From Who experiences stress to When It Occurs: Revisiting Lazarus' transactional model of stress using an ecological momentary assessment framework.

According to the Transactional Model of Stress, stress responses arise from one's perceptions of situational relevance (primary appraisal) and coping resources (secondary appraisal) as being insufficient. Although the model assumes moment-to-moment within-person variability, most research evidence stems from cross-sectional study designs. Therefore, this study applies Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to test the dynamic interplay between primary and secondary appraisals and fluctuations in perceived stress. We used EMA data from the TrackYourStress platform to examine both interindividual

Smartphone-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment to Monitor Opioid Use and Overdose Among People Who Use Opioids: Prospective Observational Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Opioids account for 76% of drug overdose deaths in the United States, with nearly 80,000 opioid overdose deaths annually. The risk of overdose is dynamic and influenced by rapidly changing behaviors and contexts that are not well captured by retrospective or infrequent assessments. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) allows repeated near real-time reporting of behaviors and experiences in natural settings. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of smartphone-based EMA among people who use opioids to monitor opioid use, overdose experiences, and naloxon

Ecological Momentary Assessment of Associations Between Sleep Quality, Stress, and Pain Among Women in Midlife with Risk for Cardiovascular Disease.

Women in midlife (ages 40-60) are at elevated risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), and daily experiences such as stress, physical pain, and poor sleep quality exacerbate this risk. Understanding the severity and temporal sequencing of these experiences as they occur in daily life will inform health promotion efforts for this vulnerable group. To achieve these goals, we used ecological momentary assessment to clarify the occurrence, severity, and temporal associations between momentary stress and pain, and tested for moderating effects of subjective sleep quality on these associatio

Temporal variations of depressive symptoms in patients with bipolar, borderline personality, and major depressive disorder: an ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Identifying the principal and comorbid diagnoses of a patient suffering from a major depressive episode (MDE) is crucial. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) may help identify patterns of symptom fluctuations characteristic of a specific disorder and thus potentially improve the differential diagnostics. METHODS: This EMA study aimed to investigate the real-time group differences in temporal variations of depressive symptoms in patients with an ongoing MDE and a diagnosis of bipolar (BD; n = 17), borderline personality (BPD; n = 15), or major depressive disorder (MDD; n = 45) an

Predicting urges for non-suicidal self-injury using cardiac autonomic indices in outpatient adolescents: A pilot ecological momentary assessment study.

AIMS: The purpose of the present study was to examine cardiac autonomic indices as potential short-term predictors of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) urges and NSSI incidents in adolescents at high risk for NSSI. METHODS: The sample consisted of 29 female adolescents with NSSI aged 13-17 years recruited from a specialized outpatient clinic for adolescent risk-taking and self-harming behavior. During one weekend, participants wore an ECG belt that continuously recorded data on heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV) and accelerometry. They also completed hourly ecological momentary asses

Analyzing Trends in Suicidal Thoughts Among Patients With Psychosis in India: Exploratory Secondary Analysis of Smartphone Ecological Momentary Assessment Data.

BACKGROUND: India has the world's largest number of suicides, but there is little research on the trends in suicidal thoughts, especially for individuals with psychosis. More research is necessary to develop preventive interventions. Smartphone-based ecological momentary assessments (EMAs) can assess dynamic symptoms, but most EMA studies are conducted in higher income settings and have shorter (≤1 month) follow-up periods. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the duration of onset to offset of suicidal ideation (SI) in tertiary hospital outpatients with psychosis in India. METHODS: This s

Affect dimensions and variability during major depressive episodes: Ecological momentary assessment of unipolar, bipolar, and borderline patients and healthy controls.

Differentiating major depressive episodes (MDEs) of major depressive disorder (MDD), bipolar disorder (MDE/BD) and the MDEs comorbid with borderline personality disorder (MDE/BPD) is crucial for appropriate treatment, and knowledge of phenomenological differences may aid this. However, studies comparing affect experiences of these three patient groups and healthy subjects are scarce. In our study, participants (N = 114), including patients with MDD (n = 34), MDE/BD (n = 27), and MDE/BPD (n = 24), and healthy controls (HC, n = 29) responded to ecological momentary assessment (EMA) with ten circ

Alcohol use and intimate partner violence victimization among young adults with a history of perpetration: An ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health concern among young adults and has shown a consistent association with alcohol use. However, previous research has used cross-sectional and daily diary designs that may fail to pinpoint the effects of alcohol use within several hours of IPV occurring. The present study used novel ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methods to investigate the bidirectional effect of alcohol use and IPV victimization among young adults with a history of IPV perpetration. METHODS: One hundred and sixty-eight young adults (age 18-25 years) in

Transdermal sensor features correlate with ecological momentary assessment drinking reports and predict alcohol-related consequences in young adults' natural settings.

BACKGROUND: Wearable transdermal alcohol concentration (TAC) sensors allow passive monitoring of alcohol concentration in natural settings and measurement of multiple features from drinking episodes, including peak intoxication level, speed of intoxication (absorption rate) and elimination, and duration. These passively collected features extend commonly used self-reported drink counts and may facilitate the prediction of alcohol-related consequences in natural settings, aiding risk stratification and prevention efforts. METHOD: A total of 222 young adults aged 21-29 (M age = 22.3, 64% female

Using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to Study Sex Events Among Very High-Risk Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM).

MSM continue to represent the largest share of new HIV infections in the United States each year due to high infectivity associated with unprotected anal sex. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) has the potential to provide a unique view of how high-risk sexual events occur in the real world and can impart detailed information about aspects of decision-making, antecedents, and consequences that accompany these events. EMA may also produce more accurate data on sexual behavior by assessing it soon after its occurrence. We conducted a study involving 12 high-risk MSM to explore the acceptabili

Psychometric properties and validity of a Mobile Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (MPHQ-9) for ecological momentary assessment in depressed adults.

Ecological momentary assessment is well-suited for capturing rapid symptom dynamics, and it is increasingly used to measure depression symptoms. However, few depression measures are validated for ecological momentary assessment use in the manner expected for traditional questionnaires. Therefore, this study examined the internal consistency, longitudinal stability, and convergent validity of the Mobile Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (MPHQ-9), a version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) modified for ecological momentary assessment. Depressed participants (N = 280; female = 83.93%; W

Tell me why: An ecological momentary assessment study of "Нет данных" substance use motive endorsement and the predictive utility of affect.

BACKGROUND: Theoretical models of substance use motives emphasize the role of affect when making decisions about use and propose that there are moments during which decisions about use are made outside of conscious awareness or without clarity about why. However, to our knowledge, no previous research has examined the frequency and phenomenology of this motivational state. This study sought to fill this gap by introducing an "I don't know" option to a substance use motive questionnaire ("Нет данных" motive). METHODS: Fifty young adults (age=18-24) with substance use disorder (32 % alcohol use di

Social undermining of weight management behaviors among young adult African American women: an ecological momentary assessment and mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: Social undermining of weight management behaviors represents a meaningful intervention target as social undermining may lead to dietary and exercise lapses. Young adult African American women, who exhibit the highest prevalence of obesity compared to young adults of all other races and ethnicities, may experience different types of social undermining or respond differently to social undermining due to various cultural factors (eg, cultural value of traditional foods). PURPOSE: This study characterizes the sources and settings of weight management social undermining experiences of

Craving for opioid and cannabis use among adults with chronic pain: Insights from a 30-day ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Craving is an aversive state and risk factor for progression to nonmedical substance use. The aims of this secondary analysis of Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) data were 1) to test whether craving was elevated on days of co-use of opioids and cannabis, and 2) to examine pain, pain catastrophizing, affect, and stress as risk factors for current and next-moment craving, among patients with chronic pain. METHODS: Adults with chronic pain (N = 46) who used both opioids and cannabis were recruited online and completed a 30-day EMA study, consisting of four momentary surveys per

Daily mobility, activity and environmental determinants of stress in ecological momentary assessment (EMA) and GPS studies: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Stress is omnipresent in our everyday lives and a key risk factor for our physical and mental health. Yet little is known about the impact of geographic life environments, linked to our daily activities and mobility patterns, on our momentary and daily stress levels. We propose this review to gather evidence on the spatio-temporal determinants of momentary or daily stress in studies using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) or experience sampling methods (ESM) in addition to global positioning systems (GPS) tracking. We will focus on the spatio-temporal definition and modelling

Identifying Person-Specific Drivers of Depression in Adolescents: Protocol for a Smartphone-Based Ecological Momentary Assessment and Passive Sensing Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is marked by an increasing risk of depression and is an optimal window for prevention and early intervention. Personalizing interventions may be one way to maximize therapeutic benefit, especially given the marked heterogeneity in depressive presentations. However, empirical evidence that can guide personalized intervention for youth is lacking. Identifying person-specific symptom drivers during adolescence could improve outcomes by accounting for both developmental and individual differences. OBJECTIVE: This study leverages adolescents' everyday smartphone use to inve

Affective processes underlying restrictive eating in atypical anorexia nervosa: Comparisons to anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa using ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVE: Certain symptom and risk/maintenance factor similarities between individuals with atypical anorexia nervosa (AN) and 'typical' AN have been documented, but few studies have investigated how atypical AN compares to bulimia nervosa (BN). Further, the role of affective mechanisms in maintaining restrictive eating in atypical AN has not been examined. The current study investigated whether atypical AN resembles AN and/or BN on affect-related processes using questionnaires and ecological momentary assessment (EMA). METHOD: Women with atypical AN (n = 24), AN-restrictive subtype, (n = 27

Temporal interaction of suicidal ideations and behaviors with loneliness in persistent depressive disorder - a feasibility study using ecological momentary assessment.

Individuals with persistent depressive disorder (PDD) are at increased risk for suicidality. Suicidality may be precipitated by loneliness. However, their temporal interplay in PDD has not been studied. We conducted a feasibility study using ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to measure short-term courses of suicidality and loneliness in 20 inpatients with PDD and current suicidality. EMA adherence of 13 completers was 81.3%. Suicidal ideations and loneliness varied with one standard deviation over three to six hours. This pilot study confirmed the feasibility of EMA in PDD and provided new
