Comparative life cycle assessment of excreta management systems through composting and biomethanization: Case of a low-income tropical country.

Low-income tropical regions, such as Haiti, grapple with environmental issues stemming from inadequate sanitation infrastructure for fecal sludge management. This study scrutinizes on-site sanitation systems in these regions, evaluating their environmental impacts and pinpointing improvement opportunities. The focus is specifically on systems integrating excreta valorization through composting and/or anaerobic digestion. Each system encompasses toilet access, evacuation, and sludge treatment. A comparative life cycle assessment was undertaken, with the functional unit managing one ton of excre

Elucidating carbon conversion and bacterial succession by amending Fenon-like systems during co-composting of pig manure and branch.

The essential point of current study was to investigate the effect of a Fenton-like system established by oxalic acid and Fe(II) on gas emission, organic matter decomposition and humification during composting. Branches were pretreated with Fenton reagents (0.02 M FeCl2·4H2O + 1.5 M H2O2) and then adding 10 % oxalic acid (OA). The treatments were marked as B1 (control), B2 (Fenton reagent), B3 (10% OA) and B4 (Fenton-like reagent). The results collected from 80 d of composting showed that adding Fenton-like reagent benefited the degradation of organic substances, as reflected by the total orga

Biochar improves the humification process during pig manure composting: Insights into roles of the bacterial community and metabolic functions.

Biochar could promote humification in composting, nevertheless, its mechanism has not been fully explored from the perspective of the overall bacterial community and its metabolism. This study investigated the effects of bamboo charcoal (BC) and wheat straw biochar (WSB) on the humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) contents during pig manure composting. The results showed that BC enhanced humification more than WSB, and significantly increased the HA content and HA/FA ratio. The bacterial community structure under BC differed from those under the other treatments, and BC increased the abundance

Combined effects of amoxicillin and copper on nitrogen transformation and the microbial mechanisms during aerobic composting of cow manure.

Pollutants in livestock manure have a compound effect during aerobic composting, but research to date has focused more on single factors. This study investigated the effects of adding amoxicillin (AMX), copper (Cu) and both (ACu) on nitrogen transformation and the microbial mechanisms in cow manure aerobic composting with wheat straw. In this study, compared with CK, AMX, Cu, and ACu increased NH3 cumulative emissions by 32.32%, 41.78% and 8.32%, respectively, due to their inhibition of ammonia oxidation. Coexisting AMX and Cu decreased the absolute abundances of amoA/ nxrA genes and increased

Sensitive response mechanism of ARGs and MGEs to initial designed temperature during swine manure and food waste co-composting.

The rapid aerobic composting process has been used to reduce organic wastes, but the associated risks of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) need to evaluate in an efficient way. The primary objective of this work was to explore the underlying mechanism of initial adjustment in composting temperature on the variation of ARGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and microbial composition during co-composting. The co-composting was initially externally heated (T2) for 5 days. The results showed that ARGs abundance in conventional composting (T1) was reduced by 49.36%, while multidrug was enriched by

Fluorescent characteristic and compositional change of dissolved organic matter and its effect on heavy metal distribution in composting leachates.

Composting leachates were collected to investigate the fluorescent characteristic and compositional change of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the effects of the DOM and nutrients on heavy metal distribution during a leachate combination treatment process. Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectra showed that, with the progress of the treatment units, the content of fulvic-like, humic-like, and protein-like substances gradually decreased. One fulvic-like component (C1), three humic-like components (C2, C3, and C4), and three protein-like components (C5, C6, and C7) were identifie

Effect of Feedstock Composition on Physicochemical and Microbiological Properties of Compost from Tuber and Acidic Fruit Peel Residues.

The application of compost as a soil amendment can reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, improve agricultural yields, and minimize the disposal of organic waste in landfills. However, the agronomic value of the resulting compost is strongly conditioned by the biochemical composition of the feedstock and the processing protocol. This study investigated how contrasting feedstocks affect thermal dynamics, physicochemical maturation, and microbiological safety indicators in two composting systems. Compost 1 (C1) was prepared from tuber peels of cassava (Manihot esculenta), potato (Solanum tub

Contrasting soil carbon stabilization pathways following spent mushroom substrate valorization into compost, hydrochar and biochar.

Enhancing soil organic carbon (SOC) through exogenous organic materials (EOMs) is an important strategy for improving soil carbon storage. However, how EOM properties and initial soil SOC levels jointly regulate carbon retention remains unclear. Therefore, a 120-day microcosm experiment was conducted using two purple soils with contrasting SOC levels (high-SOC soil, 20.9 g kg-1; low-SOC soil, 5.92 g kg-1) amended with spent mushroom substrate (SMS) and its derived compost, hydrochar, and biochar. Results indicated that under equivalent carbon inputs, carbon sequestration efficiency generally f

Sludge compost: a double-edged sword for depleted soil restoration revealed by integrated multi-omics analysis.

The prospective use of sludge compost for restoring depleted soils requires balancing its agronomic benefits against potential ecological risks. This study employed an integrated metagenomic and metabolomic approach to evaluate the dose-dependent effects of sludge compost on soil properties, maize growth, and rhizosphere microbial communities. Results showed that moderate compost application (≤15% w/w) enhanced soil nutrient availability, promoted root development, and enriched beneficial microbial taxa (Streptomyces, Mesorhizobium, Flavisolibacter), while upregulating plant stress-response me

Valorisation of spent activated carbon for accelerated compost stabilisation and enrichment of plant growth-promoting bacterial taxa.

The sustainable management of spent activated carbon (SAC) from water treatment remains an environmental challenge because reuse options are limited and disposal still relies on landfilling. This study evaluated SAC as a carbonaceous amendment during co-composting of chicken manure and spent mushroom substrate at 0% (Control), 10% (T1), 20% (T2), and 30% (T3) addition levels. SAC addition shortened the thermophilic phase from 12 days in the Control to 9 days in T2 and T3, and SAC-amended treatments reached operational stabilisation within 30-42 days, as indicated by temperature decline, lower

Water quality performance of vegetated compost blankets for highway stormwater management: Particulate matter and trace metals.

Urban stormwater pollution poses serious risks to human and environmental health, including trace metals toxicity. To improve the performance of existing highway Vegetated Filter Strips (VFS), which have limited performance for volume reduction and pollutant removal, amendment with a Vegetated Compost Blanket (VCB), a layer of seeded compost, has been proposed. A novel VCB/VFS system was assessed as a Stormwater Control Measure (SCM) via particulate matter and trace metals removal performance. Field and greenhouse studies of the VCB/VFS system were conducted and concentrations of total suspend

Crop contamination evaluation by antimicrobial-resistant bacteria via livestock waste compost-fertilized field soil.

Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria, selected by antimicrobial agent use in livestock, are emerging and their spread to crops from feces via composting represents a public health concern as they are ultimately transmitted to humans. In this study, we investigated Escherichia coli and other ampicillin (AMP)-resistant coliform spread conditions in field soil and dent corn, an agricultural crop, on a livestock-derived compost-applying farm. No AMP-resistant E. coli was detected in any samples of field soil and dent corn. In contrast, AMP-resistant and extended-spectrum β-lactam (ESBL) producing coli

Occurrence, fate and control strategies of heavy metals and antibiotics in livestock manure compost land application: A review.

Composting is a sustainable method for managing livestock manure, but the residual heavy metals and antibiotics in the compost pose can pose environmental risks when applied to land. Although many studies focus on occurrence and risk mitigation of heavy metals and antibiotics in manure compost land application, there is a lack of systematic analysis covering the entire chain from source to process and final disposal. Given this, this article provides a comprehensive review of the sources, migration, fate, risk assessment, and risk reduction of heavy metals and antibiotics contamination in land
