Sodium nitroprusside modulates oxidative and nitrosative processes in Lycopersicum esculentum L. under drought stress.

Sodium nitroprusside mediates drought stress responses in tomatoes by modulating nitrosative and oxidative pathways, highlighting the interplay between nitric oxide, hydrogen sulfide, and antioxidant systems for enhanced drought tolerance. While nitric oxide (NO), a signalling molecule, enhances plant tolerance to abiotic stresses, its precise contribution to improving tomato tolerance to drought stress (DS) through modulating oxide-nitrosative processes is not yet fully understood. We aimed to examine the interaction of NO and nitrosative signaling, revealing how sodium nitroprusside (SNP) co

Response of seed yield and biochemical traits of Eruca sativa Mill. to drought stress in a collection study.

Drought tolerance is a complex trait in plants that involves different biochemical mechanisms. During two years of study (2019-2020), the responses of 64 arugula genotypes to drought stress were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications under field conditions. Several metabolic traits were evaluated, i.e. relative water content, photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll and carotenoids), proline, malondialdehyde, enzymatic antioxidants (catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and peroxidase), total phenolic and flavonoid contents and seed yield. On average, the drought stress

Genome-wide association study of drought tolerance traits in sugar beet germplasms at the seedling stage.

Introduction: Sugar beets are an important crop for global sugar production. Intense drought and the increasing lack of water resources pose a great threat to sugar beet cultivation. It is a priority to investigate favourable germplasms and functional genes to improve the breeding of drought tolerant plants. Methods: Thus, in this study, 328 sugar beet germplasms were used in a genome-wide association study (GWAS) to identify single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and candidate genes associated with drought tolerance. Results: The results showed that under drought stress (9% PEG-6000), t

Potato Stu-miR398b-3p Negatively Regulates Cu/Zn-SOD Response to Drought Tolerance.

One of the main impacts of drought stress on plants is an excessive buildup of reactive oxygen species (ROS). A large number of ·OH, highly toxic to cells, will be produced if too much ROS is not quickly cleared. At the heart of antioxidant enzymes is superoxide dismutase (SOD), which is the first antioxidant enzyme to function in the active oxygen scavenging system. To shield cells from oxidative injury, SOD dismutation superoxide anion free radicals generate hydrogen peroxide and molecule oxygen. Cu/Zn SOD is a kind of SOD antioxidant enzyme that is mostly found in higher plants' cytoplasm a

Novel sources of drought tolerance in sorghum landraces revealed via the analyses of genotype-by-environment interactions.

Globally, sorghum is the fifth most important crop, which is used for food, feed and fuel. However, its production and productivity are severely limited by various stresses, including drought. Hence, this study aimed to determine the responses of different drought-tolerance related traits in the Ethiopian sorghum germplasm through multi-environment field trials, thereby identifying novel sources of germplasm that can be used for breeding the crop for drought-tolerance. Three hundred twenty sorghum landraces and four improved varieties were grown at three sites within drought-prone areas (Melka

Importance of water level management for peatland outflow water quality in the face of climate change and drought.

The impact of different climate scenarios, drought, and water level management on the outflow water quality of peatlands has been investigated. A mesocosm experiment has been conducted within climate control chambers to simulate current (2016-2019 real-time) and future representative concentration pathway (RCP) climate scenarios (RCP 2.6, 4.5 and 8.5). To assess the efficiency of a management strategy for improving peatland water quality, water level adjustment was applied to half of the system at the same time for each climate scenario. Furthermore, the mesocosm experienced the 2018 European

Sulfur dioxide improves drought tolerance through activating Ca2+ signaling pathways in wheat seedlings.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and drought are two important co-occurring abiotic stresses affecting the growth and productivity of plants. Here, we will investigate the role of Ca2+ in regulating antioxidant defense during drought or SO2/drought stress, and the effect of SO2 pretreatment on the physiological response of wheat seedlings to drought stress. The results showed that exogenous Ca2+ increased the activities of SOD, CAT and POD, and reduced the contents of H2O2 and MDA in drought-treated wheat seedlings, suggesting Ca2+ could improve drought tolerance by promoting antioxidant defense in plants

Trehalose increases tomato drought tolerance, induces defenses, and increases resistance to bacterial wilt disease.

Ralstonia solanacearum causes bacterial wilt disease, leading to severe crop losses. Xylem sap from R. solanacearum-infected tomato is enriched in the disaccharide trehalose. Water-stressed plants also accumulate trehalose, which increases drought tolerance via abscisic acid (ABA) signaling. Because R. solanacearum-infected plants suffer reduced water flow, we hypothesized that bacterial wilt physiologically mimics drought stress, which trehalose could mitigate. We found that R. solanacearum-infected plants differentially expressed drought-associated genes, including those involved in ABA and

Effects of precipitation, heat, and drought on incidence and expansion of coccidioidomycosis in western USA: a longitudinal surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: Drought is an understudied driver of infectious disease dynamics. Amidst the ongoing southwestern North American megadrought, California (USA) is having the driest multi-decadal period since 800 CE, exacerbated by anthropogenic warming. In this study, we aimed to examine the influence of drought on coccidioidomycosis, an emerging infectious disease in southwestern USA. METHODS: We analysed California census tract-level surveillance data from 2000 to 2020 using generalised additive models and distributed monthly lags on precipitation and temperature. We then developed an ensemble p

Analysis of the Nutritional Composition and Drought Tolerance Traits of Sweet Potato: Selection Criteria for Breeding Lines.

Sweet potato is an important world staple with the potential to address hunger and malnutrition. The Agricultural Research Council of South Africa has led sweet potato breeding efforts in the country since 1952 and released several important cultivars. More detailed quality assessments are necessary in addition to general breeding criteria. The present study investigated sweet potato cultivars and elite clones for (1) their nutritional composition; (2) biochemical reaction to drought stress; (3) correlate biochemical reaction to root yield for possible identification of screening methods for d

Persulfidation of Nitrate Reductase 2 Is Involved in l-Cysteine Desulfhydrase-Regulated Rice Drought Tolerance.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important signaling molecule that regulates diverse cellular signaling pathways through persulfidation. Our previous study revealed that H2S is involved in the improvement of rice drought tolerance. However, the corresponding enzymatic sources of H2S and its regulatory mechanism in response to drought stress are not clear. Here, we cloned and characterized a putative l-cysteine desulfhydrase (LCD) gene in rice, which encodes a protein possessing H2S-producing activity and was named OsLCD1. Overexpression of OsLCD1 results in enhanced H2S production, persulfidation

Root carbon and nutrient homeostasis determines downy oak sapling survival and recovery from drought.

The role of carbon (C) and nutrient uptake, allocation, storage and especially their interactions in survival and recovery of trees under increased frequencies and intensities of drought events is not well understood. A full factorial experiment with four soil water content regimes ranging from extreme drought to well-watered conditions and two fertilization levels was carried out. We aimed to investigate whether nutrient addition mitigates drought effects on downy oak (Quercus pubescens Willd.) and whether storage pools of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) are modified to enhance survival af

Introgression of Maize Diversity for Drought Tolerance: Subtropical Maize Landraces as Source of New Positive Variants.

Current climate change models predict an increased frequency and intensity of drought for much of the developing world within the next 30 years. These events will negatively affect maize yields, potentially leading to economic and social instability in many smallholder farming communities. Knowledge about the genetic resources available for traits related to drought tolerance has great importance in developing breeding program strategies. The aim of this research was to study a maize landrace introgression panel to identify chromosomal regions associated with a drought tolerance index. For tha

Disease or drought: environmental fluctuations release zebra from a potential pathogen-triggered ecological trap.

When a transmission hotspot for an environmentally persistent pathogen establishes in otherwise high-quality habitat, the disease may exert a strong impact on a host population. However, fluctuating environmental conditions lead to heterogeneity in habitat quality and animal habitat preference, which may interrupt the overlap between selected and risky habitats. We evaluated spatio-temporal patterns in anthrax mortalities in a plains zebra (Equus quagga) population in Etosha National Park, Namibia, incorporating remote-sensing and host telemetry data. A higher proportion of anthrax mortalities

Chloroplastic Os3BGlu6 contributes significantly to cellular ABA pools and impacts drought tolerance and photosynthesis in rice.

Cellular abscisic acid (ABA) concentration is determined by both de novo biosynthesis and recycling via β-glucosidase(s). However, which rice β-glucosidase(s) are involved in this process remains unknown. Here, we report on a chloroplastic β-glucosidase isoenzyme, Os3BGlu6, that functions in ABA recycling in rice. Disruption of Os3BGlu6 in rice resulted in dwarfism, lower ABA content in leaves, drought-sensitivity, lower photosynthesis rate and higher intercellular CO2 concentration. Os3BGlu6 could hydrolyze ABA-GE to ABA in vitro. The reversion and overexpression rice lines restored or increa

Compound-specific responses of phenolic metabolites in the bark of drought-stressed Salix daphnoides and Salix purpurea.

The bark of willows (Salix spp.) is rich in bioactive phenolic compounds from different compound classes and is therefore used as an herbal remedy. The accumulation of these secondary plant metabolites is influenced by environmental factors, including the availability of water. To analyze the influence of drought stress on the profile of phenolic metabolites in willow bark, a pot experiment with Salix daphnoides Vill. and Salix purpurea L. was conducted. Plants were subjected to three irrigation treatments for four and ten weeks: 65-75% field capacity (well-watered), 33-38% field capacity (mod

Exopolysaccharide producing rhizobacteria and their impact on growth and drought tolerance of wheat grown under rainfed conditions.

The demand for agricultural crops continues to escalate with an increasing population. To meet this demand, marginal land can be used as a sustainable source for increased plant productivity. However, moisture stress not only affects crop growth and productivity but also induces plants' susceptibility to various diseases. The positive role of plant growth hormone, salicylic acid (SA), on the defence systems of plants has been well documented. With this in mind, a combination of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and SA was used to evaluate its performance on wheat grown under rainfed

Alleviation of Drought Stress by Hydrogen Sulfide Is Partially Related to the Abscisic Acid Signaling Pathway in Wheat.

Little information is available describing the effects of exogenous H2S on the ABA pathway in the acquisition of drought tolerance in wheat. In this study, we investigated the physiological parameters, the transcription levels of several genes involved in the abscisic acid (ABA) metabolism pathway, and the ABA and H2S contents in wheat leaves and roots under drought stress in response to exogenous NaHS treatment. The results showed that pretreatment with NaHS significantly increased plant height and the leaf relative water content of seedlings under drought stress. Compared with drought stress

Roles of sodium hydrosulfide and sodium nitroprusside as priming molecules during drought acclimation in citrus plants.

Emerging evidence suggests that the gaseous molecules hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO) enhances plant acclimation to stress; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. In this work, we explored if pretreatment of citrus roots with NaHS (a H2S donor) or sodium nitroprusside (SNP, a NO donor) for 2 days (d) could elicit long-lasting priming effects to subsequent exposure to PEG-associated drought stress for 21 d following a 5 d acclimation period. Detailed physiological study documented that both pretreatments primed plants against drought stress. Analysis of the level of nit

Isolation and characterization of a cryptogein-like gene from drought and salt-treated Alternanthera philoxeroides roots.

Alligator weed, Alternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Grisb, is an amphibious plant with long thick fleshy roots that develop from adventitious roots under drought conditions. To clone differentially-expressed genes from the roots of A. philoxeroides we applied both mRNA differential display and rapid amplification of cDNA ends techniques. A cryptogein-like gene of A. philoxeroides, designated as ApCL, was cloned. On the basis of semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis results, we demonstrated that the ApCL gene was upregulated under drought and salt stress conditions. After ApCL was transferred to Pi
