Potentially Preventable Hospitalisation Related to Severe Third Molar Disease: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: One of the most common oral surgery procedures performed in dentistry is the removal of third molar teeth (3M). Complications of both retention and removal of third molars are associated with potentially preventable hospitalisations (PPH). This study aims to systematically review the published literature to identify demographics, aetiology, incidence, associated factors, length of hospital stay (LOS) and variables influencing the outcomes of PPH arising from 3M. Methods: An electronic literature search was performed using Medline and Embase via Ovid in May 2024, and rele

Dental considerations and recommendations in Eisenmenger syndrome: A report of an unusual paediatric case.

BACKGROUND: Eisenmenger syndrome (ES) is a heart cyanotic condition characterised by elevated pulmonary vascular resistance and an intra-cardiac right-to-left shunting of blood through a systemic-to-pulmonary circulation connection. Affected children usually exhibit severe hypoxia, clubbing of fingers/toes, haemoptysis, anaemia, and organ damage. CASE REPORT: During autumn 2015, the patient and her parents arrived at the paediatric dentistry clinic. The patient presented with the main complaint of generalised inflamed gingival tissues, severely protruded upper incisors, and evident abnormal m

Influence of the restoration quality on the success of pulpotomy treatment: a preliminary retrospective study.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical status of pulpotomy treatment with calcium hydroxide and to correlate it with the quality of restoration of the treated teeth. Patients were retrieved from the files of the Operative Dentistry clinics (FOUFPel) between 1996 and 2000. Twenty-two patients were recalled, which had 23 teeth treated with pulpotomy due to exposure by caries. Seven anterior and 16 posterior teeth composed the evaluated group, being all restored with composite resin. The age varied from 15-50 years (mean 23.9) and the follow-up mean was 34.52 months. Clinical and radi

Influence of operator experience on the bond strength of etch-and-rinse, self-etch, and universal adhesive systems to dentin.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of operator experience on the bonding performance of four adhesive strategies: three- and two-step etch-and-rinse (ER), and two- and one-step self-etch (SE) systems to dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-six caries-free molars were divided according to the operator experience (3YG: third-year undergraduate students; 5YG: fifth-year undergraduate students; 1YR: first-year residents in Operative and Restorative Dentistry) and four adhesive systems. The occlusal third of each crown was removed to obtain a flat, mid-coronal dentin surface, which was standard

Smart Diagnostics: Hierarchical Deep Learning of Acoustic Emission Signals for Early Crack Detection in Zirconia Dental Structures.

Monolithic zirconia restorations are frequently affected by the unnoticed growth of subcritical cracks, a failure process that is not captured by traditional imaging methods like radiographs and ultrasounds in sophisticated dental architectures. To address this evaluative inadequacy, this research introduces a hierarchical deep learning framework for microcrack detection and spatial localization. We promote a hierarchical deep learning system that integrates Acoustic Emission (AE) detection alongside signal processing. Raw AE signals utilized during dynamic loading are enhanced via Kalman filt

Integrated Genetic Networks and Epigenetic Regulation inTooth Development and Maturation.

Tooth development or odontogenesis is a complex morphogenetic process that requires tightly regulated interactions between the oral epithelium and mesenchyme of neural crest origin. In this narrative review, we compile existing knowledge regarding gene regulatory networks and epigenetic factors throughout tooth development from initiation to eruption. Signaling between the epithelium and mesenchyme is mediated by four conserved pathways-Wnt/β-catenin, bone morphogenetic protein (BMP), fibroblast growth factor (FGF), and Sonic hedgehog (Shh)-which operate iteratively and interact through extens

Investigation of the effect of thyroid collar, radiation safety glasses, and lead apron on radiation dose in cone beam CT.

OBJECTIVES: Due to the increasing use of cone-beam CT (CBCT) in dentistry and considering the effects of radiation on radiosensitive organs, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of shielding on absorbed dose of eyes, thyroid, and breasts in scans conducted with different parameters using 2 different fields of view (FOV). METHODS: Dose measurements were calculated on a tissue-equivalent female phantom by repeating each scanning parameter 3 times and placing at least 2 thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) on each organ, with the averages then taken. The same CBCT scans were perform

An automatic tracking method to measure the mandibula movement during real time MRI.

Mandibular movement is complex and individual due to variations in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Consequently, patient-centered dentistry should incorporate patients' specific anatomy and condylar function in treatment planning. Real-time magnetic resonance imaging (rt-MRI) visualizes relevant structures and tracks mandibular movement. However, current assessments rely on qualitative observations or time-consuming manual tracking, lacking reliability. This study developed an automatic tracking algorithm for mandibular movement in rt-MRI using least mean square registration (LMS) and compa

Diet's Cariogenicity and Healthfulness Index (DCHI) - A Novel, Comprehensive Index for Children.

BACKGROUND: Realistic and tailored dietary advice plays a vital role in Preventive Dentistry. An appropriate diet analysis forms the basis for precise dietary advice. Analysis of diet for its cariogenicity is a complex process. Performing a meaningful diet analysis is a challenge in routine clinical practice. Currently, very few tools are available for clinicians to assess children's diet relating to caries risk. The current scientific paper presents a novel index that assesses the cariogenicity and healthfulness of a child's diet objectively and guides the professional to achieve pragmatic di

The COVID-19 pandemic and dentistry: the clinical, legal and economic consequences - part 1: clinical.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the virus which causes COVID-19, is highly contagious. Dentistry is a high-risk profession for occupational virus transmission because of the close proximity of the operator to the patient during treatment and the procedural generation of aerosols. The impact on the provision of dental care has been profound, with routine care restricted or paused for a period around the world. There have been adverse consequences for dental education and clinical research. Emergency and urgent care provisions have generally proceeded. However, even

Environmental sustainability and travel within the dental practice.

A significant amount of dentistry's carbon emissions originate from travel (64.5%). Dental-associated travel affects air quality, releasing over 443 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 22 tonnes of particulate matter (PM2.5) annually. This reduction in air quality reduces over 325 quality-adjusted life years (QALY) per year. Wider health impacts associated with noise and traffic incidents doubles the impact on health in QALYs. Dental procedures that require shorter appointment times have disproportionately higher emissions due to patient travel. The dental team can reduce appointment times by

Periodontal and Restorative Treatment of Gingival Recession Associated with Non-Carious Cervical Lesions: Case Study.

The association between the presence of gingival recession and non-carious cervical lesions is a common finding in dentistry. These diseases have multifactorial etiology and the treatment should be multidisciplinary. Although traditionally the majority of professionals treat non-carious cervical lesions only with conventional restorative procedures, in most cases a combination of periodontal and restorative treatments provides the best functional and esthetic results. Thus, the objective of this case report was to present a new option for treatment, which consists of a subepithelial connective

Dental disease in type 3 Von Willebrand disease: a neglected problem.

Type 3 Von Willebrand disease (VWD) is a rare, severe, autosomal recessive bleeding disorder. In our institution, we follow 17 children with type 3 VWD. We have observed a high prevalence of dental disease in these patients prompting us to undertake a retrospective review of our cohort of patients with type 3 VWD to catalogue the extent of their dental disease. Sixteen of these patients have been assessed by our dentistry department. Five children have undergone minor dental procedures (e.g. restorations, stainless steel crowns) and seven major procedures (e.g. dental extractions, pulpotomies

Cleanability of dental instruments--implications of residual protein and risks from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Cleaning of dental instruments is the first line of control in reducing the adherent bioburden. The threat of vCJD and the difficulty in removing prion protein has provided a new challenge for cleaning surgical and dental instruments. Prion proteins are also more resistant to many disinfection and sterilisation techniques. A number of different methods are currently available in primary care for cleaning instruments including manual washing, ultrasonic cleaners and washer disinfectors. Manual cleaning of dental instruments is time-consuming, introduces operator error and the risk of puncture w

Concomitant oral findings in children after cardiac transplant.

Heart transplantations have been performed in the Centre for Paediatric Heart Surgery at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen (Germany) since 1988. For further consultation and therapy, some affected children subsequently present at the Polyclinic for Paediatric Dentistry. In all these cases problematic oral findings were diagnosed. It was the aim of this study to describe the different findings and to create a concept for avoiding them in the future. Altogether, 10 children with cardiac transplants (three girls, seven boys) were examined and, where necessary, treated. At the time they firs

Thyroid radiation dose during panoramic and cephalometric dental x-ray examinations.

Radiation exposure from panoramic equipment can be reduced significantly by use of smaller film, adjustment of the beam height to the height of the smaller film, and careful positioning of patients. These techniques have no adverse effect on the quality of the diagnostic information needed in dentistry. In addition to describing methods of reducing exposures from panoramic machines, this study demonstrates that the use of a barrier collar during static, cephalometric examinations can appreciably reduce thyroid exposure. Since the objective is to obtain diagnostic information from the film with
