Attendance in a Neonatal Follow-Up Program before and in the Time of COVID-19 Pandemic: A Mixed Prospective-Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Attendance to neonatal follow-up programs presents a significant factor associated with positive long-term outcomes of high-risk infants. Strategies to maximize participation benefit not only future interventions' effectiveness but also healthcare systems and society. While a number of studies have focused on attrition or loss to follow-up, no studies have focused on the contributive risk factors to abstaining from neonatal follow-up programs specifically during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aims to reveal the main factors linked to non-compliance in a neonatal follow-up progra

A National Profile of Functional Limitations Among Asian Indians, Chinese, and Filipinos.

OBJECTIVES: Asian Americans are the fastest-growing minority group in the United States, yet little is known about their functional mobility. To overcome such a gap, this study examined the association between demographic/economic characteristics and functional limitations for middle-aged and older Asian Indians, Chinese, and Filipinos. METHOD: This study utilized microdata from the National Health Interview Survey pooled sample (2010-2016 IPUMS NHIS with a sample size of 6,767 Asians). Logit regressions were used to examine factors associated with functional limitations. Measures include age

Structural determinants of depressive symptoms among refugees and host communities in South Sudan: evidence from explainable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms in displacement settings are often framed as consequences of refugee status, which can obscure the shared structural conditions emphasized in the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) framework that shape mental health for refugees and host communities and limit the identification of practical intervention targets. This study examines the relative contribution of health, socioeconomic, protection, and contextual factors to depressive symptom severity among adults living in displacement-affected settings in South Sudan. METHODS: We analyzed nationally representat

Psychological dynamics and adaptive processes of negative online social interactions among university students: a qualitative study in higher education digital environments.

OBJECTIVE: As digital platforms increasingly shape university students' learning, social interactions, and identity construction, negative online social interactions have become important experiences in connected digital environments. Existing research has mainly examined specific negative online behaviors, such as cyberbullying and online exclusion, and their psychological consequences, while paying less attention to how students interpret and adapt to negative interactions embedded in everyday digital life. Drawing on a cyberpsychological perspective, this study explores the dynamic psycholo

Data Resource Profile: The Age-It Family Demography Survey (Age-It FDS).

INTRODUCTION: Italy has recently witnessed profound transformations in family dynamics, including delayed union formation, rising cohabitation, increasing relationship instability, and postponed parenthood. These shifts have occurred alongside persistently lowest-low fertility rates and a growing use of medically assisted reproduction (MAR). Existing Italian datasets do not simultaneously capture these new family dynamics, nor do they address other emerging themes such as online dating patterns, MAR experiences and trajectories, and the forward-looking narratives through which individuals inte

Exploring the barriers and facilities migrants face in accessing COVID-19 vaccines in Malaysia: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Malaysia provided COVID-19 vaccines for all residents, regardless of citizenship status. However, the extent of vaccine accessibility for migrant populations remains unclear, given the complex healthcare barriers they face. This study explored the barriers migrants faced in accessing COVID-19 vaccines and the measures taken to facilitate their access. METHODS: This qualitative study, conducted between April 2022 and February 2023, involved 32 purposively selected key informants from non-governmental organisations (7), international organisations (2), labour unions (2), healthcare

Association between education and allostatic load with risk of cancer mortality among Hispanic women.

PURPOSE: Cancer remains the leading cause of death among Hispanics in the US. While social determinants of health, such as educational attainment, have been linked to negative health outcomes, their biological mechanisms remain poorly understood. We evaluated the association between educational attainment and allostatic load (AL), a measure of chronic physiologic stress, with risk of cancer mortality in Hispanic women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis among 5637 Hispanic women in NHANES from 1988 to 2010 with fol

Compliance with COVID-19 government guidance and rules by disabled people and people from minoritised ethnic groups: Qualitative findings from the CICADA study.

Within the 2020/21 CICADA (Coronavirus Intersectionalities: Chronic Conditions or Disabilities and Migrants and other Ethnic minorities) study, we explored full, partial or noncompliance with government COVID-19 infection-containment measures by people from minoritised ethnic groups with a disabling health condition or impairment. We used an assets-based intersectional approach and purposive sampling, included non-disabled and White British comparators, and trained community co-researchers to help us reach undocumented migrants and asylum seekers. We undertook 271 semi-structured qualitative i

Individual and familial factors associated with mRNA COVID-19 vaccine uptake in pregnancy: A large-scale registry-based linkage study.

The association between maternal COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy and factors such as high risk for severe COVID-19, pre-existing asthma, prior adverse reproductive history, or paternal COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy, remains unclear. The aim of this study is two-fold: (i) to describe uptake of COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy by maternal risk for severe COVID-19 and asthma, and (ii) to comprehensively examine individual and familial factors associated with vaccine uptake during pregnancy in Norway. Based on nation-wide registry-linkage data in Norway, we included 101,659 deliveries w

Do clinical and communication skills scores on credentialing exams predict potentially inappropriate antibiotic prescribing?

BACKGROUND: There is considerable variation among physicians in inappropriate antibiotic prescribing, which is hypothesized to be attributable to diagnostic uncertainty and ineffective communication. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether clinical and communication skills are associated with antibiotic prescribing for upper respiratory infections and sinusitis. METHODS: A cohort study of 2,526 international medical graduates and 48,394 U.S. Medicare patients diagnosed by study physicians with an upper respiratory infection or sinusitis between July 2014 and November 2015 was cond

HIV care cascade for women living with HIV in the Greater Toronto Area versus the rest of Ontario and Canada.

BACKGROUND: The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is home to 39% of Canada's population living with HIV. To identify gaps in access and engagement in care and treatment, we assessed the care cascade of women living with HIV (WLWH) in the GTA versus the rest of Ontario and Canada (in this case: Quebec and British Columbia). METHODS: We analyzed 2013-2015 self-reported baseline data from the Canadian HIV Women's Sexual and Reproductive Health Cohort Study for six care cascade stages: linked to care, retained in care, initiated antiretroviral therapy (ART), currently on ART, ART adherence (≥90%), and u

Association between human papillomavirus vaccine status and sexually transmitted infection outcomes among females aged 18-35 with a history of sexual activity in the United States: A population survey-based cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: Current human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine coverage in the United States (in 2019, 66-70%), remains below the Healthy People 2020 coverage goal of 80%. HPV vaccine misinformation, including parental concerns of sexual risk-compensation influence vaccine uptake. We examined the association between HPV vaccination and sexually transmitted infection (STI) outcomes. METHODS: Of the 20,146 participants from 2013 to 2014 and 2015-2016 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 1050 females aged 18-35 with a history of sexual activity had complete case data. Recovery Attitudes and Recovery Practices Have an Impact on Psychosocial Outreach Interventions in Community Mental Health Care.

The most recent mental health policies implemented in the province of Québec, Canada, have emphasized recovery-oriented mental health practice. Part of this impetus has resulted in significant importance placed on the development of community mental health models in the public health system. The forms of community mental health programs have evolved considerably over time in Québec but are largely inspired by the evidence-based model of Assertive Community Treatment (ACT). However, if mental health policies and programs in Québec are now emphasizing the role of community mental health, it is a

Assistive technology policy: a position paper from the first global research, innovation, and education on assistive technology (GREAT) summit.

Increased awareness, interest and use of assistive technology (AT) presents substantial opportunities for many citizens to become, or continue being, meaningful participants in society. However, there is a significant shortfall between the need for and provision of AT, and this is patterned by a range of social, demographic and structural factors. To seize the opportunity that assistive technology offers, regional, national and sub-national assistive technology policies are urgently required. This paper was developed for and through discussion at the Global Research, Innovation and Education o
