BACKGROUND: The relation between maternal mental health and breastfeeding is complex, with breastfeeding often associated with improved well-being.
OBJECTIVE: This study investigates associations between breastfeeding outcomes and psychological well-being in women with traumatic birth experience (TBE).
METHODS: This exploratory secondary analysis utilized data from the PERCEIVE randomized controlled trial, which assessed the effectiveness of early eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms after TBE. Women with self-reported

From Plasters to Heart Surgery - An Insight into the Psychosocial Care of Children and Young People Who Have Been Victims of (Technology-Assisted) Sexualised Violence Sexual abuse in childhood - particularly in its technology-assisted form - constitutes a profound psychosocial burden with far-reaching individual and systemic consequences. Affected children and youth often exhibit somatic, emotional, cognitive, and social symptoms of varying intensity. Child protection, psychosocial stabilization, and trauma-specific therapy must be understood as graduated, interlinked components. Trauma-focuse

Child sexual abuse (CSA) impacts victims in immediate and long-lasting ways, often resulting in traumatic symptomatology. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is an effective treatment to address trauma symptoms. Despite growing research on the efficacy of EMDR therapy, no review has been conducted on EMDR's treatment of trauma related to CSA. This scoping review seeks to explore the literature on EMDR as a treatment for CSA, including outcomes measured related to efficacy and considerations and implications related to the use of EMDR with this population. We recently reported that individuals at ultra-high risk for the development of psychosis (UHR) have elevated levels of chronic stress and deficits in the putative protective factors self-esteem, social support and coping skills. The aim of the present study was to assess endocrine and autonomic responses to acute psychosocial stress and their associations with self-ratings of stress and protective factors in individuals at UHR. Twenty-one patients diagnosed with an "at risk mental state" (12 male, 9 female; mean age 20.8 ± 3.27) and 21 healthy age and gender matched community controls were ex

Burn injury is often a devastating event with long-term physical and psychosocial effects. Burn scars after deep dermal injury are cosmetically disfiguring and force the scarred person to deal with an alteration in body appearance. In addition, the traumatic nature of the burn accident and the painful treatment may induce psychopathological responses. Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which are prevalent in 13-23% and 13-45% of cases, respectively, have been the most common areas of research in burn patients. Risk factors related to depression are pre-burn depression and fe

Following collective traumas, the need for mental health services to become accessible to a large number of people in a short time not only requires the effectiveness of psychological interventions but also their accessibility. Collective experiences such as natural disasters, wars, forced migration, epidemics and incidents of social violence pose a significant risk to public mental health because they affect multiple individuals simultaneously. Therefore, along with individual therapy, group therapy is becoming increasingly important in making mental health services accessible to more people

Background: Nonpharmacologic interventions have known benefits for managing chronic pain, particularly for conditions such as fibromyalgia, and are included in clinical guidelines. However, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) has not been established as a routine clinical practice for pain management. Objective: To systematically review the efficacy of EMDR for managing chronic pain. Methods: A search was conducted to identify randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and observational studies by using the keywords "EMDR" and "chronic pain." Information was collected on the study popu

Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology : the official journal for the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, American Psychological Association, Division 532016eng
Child and adolescent trauma exposure is prevalent, with trauma exposure-related symptoms, including posttraumatic stress, depressive, and anxiety symptoms often causing substantial impairment. This article updates the evidence base on psychosocial treatments for child and adolescent trauma exposure completed for this journal by Silverman et al. (2008). For this review, we focus on 37 studies conducted during the seven years since the last review. Treatments are grouped by overall treatment family (e.g., cognitive behavioral therapy), treatment modality (e.g., individual vs. group), and treatme

Since the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was introduced in DSM-III in 1980, a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches have been developed to address the specific problems and needs of traumatized patients. Successful treatment of PTSD requires a well thought-out therapeutic attitude. The therapist must find a well-balanced position between over-identification and turning away out of helplessness. A sensation-seeking attitude should be avoided as should the danger of vicarious traumatisation. In many instances, PTSD can not be treated sufficiently by psychotherapy alone: a co

OBJECTIVE: to explore the possibility of using eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) to treat women who have experienced post-traumatic stress after childbirth.
DESIGN: the pilot study consisted of a 'before and after' treatment design combined with follow-up measurements 1-3 years after EMDR treatment. Quantitative data from questionnaires (Traumatic Event Scale [TES]) were collected. In addition, qualitative data from individual interviews with the participants were collected as well as data from the psychotherapist's treatment notes of the EMDR treatment sessions.

Virtual Reality technology offers great possibilities for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy of fear of public speaking: Clients can be exposed to virtual fear-triggering stimuli (exposure) and are able to role-play in virtual environments, training social skills to overcome their fear. Usually, prototypical audience behavior (neutral, social and anti-social) serves as stimulus in virtual training sessions, although there is significant lack of theoretical basis on typical audience behavior. The study presented deals with the design of a realistic virtual presentation scenario. An audience (consisti

BACKGROUND: Pilot research has suggested that D-cycloserine (DCS) enhances treatment outcomes for anxiety disorders when employed as an adjunct to exposure therapy (ET). The aim of this study was to determine whether 50 mg of DCS enhances ET for social anxiety disorder (SAD) according to a comprehensive set of symptom and life impairment measures.
METHODS: In a randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial, we administered 50 mg of DCS or placebo in combination with ET to 56 participants who met primary diagnosis for SAD.
RESULTS: Participants administered DCS reported greater improvement

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) has been shown to be an effective treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In this study, the authors evaluated the effectiveness and physiological effects of EMDR in police officers involved with on-duty shootings and who had PTSD. Six police officers involved with on-duty shootings and subsequent delayed-onset PTSD were evaluated with standard measures, the Posttraumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale, and high-resolution brain single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging before and after treatment. All police officers sh

This study examined the effectiveness of individual high-density exposure (2-3 weeks, all day) for panic disorder with agoraphobia (PDAG). Participants were 416 unselected patients with a primary diagnosis of PDAG who were treated by 52 therapists in 3 outpatient clinics of the Christoph-Dornier Foundation of Clinical Psychology in Germany. Results 6 weeks after the end of therapy and at the 1-year follow-up showed highly significant reductions in anxiety symptoms, anxious cognition, agoraphobic avoidance, general symptomatology, and depressive symptoms. Results did not differ significantly be

While there is mounting evidence that the concept of anxiety sensitivity (AS) is linked to the expression of anxiety (specifically, panic), there has been little research comparing the efficacy of interoceptive exposure alone with interoceptive exposure coupled with cognitive restructuring among high AS participants. The present investigation addressed this issue in a sample of high anxiety-sensitive college students (scores above 29 on the Anxiety Sensitivity Index). Participants were randomly assigned to receive either five consecutive trials of voluntary hyperventilation or five consecutive

Thirty-two patients suffering from panic disorder with agoraphobia were treated with repeated hyperventilation provocations and respiratory training, followed by exposure in vivo. The treatment was evaluated with a comprehensive set of outcome measures, including self-report questionnaires, a multitask behavioural avoidance test and continuous monitoring of panic. The treatment was found effective for the majority of patients in diminishing the frequency of panic attacks and agoraphobic avoidance. The clinical relevance of the treatment effect was evidenced by the considerable number of patien

The features of panic and anxiety in the natural environment were studied by prospective self-monitoring in 39 patients with chronic agoraphobia and panic disorder. Panics overlapped greatly with anxiety episodes but were more intense. Panics occurred more often in public places than did anxiety episodes, but had otherwise similar symptom profile, time of occurrence, and antecedents. Most panics surged out of a pre-existing plateau of tonic anxiety which lasted most of the day. Spontaneous panics were less frequent than situational panics and occurred more often at home but were otherwise simi

The fact that unadaptive neurotic anxiety response habits are learned makes it necessary for the stimulus antecedents to be accurately defined in every case in order to plan effective treatment. This requirement has been frequently neglected in recent years that have witnessed a growing tendency to apply common treatments to cases with common labels, e.g. agoraphobia. This paper argues for the desirability of accurate individual diagnosis, and illustrates its benefits in unique cases and also in respect of three common syndromes--agoraphobia, panic attacks and depression.

In a controlled outcome study of phobias, 111 adult patients (69% women, 31% men) received a course of 26 weekly treatment sessions consisting of (1) behavior therapy and imipramine hydrochloride (2) behavior therapy and placebo, or (3) supportive psychotherapy and imipramine. Patients were classified as agoraphobic, mixed phobic, or simple phobic. The great majority of patients in all groups showed moderate to marked global improvement (70% to 86%, depending on rater). In agoraphobics and mixed phobics (both groups experiencing spontaneous panic attacks), imipramine was significantly superior

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of auditory feedback in a VR system planned for clinical use and to address the different factors that should be taken into account in building a bimodal virtual environment (VE). We conducted an experiment in which we assessed spatial performances in agoraphobic patients and normal subjects comparing two kinds of VEs, visual alone (Vis) and auditory-visual (AVis), during separate sessions. Subjects were equipped with a head-mounted display coupled with an electromagnetic sensor system and immersed in a virtual town. Their task was to lo
