Knowledge, Observation and Practices Related to Neonatal Jaundice in a Rural Community in Kano, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal jaundice (NNJ) is a common condition and when not adequately treated leads to acute bilirubin encephalopathy/kernicterus. This largely preventable condition is an important cause of death and disability in low- and middle-income countries. Education, early detection and effective management are key for prevention and require an understanding of community knowledge and practices to foster appropriate behavior to prevent severe NNJ. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify knowledge, observation for jaundice (both active and passive) and practices related to NNJ in n

Community pharmacy interventions for health promotion: effects on professional practice and health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Community pharmacies are an easily accessible and cost-effective platform for delivering health care worldwide, and the range of services provided has undergone rapid expansion in recent years. Thus, in addition to dispensing medication, pharmacy workers within community pharmacies now give advice on a range of health-promoting behaviours that aim to improve health and to optimise the management of long-term conditions. However, it remains uncertain whether these health-promotion interventions can change the professional practice of pharmacy workers, improve health behaviours and o

Effect of age on outcomes and practice patterns for patients with anterior communicating artery aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: With widespread utilization of noninvasive imaging, small unruptured anterior communicating artery (AcoA) aneurysms are increasingly detected in the general population, particularly in elderly patients. We investigated the association between age and clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with unruptured AcoA aneurysms. METHODS: Between January 2008 and May 2016, information on 179 consecutive patients with unruptured AcoA aneurysms was obtained and included demographic data, aneurysm features, risk factors for formation and rupture, treatment type, complications, and f

Improving the Health of Patients and Communities: Evolving Practice-based Research (PBR) and Collaborations.

This issue illustrates how research from practice-based research networks has evolved to span a spectrum from improving patient-level care and practice quality to improving health within local and global communities. Articles address patient-level improvements (a biomarker for cardiovascular disease progression, late-onset anorexia nervosa, complementary health approaches used by patients, and patient preferences related to antibiotics for acute respiratory infections); practice-level improvements (selection of types of fecal immunochemical tests, practice facilitation, practice registry imple

Breast feeding practices as cultural interventions for early childhood caries in Cree communities.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is a gift from mother to child and has a wide range of positive health, social and cultural impacts on infants. The link between bottle feeding and the prevalence of early childhood caries (ECC) is well documented. In Aboriginal communities, the higher rates of ECC are linked with low rates of breast feeding and inappropriate infant feeding of high sugar content liquids. METHODS: The Baby Teeth Talk Study (BTT) is one project that is exploring the use of four interventions (motivational interviewing, anticipatory guidance, fluoride varnish and dental care to expectan

Redesigning a large school-based clinical trial in response to changes in community practice.

BACKGROUND: Asthma exacerbations are seasonal with the greatest risk in elementary-age students occurring shortly after returning to school following summer break. Recent research suggests that this seasonality in children is primarily related to viral respiratory tract infections. Regular hand washing is the most effective method to prevent the spread of viral respiratory infections; unfortunately, achieving hand washing recommendations in schools is difficult. Therefore, we designed a study to evaluate the effect of hand sanitizer use in elementary schools on exacerbations among children wit

Tungiasis-related knowledge and treatment practices in two endemic communities in northeast Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis, caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans, is highly prevalent in many resource-poor communities in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean. Studies on knowledge and treatment practices related to tungiasis in affected populations are virtually nonexistent. To fill this gap, we performed a study in two resource-poor communities in northeast Brazil where this parasitic skin disease is highly prevalent. METHODOLOGY: Structured interviews were realized in a representative sample of household leaders in an urban slum in Fortaleza, capital of Ceará State (northeast

Increasing hospitalizations and general practice prescriptions for community-onset staphylococcal disease, England.

Rates of hospital-acquired staphylococcal infection increased throughout the 1990s; however, information is limited on trends in community-onset staphylococcal disease in the United Kingdom. We used Hospital Episode Statistics to describe trends in hospital admissions for community-onset staphylococcal disease and national general practice data to describe trends in community prescribing for staphylococcal disease. Hospital admission rates for staphyloccocal septicemia, staphylococcal pneumonia, staphylococcal scalded-skin syndrome, and impetigo increased >5-fold. Admission rates increased 3-f

Asking well-built questions for evidence-based practice in augmentative and alternative communication.

UNLABELLED: Evidence-based practice (EBP) is increasingly being advocated as the preferred approach to practice in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The EBP process involves multiple steps. The asking of a well-built question is the first step in the quest for answers. At the same time it is also often the first stumbling block for practitioners. To facilitate the asking of well-built questions it may be helpful to follow a template. The most frequently used template is PICO, which stands for patient, intervention, comparison, and outcome [Richardson, W., Wilson, M., Nishikawa,

Fit for purpose: does specialist community nurse education prepare nurses for practice?

This paper sets out to explore the experience of newly qualified community nurses, one year on in practice, and to establish if the specialist course prepares them for the reality of practice. It presents a piece of action research evaluating the education process for community nurses through a series of cycles of self-reflection which lead to recommendations for both policy and curriculum changes. Our findings show that community nurses are very positive about their new roles and their work with clients and patients, that they are able to use their newly acquired analytical skills in their pr

[Practical significance of ischemic stroke OCSP (Oxfordshire Community Stroke Project) classification].

OCSP classification based on neurological signs and syndromes contains four subtypes of ischaemic stroke: lacunar infarct (LACI), total anterior circulation infarcts (TACI), partial anterior circulation infarcts (PACI), posterior circulation infarcts (POCI). Literature reports suggest that this classification may be useful in estimation of after stroke complications and prognostication, and can raise the sensitivity of therapeutic clinical tests. The aim of this study was to estimate the occurrence of risk factors, accompanying complications and prognosis in a material of clinical records of 3

Community-based survey of paediatric diarrhoeal morbidity and home treatment practices in Finland.

To determine total diarrhoeal morbidity and current home case management practices, a recall study was conducted among 345 mothers whose 406 children under 5 y of age had had diarrhoea in the past 4 months. The seasonally adjusted annual diarrhoea incidence rate was 0.48 episodes/child/y. For home treatment, increased amounts of fluid were given in 93% and oral rehydration solution (ORS) in 37% of cases. However, when given, ORS was diluted with other fluids in 41% of cases. More than half (55%) of the children received increased or normal amounts of food during the diarrhoeal episode, but 7%

Knowledge, attitudes and practices during a community-level ivermectin distribution campaign in Guatemala.

Community acceptance and participation are essential for the success of mass ivermectin chemotherapy programmes for onchocerciasis (river blindness). To explore the local understanding of the purpose of ivermectin and willingness to continue taking the drug, we performed questionnaire surveys in four communities with hyperendemic onchocerciasis after each of three ivermectin treatment rounds. More than 100 respondents participated in each KAP survey, representing the heads of 30% of the households in each community. The respondents rarely stated that the goal of the ivermectin treatment progra

Instructor Development of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) Self-Efficacy within a PoP-CURE Professional Development Community of Practice.

This case study investigates changes in technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) self-efficacy in a group of instructors engaged in a Power of Place Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experience (PoP-CURE) Professional Development (PD) Community of Practice. We hypothesized that mentored and iterative PD would create a community of practice in which instructors become confident adopters of evidence-based technological PoP-CURE practices, promoting the overall development of instructor TPACK self-efficacy. Previous work on PD personas helped to inform our work by guiding observation

Dialogue on the use of artificial intelligence in health technology assessment: building a community of practice, transparency, and trust.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in health technology assessment (HTA) is rapidly emerging and evolving worldwide (1;2). While many may tout the potential of AI to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and speed of HTA, these technologies also present risks, concerns, and practical challenges that may limit responsible, ethical, and effective deployment. The 2025 HTAi Global Policy Forum (GPF) brought forward key themes regarding the use of AI in HTA, such as trust, human agency, and risk-based approaches (3). Others have also discussed the policy considerations of AI in HTA (4;5).

Application of a concise video to improve patient understanding of tumor genomic testing in community and academic practice settings.

PURPOSE: Tumor genomic testing (TGT) is standard-of-care for most patients with advanced/metastatic cancer. Despite established guidelines, patient education prior to TGT is frequently omitted. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact and durability of a concise 3-4 minute video for patient education prior to TGT in community versus academic sites and across cancer types. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing standard-of-care TGT were enrolled at a tertiary academic institution in three cohorts: Cohort 1-breast cancer; Cohort 2-lung cancer; Cohort 3-other cancers.
