Improving Cervical Precancer Surveillance: Validity of Claims-Based Prediction Models in ICD-9 and ICD-10 Eras.

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) impact on cervical precancer (cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grades 2+ [CIN2+]) is observable sooner than impact on cancer. Biopsy-confirmed CIN2+ is not included in most US cancer registries. Billing codes could provide surrogate metrics; however, the International Classification of Diseases, ninth (ICD-9) to tenth (ICD-10) transition disrupts trends. We built, validated, and compared claims-based models to identify CIN2+ events in both ICD eras. METHODS: A database of Davidson County (Nashville), Tennessee, pathology-confirmed CIN2+ from th

A systematic approach to community of practice evaluation using the value creation framework.

Communities of Practice (CoPs) are widely used to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange across disciplines. However, systematic evaluations of them remain limited due to the dynamic nature of CoPs and the lack of tested methodologies. In this manuscript, we present the evaluation of a CoP conducted by pairing the Value Creation Framework with guidance developed by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Through qualitative analysis using a structured coding framework, we examine participants' experiences in the CoP and assess how the CoP generated value for its members, the barriers that

Understanding and simulating border ownership centered segmentation.

Border ownership is a critical component of biological vision systems, enabling object segmentation and figure-ground organization. Understanding border ownership-centered segmentation is essential for advancing vision neuroscience and computer vision. In our prior work, "Border Ownership, Category Selectivity, and Beyond" (Chen et al., 2022)6, we introduced a channel-based representation for coding border ownership and category selectivity. Building on this foundation, this paper addresses the remaining challenges in border ownership-centered segmentation. We explore binocular disparity repre

Midbrain sensitivity to auditory motion studied with dichotic sweeps of broadband noise.

Many neurons in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC) show sensitivity to interaural time differences (ITDs), which is thought to be relayed from the brainstem. However, studies with interaural phase modulation of pure tones showed that IC neurons have a sensitivity to changes in ITD that is not present at the level of the brainstem. This sensitivity has been interpreted as a form of sensitivity to motion. A new type of stimulus is used here to study the sensitivity of IC neurons to dynamic changes in ITD, in which broad- or narrowband stimuli are swept through a range of ITDs wi

Towards a microRNA-based Johne's disease diagnostic predictive system: Preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Johne's disease, caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), is a chronic enteritis that adversely affects welfare and productivity in cattle. Screening and subsequent removal of affected animals is a common approach for disease management, but efforts are hindered by low diagnostic sensitivity. Expression levels of small non-coding RNA molecules involved in gene regulation (microRNAs), which may be altered during mycobacterial infection, may present an alternative diagnostic method. METHODS: The expression levels of 24 microRNAs affected by mycobacterial infe

An integrative perspective on the role of touch in the development of intersubjectivity.

Touch concerns a fundamental component of sociality. In this review, we examine the hypothesis that somatomotor development constitutes a crucial psychophysiological element in the ontogeny of intersubjectivity. An interdisciplinary perspective is provided on how the communication channel of touch contributes to the sense of self and extends to the social self. During gestation, the transformation of random movements into organized sequences of actions with sensory consequences parallels the development of the brain's functional architecture. Brain subsystems shaped by the coordinated activity

Emergency communication systems effectiveness in an airport environment.

Since 2010 there have been at least 25 reported events that necessitated the evacuation of at least one full terminal of an airport. To facilitate the evacuation of the large number of passengers required, it is critical that airports install a properly designed emergency communications system (ECS). This paper discusses the key factors driving the design and operation of alarm systems in airport passenger terminal buildings. The technical requirements for passenger notification per the applicable codes and standards are discussed as well as the proper strategy for messaging and facilitating p

Grammatical evolution-based design of nucleotic analogs for SARS-CoV-2's replication-transcription complex.

In the context of de novo structure based drug design, the rise of in silico tools shows a promising strategy to search new molecules to address several diseases. In this work, a program with a Grammatical Evolution approach, lead to the design of 4 new molecules that can inhibit the SARS-CoV-2 RNA dependent RNA polymerase. Those were build by an exploration of a chemical space, defined previously by a pharmacophore model, with several bioisosteric fragments arrange by the grammatical evolution code into 1D molecular strings, which were then converted into 3D molecules and evaluated against th

A methodological framework for developing bioinformatics databases: a case study on the Boesenbergia rotunda genome database.

Comprehensive, well-structured databases are critical for storing, integrating, and analyzing genomics data. This manuscript presents a hybrid methodology combining the traditional Database Development Life Cycle (DDLC) with agile principles to build a comprehensive genome database for Boesenbergia rotunda, known as Fingerroot ginger. Boesenbergia rotunda (L.) Mansf., also recognized as Fingerroot ginger or Chinese keys, is a perennial herb from the Zingiberaceae family in the order Zingiberales. Fingerroot ginger is widely used in Asian cuisine, especially the rhizome, and is recognized for i

A generalized difference-in-differences estimator for stepped-wedge cluster-randomized trials.

Staggered treatment adoption arises in the evaluation of policy impact and implementation in many settings, including both randomized stepped-wedge trials (SWTs) and non-randomized quasi-experiments with panel data. In both settings, getting an interpretable, unbiased effect estimate requires careful consideration of the target estimand and possible treatment effect heterogeneities. This paper proposes a novel non-parametric approach for interpretable estimation in SWTs. By constructing an estimator using weighted averages of two-by-two difference-in-differences comparisons as building blocks,

Trust in the patient-provider relationship: an arts-based research film exploring trust in adolescents and young adults with HIV.

Arts-based research offers an innovative method for exploring complex emotions such as trust by capturing subjective experiences that traditional methods may overlook. Adolescents and young adults with HIV (AYA-WH) are less likely than older adults to achieve viral suppression and remain engaged in care, with only 40-60% retained one year post-transition to adult services. Patient-provider trust plays a critical role in care engagement and adherence, yet little is known about how AYA-WH experience and interpret trust. Using a cross-sectional mixed-methods approach guided by Caring Science, Car

Assessing the Utility of Audio Foundation Models for Heart and Respiratory Sound Analysis.

Pre-trained deep learning models, known as foundation models, have become essential building blocks in machine learning domains such as natural language processing and image domains. This trend has extended to respiratory and heart sound models, which have demonstrated effectiveness as off-the-shelf feature extractors. However, their evaluation benchmarking has been limited, resulting in incompatibility with state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance, thus hindering proof of their effectiveness. This study investigates the practical effectiveness of off-the-shelf audio foundation models by comparing

The theta-gamma code in predictive processing and mnemonic updating.

Predictive processing has become a leading theory about how the brain works. Yet, it remains an open question how predictive processes are realized in the brain. Here I discuss theta-gamma coupling as one potential neural mechanism for prediction and model updating. Building on Lisman and colleagues SOCRATIC model, theta-gamma coupling has been associated with phase precession and learning phenomena in medio-temporal lobe of rodents, where it completes and retains a sequence of places or items (i.e., predictive models). These sequences may be updated upon prediction errors (i.e., model updatin

TagCLIP: Improving Discrimination Ability of Zero-Shot Semantic Segmentation.

Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) has recently shown great promise in pixel-level zero-shot learning tasks. However, existing approaches utilizing CLIP's text and patch embeddings to generate semantic masks often misidentify input pixels from unseen classes, leading to confusion between novel classes and semantically similar ones. In this work, we propose a novel approach, TagCLIP (Trusty-aware guided CLIP), to address this issue. We disentangle the ill-posed optimization problem into two parallel processes: semantic matching performed individually and reliability judgment for imp

FaissMolLib: An efficient and easy deployable tool for ligand-based virtual screening.

Virtual screening-based molecular similarity and fingerprint are crucial in drug design, target prediction, and ADMET prediction, aiding in identifying potential hits and optimizing lead compounds. However, challenges such as lack of comprehensive open-source molecular fingerprint databases and efficient search methods for virtual screening are prevalent. To address these issues, we introduce FaissMolLib, an open-source virtual screening tool that integrates 2.8 million compounds from ChEMBL and ZINC databases. Notably, FaissMolLib employs the highly efficient Faiss search algorithm, outperfor

Electrochemical miRNA-34a-based biosensor for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common dementia type and a leading cause of death and disability in the elderly. Diagnosis is expensive and invasive, urging the development of new, affordable, and less invasive diagnostic tools. The identification of changes in the expression of non-coding RNAs prompts the development of diagnostic tools to detect disease-specific blood biomarkers. Building on this idea, this work reports a novel electrochemical microRNA (miRNA) biosensor for the diagnosis of AD, based on carbon screen-printed electrodes (C-SPEs) modified with two gold nanostructures and

Fast and Low-GPU-memory abdomen CT organ segmentation: The FLARE challenge.

Automatic segmentation of abdominal organs in CT scans plays an important role in clinical practice. However, most existing benchmarks and datasets only focus on segmentation accuracy, while the model efficiency and its accuracy on the testing cases from different medical centers have not been evaluated. To comprehensively benchmark abdominal organ segmentation methods, we organized the first Fast and Low GPU memory Abdominal oRgan sEgmentation (FLARE) challenge, where the segmentation methods were encouraged to achieve high accuracy on the testing cases from different medical centers, fast in

The Role of Circulating Biomarkers in Peripheral Arterial Disease.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) of the lower extremities is a chronic illness predominantly of atherosclerotic aetiology, associated to traditional cardiovascular (CV) risk factors. It is one of the most prevalent CV conditions worldwide in subjects >65 years, estimated to increase greatly with the aging of the population, becoming a severe socioeconomic problem in the future. The narrowing and thrombotic occlusion of the lower limb arteries impairs the walking function as the disease progresses, increasing the risk of CV events (myocardial infarction and stroke), amputation and death. The compelling case for low-violence-risk preclusion in American prison policy.

This article recommends the development of broad policies of preclusion regarding the use of incarceration for offenders who are highly unlikely to commit a violent crime in the future. The proposal builds on the new Model Penal Code: Sentencing's provision on the limited utilitarian purposes of incarceration. Such low-violence-risk-preclusion strategies (LVRPs) would stand on the most powerful predictive capabilities of today's risk assessment technology. If implemented properly, there is reason to believe that substantial drops in prison rates could be realized in most states. The preclusion
