Schistosomiasis in pre-school-age children and their mothers in Chikhwawa district, Malawi with notes on characterization of schistosomes and snails.

BACKGROUND: To complement ongoing schistosomiasis control within national control programmes (NCPs) that administer praziquantel to school-age children, assessing the risk and extent of schistosomiasis in pre-school-age children (PSAC) is important. METHODS: In June 2012, schistosomiasis in Chikhwawa district, Malawi was assessed across 12 villages examining pre-school-age children (PSAC) and their mothers by serological and parasitological diagnosis, as supplemented with urine-antigen and questionnaire-interview methods. Urinary tract morbidity was inferred by haematuria and albuminuria assa

Schistosomiasis and intestinal parasites in rural villages in southwest Nigeria: an indication for expanded programme on drug distribution and integrated control programme in Nigeria.

A cross sectional survey of schistosomiasis, intestinal parasite infections and pattern of schistosomiasis transmission was undertaken in four rural villages around the Erinle dam, Nigeria. The prevalence of Schistosoma haematobium ranged from 10% to 60%. 30% of infected school children excreted over 50 eggs/10 ml urine and high rates of haematuria, proteinuria, leucocyturia and nitrites in urine were observed in infected children and the villagers. Prevalence of infection with S. mansoni ranged from 11.4% to 36.8%. Intensity of infection based on geometric mean eggs/gram of faeces ranged betw

Factors affecting the intensity of reinfection with Schistosoma haematobium following treatment with praziquantel.

Infection with Schistosoma haematobium was studied in a rural community of approximately 500 persons in eastern Zimbabwe. The overall prevalence of infection, as determined by urine egg counts, was 40.1%, and of heavy infections (greater than or equal to 50 eggs/10 ml urine) was 11.0%. The prevalence of both heavy and all infections was highest in the 8 to 10-year-old age class. During 1987-88 data were obtained from 102 individuals on intensity of reinfection 14 weeks after treatment with praziquantel, the efficacy of treatment having been determined after 4 weeks. The water contact made by t

[Epidemiologic and radiologic study of urinary bilharziosis in a focus at the Barombi Lakes (Mémé Department), Cameroon].

A recent epidemiological and radiological study of urinary schistosomiasis in the Barombi lake foci (South West Cameroon) shows that the intensity of the disease is very high, 76% and 50% in Barombi Kotto and Barombi Mbo respectively, when compared to the level observed by DUKE and MOORE during a five year control period, from 1970 to 1975, respectively 6.9% and 2.4% in Barombi Kotto and Barombi Mbo. The endemicity is not influenced by age or sex. On the average, the parasitic load is highest in the 5-15 years age group. Bulinus camerunensis and B. rohlfsi are the known intermediary hosts of t

Changing pattern of schistosomiasis in Egypt 1935--79.

A village in the Nile surveyed for schistosomiasis by J. A. Scott in 1935 was surveyed again in 1979. The same number of people as in the 1935 survey were randomly selected for investigation by the same parasitological techniques as those used by Scott. The prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni infection had increased from 3.2% to 73%, whereas S. haematobium infection, which had been very common in 1935 (74%), had almost disappeared (2.2%). In the local district hospital since 1972 the percentage of urine specimens found to contain S. haematobium ova has dropped from 30 to 9%, while the percentage

Epidemiological dynamics and associated risk factors of S. haematobium in humans and its snail vectors in Nigeria: a meta-analysis (1983-2018).

Schistosoma haematobium, a major pathogen of urogenital schistosomiasis, has been reported to be affecting an estimated 30 million people in Nigeria. Current national estimates of S. haematobium and its cercariae, in humans and snail vectors respectively, are lacking in Nigeria, hence systematic meta-analyses were conducted to understand the disease dynamics in the endemic country over a period of 35 years based on publications from five databases (AJOL, Ovid MEDLINE, Google Scholar, PubMed and Web of Science). The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRIMSA) che

The detection of Schistosoma bovis in livestock on Pemba Island, Zanzibar: A preliminary study.

Schistosoma bovis is a parasitic trematode of ungulates transmitted by freshwater snails in Sub-Saharan Africa causing bovine intestinal schistosomiasis that leads to chronic morbidity and significant agricultural economic losses. The recently reported occurrence of Bulinus globosus infected with S. bovis for the first time on Pemba Island (Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania) is a cause of concern for livestock/wildlife health and complicates the surveillance of Schistosoma haematobium. To confirm that local cattle are infected with S. bovis, fresh faecal samples were collected from six adu

Amphistome infections in domestic and wild ruminants in East and Southern Africa: A review.

In this article, the main amphistome species infecting domestic and wild ruminants in East and Southern Africa, their snail intermediate hosts and epidemiological features are reviewed and discussed. Twenty-six amphistome species belonging to nine genera from three families occur in domestic and wild ruminants in the region under review and over 70% of them belong to the genera Calicophoron, Carmyerius and Cotylophoron. Of the amphistome species, 76.9% are shared between domestic and wild ruminant hosts - an important observation when considering the different options for control. Seven freshw

Epidemiological studies of Schistosoma mattheei infections in cattle in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe.

During the period between January 1999 and December 2000, the distribution and seasonal patterns of Schistosoma mattheei infections in cattle in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe were determined through monthly coprological examination. Faecal samples of cattle were collected from 12 and nine dipping sites in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas, respectively. Patterns of distribution and seasonal fluctuations of the intermediate host-snail populations and the climatic factors influencing the distribution were also determined at monthly intervals from Novem

Ecological studies on the intermediate host snails and the relevance to schistosomiasis control.

A detailed knowledge of distribution patterns of schistosome intermediate hosts and their population dynamics and factors affecting these patterns will provide useful information about the possibilities and desirability of conducting snail control measures in various transmission situations. On the basis of various case studies the association between the occurrence of human water contacts and the presence of schistosome intermediate hosts or infections in the intermediate hosts is illustrated. Other parameters affecting snail distribution patterns and density fluctuations are discussed. It is

Endemicity and seasonality of transmission of human schistosomiasis in Ile-Ife, south western Nigeria.

Endemicity and seasonality of transmission of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium were studied in Ile-Ife, south western Nigeria. Transmission of S. mansoni was demonstrated throughout the year in a man-made dam, whereas transmission of S. haematobium in a stream only occurred in the dry season. This difference in the transmission patterns should be considered when incorporating community-based focal plant molluscicide application in the integrated strategy for the control of schistosomiasis morbidity.

Worms, wells and water in western Madagascar.

This study of schistosomiasis and intestinal parasites was carried out on 496 children in the Firaisana (District) of Ankilivalo in Western Madagascar. The prevalence of these parasites was determined and data collected on nutrition, agriculture and the use of water in order to gain an understanding of the transmission and effects of these parasites. Recommendations for their control are suggested. In two schools within the area of a major irrigation scheme the prevalence of urinary schistosomiasis was 69%, and 50% suffer from at least one intestinal worm. In a school outside the main irrigati

Snail immunity to schistosomes: insights from omics studies.

Schistosomiasis is a serious public health concern, with transmission facilitated by a small number of freshwater snail intermediate host species. Infection outcomes vary greatly across the primary vector genera, Biomphalaria (for Schistosoma mansoni), Bulinus (for S. haematobium), and Oncomelania (for S. japonicum), even within species, ranging from full resistance to high compatibility. Omics methods have altered this field by correlating host genotype, baseline immunological status, and time-resolved responses to whether invading miracidia are eliminated or develop sporocysts. Evidence from

[Focusing of Schistosoma haematobium transmission in irrigated perimeters of the Niger valley (Niger): importance of malacological factors].

BACKGROUND: Currently, the control of urinary schistosomiasis is mostly based on mass treatment. Characterization of Schistosoma haematobium transmission could lead to adding new methods to the control strategy. METHODS: We carried out malacological and cercariometrical surveys in irrigated perimeters of the Niger River valley. A semi-monthly follow-up was performed in three main sites of human-water contact in a village located at the border of the irrigated perimeter. Bulinids were collected during 20 min; after identification based on the shell morphology, their parasites were characterize
