Mental Health Stressors and Barriers to Support Among Rural Farmers: A Qualitative Study of Agricultural Communities in the East South-Central United States.

Introduction: Suicide rates among individuals working in agriculture remain disproportionately high in the United States. Although farming-related stressors and coping strategies are documented, gaps remain in understanding how farmers sustain themselves psychologically amid chronic stress and why elevated suicide risk persists despite apparent resilience. Purpose: This study sought to explore the major stressors of farming, coping strategies used by farmers, and their barriers to help-seeking, with the goal of informing suicide prevention and mental health interventions. Methods: Fourteen sem

Community-level barriers and facilitators of indoor residual spraying for malaria control: a systematic review of qualitative evidence from sub-Saharan Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Indoor residual spraying is a key strategy in the control against malaria, which still remains a devastating public health challenge in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was recommended by the World Health Organization, yet its effectiveness is still being compromised by low community uptake. Unlike other malaria interventions, indoor residual spraying is intrusive and requires entry into private household spaces and substantial domestic preparation. Household refusal and locked structures still remain primary threats to the success of the campaign. Although qualitative studies have examine

Facilitators and Barriers to Implementing Peer-Led Neurocognitive Screening for Older Adults Living With HIV at a Community Hospital in Thailand: A Multiple-Methods Study.

INTRODUCTION: Neurocognitive impairment (NCI) is increasingly prevalent among older adults living with HIV (OALHIV). HIV clinics in low- and middle-income countries often do not routinely screen for NCI. Task-shifting screening to peer educators might be an alternative approach. We explored facilitators and barriers to implementing a peer-led NCI screening tool in an HIV clinic in Thailand. METHODS: The study took place at a community hospital HIV clinic in suburban Chiang Mai. Peer educators were trained to screen OALHIV ≥50 years for NCI using the International HIV-Dementia Scale for global

Penicillin Allergy Delabeling: Provider Knowledge, Practice Patterns, and Barriers Among Internal Medicine Residents in a Large Urban Community Teaching Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Penicillin allergy is the most frequently reported drug allergy, yet up to 90% of labels are inaccurate. These erroneous labels contribute to suboptimal antibiotic use, higher healthcare costs, and increased antimicrobial resistance. Despite growing evidence supporting delabeling, provider hesitancy and knowledge gaps persist. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the awareness, confidence, and clinical decision-making of internal medicine residents regarding penicillin allergy delabeling within a large community hospital setting. Specifically, we seek to identify ex

Cancer Screening and Prevention in MENA and Mediterranean Populations: A Multi-Level Analysis of Barriers, Knowledge Gaps, and Interventions Across Indigenous and Diaspora Communities.

Cancer is one of the biggest health burdens for women in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), with the incidence of breast, cervical and colorectal cancer on the rise. Although preventive measures such as the HPV vaccination and population-based screening are available, access to them remains very unequal. Women in rural, low-income and refugee communities face additional barriers, cultural stigmatisation, low health literacy, gender norms and fragile health systems, leading to delayed diagnoses and poorer outcomes. This review summarises the results of 724 peer-reviewed publications to as

Barriers and facilitators to programmatic mass drug administration in persistent schistosomiasis hotspot communities: An ethnographic study along Lake Albert, midwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: The WHO Neglected Tropical Disease Roadmap for 2021-2030 includes the goal of eliminating schistosomiasis as a public health problem in all endemic countries. Despite heightened efforts since 2012, critical action is still required in addressing barriers to Mass Drug Administration, the primary control method. This includes improvement in adherence by the populations in persistent schistosomiasis hotspots. One such hotspot is the shoreline of Lake Albert, Uganda, where schistosomiasis control is provided to school-aged children and adults. An overemphasis on regular treatment, with

Coproduction of Low-Barrier Hepatitis C Virus and HIV Care for People Who Use Drugs in a Rural Community: Brief Qualitative Report.

BACKGROUND: People who inject drugs are experiencing syndemic conditions with increasing risk of infection with hepatitis C (HCV) and HIV. However, rates of accessing HCV and HIV testing and treatment among people who inject drugs are low for various reasons, including the criminalization of drug use, which leads to a focus on treating drug use rather than caring for drug users. For many people who inject drugs, health care becomes a form of structural violence, resulting in traumatic experiences, fear of police violence, unmet needs, and avoidance of medical care. There is a clear need for no

"This is a Pakhtun disease": Pakhtun health journalists' perceptions of the barriers and facilitators to polio vaccine acceptance among the high-risk Pakhtun community in Pakistan.

INTRODUCTION: Pakistan is one of only three poliomyelitis-endemic countries in the world. Twelve wild poliovirus (WPV) cases were recorded in the country in 2018. Even though resistance to oral polio vaccine (OPV) has decreased over time, there are still pockets of communities, mostly ethnic Pakhtun living in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, that resist OPV. Although local journalists may be important sources of health information, past studies have overlooked their role in this context. The purpose of this study was to examine Pakhtun health journalists' beliefs regarding OPV and their v

"Kala-Azar is a Dishonest Disease": Community Perspectives on Access Barriers to Visceral Leishmaniasis (Kala-Azar) Diagnosis and Care in Southern Gadarif, Sudan.

Early diagnosis and treatment is the principal strategy to control visceral leishmaniasis (VL), or kala-azar in East Africa. As VL strikes remote rural, sparsely populated areas, kala-azar care might not be accessed optimally or timely. We conducted a qualitative study to explore access barriers in a longstanding kala-azar endemic area in southern Gadarif, Sudan. Former kala-azar patients or caretakers, community leaders, and health-care providers were purposively sampled and thematic data analysis was used. Our study participants revealed the multitude of difficulties faced when seeking care.

Bridging the gap: exploring healthcare professionals' perceptions and barriers towards cervical cancer screening services uptake amongst women in rural communities.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer remains a significant public health concern, particularly in rural communities where access to screening and diagnostic services is limited. Despite being preventable through HPV vaccination and early detection via screening, cervical cancer continues to pose substantial health challenges in resource-limited settings. Colposcopy, a crucial diagnostic procedure for women with abnormal screening results, faces various implementation challenges in rural healthcare settings. OBJECTIVE: This study explores healthcare professionals' perceptions, experiences, and identifie

Do Geographic Barriers and Community Vulnerability Impact PrEP Use Among Transgender Latinas in the US South? Findings from the ChiCAS Study.

Transgender (trans) Latinas in the United States face disproportionately higher HIV rates and persistently low use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) despite awareness. While geographic access to PrEP has been identified as a barrier in other populations, little is known about how spatial access and community-level vulnerability shape PrEP use among trans Latinas in the US South. Using data from the randomized intervention-waitlist control trial of ChiCAS (N = 144), we examined (1) proximity to Spanish-language PrEP providers, (2) neighborhood vulnerability using the Social Vulnerability Index
