[Causes of otalgia from outside the ear].

Two patients, a man aged 50 and a woman aged 61 years, complained about otalgia without a hearing disorder. Both patients exhibited slight mucosal redness of the upper airway at examination of the ear, nose, and throat, but no other abnormalities. Subsequent CT investigations of the ear and paranasal sinuses revealed no pathology in either patient. The first patient's condition deteriorated; he was eventually found to have a bronchial carcinoma that might have involved the vagal nerve. The second patient, who had a diaphragmatic hernia, improved dramatically once her daily dose of omeprazole h

[Otalgia and tinnitus in patients with craniomandibular dysfunctions].

AIMS OF THE STUDY: The high prevalence of ear, nose, and throat symptoms in patients with craniomandibular disorders seems to depend on the connection between both phenomena. The present study evaluates the connection between craniomandibular disorders (CMD) and otalgia or tinnitus, investigates the correlation between specific diagnoses of CMD with otalgia or tinnitus, and estimates the effects of treatment of CMD on these ear symptoms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The information from case histories, clinical examinations, and treatment results of 221 patients with CMD were coded and evaluated by

Eustachian tube obstruction: new technique for treatment.

The function of the eustachian tube is ventilation of the middle ear to equilibrate air pressure in the middle ear with atmospheric pressure. Obstruction of the middle ear produces a negative pressure in the middle ear due to absorption of the oxygen from the middle ear cavity, often leading to otalgia. This study was done on 30 patients complaining of otalgia. They were 16 males and 14 females. They were found to have eustachian tube obstruction by examination, and negative middle ear pressure by tympanometry. All patients were treated with a mixture of equal amounts of nitrous oxide and oxyg

[Thrombophlebitis of the lateral sinus. Apropos of a case].

About one case of septic sigmoid sinus thrombosis, the authors present various clinical and paraclinical elements of this rare pathology, whose entity are generally subtle for benign but also for serious forms. Although uncomplicated dural venous thrombosis carries an excellent prognosis with proper treatment, delay in diagnosis and institution of appropriate therapy may lead to serious, or even fatal, consequences. The modern literature is reviewed and the pathology, presentation and management of lateral sinus pathology is discussed.

Wegener's granulomatosis with otological disorders as primary symptoms.

Otological symptoms as initial manifestations of Wegener's granulomatosis have been observed in 3 patients. In one of them, symptoms consisted of a bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, improved by corticoid therapy. No other organ system was involved and laboratory tests remained within normal limits for 2 years after the onset of otological signs. In the other 2 patients, Wegener's granulomatosis manifested mainly as serous otitis media. Otologic involvement underscores the role of the otolaryngologist in the early diagnosis and treatment of this disease.

Paracetamol and ibuprofen fixed-dose combination for the management of acute mild-to-moderate pain in children: strengthening and enhancing of result of Nominal Group Technique through Delphi consensus.

BACKGROUND: Paracetamol and ibuprofen are the most commonly used drugs for pain treatment in children and their combination has shown improved analgesic effect compared to treatment with either drug alone. Current literature lacks specific guidelines regarding the settings in which this combination should be adopted. METHODS: The survey, conducted with Delphi methodology, involved 75 hospital and outpatient pediatricians with clinical experience in the management of pain in children. Pediatricians involved were asked to validate or not the results of the previous NominalGroup Tecnique (NGT) c

An Overview of the Tympanostomy Tube.

Otitis media is a disorder of the middle ear, which can occur at any age but is more common among infants and children. The patient usually presents with earaches, impaired hearing, and fever. If antibiotics and decongestants do not suit the patient, a myringotomy can be performed to achieve middle ear aeration. In myringotomy, a slit is created in the tympanic membrane, and fluid is removed with suction. In cases where myringotomy, aspiration, and medical care don't help and the fluid recurs, a tympanostomy tube is inserted to create continuous aeration of the middle ear. A tympanostomy tube

Severe skull base osteomyelitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa with successful outcome after prolonged outpatient therapy with continuous infusion of ceftazidime and oral ciprofloxacin: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Skull base osteomyelitis is an uncommon disease that usually complicates a malignant external otitis with temporal bone involvement. It affects predominantly diabetic and immunocompromised males and has a high mortality rate. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common causative organism. Currently, there is no consensus about the best therapeutic option. Here we describe a case of severe skull base osteomyelitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa with progressive palsy of cranial nerves that was successfully managed with prolonged outpatient continuous infusion of ceftazidime plus ora

Acupuncture and Kinesio Taping for the acute management of Bell's palsy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Bell's palsy is an idiopathic, acute peripheral palsy of the facial nerve that supplies the muscles of facial expression. Despite an expected 70% full recovery rate, up to 30% of patients are left with potentially disfiguring facial weakness, involuntary movements, or persistent lacrimation. The most frequently used treatment options are corticosteroids and antiviral drugs. However, accompanying clinical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, gastrointestinal disturbances, polypharmacy of geriatric patients, and significant sequelae ratios, indicate the need for s

Sternocleidomastoid Tendinopathy in a Pediatric Athlete.

To our knowledge, this case report describes the first known case of sternocleidomastoid tendinopathy, occurring in a pediatric athlete who had gone undiagnosed for a period of 2 yrs. She presented to our pain clinic with bilateral otalgia, occipital headaches, and occasional bouts of tinnitus and dizziness. An extensive workup by otolaryngology (ENT) including computed tomography imaging of the head, ear pressure equalization, and an attempt at therapeutic tonsillectomy left her with no diagnosis and no symptom relief. A clinical diagnosis of sternocleidomastoid tendinopathy was made at the i

Undifferentiated nasopharyngeal cancer extending to maxillary sinus: a case report.

Undifferentiated nasopharyngeal cancer of the cavum (UCNT) is the most frequent neoplasm of the nasopharynx, having a close relationship with exposure to Epstein-Barr virus. It has a high potential for locoregional or distant invasion which are the cause of some treatment failures. The extension to the maxillary sinus is rarely described. We report here the case of a 38-year-old patient with headaches associated with epistaxis, left otalgia and facial pain. Examination by anterior rhinoscopy objectively revealed a polylobed ulcerating mass. Otoscopic examination revealed a left seromucous otit

Luc's abscess as an unlucky complication of mastoiditis.

Luc's abscess is a rare but important complication of acute otitis media (AOM), whereby infection spreads from the middle ear, resulting in a subperiosteal collection beneath the temporal muscle. Unlike other extracranial abscesses relating to AOM, Luc's abscess is not believed to involve the mastoid bone. We present the case of a patient with a Luc's abscess with mastoid involvement and discuss its successful management. We believe that patients presenting with a subperiosteal collection beneath the temporal muscle and mastoiditis may represent a different group of patients to those described

Huge middle ear adenoma with delayed facial nerve paralysis.

Middle ear adenoma is a rare disease that arises from the mucosa of the middle ear. Only a few cases of associated facial nerve paralysis have been reported. Facial nerve involvement is most likely related to nerve compression rather than tumor invasion of the nerve. We describe a case of a huge middle ear adenoma in a 63-year-old man. He presented with a 1-month history of right-sided otalgia, otorrhea, and facial palsy; he also had a 10-year history of right-sided hearing loss. A tympanomastoidectomy was performed. Intraoperatively, the tumor was found to fill the middle ear cavity as well a

Clinical trials assessing ototopical agents in the treatment of pain associated with acute otitis media in children.

Otalgia (ear pain) is one of the characteristic symptoms and best predictor of acute otitis media (AOM) in children. Although oral pain medications are the current mainstay for the treatment of AOM-associated otalgia, ototopical agents have been investigated as an alternative treatment strategy. To permit review and assessment of this treatment modality, a systematic literature search was conducted to identify all randomized, controlled trials of ototopical agents. Four trials were identified, including those examining ototopical benzocaine in combination with antipyrine, lidocaine, tetracaine
