Underwater Impact and Intention-Behaviour Gap of Scuba Divers on Coral Communities in Hong Kong SAR, China.

Recreational diving, under the continual growth of the scuba diving industry, may escalate coral reef damage as one of the substantial anthropogenic impacts and is of pressing concern. Besides unregulated and excessive diving activities, accidental contact with corals by inexperienced divers can cause recurring physical damage and heighten the pressure on coral communities. Understanding the ecological impacts of underwater contact with marine biota will thus be crucial to develop more sustainable scuba diving practices in Hong Kong. To probe the scuba diving impacts of divers' contact with co

Effects of elevated temperature and copper exposure on the physiological state of the coral Galaxea fascicularis.

The co-occurrence of elevated seawater temperature and local stressors (heavy metal contamination) affects the ecophysiology of phototrophic species, and represents a risk to the environmental quality of coral reefs. Therefore, we investigated the effects of both Cu alone and Cu in combination with elevated temperature (ET) on the physiology of the coral Galaxea fascicularis, and measured the parameters related to the photo-physiology and oxidative state. G.fascicularis is one of the dominant coral species in the South China Sea which exhibits strong adaptability to environmental stress. We ex

Sexual Reproduction in Zoanthus kuroshio and Isaurus tuberculatus (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Zoanthidae) in Southern Japan.

Among family Zoanthidae (Anthozoa: Hexacorallia: Zoantharia), Zoanthus and Isaurus are widespread benthos on coral reefs, but the reproductive biology of both genera is generally unknown. Accordingly, sexual reproduction of two Zoanthidae species in Japan, Zoanthus kuroshio in Okinawa, and Isaurus tuberculatus in Okinawa and Kochi, was investigated by annual sampling. Between 2012 and 2013, polyps of tagged colonies of Z. kuroshio and I. tuberculatus were sampled monthly, and gonads in mesenteries were examined under a stereomicroscope. In Z. kuroshio, sizes of oocytes were estimated and in si

Microbiota and metabolic disturbance caused by sulfamethoxazole exposure in the scleractinian coral Pocillopora damicornis.

The overuse of antibiotics in aquaculture causes severe contamination in the coral reef environments, leading to the degradation of this vulnerable ecosystem. In the present study, 16S rRNA, transcriptomic and physiological approaches were employed to reveal the impacts of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), one of the common and widely distributed antibiotics in South China Sea, on the keystone sclerectinian coral Pocillopora damicornis holobiont. It was revealed that low-concentration SMX exposure (0.1 µg L-1) induced immune responses in coral hosts by activating the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signalin

Quantitative Detection of Active Vibrios Associated with White Plague Disease in Mussismilia braziliensis Corals.

Over recent decades several coral diseases have been reported as a significant threat to coral reef ecosystems causing the decline of corals cover and diversity around the world. The development of techniques that improve the ability to detect and quantify microbial agents involved in coral disease will aid in the elucidation of disease cause, facilitating coral disease detection and diagnosis, identification and pathogen monitoring, pathogen sources, vectors, and reservoirs. The genus Vibrio is known to harbor pathogenic strains to marine organisms. One of the best-characterized coral pathoge

Marine clean-up dives remove more than just marine litter.

Ecological transformation is underway on Caribbean reefs, including the flattening of structural complexity and shifts in species assemblages. As marine litter accumulates faster than it can be removed, marine organisms increasingly use litter for shelter and substrate. This study used commercial litter removal dives to assess the cryptofauna most affected by such activities. Following state and federal protocols, displaced taxa were recorded from marine litter retrieved during 18 dive events. Mobile organisms, stony corals, and soft corals were classified, with polychaete worms, Scleractinia

The Complete Genome Sequences of 7 Hypoplectrus species (Serranidae, Perciformes).

Species in the genus Hypoplectrus are found primarily in coral reefs in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico, particularly around Florida and the Bahamas. They are a popular choice for hobbyist saltwater aquariums. Members of this genus are simultaneous hermaphrodites, as they have both male and female sexual organs at the same time as an adult. We present the genome sequences of 7 species of Hypoplectrus. Raw read data and assembled genomes are available in Genbank.

Disease dynamics of Montipora white syndrome within Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii: distribution, seasonality, virulence, and transmissibility.

We report on an investigation of Montipora white syndrome (MWS), which is a coral disease reported from Hawaii, U.S.A., that results in tissue loss. Disease surveys of Montipora capitata within Kaneohe Bay (Oahu) found colonies that were affected by MWS on 9 reefs within 3 regions of Kaneohe Bay (south, central, north). Mean MWS prevalence ranged from 0.02 to 0.87% and average number of MWS cases per survey site ranged from 1 to 28 colonies. MWS prevalence and number of cases were significantly lower in the central region as compared to those in the north and south regions of Kaneohe Bay. Ther

Evaluating Candidatus Aquirickettsia rohweri gene expression upon nutrient enrichment in disease-susceptible Acropora cervicornis.

Ocean warming, disease, and pollution have contributed to global declines in coral abundances and diversity. In the Caribbean, corals previously dominated reefs, providing an architectural framework for diverse ecological habitats, but have significantly declined due to infectious disease and anthropogenic climate change. Key species like the coral Acropora cervicornis are critically endangered, prompting researchers to focus on scientific endeavors to identify factors influencing coral disease resistance and resilience. We previously showed that disease susceptibility, growth rates, and bleac

Emergence of a multi host biofilm forming opportunistic pathogen Staphylococcus sciuri D26 in coral Favites abdita.

Corals are hotspots of ocean microbial diversity and imbalance in the composition of coral associated microbes has been mostly correlated with the emergence of climate change driven diseases which affect the overall stability of the reef ecosystem. Coral sampling was performed by SCUBA diving at Palk Bay (latitude 9.271580, longitude 79.132203) south Indian coast. Among the 54 bacterial isolates, an isolate MGL-D26 showed comparatively high biofilm formation and was identified as Staphylococcus sciuri based on phylogenetic analysis. The production of exopolysaccharide (EPS) confirmed the forma

Color morphs of the coral, Acropora tenuis, show different responses to environmental stress and different expression profiles of fluorescent-protein genes.

Corals of the family Acroporidae are key structural components of reefs that support the most diverse marine ecosystems. Due to increasing anthropogenic stresses, coral reefs are in decline. Along the coast of Okinawa, Japan, three different color morphs of Acropora tenuis have been recognized for decades. These include brown (N morph), yellow green (G), and purple (P) forms. The tips of axial polyps of each morph exhibit specific fluorescence spectra. This attribute is inherited asexually, and color morphs do not change seasonally. In Okinawa Prefecture, during the summer of 2017, N and P mor

Clionapyrrolidine A--a metabolite from the encrusting and excavating sponge Cliona tenuis that kills coral tissue upon contact.

The Caribbean encrusting and excavating sponge Cliona tenuis successfully competes for space with reef corals by undermining, killing, and displacing live coral tissue at rates of up to 20 cm per year. The crude extract from this sponge, along with the more polar partitions, kills coral tissue and lowers the photosynthetic potential of coral zooxanthellae. We used a bioassay-guided fractionation of the extract to identify the compound(s) responsible. The crude extract, the aqueous partition, and compound 1, herein named clionapyrrolidine A [(-)-(5S)-2-imino-1-methylpyrrolidine-5-carboxylic aci

Probing a coral genome for components of the photoprotective scytonemin biosynthetic pathway and the 2-aminoethylphosphonate pathway.

Genome sequences of the reef-building coral, Acropora digitifera, have been decoded. Acropora inhabits an environment with intense ultraviolet exposure and hosts the photosynthetic endosymbiont, Symbiodinium. Acropora homologs of all four genes necessary for biosynthesis of the photoprotective cyanobacterial compound, shinorine, are present. Among metazoans, these genes are found only in anthozoans. To gain further evolutionary insights into biosynthesis of photoprotective compounds and associated coral proteins, we surveyed the Acropora genome for 18 clustered genes involved in cyanobacterial

Evolution of bright colours in animals: worlds of prohibition and oblivion.

Because the ability to hide in plain sight provides a major selective advantage to both prey and predator species, the emergence of the striking colouration of some animal species (such as many coral reef fish) represents an evolutionary conundrum that remains unsolved to date. Here I propose a framework by which conspicuous colours can emerge when the selective pressures for camouflage are relaxed (1) because camouflage is not essential under specific prey/predator conditions or (2) due to the impossibility of reducing the signal-to-background noise in the environment. The first case is found

Ciguatera fish poisoning in East Asia and southeast Asia.

In the coastal countries of East Asia and Southeast Asia, ciguatera should be common because of the extensive tropical and subtropical coral reefs along the coasts and in the neighboring seas with ciguatoxic fishes. An extensive search of journal databases, the Internet and the government websites was performed to identify all reports of ciguatera from the regions. Based on the official data and large published case series, the incidence of ciguatera was higher in the coastal cities (Hong Kong, Foshan, Zhongshan) of southern China than in Japan (Okinawa Prefecture). In Singapore, ciguatera app

Herbicides: a new threat to the Great Barrier Reef.

The runoff of pesticides (insecticides, herbicides and fungicides) from agricultural lands is a key concern for the health of the iconic Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Relatively low levels of herbicide residues can reduce the productivity of marine plants and corals. However, the risk of these residues to Great Barrier Reef ecosystems has been poorly quantified due to a lack of large-scale datasets. Here we present results of a study tracing pesticide residues from rivers and creeks in three catchment regions to the adjacent marine environment. Several pesticides (mainly herbicides) were dete

The relationship between individual characteristics and musculoskeletal disorders in tuna fishermen in Pelita Jaya Hamlet, West Seram Regency, in 2024.

BACKGROUND: Indonesia is a country with vast marine areas. It is also part of the world's coral reef triangle, which means that Indonesia has various types of coral reef species. This gives Indonesia a very strong maritime potential. Consequently, many Indonesians work as fishermen. In Pelita Jaya Hamlet, the majority of people work as tuna fishermen. Fishing is a job with high physical activity, so fishermen have the potential to experience musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorders are problems that occur in the human muscular and skeletal systems, characterized by pain, numbness,

Capillaria plectropomi n. sp. (Nematoda: Capillariidae), a new intestinal parasite of the leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus (Serranidae) off New Caledonia.

A new nematode species, Capillaria plectropomi n. sp. (Capillariidae), is described from the intestine of the leopard coral grouper Plectropomus leopardus (Lacepède) from coral reefs off New Caledonia. The new species, belonging to the subgenus Neocapillaria Moravec, 1987, differs from other congeneric species of this subgenus from marine fishes mainly in the length (168-186 μm), shape and structure of the spicule. It is characterized, in the male, by the presence of two well-developed dorsolateral caudal lobes, a pair of lateral papillae, a heavily sclerotized spicule with many rough transver

Occurrence and distribution of UV-filters and other anthropogenic contaminants in coastal surface water, sediment, and coral tissue from Hawaii.

The occurrence of UV-filters in the environment has raised concerns over potentially adverse impacts on corals. In this study, the concentrations of 13 UV-filters and 11 hormones were measured in surface seawater, sediment, and coral tissue from 19 sites in Oahu, Hawaii. At least eight UV-filters were detected in seawater, sediment, and coral tissue and total mass concentrations of all UV-filters were <750 ng L-1, <70 ng g-1 dry weight (dw), and <995 ng g-1 dw, respectively. Four UV-filters were detected in water, sediment, and coral tissue at detection frequencies of 63-100%, 56-91%, and 82-1
