Neural plasticity after pre-linguistic injury to the arcuate and superior longitudinal fasciculi.

We describe the case of girl who was born prematurely and diagnosed periventricular leukomalacia, a condition characterized by severe injury to the white matter tracts primarily surrounding the ventricles. At 12 years of age, we obtained diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data on this child as part of a research protocol. Multiple analyses of DTI data, including tractography, showed that the left and right arcuate and superior longitudinal fasciculi were missing in the child though all other major white matter tracts were present. Standardized psychometric tests at age 12 years revealed that despi

The Contribution of Parent Lexical Diversity and Grammatical Complexity to Later Language Outcomes in Mandarin-Speaking Children With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: The study examined the relative contribution of parent lexical diversity and grammatical complexity at different time points to subsequent language outcomes in Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants (CIs). METHOD: Participants were 25 Mandarin-speaking children who received cochlear implantation before 30 months of age. At 1 and 2 years after CI activation, we collected language samples that involved the child playing with the parent for 30 min. The parent's number of different words (NDW) and mean length of utterance (MLU) were computed from the free play for each time po

Fracture-dislocation of the shoulder in a child: case report.

This is a case of an 11-year old girl with a delayed diagnosis of a shoulder fracture-dislocation. Shoulder dislocations are rare, and proximal humerus fractures are uncommon. A fracture-dislocation in a child is, to our knowledge, as yet unrepresented in the English-language literature. The child's injury resolved without recurrence.

Explicit Grammatical Intervention for Developmental Language Disorder: Three Approaches.

Purpose This article summarizes the shared principles and evidence underpinning methods employed in the three sentence-level (syntactic) grammatical intervention approaches developed by the authors. We discuss associated clinical resources and map a way forward for clinically useful research in this area. Method We provide an overview of the principles and perspectives that are common across our three syntactic intervention approaches: MetaTaal (Zwitserlood, 2015; Zwitserlood, Wijnen, et al., 2015), the SHAPE CODING system (Ebbels, 2007; Ebbels et al., 2014, 2007), and Complex Sentence Interve

Psycholinguistic assessment of developmental speech disorders.

Although various psycholinguistic models of speech and language processing have been developed to account for levels of breakdown in developmental speech disorders, it is not obvious how they are to be applied in clinical practice. At the same time, speech and language therapists have routinely been using a wide range of procedures, including published tests, that tap different levels of phonological processing in the child. When analysed and classified appropriately, these procedures can form the basis for a comprehensive psycholinguistic investigation of developmental speech disorders. The a

Questions Matter: Investigating the Role of Caregiver Interactions in Children With Down Syndrome.

PURPOSE: Past research on interactions between parents and their children with Down syndrome (DS) has focused on mothers as the communication partner, despite fathers also frequently interacting with their children. This exploratory study examined mother and father question-asking behaviors during dyadic interactions with their children with DS and included preliminary observations of children's responsiveness to capture the bidirectional nature of interaction. METHOD: Participants included 15 children with DS (Mage = 39.67 months) and their biological parents. Each participant was administer

The ESSENCE in child psychiatry: Early Symptomatic Syndromes Eliciting Neurodevelopmental Clinical Examinations.

Co-existence of disorders--including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, tic disorder, developmental coordination disorder, and autism spectrum disorder--and sharing of symptoms across disorders (sometimes referred to as comorbidity) is the rule rather than the exception in child psychiatry and developmental medicine. The acronym ESSENCE refers to Early Symptomatic Syndromes Eliciting Neurodevelopmental Clinical Examinations. It is a term I have coined to refer to the reality of children (and their parents) presenting in clinical settings with impairing chi

Cognitive abilities and language comprehension in preschool children with perinatal brain lesion.

Perinatal brain lesion is a risk factor for development, making parents of such children particularly worried about consequences it may have on the child's cognitive and language development. Although literature findings on the outcome of perinatal brain lesion are inconsistent, most of the studies have found a positive general outcome, but also subtle deficits that affect the child's academic success. Since language comprehension and cognitive abilities influence learning abilities at school, we wanted to know how six-year olds who were selected based on pathological ultrasonographical findin

The role of the speech-language pathologist with hearing-impaired infants.

The educators of the deaf, the audiologists, and other similar professional groups appear to have reasonably clearly delineated roles to play in the management of the hearing-impaired child. Not so with the speech-language pathologist. This paper specifies such a role and offers a model for the delivery of speech-language pathology services to the hearing-impaired infant.

Efficacy of a Self-Directed Video-Based Caregiver-Implemented Language Programme.

INTRODUCTION: Caregiver-implemented language programmes are effective for alleviating early language difficulties. This study examined the efficacy of a self-directed video-based caregiver-implement language programme in Chinese families. METHOD: This study consisted of two stages. In stage 1, 31 caregiver-child dyads (typically developing children) completed the training programme (group 1) in the form of six video-based training modules. In stage 2, 28 caregiver-child dyads (children with language difficulties) receiving active speech therapy were randomly assigned to the training (group 2)

The role of social determinants of health in the developing injured brain.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We provide a comprehensive review of the evidence on the influence social determinants of health play in the most common causes of perinatal brain injury. This area remains under-investigated, and the evidence can be difficult to navigate. RECENT FINDINGS: There is strong emerging evidence on factors such as the influence of maternal education, and in particular a cognitively stimulating home environment, on the language development of preterm infants. The role of the home environment on children following hypoxic brain injury and congenital heart disease is less well studi

Education Research: How Child Neurologists Counsel About Reproductive Health and Epilepsy: Gaps in Accuracy and Clarity in an Educational Needs Assessment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) 2017 Women With Epilepsy Quality Measure advises all neurologists, including child neurologists, to counsel all 12- to 44-year-old female patients with epilepsy annually about at least 2 of 3 following topics: folic acid supplementation, interactions between antiseizure medications (ASMs) and contraception, and the effect of ASMs on pregnancy and/or fetal or child development. We hypothesized that child neurologists do not consistently conduct clear, factually accurate, and guideline-concordant counseling in this area. Therefor

Australian families of deaf and hard of hearing children: Are they using sign?

BACKGROUND: Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children may experience communication delays, irrespective of early intervention and technology. Australian Sign Language (Auslan) is one approach in early intervention to address language delays. Current prevalence of Auslan use among Australian families with DHH children is unknown. AIMS: The first aim was to determine the proportion of families enrolled in an Australian statewide hearing loss databank who use Auslan with their DHH child. The second aim was to explore the relationships between indicators of child hearing loss (bilateral or unilater

Does maternal genetic liability to folate deficiency influence the risk of antiseizure medication-associated language impairment and autistic traits in children of women with epilepsy?

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to antiseizure medication (ASM) may lead to low plasma folate concentrations and is associated with impaired neurodevelopment. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether maternal genetic liability to folate deficiency interacts with ASM-associated risk of language impairment and autistic traits in children of women with epilepsy. METHODS: We included children of women with and without epilepsy and with available genetic data enrolled in the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study. Information on ASM use, folic acid supplement use and dose, dietary folate intake, ch

Validation of the Manchester spoken language development scale (MSLDS).

Introduction: Standardized outcome measures are importantfor accurately monitoring the language development of pre-lingually deaf children receiving auditory implants. Current commonly used outcome measures are time-consuming,limiting the practicality of regular testing. To address these limitations, the Manchester Spoken Language Development Scale (MSLDS) was developed as a quick and easily applicable interim measurement. This is an 11-point scale designed to provide a streamlined overview of a child's expressive language development. This study describes the MSLDS, evaluates its ease of use

Within- and Cross-Language Relations Between Phonological Memory, Vocabulary, and Grammar in Bilingual Children.

PURPOSE: This study investigated within-language and between-language associations between phonological memory, vocabulary, and grammar in French-English (n = 43) and Spanish-English (n = 25) bilingual children at 30, 36, and 48 months. It was predicted that phonological memory would display both within-language and between-language relations to language development and that these relations would be stronger at the youngest age. METHOD: Bilingual children participated in free-play sessions in both of their languages at each age, from which vocabulary and grammatical information (number of dif
