Executive function in adolescents with obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The development of executive function continues in adolescence, a phase bringing independence to choose behaviors and environments. In parallel, compromised executive function may foster unhealthy eating behaviors and weight gain. However, obesity-related differences in executive function in adolescents remain poorly understood. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we investigated whether executive function is compromised in adolescent obesity and whether any executive function domain (inhibition, cognitive flexibility, working memory, decision-making, planning and verbal fluency) show

Individual Cognitive Remediation Therapy and Individual Emotion Skills Training for Anorexia Nervosa: A Case Series Study in a Paediatric Ward.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) often present cognitive rigidity, impaired decision-making, and difficulties processing emotions, all of which can impede engagement in treatment. The marked rise in paediatric hospitalisations for AN during the COVID-19 pandemic highlights the urgent need for brief, targeted interventions in inpatient settings. METHODS: This case series explored the feasibility and preliminary effects of combining Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) and Cognitive Remediation and Emotion Skills Training (CREST) for eight female adolescents (12-16 years) adm

Task-based interpretation flexibility predicts real-world emotion regulation variability.

Adapting to daily emotional challenges requires flexibility including flexible interpretations of ambiguous situations and dynamic use of emotion regulation (ER) strategies. Understanding whether flexibility is a domain-general capacity that spans both cognition and emotion regulation has important implications. This study investigated whether baseline interpretation flexibility predicts day-to-day ER variability and affective outcomes using a multimethod design. Participants completed a lab-based Interpretation Inflexibility Task (IIT) to assess flexibility in revising interpretations of ambi

Brains over brawn? Brown bears (Ursus arctos) demonstrate behavioral flexibility on a multi-access box and other tasks.

Bears (Family Ursidae) are relatively understudied, yet their social and foraging habits make them a useful taxon with which to test hypotheses about the evolution of cognition. Here, we provided seven brown bears (Ursus arctos) with five measures related to behavioral flexibility: a multi-access box (MAB), a detour cylinder task, a reversal learning task, an object manipulation "insertion" task, and a novel object task. Although our sample size was insufficient to draw strong conclusions, performance on these tasks appeared to correspond with each other such that bears that achieved multiple

Flexibility in abstract thought: Context-dependent representations of integer magnitude.

Negative numbers are challenging because they lack direct perceptual referents and require reasoning about magnitude in a relational, bi-directional manner. This review examines how people represent and use integer magnitude on the mental number line, a cognitive tool that learners initially use for positive numbers, focusing on the flexibility with which this tool is deployed across contexts. Synthesizing evidence from cognitive psychology, developmental science, and mathematics education, we evaluate three broad accounts: componential accounts, which treat sign and magnitude as separable sym

Switch costs reveal vocal-specific executive demands during flexible action selection in crows.

Crows and other corvids exhibit remarkable cognitive flexibility, exercising volitional control that allows them to select, initiate and withhold actions based on deliberate decisions rather than reflex. Among these behaviours, vocalizations are especially demanding, yet crows perform them with exceptional precision, paralleling core building blocks of human speech. Despite this, the executive mechanisms supporting intentional vocal control, and how they differ from those governing other voluntary actions, remain largely unknown. We trained carrion crows to produce either vocalizations or peck

Insight and executive functions in acquired brain injury: empirical evidence and theoretical frameworks.

Impaired self-awareness affects 30-50% of patients with moderate to severe acquired brain injury (ABI) and represents one of the most clinically consequential obstacles to effective rehabilitation. Despite substantial evidence that self-awareness and executive functions share neural substrates in prefrontal cortex, the mechanisms linking these two functions remain incompletely specified. This paper reviews the empirical evidence for the relationship between executive functions and insight in ABI, and evaluates four theoretical frameworks: the Cognitive Awareness Model, the Dynamic Comprehensiv

Remediating cognitive inflexibility in obsessive compulsive disorder and anorexia nervosa neither moderates nor mediates treatment effects: an exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and anorexia nervosa (AN) are conditions associated with poor cognitive flexibility, a factor considered to interfere with treatment, but research into the relationship between cognitive flexibility and treatment outcome is limited. This study explores whether baseline measures of cognitive flexibility predict outcomes in OCD and AN, evaluates whether changes in these measures contribute to treatment outcome, and evaluates the effectiveness of adjunctive cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) in improving cognitive flexibility. METHODS: This seconda

Misophonia symptom severity is linked to impaired flexibility and heightened rumination.

Misophonia is a disorder involving sensitivity to certain sounds and related stimuli. Here, we explore the relationship between misophonia and affective flexibility, which describes cognitive shifting abilities in the face of emotion-evoking stimuli. The secondary aim of this study is to test the potential association between misophonia and cognitive flexibility, building upon findings from previous research. The third objective is to examine the relationship between misophonia and rumination. One hundred and forty participants completed the Memory and Affective Flexibility Task (MAFT), design

Who Benefits from Anxiety-Related Interpretation Bias Training? The Role of Individual Differences in Interpretation Inflexibility and Intolerance of Uncertainty.

While anxiety-related cognitive bias modification for interpretations (CBM-I) is generally effective in reducing negative interpretation bias and anxiety, individuals differ in the extent to which they benefit from CBM-I. This proof-of-concept study investigated whether interpretation inflexibility and intolerance of uncertainty account for variability in CBM-I's effects on interpretations. Participants (N = 274), primarily female students, completed either a positive or a negative online single-session CBM-I training. Interpretation inflexibility and intolerance of uncertainty were measured b

Coping flexibility and strategy use predict burnout: A two-week longitudinal study.

Burnout is a prevalent and costly work-related condition characterized by four symptom dimensions: cognitive impairment, emotional impairment, mental distance and exhaustion. Although coping, coping flexibility, and cognitive flexibility have been linked to burnout, their unique contributions to its dimensions remain unclear. This longitudinal study used regression analyses to test whether coping, coping flexibility, and cognitive flexibility predict dimensions of burnout two weeks later, adjusting for covariates and baseline burnout. Participants were 337 Australian adults (62% women), aged 1

Training variability facilitates the flexibility of goal-specific spatial probability learning.

Selection history is traditionally characterized as a rigid and automated habit that persists regardless of current goals. Although recent research suggests that explicit goals can modulate this process, the mechanisms underlying this flexibility and its acquisition conditions remain poorly understood. Across two experiments using simple geometric shapes, the present study examined the joint modulatory effects of explicit goals and training variability on spatial probability learning. Experiment 1 demonstrated that explicit goals can directly activate the spatial priority map, ruling out confo

Examining the relationship between cognitive factors and insight in panic disorder before and during treatment.

Individuals with Panic Disorder (PD) often have impaired insight, which can impede their willingness to seek treatment. Cognitive processes, including metacognitive beliefs, cognitive flexibility, and jumping to conclusions (JTC) may influence the degree of insight. By understanding the relationship between insight and these cognitive factors in PD, we can better identify individuals with such vulnerabilities to improve their insight. The aim of this study is to examine the relationships between metacognition, cognitive flexibility, and JTC with clinical and cognitive insight at pretreatment.

Behavioural flexibility and problem-solving in a tropical lizard.

The role of behavioural flexibility in responding to new or changing environmental challenges is a central theme in cognitive ecology. Studies of behavioural flexibility have focused mostly on mammals and birds because theory predicts that behavioural flexibility is favoured in species or clades that exploit a diversity of habitats or food sources and/or have complex social structure, attributes not associated with ectothermic vertebrates. Here, we present the results of a series of experiments designed to test cognitive abilities across multiple cognitive modules in a tropical arboreal lizard

Patters of creative thinking in preadolescents with dyslexia: School level differences in the figural creative advantage.

Although research on creativity and dyslexia produced contrasting results, accumulated evidence suggests that the characteristics associated with dyslexia may underlie the creative advantage often reported in the literature. Rather than a general creative advantage in individuals with dyslexia, empirical findings pointed at strengths in specific sub-processes of creative thinking. While previous studies have attempted to identify the cognitive mechanisms that explain the dyslexic creative benefit, the role of age has been scarcely investigated, especially during school transitions. To explore

Momentary persistence of negative interpretations as a dynamic marker of emotional distress.

Inflexible revision of negative interpretations has been implicated in depression and social anxiety. Yet evidence primarily stems from studies employing controlled cognitive tasks that rely on standardized fictional scenarios. To track how negative interpretations persist over time in an everyday life context, this study developed the Daily Life Interpretation Inflexibility Task (DL-IIT) and embedded this cognitive task in an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol. The DL-IIT was designed to capture the emergence and persistence of momentary negative interpretations and to test their

Inhibitory control underpins the relationship between cognitive and psychological inflexibility after a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive flexibility is proposed as being one "building block" of psychological inflexibility/flexibility, yet empirical studies examining these associations are scarce. This study aims to examine the relationship between these constructs in those with a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury who demonstrate impairments in cognitive flexibility. METHOD: A total of 66 individuals with a traumatic brain injury were administered a battery of cognitive flexibility measures in conjunction with their standard neuropsychological assessment, general (Acceptance and Action Questionnaire

Acute stress impairs reversal learning in mice via neurochemical and transcriptional mechanisms in the orbitofrontal cortex.

The effects of acute stress on cognitive flexibility are significant but inconsistent across studies. To address this inconsistency, we investigated how varying durations of acute restraint stress affect reversal learning in mice with different innate cognitive flexibility, across tasks of varying difficulty. Results revealed that 1-hour acute restraint stress impaired reversal learning in a 4-choice task but not in a 2-choice task. In the 2-choice task, 2-hour stress led to reversal learning deficits in mice with low baseline cognitive flexibility but not in those with high baseline cognitive

Executive function predictors of science achievement in middle-school students.

Cognitive flexibility as measured by the Wisconsin Card Sort Task (WCST) has long been associated with frontal lobe function. More recently, this construct has been associated with executive function (EF), which shares overlapping neural correlates. Here, we investigate the relationship between EF, cognitive flexibility, and science achievement in adolescents. This is important because there are fewer educational neuroscience studies of scientific reasoning than of other academically relevant forms of cognition (i.e., mathematical thinking and language understanding). Eighth grade students at

The emergence of a functionally flexible brain during early infancy.

Adult brains are functionally flexible, a unique characteristic that is thought to contribute to cognitive flexibility. While tools to assess cognitive flexibility during early infancy are lacking, we aimed to assess the spatiotemporal developmental features of "neural flexibility" during the first 2 y of life. Fifty-two typically developing children 0 to 2 y old were longitudinally imaged up to seven times during natural sleep using resting-state functional MRI. Using a sliding window approach, MR-derived neural flexibility, a quantitative measure of the frequency at which brain regions chang
