperature decreases in the thigh and pectoral muscles, d

Endotoxin and prostaglandin fever of newborn guinea pigs at different ambient temperatures.

At an ambient temperature (Ta) of 30 degrees C, injection of 0.2 micrograms E. coli endotoxin into the lateral cerebral ventricle (icv) of three-day-old or younger guinea pigs was followed by a biphasic febrile rise in body temperature (Tc) and oxygen consumption (VO2), interrupted by a transient fall. At Ta 20 degrees C the change in Tc and VO2 was still biphasic, the first rise was similar as that seen at Ta 30 degrees C, but the subsequent fall was more pronounced. Thus, Tc became lower than before endotoxin and remained below the pre-injection level during and after the second rise. Inject

Body surface rewarming in fully and partially hypothermic king penguins.

Penguins face a major thermal transition when returning to land in a hypothermic state after a foraging trip. Uninsulated appendages (flippers and feet) could provide flexible heat exchange during subsequent rewarming. Here, we tested the hypothesis that peripheral vasodilation could be delayed during this recovery stage. To this end, we designed an experiment to examine patterns of surface rewarming in fully hypothermic (the cloaca and peripheral regions (here; flippers, feet and the breast) < 37 °C) and partially hypothermic (cloaca at normothermia ≥ 37 °C, but periphery at hypothermia) king

Thermoregulation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the major adult-onset motor neuron disease, and is clinically, pathologically, and genetically associated with frontotemporal dementia, the second cause of dementia in the elderly. Here, we review the evidence linking thermoregulation and ALS. Indeed, while ALS is not classically associated with defective thermoregulatory function, its progression severely affects key brain regions controlling body temperature and impacts multiple sensors and effectors of this homeostatic function. Furthermore, animal models of ALS display disturbed thermoregulation as a

Molecular characterization of circannual interval timing in the preoptic area and anteroventral periventricular nucleus in the Djungarian hamster (Phodopus sungorus).

Most temperate animals exhibit seasonal rhythms in reproductive physiology and behaviour. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) cells in the preoptic area (POA) and kisspeptin (Kiss) cells in the anteroventral periventricular (AvPv) nucleus are critical for timing photoperiod-induced changes in seasonal reproduction. In response to prolonged exposure to photoperiod cues, many rodents exhibit endogenously generated programmed changes in physiology that reflect a circannual timing mechanism. Here we used transcriptome sequencing coupled with measurements of surface body temperature and testes ma

Oscillatory dynamics within fronto-insular-parietal networks integrate thermosensory signals into body ownership.

Cutaneous thermosensory signals are linked to survival and homeostatic regulation, yet their relationship with higher order cognitive functions remains poorly understood. Emerging evidence suggests that skin temperature is associated with body ownership-the sense that a body and its parts belong to oneself-but the oscillatory basis of this relationship in healthy individuals is unknown. We combined a multisensory illusion paradigm with thermal imaging and electroencephalography to investigate the oscillatory correlates of skin-temperature changes during experimentally induced changes in body o

Dysfunction of thermoregulation contributes to the generation of hyperthermia-induced seizures.

Febrile seizures (FS) are generally defined as seizures taking place during fever. Long-term prognosis, including development of epilepsy and malformation of cognitive function, has been demonstrated after infantile FS. However, the mechanism that triggers seizures in hyperthermic environment is still unclear. We here found that the body temperature of rat pups that experienced experimental FS was markedly decreased (∼28°C) after they were removed from the hyperthermic environment. Both the seizure generation and the temperature drop after seizure attack were abolished by either pre-treatment

Metabolic responses at sub-thermoneutral temperatures in captive common waxbills (Estrilda astrild).

Understanding how invasive species cope with novel thermal environments can help clarify the physiological mechanisms supporting establishment and range expansion. Here, we measured resting metabolic rate in captive-bred common waxbills (Estrilda astrild), a successful Afrotropical invader, across ambient temperatures ranging from 11 to 35 °C. We also assessed individual metabolic reaction norms, repeatability, core body temperature and thermal conductance to determine whether birds followed classical thermoregulatory expectations or showed evidence of reduced energetic costs at low temperatur

A Wearable System for Remote Wrist Skin Temperature Monitoring to Assess Skin Thermal Response to Extreme Cold: A Case Study.

Skin temperature measurement is a complex issue. Skin tissue is one of the main thermoregulatory organs and takes major responsibility for heat exchange in the organism. Accurate skin temperature measurement may contribute to better estimation of deep core temperature, which is why enhancing possibilities of skin temperature measurement is considered substantial. However, the real value of the skin temperature can be influenced by many biological and non-biological factors. Some of the external factors such as extensive wind or extreme ambient temperature may significantly influence the raw va
