Salinity is a major abiotic stress limiting cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) production, especially in areas where saltwater intrusion is present and brackish water is used for irrigation. This study evaluated salinity tolerance in cucumber cultivars across three growth stages-germination, seedling, and vegetative-using various concentrations of brackish water ranging from 0 to 31 dS·m-1. Germination results revealed distinct cultivar responses, with 'Diva' performing well and 'Striped Armenian' showing poor emergence. However, at the seedling and vegetative stages, 'Striped Armenian' consistentl

Resistance to cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) in melon (Cucumis melo L.) has been described in several exotic accessions and is controlled by a recessive resistance gene, cmv1, that encodes a vacuolar protein sorting 41 (CmVPS41). cmv1 prevents systemic infection by restricting the virus to the bundle sheath cells, preventing viral phloem entry. CmVPS41 from different resistant accessions carries two causal mutations, either a G85E change, found in Pat-81 and Freeman's cucumber, or L348R, found in PI161375, cultivar Songwhan Charmi (SC). Here, we analyzed the subcellular localization of CmVPS41 in

Dysregulation of dopamine (DA) levels is strongly associated with a range of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders, including Parkinson's disease. Limitations inherent to conventional analytical techniques have prompted the development of alternative methods, particularly electrochemical biosensors, which provide rapid response and real-time analysis. Among enzyme-based biosensors, peroxidases are notable for their catalytic efficiency and versatility. In this study, gherkin (Cucumis anguria L.) extract was immobilized onto titanate nanowires (TNWs) to fabricate four electrochemical bios

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is frequently detected in wastewater and sewage sludge, which may represent potential pathways of entry into agricultural environments. However, its effects on cultivated plants at trace concentrations remain unexplored. This study evaluated the effects of ASA (1-1000 ng·L-1) on germination and root growth of Daucus carota, Solanum lycopersicum, and Cucumis sativus, as well as cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in the root meristems of Allium cepa bulbs and biochemical responses associated with redox homeostasis in the roots of all four species. No significant adverse e

The textile dyeing industry is one of the main sectors contributing to environmental pollution, due to the generation of large amounts of wastewater loaded with dyes (ca. 2-50% of the initial amount of dyes used in the dye baths is lost), causing severe impacts on human health and the environment. In this context, an ecotoxicity testing battery was used to assess the acute toxicity and genotoxicity of the textile dyes Direct Black 38 (DB38; azo dye) and Reactive Blue 15 (RB15; copper phthalocyanine dye) on different trophic levels. Thus these dyes were tested using the following assays: Filter

This study examines whether the mycorrhizal helper bacterium (MHB) Alcaligenes faecalis can enhance the cadmium resistance conferred by the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Funneliformis mosseae in cucumbers. We evaluated plant growth, nutrient status, and rhizosphere microbiota across four treatments: non-inoculated control (CK), single inoculation of AMF (F), single inoculation of MHB (S), and co-inoculation of AMF and MHB (FS). Compared with the other three treatments, the FS treatment not only significantly increased the contents of N, P, and K in the plants, but also significantly incr

The growing presence of pharmaceutical residues in the environment has aroused worries about their possible buildup and accumulation in the food chain, particularly in edible plants. Conventional analytical methods frequently fail to selectively isolate and quantify trace amounts of these chemicals in complex plant matrices. This study introduces an optimized methodology for the analysis of pharmaceuticals in vegetables. The enhanced molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction (MISPE) approach investigates the extraction of selected pharmaceuticals, fenoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, ibuprofen

Effects of waterlogging (WL) stress and its mitigation by nitrate (NO3-) were investigated in a commercial cucumber hybrid line. WL resulted in a shift toward anaerobic metabolism in roots and development of adventitious roots (ARs). In WL stressed roots exodermal, extracellular H2O2 accumulation and protein nitration were detected. Shoot growth was retarded with signs of oxidative stress. Nitrate content decreased in both root and shoot. In the root WL upregulated several genes implicated in hypoxic response, including transcripts of CsRAP2.3, CsRBOHs and the CsHem3 phytoglobin genes. Fresh-cut produce is often contaminated with Escherichia coli O157, posing a significant risk to public health. This study investigated the synergistic inactivation effect and underlying mechanism of ultrasound (US) combined with Zanthoxylum schinifolium essential oil nanoemulsion (ZEO-NE) against E. coli O157:H7, and explored its potential application in fresh-cut cucumbers. The results demonstrated that combined treatment of US and ZEO-NE significantly reduced the viable counts of E. coli O157:H7 compared to treatment with US or ZEO-NE alone. In particular, US (20 kHz, 345 W/cm2) + ZEO-NE (1

The European "Green Deal" policies are shifting toward more sustainable and environmentally conscious agricultural practices, reducing the use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides. This implies exploring alternative strategies. One promising alternative to improve plant nutrition and reinforce plant defenses is the use of beneficial microorganisms in the rhizosphere, such as "Plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria and fungi". Despite the great abundance of iron (Fe) in the Earth's crust, its poor solubility in calcareous soil makes Fe deficiency a major agricultural issue worldwide. Among plant

In order to discover new antifungal agrochemicals that could have highly active and novel motifs, thirty-six new 2-acylaminocycloalkylsulfonamides (IV) were synthesized. Their structures were characterized and confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, MS, elemental analysis and X-ray single crystal diffraction. In vitro and in vivo activities against various Botrytis cinerea strains were evaluated. Bioassay results revealed that most of the title compounds exhibited excellent in vitro fungicidal activity, in which compound IV-26 showed the highest activity against sensitive, low-resistant, moderate-re

Arbutin induced suppression of angular leaf spot disease in cucumber resulting from lower populations of Pseudomonas syringae pv lachrymans in the infected tissues. This study provides insight into mechanisms that may potentially account for this effect. In the absence of the pathogen, exogenous arbutin-induced expression of PR1, the marker of salicylic acid signaling, increased the content of salicylic acid and modulated the cysteine pool. This suggested that arbutin promoted cucumber plants to a "primed" state. When challenged with the pathogen, the arbutin-treated plants showed strongly red

The accumulation of chitinase and its involvement in systemic acquired disease resistance was analyzed using acibenzolar-S-methyl and salicylic acid (SA). Resistance against scab (pathogen: Cladosporium cucumerinum) and the accumulation of chitinase were rapidly induced in cucumber plants after treatment with acibenzolar-S-methyl. In contrast, SA protected the plants from C. cucumerinum and the accumulation of chitinase was induced only on the treated leaves. The accumulation of chitinase in response to inoculation with the pathogen was induced more rapidly in cucumber plants previously treate

An imidazolium ionic-liquid-modified phenolic resin (ILPR) was synthesized using 3-aminophenol as a functional monomer, glyoxylic acid as a green cross-linker, and polyethylene glycol 6000 as a porogen. The obtained ILPR showed better extraction of benzoylurea plant hormones thidiazuron and forchlorfenuron than the unmodified phenolic resin because the imidazolium IL provides more interaction modes with the analytes. ILPR, as a tailored adsorbent for solid-phase extraction, was coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (ILPR‒SPE‒HPLC) for the simultaneous determination of thidiazuron

In this study, we first linked the signal molecule H2S with cucurbitacin C, which can cause the bitter taste of cucumber leaves and fruit, and specifically discuss its molecular mechanism. Cucurbitacin C (CuC), a triterpenoid secondary metabolite, enhances the resistance of cucumber plants to pathogenic bacteria and insect herbivores, but results in bitter-tasting fruits. CuC can be induced in some varieties of cucumber on exposure to plant stressors. The gasotransmitter hydrogen sulfide (H2S) participates in multiple physiological processes relating to plant stress resistance. This study focu

Recent listeriosis outbreaks and recalls associated with cantaloupes urge for studies to understand the mechanisms of cantaloupe contamination by Listeria monocytogenes. Postharvest practices such as washing and hydrocooling were suggested to facilitate the contamination of fresh fruits by human pathogens. This study assessed the potential of L. monocytogenes internalization into cantaloupes during dump tank washing and immersion-type hydrocooling in water contaminated with L. monocytogenes. The effect of cantaloupe cultivar, water temperature, and harvesting technique on L. monocytogenes inte

BACKGROUND: Colletotrichum lagenarium is an important plant-pathogenic fungus that causes anthracnose of cucumber, a disease that is widespread under both greenhouse and field cultivation. To find a promising method for the control of this disease, extracts of eight plants from China were screened in the study presented here.
RESULTS: The results showed that the extract of Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Presl had significantly greater inhibitory activity against C. lagenarium than the other seven plant extracts tested in vitro. At 5 days after inoculation in a potted seedling experiment, C. camphor
