A novel gammaherpesvirus in a large flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus) with blepharitis.

A novel gammaherpesvirus was identified in a large flying fox (Pteropus vampyrus) with conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and meibomianitis by nested polymerase chain reaction and sequencing. Polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing of 472 base pairs of the DNA-dependent DNA polymerase gene were used to identify a novel herpesvirus. Bayesian and maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses indicated that the virus is a member of the genus Percavirus in the subfamily Gammaherpesvirinae. Additional research is needed regarding the association of this virus with conjunctivitis and other ocula

Detection of European bat lyssavirus 2 (EBLV-2) in a Daubenton's bat (Myotis daubentonii) from Magdeburg, Germany.

In Europe bat rabies in Daubenton's bats (Myotisdaubentonii) and in Pond bats (Myotis dasycneme) caused by the European bat lyssavirus 2 (EBLV-2) has been confirmed in less than 20 cases to date. Here we report the second encounter of this virus species in Germany. A Daubenton's bat found grounded in the zoological garden in Magdeburg died shortly after. In the frame of a retrospective study the bat carcass was eventually transferred to the national reference laboratory for rabies at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute for rabies diagnosis. Lyssavirus was isolated and characterized as EBLV-2.

First encounter of European bat lyssavirus type 2 (EBLV-2) in a bat in Finland.

In Finland, rabies in bats was suspected for the first time in 1985 when a bat researcher, who had multiple bat bites, died in Helsinki. The virus isolated from the researcher proved to be antigenically related to rabies viruses previously detected in German bats. Later, the virus was typed as EBLV-2b. Despite an epidemiological study in bats 1986 and subsequent rabies surveillance, rabies in bats was not detected in Finland until the first case in a Daubenton's bat (Myotis daubentonii) was confirmed in August 2009. The bat was paralysed, occasionally crying, and biting when approached; it sub

Versatility and stereotypy of free-tailed bat songs.

In mammals, complex songs are uncommon and few studies have examined song composition or the order of elements in songs, particularly with respect to regional and individual variation. In this study we examine how syllables and phrases are ordered and combined, ie "syntax", of the song of Tadarida brasiliensis, the Brazilian free-tailed bat. Specifically, we test whether phrase and song composition differ among individuals and between two regions, we determine variability across renditions within individuals, and test whether phrases are randomly ordered and combined. We report three major fin

First report of rabies in vampire bats (Desmodus rotundus) in an urban area, Ubatuba, São Paulo state, Brazil.

The purpose of this report is to record the first case of a hematophagous bat (Desmodus rotundus) infected with rabies virus in an urban area in Brazil. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first such case in Latin America. After discovering a bat in his garden at 10 o'clock in the morning, a resident of Ubatuba municipality asked the Zoonosis Control Center team to visit his home. The animal was caught alive on the same day and sent to the Pasteur Institute laboratory, where it was identified as a Desmodus rotundus specimen. Standard tests for rabies diagnosis were carried out (direct immun

Detection of Australian bat lyssavirus using a fluorogenic probe.

BACKGROUND: Australian bat lyssavirus (ABLV) has been transmitted to humans following a scratch or bite from an infected bat in two cases. Following a scratch or bite to a person, the bat is usually submitted for testing and diagnosis is made using a direct fluorescent antibody test on a brain smear. A nested RT-PCR assay has also been utilised to confirm diagnosis. If positive for lyssavirus, post-exposure prophylaxis is administered. OBJECTIVES: The TaqMan assay was developed to improve the diagnosis of ABLV infection, following problems encountered with the generation of spurious PCR produ

Ultrastructure of the unusual accessory submandibular gland in the fringe-lipped bat, Trachops cirrhosus.

BACKGROUND: The phyllostomid fringe-lipped bat, Trachops cirrhosus, is sui generis (in a family of ca. 138 species) in that it subsists in part on tropical frogs. These amphibians frequently possess highly toxic integument. We examined the salivary glands of this bat to determine if these glands could be the source of protective factors that permit consumption of seemingly unsavory prey. The parotid and principal salivary glands of this bat are similar to homologous glands in other phyllostomids, but the accessory submandibular gland is unique. METHODS: The accessory submandibular glands of l

Ultrastructure of the parotid salivary glands in seven species of fruit bats in the genus Artibeus.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies, we determined that the submandibular glands of five species of Neotropical fruit bats in the genus Artibeus had seromucous granules in their demilune cells with substructures that varied interspecifically in accordance with systematic relationships. Moreover, the striated ducts in these frugivores exhibited structural modifications that apparently are related to the consumption of a diet rich in potassium, but deficient in sodium. We now turn our attention to the parotid gland in a large number of species in this genus to determine if it follows the same struct

Growth, and tooth growth/wear curves derived from an asymptotic function: y = alpha + beta rho x.

From the asymptotic function, y = alpha + beta rho x, a computer program to describe growth was developed, using a series of iterative fittings to provide a progressively improved regression line and value for rho (the growth factor). The function was further developed to describe the entire process of tooth development from eruption and growth through to wear, incorporating both growth and wear factors in one relationship, y = alpha 1 + beta 1 rho x + gamma x. A 4 X 4 covariance matrix was evolved to suit this and a computer program developed to execute the curve fitting.

Genomic and Clinical Analysis of a Fatal Human Lyssavirus irkut Case: Evidence for a Natural Focus in the Russian Far East.

In this report, we document and analyze a case in which the Irkut virus (IRKV) (Mononegavirales: Rhabdoviridae) caused a fatal human case following a bat bite in June 2021. Unfortunately, the available data did not permit a detailed taxonomic classification of the carrier bat (Chiroptera). The event occurred in the southwestern part of the Sikhote-Alin mountain region (Russian Far East) covered by the Ussuri taiga forest. The symptoms of the illness began with the following: fever; pronounced psychomotor and motor agitation; tremor of the lower jaw and tongue; aphasia; dyslexia; and dysphagia.

Risk of Viral Infectious Diseases from Live Bats, Primates, Rodents and Carnivores for Sale in Indonesian Wildlife Markets.

Southeast Asia is considered a global hotspot of emerging zoonotic diseases. There, wildlife is commonly traded under poor sanitary conditions in open markets; these markets have been considered 'the perfect storm' for zoonotic disease transmission. We assessed the potential of wildlife trade in spreading viral diseases by quantifying the number of wild animals of four mammalian orders (Rodentia, Chiroptera, Carnivora and Primates) on sale in 14 Indonesian wildlife markets and identifying zoonotic viruses potentially hosted by these animals. We constructed a network analysis to visualize the a

A comparative morphological and histological study of the gastrointestinal tract of four insectivorous bat species: Asellia tridens, Chaerephon pumilus, Nycteris thebaica, Rhinopoma hardwickii.

Various studies address the morphology of the gastrointestinal tracts (GITs) of insectivorous bat species. However, detailed morphometric studies including mucin histochemistry are scarce. This study compares various GIT measurements as well as the quantification of intestinal mucin secreting cells in four insectivorous bat species representing four different families of Chiroptera. Alcian blue/Periodic acid Schiff's stain was used to differentiate between acid and neutral mucin-secreting cells while the Aldehyde fuchsin/Alcian blue stain further differentiated between two acid mucins, namely

Divergent host adaptation in Marburg virus: a hypothesis-generating framework for prioritizing non-traditional reservoirs.

BACKGROUND: Although Rousettus aegyptiacus is the primary natural reservoir of Marburg virus (MARV), recent atypical outbreaks and viral genomic diversification suggest a highly complex host-pathogen ecology. Here, we systematically evaluated the molecular homologies between MARV and diverse mammalian taxa to identify putative reservoir hosts and guide targeted surveillance. METHODS: A multi-dimensional molecular characterization of the Marburg virus (MARV) genome was performed using an integrative suite of computational approaches. Distant sequence homology was interrogated via BLAST in conj

Functional microanatomy of nasal turbinals in bats.

Nasal turbinals are scrolled or folded internal nasal bones. In bats, prior work suggests turbinal anatomy is simplified in association with laryngeal echolocation (especially nasal emitting bats) and in association with insectivory. Using histology and iodine-enhanced micro-computed tomography, we examined a sample of 83 adult bats (54 species) to test these hypotheses more broadly across Chiroptera. Compared to bats that lack the capacity for laryngeal echolocation (i.e., Pteropodidae), all echolocating bats lack some of the more peripheral turbinals (e.g., interturbinals), and many lack at

Histoplasma capsulatum in wild mammals from Ecuador.

BACKGROUND: Histoplasma capsulatum is a globally distributed dimorphic fungal pathogen endemic to the Americas, Africa, and Asia. It causes histoplasmosis, a disease acquired via inhalation of spores from contaminated environments. It thrives in nitrogen-rich soils and is disseminated by avian and chiropteran reservoirs. Histoplasma capsulatum has been found in wild mammals such as rodents, marsupials, felines, and xenarthrans, suggesting diverse reservoirs that may influence its maintenance and transmission in endemic areas. This study aimed to detect H. capsulatum in tissues of wild small ma
