A pH-dependent auto-agglutinin with anti-P specificity.

An agglutinin with apparent anti-P specificity, reactive only at pH values below 6.0, was found in the plasma of a healthy female blood donor. It is postulated that this agglutinin recognizes latent receptors revealed by structural alterations to red blood cell membranes which occur in an acid environment.

Oral enzyme combination therapy reduces systemic inflammation, urinary CTXII and pain in knee osteoarthritis: a proof-of-mechanism, randomised, crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Oral enzyme combination (OEC) therapy with bromelain, trypsin and rutoside reduces pain and improves function in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Here, we investigated several potential biological mechanisms underlying the clinical effects of OEC therapy in patients with established knee OA with respect to innate immunity, systemic inflammation and cartilage turnover (EudraCT 2020-003154-80, NCT05038410). METHODS: Patients (age ≥40 years, body mass index (BMI) ≤35 kg/m2) with symptomatic knee OA were randomised to either placebo or OEC, administered 2×3 tablets/day, for 8 w

Assessment of adequacy of pancreatic enzyme replacement with the multiple-phase carbon-14-triolein test.

The carbon-14-triolein absorption test was used to investigate fat absorption and its response to pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy in 10 men with pancreatic steatorrhoea. Absorption was increased in all, from 1,14 +/- 1,2% of the dose per hour (group mean +/- SD) to 2,85 +/- 2,33% (P less than 0,01) by the simultaneous administration of 8 tablets of enteric-coated pancreatic enzymes (Nutrizym; Merck). In patients with normal or high gastric acid secretion, neutralization of gastric acid with 30 ml magnesium trisilicate had no effect on absorption while the addition of an extract of gastri

Platelet-Rich Plasma Fibrin Glue Dressing Combined with a Novel Repairing Gel for Healing Recalcitrant Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Findings from an Exploratory Randomized Pilot Trial.

PURPOSE: Recalcitrant diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) remain difficult to heal and impose substantial clinical and economic burdens. This exploratory, four-arm, parallel-group randomized pilot trial aimed to evaluate whether combining platelet-rich plasma-fibrin glue (PRP‑FG) with a novel repairing gel enhances healing outcomes in DFUs compared with standard care and single‑agent therapies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, twenty patients with DFUs unresponsive to at least four weeks of standard treatment were randomized using computer-generated blocks with allocation concealment to receive P

Dietary pineapple peel powder supplementation enhances resistance against Aeromonas veronii in Labeo rohita fingerlings.

This study investigated the immunomodulatory effects of dietary pineapple peel powder (PPP) supplementation in Labeo rohita fingerlings (15.2 ± 0.3 g) through a 60 d feeding trial followed by a 15 d Aeromonas veronii infection challenge. Processing 1 kg of pineapple fruit generates approximately 30-35% waste, primarily peels, containing bioactive compounds including bromelain enzyme. Using a completely randomized design, 300 fingerlings were distributed into 5 treatment groups in triplicate: Control (0%), T1 (2%), T2 (4%), T3 (6%), and T4 (8%) PPP supplementation. Immunological, haematological

A Case of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome With Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome: The Role of Unconventional Therapies.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) type 2 is a chronic pain condition that develops after a nerve injury and is characterized by severe pain, allodynia, and functional impairments. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome hypermobility type (hEDS) and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) are connective tissue and inflammatory disorders that may contribute to the development of CRPS. Despite various treatment approaches, effective pain management remains a challenge, particularly in complex cases involving underlying genetic predispositions. We report the case of a 42-year-old female with a history of CRPS ty

Reaction of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies with other pathogens, vaccines, and food antigens.

It has been shown that SARS-CoV-2 shares homology and cross-reacts with vaccines, other viruses, common bacteria and many human tissues. We were inspired by these findings, firstly, to investigate the reaction of SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibody with different pathogens and vaccines, particularly DTaP. Additionally, since our earlier studies have shown immune reactivity by antibodies made against pathogens and autoantigens towards different food antigens, we also studied cross-reaction between SARS-CoV-2 and common foods. For this, we reacted monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies against SARS-CoV

Multiple pollen sensitization: a molecular approach to the diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Sensitization to multiple pollen species is a frequent diagnostic event. Several allergenic molecules with a high level of homology have been identified in divergent pollen families and named panallergens. METHODS: We sought to define the criteria to evaluate the prevalence of the multiple pollen sensitization, to identify specific markers of this condition, and to correlate them with the underlying allergic disease. Patients presenting an allergic respiratory disease underwent skin testing with 23 pollens. Patients fulfilling predefined selection criteria were grouped and classif

Immune-Boosting and Antiviral Effects of Antioxidants in COVID-19 Pneumonia: A Therapeutic Perspective.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has profoundly impacted global health, with pneumonia emerging as a major complication in severe cases. The pathogenesis of COVID-19 is marked by the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and an excessive inflammatory response, resulting in oxidative stress and significant tissue damage, particularly in the respiratory system. Antioxidants have garnered considerable attention for their potential role in managing COVID-19 pneumonia by mitigating oxidative stress and modulating immune responses

Treatment of COVID-19 patients with quercetin: a prospective, single center, randomized, controlled trial.

Scientific research continues on new preventive and therapeutic strategies against severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). So far, there is no proven curative treatment, and a valid alternative therapeutic approach needs to be developed. This study is designed to evaluate the effect of quercetin in COVID-19 treatment. This was a single-centre, prospective randomized controlled cohort study. Routine care versus QCB (quercetin, vitamin C, bromelain) supplementation was compared between 429 patients with at least one chronic disease and moderate-to-severe respiratory symptom

Herbal anti-inflammatory agents for skin disease.

Herbs have been used in clinical medicine for thousands of years. However, it is only in recent times that we have been able to employ scientific methods to prove the efficacy of many of these herbs and to give us a better understanding of their mechanisms of action. This article will focus on the use of herbs in various dermatological conditions characterized by inflammation and pruritus. Topical preparations of many of these herbs are more commonplace in Europe. However, their availability is increasing in the US. As this is occurring we are witnessing a growing marriage between alternative

Enzyme-Based Anti-Inflammatory Therapeutics for Inflammatory Diseases.

Inflammation is a multifaceted biological response of the immune system against various harmful stimuli, including pathogens (such as bacteria and viruses), cellular damage, toxins, and natural/synthetic irritants. This protective mechanism is essential for eliminating the cause of injury, removing damaged cells, and initiating the repair process. While inflammation is a fundamental component of the body's defense and healing process, its dysregulation can lead to pathological consequences, contributing to various acute and chronic diseases, such as autoimmune disorders, cancer, metabolic synd

Medicinal Plants as Efficacious Agents for Diabetic Foot Ulcers: A Systematic Review of Clinical Studies.

A diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a chronic, nonhealing wound that occurs in approximately 15% to 25% of patients with diabetes, and amputation is necessary in approximately 5% to 24% of these patients. Medicinal plants have demonstrated promising wound healing activities in animal models of DFUs as well as in clinical studies. These plants, which are described as medicinal in different regions of the world, are not considered to be standard medicinal treatments in Western medicine at this time. Some medicinal products, such as bromelain-an herbal protease currently used for enzymatic debridement

Natural rubber latex and hymenoptera venoms share ImmunoglobinE-epitopes accounting for cross-reactive carbohydrate determinants.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data on the prevalence and risk factors of latex sensitization have suggested a significant association between latex sensitization and the presence of one or more positive skin prick test responses to aeroallergens, food allergens and to one or more insect venoms. Xylose and core 3-fucose are typical complex glycans in plants and are foreign to mammals. Plant N-glycans and insect N-glycans may cross-react in humans. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to investigate whether there are cross-reactive IgE-binding structures in natural rubber latex (NRL) and hymenopte

Autoimmune effects of hexachlorobenzene in the rat.

We investigated whether autoimmune disregulation underlies the formerly reported induction of IgM hypergammaglobulinemia and lymphoid organ enlargement by hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in rats. To this end blood, liver, and lymphoid organs were collected from male Wistar rats after feeding a semisynthetic diet containing 0, 500, or 1000 mg HCB/kg for 3 weeks. Sera prepared from the blood were analyzed for total and (auto)antigen-specific antibody levels by ELISA, organs were weighed, and spleens were further investigated morphologically using immunohistochemically stained cryosections.
