Communication and Support-Focused Experiences and Needs of Young Adult Couples Coping With Cancer: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer among young adult (YA) couples is a profoundly distressing experience, extracting a significant toll on YA couples' relationships (e.g., with partners, family, friends). It is well recognized that effective communication within social relationships is critical for fostering well-being among couples coping with cancer. Despite this, limited research exists focused on communication and support needs among YA couples. AIMS: Through qualitative semi-structured interviews, we explored the unique needs and experiences of YA couples with a focus on communication and support within

Mobile Health Hearing Aid Acclimatization and Support Program in Low-Income Communities: Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: The most common management option for hearing loss is hearing aids. In addition to devices, patients require information and support, including maintenance and troubleshooting. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies can support hearing aid management, acclimatization, and use. This study developed an mHealth acclimatization and support program for first-time hearing aid users and subsequently implemented and pilot-tested the feasibility of the program. The program was facilitated by community health workers (CHWs) in low-income communities in South Africa. OBJECTIVE: This study aime

Long-Acting Reversible Contraception for Adolescents: A Review of Practices to Support Better Communication, Counseling, and Adherence.

Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods, including levonorgestrel and copper intrauterine devices (IUDs) and the subdermal contraceptive implant, are the most effective reversible forms of contraception and thus are an important aspect of adolescent pregnancy prevention. While LARC efficacy, safety, and appropriateness are supported by major medical organizations and usage rates are increasing, overall LARC uptake among United States (US) adolescents remains lower than uptake of short-acting contraceptive methods. A better understanding of the barriers affecting adolescent LARC upt

Opportunities to expand access to mental health services: A case for the role of online peer support communities.

This study investigated whether with disruptions in care due to the COVID-19 pandemic, persons who self-identified as living with a mental health condition increased their usage of an online peer support community. We also explored whether study participants who self-reported usage of online peer support communities were interested in using these communities to connect with evidence-based interventions and mental health services. This study employed a cross-sectional online survey design. The survey was disseminated by the Inspire online peer support community and Mental Health America through

Using Online Support Communities for Tourette Syndrome and Tic Disorders: Online Survey of Users' Experiences.

BACKGROUND: People living with a tic disorder (TD)-such as Tourette syndrome (TS)-experience many negative psychological and social challenges arising from chronic tics, such as stigmatization from peers and poorer quality of life, and these can impact upon their families too. It can be difficult for this population to access face-to-face support for tics, and so online support communities offer one avenue for support from peers facing similar experiences. However, little is known about how online support communities may be used by people with TS and other TDs, and by others (eg, parents, care

Gender differences in the relation between social support, problems in parent-offspring communication, and depression and anxiety.

Gender differences in the buffer-effect of social support in the relation between stressful circumstances and the development of depression and anxiety disorders are widely assumed, but few studies address this three-way interaction between gender, stress, and support. Data in the present study came from the baseline assessment of the Adolescents at Risk for Anxiety and Depression (ARIADNE) study in 502 adolescent and young-adult children of 356 parents in the Netherlands with a depression, panic disorder and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Results indicate that the daughters benefit more fr

Parent and friend support and communication as correlates of sexual and gender minority alcohol use in sexual contexts.

PURPOSE: Emerging adults who identify as sexual and gender minorities (SGM) often report greater alcohol use and adverse sexual health experiences compared to cisgender heterosexual (CH) peers. This study investigated whether participants' identity as either SGM or CH was related to drinking in sexual contexts (DISC) through its relationship with levels of social support, supportive communication, and sex communication from parents and friends. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey responses were collected on-line during November 2024-May 2025 from a convenience sample of 674 university students in

Paired oral clinical specimens reveal the underlying ecology supporting the emergence of inflammophilic microbiome communities.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory oral diseases are associated with reproducible shifts from commensal-dominated microbiota toward pathobiont-enriched communities, yet the ecological mechanisms underlying the emergence of inflammophiles remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate if host-derived inflammatory environments act as selective pressures that restructure microbial metabolism and community organization during disease progression. METHODS: We performed 16S rRNA gene sequencing of patient-matched pediatric dental plaque and odontogenic abscess specimens to capture microbial communi

Experiential knowledge and peer support in type 1 diabetes: insights from endurance running communities.

BACKGROUND: Managing type 1 diabetes (T1D) during endurance running requires highly individualized strategies, yet conventional healthcare offers limited sport-specific guidance. Peer communities have emerged as key sources of experiential knowledge, emotional support, and practical tools. OBJECTIVE: To explore how endurance runners with T1D build self-management strategies, use peer networks and digital platforms, and integrate these exchanges into identity and daily life. METHODS: Thirteen French-speaking adults with T1D who had completed at least one marathon or ultra-endurance event part

Anaerobic oxidation of methane supports a minimal microbial community in a subsurface biofilm at Ginsburg mud volcano.

Deep marine sediments generate large amounts of methane, but most of this gas is consumed by the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) mediated by microscopic consortia of anaerobic methane-oxidizing archaea (ANME) and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). In this study, we investigated the AOM within a sulfate-methane transition zone (SMTZ) at a depth of ~9.6 m at the rim of the Ginsburg mud volcano in the Gulf of Cádiz. The SMTZ is supplied with sulfate from both overlying seawater and an underlying evaporitic deposit, and it coincides with a fracture zone that hosts a visible biofilm. Here, carbo

Cost constraints in supporting the Healthy Living Practices in remote Aboriginal communities: A Western Australian perspective.

The Healthy Living Practices (HLPs) outline nine essential guidelines for maintaining health in remote Aboriginal communities, yet high costs and poor availability make them financially out of reach for many families. We assessed the cost and availability of essential goods required to support the HLPs in eight remote Kimberley community stores, recording prices during three visits in 2022 as part of the SToP (See, Treat, Prevent) Skin Sores and Scabies Trial, and retrospectively comparing these (inflation-adjusted) with Perth and Broome prices in 2024. Owing to limited stock, data were analys

Paired oral clinical specimens reveal the underlying ecology supporting the emergence of inflammophilic microbiome communities.

Across human mucosal sites, dysbiotic inflammatory diseases are characterized by compositional shifts in the resident microbiota, in which commensal-dominated communities give way to pathobiont-enriched communities where "inflammophilic" species often predominate. Effective treatments for these complex polymicrobial infections remain limited, in part, because the ecological mechanisms driving their emergence and persistence are still poorly understood. To address this gap, we analyzed a unique cohort of pediatric patient-matched, disease-free dental plaque and odontogenic abscess specimens, pr

Facilitators and barriers faced by community organizations supporting older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, olderadult-focused community organizations played an essential role in supporting the wellbeing of older adults. Supporting older adults during this time required extensive modifications to existing programming but their adaptations during the COVID-19 pandemic are not well documented. The purpose of this study was to understand how older adult-focused community organizations adopted virtual delivery formats during the COVID-19 pandemic and their perspectives of the barriers and facilitators for organizations and older adults. METHODS: To understand t

Person-Centred Plans From the Perspective of Persons-Supported in a Community Care Setting: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: In partnership with PHSS, a community care agency in London, Ontario, we describe the person-centred planning model. Person-centred plans (PCPs) are mandated in the community care sector and created annually through discussions with the person-supported, staff, family/friends and community members. PCPs are individualised, integrated into daily activities and contribute towards larger goals. METHODS: We interviewed 18 persons-supported and one family member. Participants were individuals with developmental, medical, or complex physical needs and supported by PHSS. We explored goal

Enhancing the detection of familial hypercholesterolaemia in general practice: A model for supporting genetic cascade testing in the community.

Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a common, co-dominant cause of premature coronary artery disease that remains under-recognised worldwide. Genetic testing, the most accurate diagnostic method, is particularly valuable in the cascade testing of close blood relatives, but there is little experience in general practice. We developed a tertiary-primary shared care model to identify genetic FH among first-degree relatives (FDRs) of FH index cases. Service and clinical outcomes were assessed. From a total of 153 FDRs of 90 adult FH index cases, 105 (corresponding to 64 index cases) undertook g

Compassionate engagement of communities in support of palliative and end-of-life care: challenges in post-pandemic era.

Over the years, humanity has faced various global crises of different kinds that have caused great suffering in the community, such as wars, slavery, torture or the Holocaust, but also climate change, economic crises, or sanitary disasters. The recent pandemic posed a barrier to palliative and End-of-Life (EoL) care, as the need for physical distance made it difficult to retain essential human interactions while minimizing the risk of viral transmission. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the robustness of supportive networks (i.e., family, friends, neighbors, and community members) determined whet
