Parotid gland atrophy in patients with chronic trigeminal nerve denervation.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Trigeminal nerve injury or dysfunction is associated with denervation atrophy of muscles innervated by the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the association between chronic CN V denervation and parotid gland atrophy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six patients with chronic masticator muscle atrophy were retrospectively identified and evaluated for the presence of ipsilateral parotid gland atrophy. Twenty-six age-matched control subjects with no clinical or imaging evidence of chronic masticator space atrophy were also id

Functional effects of cardiac sympathetic denervation in neurogenic orthostatic hypotension.

BACKGROUND: Diseases characterized by neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (NOH), such as Parkinson disease (PD) and pure autonomic failure (PAF), are associated with cardiac sympathetic denervation, as reflected by low myocardial concentrations of 6-[(18)F]fluorodopamine-derived radioactivity. We studied the impact of such denervation on cardiac chronotropic and inotropic function. METHODS: Cardiac inotropic function was assessed by the pre-ejection period index and the systolic time ratio index in response to the directly acting beta-adrenoceptor agonist, isoproterenol, and to the indirectly

Cardiac sympathetic denervation is correlated with Parkinsonian midline motor symptoms.

BACKGROUND: In patients with Parkinson's disease (PD), myocardial (123)I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) uptake is significantly reduced even without apparent autonomic abnormalities. Several studies have suggested that the disease duration, severity and specific phenotype influence MIBG uptake in PD. The objective of this study was to investigate prospectively the relationship between the myocardial MIBG uptake and the Parkinsonian motor handicap in patients with minimal to severe disability. METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with PD who underwent MIBG scintigraphy and clinical assessments off med

Dobutamine stress test unmasks cardiac sympathetic denervation in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac uptake of [(123)I]metaiodobenzyl guanidine (MIBG) is reduced in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the cardiac sympathetic abnormality associated with this reduction is unclear. To unmask this abnormality in PD patients we examined the functional consequences of cardiac beta-receptor activation. METHODS: Cardiovascular responses to stepwise administration of the beta1-receptor agonist, dobutamine (DOB), were assessed in 25 PD patients and 12 age-matched controls. Changes in blood pressure were compared to determine the optimal dose at which to detect denervati

Modification of motoneuron size after partial denervation in neonatal rats.

Our previous studies have shown that partial denervation of extensor digitorum longus muscle (EDL) in the rat at 3 days of age causes an increase in the activity of the intact motoneurons. The originally phasic pattern of activity of EDL became tonic after partial denervation. These modifications of motoneuron activity were associated with the change in the phenotype of the muscle from fast to slow contracting and with a conversion of the muscle fibres from a fast to a slow type. The present study investigates whether the size of the cell body of the active EDL motoneurons change in parallel w

Topical apraclonidine testing discloses pupillary sympathetic denervation in diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic denervation is common in diabetes mellitus (DM). Pupillary sympathetic denervation (PSD) has been found in Horner syndrome following instillation of apraclonidine 0.5%. We have applied this technique to investigate the prevalence of PSD in DM. METHODS: Apraclonidine 0.5% was instilled in the eyes of 50 patients with DM and 30 age-matched and gender-matched subjects without DM (control subjects). Pupil diameters (PD) were measured before and 60 minutes after instillation. The duration of DM and the degree of diabetic retinopathy (DR) were recorded for each patient. RESUL

Cardiac sympathetic denervation in Ross syndrome demonstrated by MIBG-SPECT.

We investigated cardiac sympathetic innervation by metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) imaging in a patient with tonic pupils, loss of tendon reflexes, and segmental anhidrosis (Ross syndrome). Despite normal cardiovascular reflex tests, we observed a reduced global myocardial MIBG uptake as well as a regional uptake defect over the posterolateral cardiac territory indicating left ventricular peripheral sympathetic denervation. MIBG imaging seems to be a useful noninvasive diagnostic method for detection of early--possibly subclinical--cardiac autonomic impairment in Ross syndrome and provides furt

Renal denervation prevents and reverses hyperinsulinemia-induced hypertension in rats.

Experiments were performed to evaluate the role of the renal nerves in hyperinsulinemia-induced hypertension. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were made hyperinsulinemic by insulin infusion via osmotic minipumps implanted subcutaneously (3.0 mU/kg per minute for 6 weeks). Rats with vehicle infusion served as controls. Bilateral renal denervation was performed either at the beginning of or 4 weeks after insulin infusion. The systolic blood pressure was measured by the tail-cuff method twice a week. Food and water intake and urine flow were measured daily. The results showed that sustained insulin infus

Effects of sinoaortic baroreceptor denervation on depletion-induced salt appetite.

This study examined the effects of denervation of the carotid sinus and aortic arch baroreceptors on sodium depletion-induced salt appetite in rats. Depletion of extracellular fluid began with two injections of furosemide (10 mg/kg sc), 30 min apart, and removal of all ambient sodium from the cages. Water and sodium-deficient chow were available overnight. The next morning, access to 0.3 M NaCl was provided, and intakes of water and saline were measured every 30 min for 2 h and again at 24 h. Three such tests were administered. Groups of sham and sinoaortic baroreceptor-denervated (SAD) rats h

Dystrophic changes in mdx muscle regenerating from denervation and devascularization.

The regenerative capacity of young mdx muscle after a denervating and devascularizing injury (DD) was examined in extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and compared with that of age-matched control mouse EDL. DD of the right EDL was produced at the age approximating the onset of dystrophy in the mdx model, and mice recovered for 2 weeks. Contralateral unoperated EDLs from mdx and control mice served as internal controls for histopathology, myofiber cross-sectional area (CSA), and ultrastructure of fiber regeneration in DD-EDL. Mdx DD-EDL were composed of small, uniformly mature myofibers with mostly

Phrenic output changes due to progressive airway denervation in rabbits.

The experiments were performed with thirteen anaesthetized rabbits breathing spontaneously through the larynx. Phrenic output was measured during tidal respiration in control conditions and in the course of progressive denervation of the laryngeal and tracheobronchial compartments. We have analysed changes in amplitude and the rate of rise of the integrated phrenic neurogram as well as the changes in TI, TE, TT and f of the respiratory timing after superior laryngeal nerves (SLN-s) section, section of the recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLN-s) and step-wise complete midcervical vagotomy. Denervation of peripheral chemoreceptors decreases breathing movements in fetal sheep.

The role of the peripheral chemoreceptors in the control of fetal breathing movements has not been fully defined. To determine whether denervation of the peripheral chemoreceptors affects fetal breathing movements, we studied 14 chronically catheterized fetal sheep from 120 to 138 days of gestation. In seven fetuses the chemoreceptors were denervated by bilateral section of the vagus and carotid sinus nerves; in seven others, sham operations were performed. We compared several variables during two study periods: 0-5 and 6-13 days after operation. In the denervated fetuses there were significan

Muscular dystrophy contrasted with denervation: different mechanisms underlying spontaneous fibrillations.

The data reviewed in this paper indicate that spontaneous fibrillations do not involve a cholinergic mechanism since non-depolarizing anticholinesterase drugs such as Mestinon fail to increase spontaneous fibrillations in denervated muscle. Fibrillation potentials are related to the changes in electrical properties of the membrane of denervated muscle fibres which lead to the appearance of spontaneous subthreshold depolarizations, sometimes triggering a propagated potential. Fibrillations seem to appear in cycles and this may depend on the depression of spontaneous depolarization by muscle act

Defect of the ala nasi following trigeminal denervation. Case report.

Trophic ulceration of the nose is a rare complication occurring in patients with trigeminal anaesthesia. The etiology is not clear, but self-inflicted injuries to an anaesthetic region are considered to play an important part. The authors' experience with three cases indicates that substitution with skin from the affected area of the face will not give a lasting result. It seems probable that only skin with an intact nerve supply can provide a permanent replacement for skin lost in the dystrophic process. This means that a local flap innervated from a non-affected part of the face would offer

Olfactory denervation: its biological and behavioral effects in infant rats.

Two-week-old infant rats were treated with intranasal ZnSO4 and compared with littlemate controls 24 hr later. When infants were returned to their mother and littermates, those with olfactory deficits lost weight, had reduced cardiac and respiratory rates and lower body temperatures, and showed increased locomotor behavior in an unfamiliar test area. Subsequent experiments showed that in the absence of the mother and also in isolation, differences between ZnSO4-treated and control infants involved fewer systems were less marked, and presented different patterns. Isolated infants given oral ZnS

Autonomic control of the vasculature in CKD: leveraging renal denervation.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) confers disproportionate high risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Hypertension remains both a driver and consequence of progressive renal dysfunction. Beyond sodium retention, volume expansion, and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system activation, increasing evidence supports a CKD phenotype of sustained sympathetic activation coupled with impaired autonomic buffering and altered vascular responsiveness. Baroreflex sensitivity is reduced across pre-dialysis and dialysis cohorts and is linked to arterial stiffening and vascular calcification, changes tha

A Zonal Denervation Approach to Surgical Management of Facial Synkinesis.

BACKGROUND: While selective neurectomy has emerged as a surgical adjunct for patients with facial synkinesis to eliminate aberrantly regenerated axons, postoperative outcomes have been mixed. OBJECTIVE: To understand how a zonal denervation approach to selective neurectomy targeting a broader elimination of unwanted neural elements can affect periocular and perioral movements among patients with facial synkinesis. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed patients who underwent zonal denervation from July 2023 through August 2024. Pre- and postoperative photographs were analyzed in a blinded fash

Durability of wrist denervation for osteoarthritis: a multicentre outcome study.

INTRODUCTION: Traditional surgical treatments for wrist osteoarthritis, such as arthrodesis or arthroplasty, are invasive and irreversibly compromise joint motion. Wrist denervation offers a less invasive alternative aimed at pain relief while preserving mobility. However, its durability remains uncertain. The aim of the study is to evaluate whether wrist denervation prevents further osteoarthritis-related wrist surgery in the mid- to long-term. METHODS: This prospective multicentre study included patients with symptomatic wrist osteoarthritis who underwent wrist denervation after failed non-

Renal denervation for resistant hypertension: A review of current literature.

Resistant hypertension is defined by persistently elevated blood pressure (BP) despite being treated with three or more antihypertensive medications including a diuretic, leading to an increased risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. It presents a substantial global health challenge, impacting about 10 % of individuals with hypertension. Renal denervation (RDN) has come up as a promising interventional strategy to address this condition by modulating the renal sympathetic nervous system. This review article explores the mechanisms underlying RDN, its historical evolution, recent procedur
