Fifth carpometacarpal arthritis management: A comparative cadaver study of two arthrodesis methods.

Osteoarthritis of the fifth carpometacarpal (CMC) joint is an uncommon yet challenging complication following fracture-dislocation injuries. This condition results in chronic pain, restricted motion, and impaired hand function, significantly limiting the patient's ability to perform daily activities. Surgical interventions for post-traumatic osteoarthritis of the fifth CMC joint include arthrodesis and arthroplasty, with the Dubert technique combining elements of both approaches. This study aimed to compare the effects of Dubert arthrodesis and traditional fifth metacarpal (MC)-hamate arthrode

Ophthalmic artery branches and adjacent nerves observed on sectioned images of cadaver.

The ophthalmic artery plays a vital role in supplying the eyeball and neighboring structures, and is associated with various clinical conditions. In this study, high-resolution cadaver-sectioned images were used to provide an intricate morphology of the ophthalmic artery and its branches, along with the oculomotor, trochlear, ophthalmic, and abducens nerves. This study presents a combination of schematics and cadaver-sectioned images, allowing for a clear representation of intricate anatomic structures. This study elucidated the spatial relationships among the ophthalmic artery, cranial nerves

A cadaver study evaluating intraluminal anomalies of the left common iliac vein.

OBJECTIVE: Intraluminal anomalies within the left common iliac vein, characteristic of iliac vein compression syndrome, are thought to result from compression by and pulsation of the overlying right common iliac artery. This cadaver study was designed to expand on the existing literature by surveying and photographing these spurs in addition to exploring whether certain factors, inherent to the cadaver, are associated with spur presence. METHODS: Dissection to expose the aorta, inferior vena cava, and common iliac arteries and veins was performed in 51 cadavers. The spinal level at which the

Dislodgment of continuous suprascapular nerve block catheters after physiotherapy: A cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Continuous peripheral nerve blocks are commonly used for pain management. However, the incidence of catheter dislodgement or migration is unclear, and may be underestimated and underreported. Our objective was to assess suprascapular catheter tip positioning before and after routine simulated shoulder physiotherapy manipulation in an anatomical cadaver model. METHOD: Eight ultrasound-guided continuous suprascapular nerve block catheters were placed in cryopreserved fresh cadavers. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed the location of the catheter tip after injection of 1 ml of contra

Urethrovaginal Septum: A Histological Study on a Cadaver and Its Clinical Significance.

The academic literature concerning the tissue bridging the anterior vaginal wall and the posterior urethral wall, the urethrovaginal septum, is lacking and inconsistent, not only when compared to non-reproductive anatomy but also when compared to male reproductive anatomy. This knowledge gap must be addressed, given the implication of this tissue in numerous female reproductive pathologies and functions, including pelvic organ prolapse, intercourse and orgasm, urethral strictures, vaginal cancers, and stress urinary incontinence. This study seeks to characterize the histological composition of

Nitinol actuated soft structures towards transnasal drug delivery: a pilot cadaver study.

Sudden hearing loss can be treated noninvasively by administering drugs to the middle ear (≈1 ml) via the eustachian tube. The nasopharyngeal cavity requires high dexterity manipulation as it is restricted by the nasal vestibule, and precise drug delivery through the small cavity can allow previously unreachable areas to be reconsidered for localized delivery. Nitinol has shape memory capabilities and can be used for distal actuation accessed from small lumen and a tortuous path. The drug delivery device (DDD) is a soft and needle-sized (2 mm) and comprises of Nitinol, ribbon spring, and a dru

Kinetic dysfunction of the wrist with chronic scapholunate dissociation. A cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Most laboratory studies investigating scapholunate dissociations are based on normal cadaver arms with serially sectioned ligaments. It is assumed that the kinetic behavior of a ligament-sectioned wrist is similar to a scapholunate dissociation. We tested five cadaver wrists with real injuries. The goal of this research was to evaluate the biomechanical behavior of scapholunate advanced collapse wrists compared to an experimental group with simulated injuries. METHODS: Using a magnetic 6-degree of freedom motion tracking device, changes in scaphoid alignment induced by isometric l

Intramedullary screw fixation for metacarpal shaft fractures: a biomechanical human cadaver study.

Intramedullary cannulated compression screws have been introduced for the fixation of unstable metacarpal fractures. In the present study, this technique was compared with dorsal compression plating to evaluate its biomechanical performance in stabilizing metacarpal shaft fractures. In a first set of experiments, the biomechanical characteristics of the screws were analysed in an artificial bone model. In subsequent experiments, midshaft osteotomies were performed in human cadaver metacarpals, followed by plating or intramedullary screw osteosynthesis. The metacarpals were tested to failure in

Diffused light attenuation at 664 nm for PDT in salted cadaver brain.

BACKGROUND: We investigated light attenuation at 664 nm, which is the excitation wavelength of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using talaporfin sodium, in a salted cadaver brain. Estimation of therapeutic lesions is important to ensure the effectiveness and safety of brain tumor PDT. Previously reported optical properties of the human brain vary widely. In this study, we measured the light attenuation in brain tissue using a practical method. We employed a salted cadaver brain, in which the mechanical and optical properties can be maintained as close as possible to those under operative conditions.

Development of a human cadaver model for training in laparoscopic donor nephrectomy.

BACKGROUND: The organ procurement network recommends a surgeon record 15 cases as surgeon or assistant for laparoscopic donor nephrectomies (LDN) prior to independent practice. The literature suggests that the learning curve for improved perioperative and patient outcomes is closer to 35 cases. In this article, we describe our development of a model utilizing fresh tissue and objective, quantifiable endpoints to document surgical progress, and efficiency in each of the major steps involved in LDN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Phase I of model development focused on the modifications necessary to ma

Ultrasound-Guided Glossopharyngeal Nerve Block: A Cadaver and a Volunteer Sonoanatomy Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Glossopharyngeal nerve (GPN) blocks are usually performed by topical, intraoral, or peristyloid approaches, which carry significant complication risks due to the proximity of important neurovascular structures. This study presents a proof of concept for a new ultrasound (US)-guided technique, which would block the GPN distally, in the parapharyngeal space, away from the immediate vicinity of high-risk collateral structures. METHODS: Five cadaver heads were dissected, and the location of the GPN was explored bilaterally. In 40 healthy volunteers (20 men and 20 women;

Avoiding radial nerve palsy in proximal radius shaft plating - a cadaver study.

BACKGROUND: Opinions vary concerning the position of forearm rotation during detachment of the supinator in radial nerve palsy Henry's and Thompson's approaches. PURPOSE: To define the optimal forearm position for a safe detachment of the supinator during these approaches and to clarify their close relationship to the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN). METHODS: The study sample comprised 90 upper extremities of 45 human adult cadavers, embalmed using Thiel's method. After detection of the radial nerve in the interval between the brachialis and brachioradialis, its pathway was traced to the

The Filum Terminale: A Cadaver Study of Anatomy, Histology, and Elastic Properties.

BACKGROUND: The filum terminale is a fibrous band, consisting of the filum terminale internum (FTI), connecting the conus medullaris (CM) with the dural sac (DS), and the filum terminale externum (FTE), connecting the DS with the coccyx. Despite its importance in tethered cord syndrome, published anatomic and physiologic data on the filum terminale remain scarce. We describe 1) the dimensions and position of the FTI and FTE; 2) the histology of the FTI-DS-FTE transition zone; and 3) the extensibility and elastic properties of the FTI and the CM. METHODS: Anatomic measurements were performed o
