Gambling as a precipitating factor in deaths by suicide in the National Violent Death Reporting System.

OBJECTIVES: The public health burden of gambling remains difficult to estimate, given the lack of relevant, available data. Death by suicide, represents a substantial and quantifiable public health cost. The current study reviews data from the National Violent Death Reporting System to detect cases where gambling was identified as a meaningful contextual factor to a death by suicide. STUDY DESIGN: This study is an exploratory content analysis. METHODS: We analysed narrative data from cases of death by suicide, collected from 2003 to 2020 recorded in the Restricted Access Data of the National

Quality of death certification based on the documented underlying cause of death: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The underlying cause of death (UCOD) documented in the death certificate is a cornerstone in the mortality data that has significant impact on national policies, health system, and socioeconomics. However, a wide range of inaccuracies have been reported worldwide and were linked to multiple factors, including sociodemographic development and lack of physician training. Hence, this study aimed to assess the quality of death certification by reviewing the reported UCOD in the death certificate and study the potential factors that might be associated with inaccuracies. METHODS: All i

Reporting Down syndrome on the death certificate for Alzheimer disease/unspecified dementia deaths.

BACKGROUND: Death certificates are crucial for understanding population health trends including the burden of disease mortality. Accurate reporting of causes of death on these records is necessary in order to implement adequate public health policies and fund disease research. While there is evidence that Alzheimer disease and unspecified dementia are prevalent among people with Down syndrome, a 2014 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) rule change instructing that Down syndrome should be reported as the underlying cause of death in instances when death occurred from Alzheimer dise

Sensitivity and Specificity of the National Death Index for Multiple Causes of Death in People With HIV.

OBJECTIVES: Inaccuracies in cause-of-death information in death certificates can reduce the validity of national death statistics and result in poor targeting of resources to reduce morbidity and mortality in people with HIV. Our objective was to measure the sensitivity, specificity, and agreement between multiple causes of deaths from death certificates obtained from the National Death Index (NDI) and causes determined by expert physician review. METHODS: Physician specialists determined the cause of death using information collected from the medical records of 50 randomly selected HIV-infec

Geopersonality of Preventable Death in the United States: Anger-Prone States and Opioid Deaths.

BACKGROUND: Opioid overdoses have reached epidemic levels in the United States and have clustered in Northeastern and "Rust Belt" states. Five Factor Model (FFM) personality traits also vary at the state level, with anger-prone traits clustered in the Northeast region. This study tested the hypothesis that state-level anger proneness would be associated with a greater increase in rates of opioid overdose death. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of state-level data on FFM traits, opioid overdose deaths, and other classes of preventable death. Robust mixed models tested whether change in r

Death on the Dome: Epidemiology of Recreational Deaths on Half Dome in Yosemite National Park.

INTRODUCTION: One of the most popular destinations in Yosemite National Park is Half Dome. Overcrowding at the turn of the 21st century prompted a restriction of hiker access to cable handrails to the summit without technical rock climbing equipment. Prior epidemiological study of Half Dome deaths is not known to the authors. Our goal was to identify trends among all Half Dome-related fatalities in Yosemite National Park. METHODS: Multimedia sources were searched for deaths involving the cable handrails, subdome, summit, technical climbing, or base jumping. Results are reported as mean±SD (ra

Causes of death of adults and elderly and healthcare-seeking before death in rural Bangladesh.

The health system of a country needs to be adjusted to patterns of morbidity and mortality to mitigate the income-erosion consequences of prolonged ill-health and premature death of adults. Population-based data on mortality by cause are a key to modifying the health system. However, these data are scarce, particularly for rural populations in developing countries. The objectives of this study were to determine the burdens of health due to major causes of death obtained from verbal autopsy of adults and the elderly and their healthcare-seeking patterns before death in a well-defined rural popu

On the Death of a Self-Integrating Organism: A Reply to "A Biophilosophical Approach to the Determination of Brain Death".

To advance the debate over the brain death (BD) criteria, Sulmasy and colleagues have recently proposed that the BD criteria can be saved if three things are done. First, they suggest that the philosophical rationale used to justify the BD criteria should be changed to acknowledge that the human body is self-integrated and not integrated by the brain. They then propose that this self-integration is lost when the total functioning of the brain, especially the functioning of the hypothalamus, is lost. Finally, they affirm that medical criteria for BD should be expanded to include a diagnosis of

A matter of new life and cell death: programmed cell death in the mammalian ovary.

BACKGROUND: The mammalian ovary is a unique organ that displays a distinctive feature of cyclic changes throughout the entire reproductive period. The estrous/menstrual cycles are associated with drastic functional and morphological rearrangements of ovarian tissue, including follicular development and degeneration, and the formation and subsequent atrophy of the corpus luteum. The flawless execution of these reiterative processes is impossible without the involvement of programmed cell death (PCD). MAIN TEXT: PCD is crucial for efficient and careful clearance of excessive, depleted, or obsol

Inconsistency between the Circulatory and the Brain Criteria of Death in the Uniform Determination of Death Act.

The Uniform Determination of Death Act (UDDA) provides that "an individual who has sustained either (1) irreversible cessation of circulatory and respiratory functions or (2) irreversible cessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brain stem, is dead." We show that the UDDA contains two conflicting interpretations of the phrase "cessation of functions." By one interpretation, what matters for the determination of death is the cessation of spontaneous functions only, regardless of their generation by artificial means. By the other, what matters is the cessation of both sponta

The PURPOSe cause of death study in stillbirths and neonatal deaths in India and Pakistan: A review.

The PURPOSe study was a prospective, observational study conducted in India and Pakistan to determine the cause of death for stillbirths and preterm neonatal deaths, using clinical data together with minimally invasive tissue sampling (MITS) and the histologic and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) evaluation of fetal/neonatal tissues and the placenta. After evaluating all available data, an independent panel chose a maternal, a placental and a fetal/neonatal cause of death. Here, we summarise the major results. Among the most important findings were that most stillbirths were caused by fetal asp
