Relapsing polychondritis (RPC) is a rare autoimmune rheumatic disorder that is traditionally classified as a systemic vasculitis. It is characterized by inflammation of cartilage, and typical presenting features include chondritis of the nasal bridge, auricular chondritis, ocular inflammation and involvement of the bronchial tree. Its rarity often leads to considerable delay in establishing a diagnosis and poses a significant management challenge to clinicians, as no conventional guidelines exist. This review summarizes the clinical features of RPC and provides guidance for rheumatologists on

The nail is an important skin appendage, but not many dermatologists are aware of the importance it receives outside our specialty. This article focuses on the nail in non-dermatological contexts. The nail is a keratinized matrix capable of continuous growth with the ability to incorporate various compounds within its structure. Therefore it can be used to monitor long-term consumption of drugs. It is also an excellent source of germ-line DNA for genetic analyses. With an increased undrstanding of nail physiology, there is now a better understanding of its connection to various pathologies as

Rationale and key points This article aims to help nurses to undertake the administration of enemas in a safe, effective and patient-centred manner, ensuring privacy and dignity. The administration of an enema is a common healthcare procedure, which can be used to deliver medication or aid bowel evacuation. ▶ The administration of an enema should be undertaken by a competent nurse. ▶ An enema is a liquid preparation inserted into the rectum. ▶ The nurse must explain the procedure to the patient and should assist the individual before, during and after the procedure. ▶ The nurse should document

BACKGROUND: For educators, an awareness of the impact of dyslexia on learners in the clinical workplace is vital: first, to be able to identify whether dyslexia may underlie certain traits and behaviours; and second, to be able to provide appropriate advice and support when dyslexia is identified. We reviewed the primary research evidence concerning the effects of dyslexia on clinicians (in or after training) in the workplace, and adaptive strategies ('workarounds') that are presently in use.
METHODS: A systematic search of literature was undertaken, followed by a narrative review of studies

BACKGROUND: Numerous methods are used for assessing the performance of surgical residents and students. Unfortunately, these same methods are often unsatisfactory. One technique that is gaining increased favor is the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). It is unclear what areas of evaluation might best be included in such an examination so as to optimize its value. Therefore, this study evaluated the opinions of an international body of surgical educators.
METHODS: A survey was distributed to 674 attending surgical educators; it asked respondents to select and rank the five most

INTRODUCTION: Clinical leadership is essential for patient safety and effective healthcare delivery. While leadership training is increasingly integrated into medical education, there is no consensus on how to define, teach, or evaluate these skills. This scoping review aimed to map the existing literature on medical clinical leadership training and identify gaps.
METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across five major databases. Eligible studies were original studies involving any interventions with the purpose of improving leadership skills of partic

BACKGROUND: Medical errors are a global concern and can compromise patient safety, with up to 80% of these errors directly linked to non-technical skills (NTS) failures. Traditional simulation using mannikins is resource-intensive, and virtual reality simulation (VR) has the potential to offer comparable outcomes with enhanced consistency and lowered resource requirements, but the effectiveness of VR to teach and enhance NTS has been underexplored.
AIM: This scoping review explores the existing literature on VR simulation as a method for teaching NTS in nursing to evaluate whether VR simulati

BACKGROUND AND NEED FOR INNOVATION: Early after-hours work represents a demanding transition for newly graduated doctors. Preparation is often fragmented, with limited attention to the integrated clinical, organisational, and supervisory demands of after-hours care, contributing to uncertainty that may affect both patient safety and professional development.
GOAL OF INNOVATION: PREPARE (PREParing for After-hours caRE) is an eight-week programme designed to support new graduates during their early postgraduate transition by enabling safe and confident participation in after-hours care.

BACKGROUND: Surgical education has shifted from the traditional Halstedian apprenticeship model toward incorporating simulation due to work-hour restrictions, increasing case complexity, and economic and liability pressures. Building on the success of the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery program for general surgery, the Fundamentals of Arthroscopic Surgery Training (FAST) program was developed to establish proficiency benchmarks for orthopedic trainees in basic arthroscopic skills.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to establish benchmarks for 5 FAST workstation modules.

The rising prevalence of mental health conditions (MHCs), coupled with increased public awareness, has led to greater help-seeking behaviours and heightened demands on nurses across healthcare settings. However, many general trained nurses report feeling inadequately prepared to care for individuals with MHCs due to limited training and clinical exposure. This lack of preparedness may result in compromised quality of care, reduced professional satisfaction and poorer recovery outcomes for clients. Existing systematic reviews have predominantly focused on psychosocial interventions for psychiat

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools have moved from novelty to measurable clinical impact in surgical practice. This review organizes the literature and practical guidance around five problems surgeons face: documentation burden, information overload, administrative accumulation, practice intelligence, and implementation. Each section follows a consistent structure: the problem, the evidence for addressing it, the type of tool that fits, and what failure looks like. The review draws on the best available evidence across study designs and addresses compliance, implementation, and measurement thr

Professional work in healthcare is increasingly disruptive, requiring professionals to be flexible and adaptable. Research on adaptive expertise and adaptive performance in healthcare has grown, and operationalisation and measurement of these concepts are crucial to meet professionals' evolving needs. This study provides an overview of measurement instruments for adaptive expertise and adaptive performance in (becoming) healthcare professionals, including an evaluation of their operationalisations and the amount of evidence supporting their quality. A scoping review was conducted, including an

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Simulation in surgical learning responds to ethical and pragmatic needs. Our purpose is to describe the effects on surgical skills of conducting a surgical training workshop on strabismus surgery with phantoms. Concern for patient safety makes it necessary to consider the use of simulators (virtual and three-dimensional physical) and animal models that allow the applicant to safely practice the procedures before facing a real case.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Realization of a workshop with previous theoretical content and real practice with phantoms designed to simulate stra
