Hydroclimatic extremes indexed by SPI and malaria case dynamics in Oyo State, Nigeria: evidence for lagged, site-specific effects.

Climate change significantly impacts human health through extreme weather events such as heat waves and meteorological droughts, which increase vulnerability to various malaria diseases. This study examined drought-temperature influences on malaria incidence in Saki and Sepeteri, Oyo State, Southwest Nigeria, using monthly climate and health data from 2013 to 2023. Drought conditions were characterized using standardized precipitation indices (SPI-1, SPI-3, and SPI-12), and associations with malaria were analyzed using regression models accounting for seasonality and temporal lags. Malaria tra

Impact of prior and projected climate change on US Lyme disease incidence.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in temperate zones and a growing public health threat in the United States (US). The life cycles of the tick vectors and spirochete pathogen are highly sensitive to climate, but determining the impact of climate change on Lyme disease burden has been challenging due to the complex ecology of the disease and the presence of multiple, interacting drivers of transmission. Here we incorporated 18 years of annual, county-level Lyme disease case data in a panel data statistical model to investigate prior effects of climate variation on disease inc

Unveiling the overlooked: Current and future distribution dynamics of kissing bugs and palm species linked to oral Chagas disease transmission.

Chagas disease, a neglected global health concern primarily transmitted through the bite and feces of kissing bugs, has garnered increasing attention due to recent outbreaks in northern Brazil, highlighting the role of oral transmission facilitated by the kissing bugs species Rhodnius robustus and Rhodnius pictipes. These vectors are associated with palm trees with large crowns, such as the maripa palm (Attalea maripa) and moriche palm (Mauritia flexuosa). In this study, we employ maximum entropy (MaxEnt) ecological niche models to analyze the spatial distribution of these vectors and palm spe

Climate risk or healthcare investment? Explaining oral health outcomes across European Union member states.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is a major public-health concern, but short-term population-level evidence linking annual climate variability to oral-health outcomes remains limited. This study evaluates within-country associations between temperature, extreme heat days, and three oral-health indicators across EU member states. METHODS: A longitudinal ecological panel analysis was conducted for the 27 EU member states from 2016 to 2023. Daily temperatures at each country centroid were obtained from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API and aggregated to annual mean temperature and days with maxi

Climate Factors, Air Pollutants, and Extreme Events Shape Influenza Risk in China: A Hospital-Based Case-Crossover and Machine-Learning Study.

Although the link between seasonal influenza and environment has been established, the heterogeneous impacts of climate extreme events with their interactions remain poorly understood. Based on 630,120 influenza-positive cases from hospitals in 335 Chinese cities (2005-2019), this case-crossover study adopted distributed lag nonlinear models to quantify exposure-lag-response relationships between environmental exposures and influenza, applied machine learning to rank dominant variables, and performed a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model using Beijing as proof of concept to test the forecastin

BES-Driven Machine Learning Prediction of Future Energy Loads in Broiler Housing Under SSP Climate Scenarios in South Korea.

The increasing frequency of heatwaves and high-temperature events due to climate change intensifies heat stress and mortality risk in broiler production and necessitates reassessment of facility design and energy management. This study developed a machine learning surrogate model trained on BES-simulated heating and cooling loads to estimate future energy load changes in broiler houses under SSP climate scenarios. Training data were constructed using simulated energy load results under different insulation conditions combined with historical meteorological data (2011-2020). Four machine learni

Aedes albopictus and Dengue Transmission Risk in France Over the 21st Century.

Climate change is dramatically affecting species distribution and phenology worldwide. Its impact on arthropod vectors, such as the Aedes albopictus mosquito, has important consequences for biting nuisance and arbovirus transmission risk. Here, we assess the impact of climate change on the presence and abundance of Ae. albopictus, as well as the risk of dengue transmission over France during the 21st century. We use a mechanistic model that we adjusted against records of recent autochthonous cases of dengue in France. We simulate climatic suitability indicators for mosquito establishment, the

Climate and dengue synchronization in southern Brazil: a municipal analysis with cross-state validation.

Dengue transmission is rapidly expanding beyond its historical tropical range, raising concerns about how climate change may alter the collective dynamics of epidemics. While most studies focus on transmission risk, much less is known about how climate affects the synchronization of outbreaks. In this work, we investigate dengue synchronization using epidemiological and climate data from 74 municipalities in the state of Paraná (southern Brazil) between 2010 and 2024. We quantify outbreak coherence using the event synchronization (ES) method. Our results reveal a transition from a low-transmis

Modeling of Human Rabies Cases in Brazil in Different Future Global Warming Scenarios.

Bat species have been observed to have the potential to expand their distribution in response to climate change, thereby influencing shifts in the spatial distribution and population dynamics of human rabies cases. In this study, we applied an ensemble niche modeling approach to project climatic suitability under different future global warming scenarios for human rabies cases in Brazil, and assessed the impact on the probability of emergence of new cases. We obtained notification records of human rabies cases in all Brazilian cities from January 2001 to August 2023, as reported by the State a

Climate-driven variation in mosquito density predicts the spatiotemporal dynamics of dengue.

Dengue is a climate-sensitive mosquito-borne disease with increasing geographic extent and human incidence. Although the climate-epidemic association and outbreak risks have been assessed using both statistical and mathematical models, local mosquito population dynamics have not been incorporated in a unified predictive framework. Here, we use mosquito surveillance data from 2005 to 2015 in China to integrate a generalized additive model of mosquito dynamics with a susceptible-infected-recovered (SIR) compartmental model of viral transmission to establish a predictive model linking climate and

Assessment of Climate-sensitive Infectious Diseases in the Federated States of Micronesia.

BACKGROUND: The health impacts of climate change are an issue of growing concern in the Pacific region. Prior to 2010, no formal, structured, evidence-based approach had been used to identify the most significant health risks posed by climate change in Pacific island countries. During 2010 and 2011, the World Health Organization supported the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) in performing a climate change and health vulnerability and adaptation assessment. This paper summarizes the priority climate-sensitive health risks in FSM, with a focus on diarrheal disease, its link with climatic var

Climate change and chronic kidney disease: A global analysis integrating the global burden of disease study 2021 with TerraClimate data.

BACKGROUND: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major and increasingly severe global health challenge. Recent evidence suggests that climate change may influence the burden of CKD. This study aimed to systematically assess the association between climate change and the age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of CKD. METHODS: Data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021, the TerraClimate database, and the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) were integrated to analyze associations between climate factors and CKD burden from 1990 to 2021. ASIRs were stratified by sex, age, so

Livestock ectoparasites: integrated management in a changing climate.

The prevalence of livestock ectoparasites is the result of a complex interaction of factors such as parasite and host abundance, host susceptibility, climate and, critically, farmer husbandry and intervention strategies, all of which change seasonally in space and time. Given the complexity of the interacting factors, the effects of any climate change on disease incidence are hard to predict, as accordingly are the optimal husbandry responses required to ameliorate any effects. Here cutaneous myiasis in sheep, by the blowfly Lucilia sericata in the United Kingdom, is used to highlight the impa

High mean water vapour pressure promotes the transmission of bacillary dysentery.

Bacillary dysentery is an infectious disease caused by Shigella dysenteriae, which has a seasonal distribution. External environmental factors, including climate, play a significant role in its transmission. This paper identifies climate-related risk factors and their role in bacillary dysentery transmission. Harbin, in northeast China, with a temperate climate, and Quzhou, in southern China, with a subtropical climate, are chosen as the study locations. The least absolute shrinkage and selectionator operator is applied to select relevant climate factors involved in the transmission of bacilla

Climate cycles and forecasts of cutaneous leishmaniasis, a nonstationary vector-borne disease.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the main emergent diseases in the Americas. As in other vector-transmitted diseases, its transmission is sensitive to the physical environment, but no study has addressed the nonstationary nature of such relationships or the interannual patterns of cycling of the disease. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We studied monthly data, spanning from 1991 to 2001, of CL incidence in Costa Rica using several approaches for nonstationary time series analysis in order to ensure robustness in the description of CL's cycles. Interannual cycles of the disease and the

A high-resolution daily climate time series for Germany (1981-2100).

The presented dataset is a high-resolution (1 × 1 km) daily climate time series for Germany covering the period 1981-2100 across a historic and nine CMIP5 climate change scenarios. The dataset is based on EURO-CORDEX projections from three Earth system models (ICHEC-EC-EARTH, MPI-M-ESM-LR, and NCC-NorESM1-M) under three representative concentration pathways (RCP 2.6, 4.5, and 8.5) and was bias-corrected against observational data from the German Weather Service (DWD). To reduce data volume in climate impact studies, the 355,944 1 × 1 km grid cells were aggregated into 10,000 spatial clusters b

The issue of climate change and the spread of tropical diseases in Europe and Italy: vector biology, disease transmission, genome-based monitoring and public health implications.

BACKGROUND: Climate change significantly influences the distribution and severity of tropical diseases. Rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and extreme weather events are transforming the habitats of vectors like mosquitoes and ticks, promoting their proliferation and geographic spread. These changes have facilitated the resurgence of diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya fever in previously unaffected areas, including parts of Europe and Italy. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: This review aims to explore the relationship between climate change and the spread of vector-bor
