Prevalence, assessment, and treatment of pathological gambling: a review.

OBJECTIVE: Although pathological gambling is an increasing problem, many mental health providers are unfamiliar with its diagnosis and treatment. To improve recognition and treatment of pathological gambling, the authors reviewed the literature on its prevalence, assessment, and treatment. METHODS: Entries in PsycLIT and MEDLINE were examined for the years 1984 to 1998. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The prevalence of pathological gambling seems to be increasing with the spread of legalized gambling; casinos are now operating in 27 states. Point and lifetime prevalence rates of pathological gamblin

[Better Sleep and Less Pain? Sleep Training in Orthopedic Rehabilitation].

PURPOSE: There is high comorbidity between chronic pain and insomnia. Not only does chronic pain impair sleep, poor sleep quality can also exacerbate the sensation of pain. However, usually, the respective symptoms are treated separately. We evaluate a new cognitive behavioral sleep-pain-training aiming at improving symptoms of both insomnia and chronic pain in the setting of ambulant orthopedic rehabilitation. METHODS: N=41 patients participated in the study (with 15 participants being enrolled in the control group). The training consists of 4 modules á 90min and was explicitly developed for

How training culture normalizes sport bullying: suffering, obedience, and structural violence in athlete development.

Sports bullying is increasingly recognized as a pervasive public health and athlete welfare crisis, yet the micro-level mechanisms that legitimize and sustain it remain underexplored. This study conceptualizes how entrenched "training cultures" normalize structural violence in competitive sports. Positioned as a critical integrative review and an exploratory multiple-case qualitative study, the research utilizes a three-stage thematic analysis. The empirical corpus comprises secondary archival data from two quintessential incidents (the U.S. Maggie Haney case and the Chinese Fu Jiali case), tr

Movement Through Time: The Evolution of Treatment for People With Parkinson Disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parkinson disease (PD) is the fastest-growing neurological disorder worldwide, projected to affect approximately 25 million people by 2050. Despite effective pharmacologic management of motor symptoms, patients consistently identify walking, mobility, and balance as their greatest challenges. This Special Interest paper, based on the 2026 Anne Shumway-Cook Lectureship, summarizes a program of research aimed at building the evidence base for rehabilitation in PD and translating that evidence into improved real-world outcomes. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Four interrelated th

A narrative review of barriers to and promotion strategies for female college students' sports participation in a cross-cultural context.

Female university students face significant barriers to sports participation across diverse cultural contexts, despite its well-documented benefits for physical and mental health. Through a narrative review of 18 studies, this paper synthesizes barriers and identifies multi-level promotion strategies. Findings reveal four interconnected dimensions of obstacles: (a) Physiological barriers, including menstrual health concerns and heightened injury risks due to inadequate skills/knowledge; (b) Psychological barriers, characterized by body image anxiety, low self-efficacy, and trauma from negative

'My goal was to become normal'-A qualitative investigation of coping with stigma, body image and self-esteem long-term after bariatric surgery.

Improved self-esteem and body image, as well as reduced experiences of weight stigma are important patient-reported obesity treatment outcomes. However, more knowledge is needed about how individuals who have undergone metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) perceive themselves and their bodies and use different coping strategies in relation to body image and self-esteem long-term after MBS. In this qualitative study body image, self-esteem, weight stigma and coping strategies were explored among 18 individuals who underwent MBS more than 10 years ago when interviewed. Variability in clinician intentions to implement specific cognitive-behavioral therapy components.

BACKGROUND: CBT comprises many discrete components that vary in complexity, but implementation and training efforts often approach CBT as a single entity. We examined variability in clinician intentions to use different structural and interventional components of CBT for three different clinical groups: clients receiving CBT, clients with depression, and clients with anxiety. METHODS: Clinicians (n = 107) trained in CBT completed a one-time electronic survey. Clinicians' intentions were measured using established item stems from social psychology adapted to examine intentions to use six speci

Appearing anxious leads to negative judgments by others.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate people's perceptions of anxiety symptoms and the disclosure of anxiety by others, and how one's own level of social anxiety affects these perceptions. DESIGN: Undergraduate students and community members high (n = 83) and low (n = 80) in social anxiety, as measured by the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS; Mattick & Clark, 1998), were randomly assigned to watch 1 of 4 videos in which the target individual either appeared or did not appear anxious, and either disclosed or did not disclose her anxiety. Effectiveness of a manualized imagery rehearsal therapy for patients suffering from nightmare disorders with and without a comorbidity of depression or PTSD.

Nightmares are a common and serious problem in psychotherapeutic practice, although they are seldom considered as independent mental disorders. There are some promising approaches to the treatment of nightmares, notably Imagery Rehearsal Therapy, a cognitive-restructuring treatment. The core of this approach is the modification of the nightmare script and repeated imagination of the new script. However, most evaluation surveys have been conducted only with trauma patients, and thus far there is no standardized manual in the German language. 69 participants were examined using self-rating quest

Teaching children clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) in a group setting.

OBJECTIVE: To teach children to perform clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC) at our institution, the nurse practitioner uses a step-by-step approach in combination with an instruction model in an outpatient setting. For a small group of children the procedure remains difficult to learn. For them, we developed a multidisciplinary, group-wise training program. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Small groups of children, aged 7-12 years, and their parents consulted our clinic during six meetings. The group training was provided by a pediatric urology nurse practitioner, physiotherapist and behaviou

Relationship among psychopathological dimensions, coping mechanisms, and glycemic control in a Croatian sample of adolescents with diabetes mellitus type 1.

Psychopathological factors associated with metabolic control in juvenile insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) deserve further investigation. This study assessed the relationship among specific psychopathological dimensions, coping mechanisms, and metabolic control in a Croatian clinical sample of adolescents with IDDM. One-hundred and one adolescents (aged 11-18) with IDDM filled out the youth self report (YSR) assessing psychopathological dimension and the scale of coping with stress (SCS). Glycemic control was estimated by the percentage of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Subjects were di

Social cognition in Intermittent Explosive Disorder and aggression.

Social-emotional information processing (SEIP) was assessed in individuals with current DSM-5 Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED: n = 100) and in healthy (n = 100) and psychiatric (n = 100) controls using a recently developed and validated self-rated questionnaire. SEIP vignettes depicted both direct aggressive and relationally aggressive scenarios of a socially ambiguous nature and were followed by questions assessing subjects' reactions and judgments about the vignettes. IED subjects differed from both healthy and psychiatric controls in all SEIP components. While hostile attribution was h

The clicking doctors: how the mouse restructures clinical attention.

The attention of office-based physicians is increasingly structured less by the patients in front of them than by the screen beside them - by the clicks, notifications, system lags, and task-switching that the practice information system demands. Research on cognitive load and burnout documents the demands of screen work, but commonly used outcome measures do not directly assess whether repeated fragmentation changes habitual patterns of clinical attention. This article pursues exactly that question: what screen work may change is less the amount of attention than its disposition. Drawing on r

Combating loneliness in older adults: A randomized clinical trial evaluating the acceptability and efficacy of a brief, technology-delivered intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Despite continued prevention efforts, loneliness in older adults remains a risk factor for negative mental health outcomes. Loneliness can develop from disrupted interpersonal perceptions, namely thwarted belongingness (TB) and perceived burdensomeness (PB). This study examined the effectiveness of the Combating Loneliness Intervention (CLI), a brief online treatment using cognitive and behavioral strategies to reduce loneliness by restructuring cognitions and behaviors related to TB and PB in older adults. The study aimed to test three hypotheses: (1) CLI would be well-received reg

Development and proof-of-concept of a treatment target recommendation algorithm in the context of cognitive processing therapy.

Background: Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an effective, widely supported treatment for PTSD, but patient response varies considerably. Optimally targeting maladaptive trauma-related beliefs (stuck points) may significantly enhance treatment outcomes. This study evaluated the feasibility of developing a recommendation algorithm that helps clinicians identify specific patient-endorsed stuck points, which, when effectively restructured, could lead to greater reductions in PTSD symptoms. Methods: Data were drawn from 898 veterans and service members participating in a two-week CPT-based acc

A Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser Syndrome Adapted for Other Disorders of Sex Development: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Variations in Sex Characteristics (VSC) also called Differences in/Disorders of Sex Development (DSD) include a range of conditions of congenital abnormalities of the reproductive system. Either the internal and/or external genital tract are affected, presenting as androgenisation of the external genitalia, or incomplete formation of the vagina and uterus, and/or gonads. We previously developed a model of the core psychological impact of diagnosis/medical treatment of one of these conditions, namely utero-vaginal-agenesis or Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser Syndrome (MRKH), and a Cog

Neuroadaptation in neurodegenerative diseases: compensatory mechanisms and therapeutic approaches.

Progressive neuronal loss is a hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which cause cognitive and motor impairment. Delaying the onset and course of symptoms is largely dependent on neuroadaptation, the brain's ability to restructure in response to damage. The molecular, cellular, and systemic processes that underlie neuroadaptation are examined in this study. These mechanisms include gliosis, neurogenesis, synaptic plasticity, and changes in neurotrophic factors. Axonal sprouting, dendritic remodelling, a

Psychosocial Interventions With Cognitive-Behavioral Components for the Treatment of Cancer-Related Traumatic Stress Symptoms: A Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

BackgroundCancer-related traumatic stress symptoms, including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), can significantly impact the quality of life and psychological adjustment of patients and survivors with cancer. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective intervention previously shown to ameliorate non-cancer-related PTSD. Because of some of the unique aspects of cancer-related traumatic stress, such as the internal and ongoing nature of the traumatic stressor, it is important to review the overall efficacy of CBT interventions in populations with cancer.ObjectiveTo review the findings
