[The comorbidity of learning difficulties and ADHD symptoms in primary-school-age children].

Children having difficulties in acquiring early literacy and mathematical skills often show an increased rate of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. This study provides data on the comorbidity rates of specific learning difficulties and ADHD symptoms. We analyzed the data of 273 children with learning difficulties despite an at least average IQ, 57 children with low IQ, and 270 children without learning difficulties and average IQ (comparison group). We assessed children’s IQ and school achievement using standardized achievement tests. ADHD symptoms were assessed via parents’ ratings.

Cognitive Risk Factors for Specific Learning Disorder: Processing Speed, Temporal Processing, and Working Memory.

High comorbidity rates between reading disorder (RD) and mathematics disorder (MD) indicate that, although the cognitive core deficits underlying these disorders are distinct, additional domain-general risk factors might be shared between the disorders. Three domain-general cognitive abilities were investigated in children with RD and MD: processing speed, temporal processing, and working memory. Since attention problems frequently co-occur with learning disorders, the study examined whether these three factors, which are known to be associated with attention problems, account for the comorbid

From vision to cognition: potential contributions of cerebral visual impairment to neurodevelopmental disorders.

Vision has a crucial role to play in human development and functioning. It is, therefore, not surprising that vision plays a fundamental role in the development of the child. As a consequence, an alteration in visual function is, therefore, likely to hinder the child's development. Although ocular disorders are well known, diagnosed and taken into account, cerebral visual impairments (CVI) resulting from post-chiasmatic damage are largely underdiagnosed. However, among the disorders resulting from an episode of perinatal asphyxia and/or associated with prematurity, or neonatal hypoglycaemia, C

A pure case of Gerstmann syndrome with a subangular lesion.

The four symptoms composing Gerstmann's syndrome were postulated to result from a common cognitive denominator (Grundstörung) by Gerstmann himself. He suggested that it is a disorder of the body schema restricted to the hand and fingers. The existence of a Grundstörung has since been contested. Here we suggest that a common psychoneurological factor does exist, but should be related to transformations of mental images rather than to the body schema. A patient (H.P.) was studied, who presented the four symptoms of Gerstmann's syndrome in the absence of any other neuropsychological disorders. MR

Associations Between Childhood Learning Disabilities and Adult-Age Mental Health Problems, Lack of Education, and Unemployment.

We studied the impact of diverse subtypes of learning disabilities (LD) on adult-age mental health, education, and employment by comparing the LD group ( n = 430) with a matched control group without a known history of LD ( n = 2,149). The clinical archived data were merged with lifelong register data on sickness allowances/disability pensions granted on the basis of psychiatric illnesses, reimbursements for psychoactive medication, having a degree after compulsory education, and having received unemployment allowances. Differences emerged between the LD and control groups in all outcomes, sug

Mapping Clinical Diagnoses Associated With Neurodiversity and Neurodivergence in Mental Health Research: A Scoping Review.

IMPORTANCE: The terms neurodivergence and neurodiversity are increasingly used across mental health and broader clinical literature, as well as in clinical practice, clinical service commissioning, and policy contexts, despite their lack of clinical and diagnostic specificity. OBJECTIVE: To quantitively map clinical diagnoses associated with the terms neurodivergence and neurodiversity in the empirical mental health literature through a scoping review conducted with experts with lived experience . EVIDENCE REVIEW: Following JBI methods and the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews, PubMed/Med

Examining tolerability, safety, and blinding in 1032 transcranial electrical stimulation sessions for children and adolescents with neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders.

The present study first extensively evaluated the tolerability, safety, and blinding of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) in paediatric clinical populations, composed of 92 children and adolescents (54 females, age range: 8-17 years), involving 1032 sessions across neuropsychiatric (i.e., anorexia nervosa) and neurodevelopmental (i.e., attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, developmental dyscalculia) conditions. It compared adverse events (AEs) occurrence between active and sham transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) condi

Deficits in or preservation of basic number processing in Parkinson's disease? A registered report.

Neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) have a huge impact on patients, caregivers, and the health-care system. To date, the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairments in PD has been established based on domain-general functions such as executive functions, attention, or working memory. However, specific numerical deficits observed in clinical practice have not yet been systematically investigated. PD-immanent deterioration of domain-general functions and domain-specific numerical areas suggests the mechanisms of both primary and secondary dyscalculia. The current study will s

Dementia in hippocampal sclerosis resembles frontotemporal dementia more than Alzheimer disease.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical course of pathologically diagnosed hippocampal sclerosis dementia (HSD). BACKGROUND: Dementia associated with HSD is incompletely characterized. Previous studies suggest similarities to both Alzheimer disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). METHODS: Case-control analysis of the clinical course of patients with HSD, FTD, and AD from a neuropathology autopsy series conducted by a university hospital. Case histories were reviewed. Cumulative prevalence of behavioral, cognitive, psychiatric, and language symptoms were compared between groups, as wa

Chromosome 14 linked familial Alzheimer's disease. A clinico-pathological study of a single pedigree.

The clinical features of three affected members of a British pedigree with familial Alzheimer's disease are presented. This pedigree is one of six included in an earlier study which demonstrated linkage to chromosome 14. The individuals were investigated clinically and neuropsychologically, using both PET and MRI over a 4-year period. Further information from three deceased individuals was obtained, including histopathological confirmation of Alzheimer's disease in one case which came to autopsy. The mean age at onset for this family was 43 years. Neurological examination revealed myoclonic je

[A case of anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome associated with subdural hematoma].

We report a case of a 47-year-old man with anti-phospholipid antibody syndrome associated with subdural hematoma. The patient had several episodes of arthritis during his thirties. He developed venous thrombosis in his right lower leg at the age of 35, when laboratory studies demonstrated prolongation of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and a biological false-positive result occurred on a syphilis test. When bulbar palsy and Horner's syndrome in the right eye suddenly appeared at the age of 42, he was diagnosed as having brain stem infarction. At the age of 47, he developed constru

A cognitive model for multidigit number reading: Inferences from individuals with selective impairments.

We propose a detailed cognitive model of multi-digit number reading. The model postulates separate processes for visual analysis of the digit string and for oral production of the verbal number. Within visual analysis, separate sub-processes encode the digit identities and the digit order, and additional sub-processes encode the number's decimal structure: its length, the positions of 0, and the way it is parsed into triplets (e.g., 314987 → 314,987). Verbal production consists of a process that generates the verbal structure of the number, and another process that retrieves the phonological f

[Contributions of neuroscience to the learning of numerical abilities].

INTRODUCTION: Mathematic difficulties are relatively frequent at school. With some frequency they appear associated to other troubles and learning disorders, thus provoking anxiety feelings in children. In case of not intervening on such difficulties their consequences may be extended until adulthood. Despite that, their intervention has not been widely administered, notably in the educational ambit. The main reason is that there is not a unique definition, which makes their detection not easy. However, some of the recent advances in neuroscience could improve this situation. AIM: To review a

A common variant in myosin-18B contributes to mathematical abilities in children with dyslexia and intraparietal sulcus variability in adults.

The ability to perform mathematical tasks is required in everyday life. Although heritability estimates suggest a genetic contribution, no previous study has conclusively identified a genetic risk variant for mathematical performance. Research has shown that the prevalence of mathematical disabilities is increased in children with dyslexia. We therefore correlated genome-wide data of 200 German children with spelling disability, with available quantitative data on mathematic ability. Replication of the top findings in additional dyslexia samples revealed that rs133885 was a genome-wide signifi

Exploring the Neural Substrates of Number Sense: A Perspective on Genetics, Behaviour and Neural Circuity.

Number sense is the intuitive, non-verbal ability to perceive and process numerical quantities without formal counting. This evolutionarily conserved trait, shared by different animal species, is supported by two mechanisms: the object tracking system (OTS) for small sets and the approximate number system (ANS) for larger quantities. Although historically viewed as distinct, these systems interact dynamically; their disruption is implicated in developmental dyscalculia and disorders such as Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), a chromosome microdeletion characterised by marked numerical and visuosp

Early predictors in language-based learning disabilities: a bibliometric analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Language-based learning disabilities (LBLD) refers to a spectrum of neurodevelopmental-associated disorders that are characterized by cognitive and behavioral differences in comprehending, processing and utilizing spoken and/or written language. The focus of this work was on identifying early predictors of three main specific LBLD including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and dysgraphia. METHODS: The Web of Science (WoS) was searched for literature related to (neurocognitive, neurophysiological, and neuroimaging) measurements used to identify early predictors of LBLD from 1991 to 25 Octo

Strengths and difficulties in children with specific learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: The study aims to investigate the social, emotional, and behavioral challenges in children with a specific learning disability (SLD) and to identify the factors that accompany these problems by screening with the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). METHODS: The descriptive study was conducted on 278 children with SLD. Strengths and difficulties in children were evaluated by the SDQ applied to their mothers. The percentage of cases above the cut-off limits of the SDQ was calculated. Chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis were used for analysis. RESUL

A Case of Overlap Posterior Cortical Atrophy and Logopenic Variant Primary Progressive Aphasia.

Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) and logopenic variant primary progressive aphasia (LvPPA) are considered early-onset dementias most commonly caused by Alzheimer pathology. PCA is characterized by a progressive decline in higher order visual processing functions, whereas LvPPA is a form of primary progressive aphasia. The clinical presentation of both syndromes is typically earlier in life relative to the more typical "amnestic" form of Alzheimer disease. Prominent language deficits have been well described in PCA. Here, we describe the case of a 56-year-old man presenting with overlapping ana
