Some afferent and efferent connections of the vestibular nuclear complex in the red-eared turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans.

In the present study some afferent, commissural, and efferent connections of the vestibular nuclear complex in the turtle Pseudemys scripta elegans were demonstrated with the HRP tracing technique. Afferent projections to the vestibular nuclei were found to arise in the nucleus of the basal optic root, the interstitial nucleus of the fasciculus longitudinalis medialis, the medial and lateral cerebellar nuclei, the perihypoglossal nuclear complex, and the reticular formation. Distinct commissural projections appeared to arise in the dorsolateral, ventromedial, and descending vestibular nuclei.

Therapeutic Potential of Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

The vagus nerve is a mixed nerve, comprising 80% afferent fibers and 20% efferent fibers. It allows a bidirectional communication between the central nervous system and the digestive tract. It has a dual anti-inflammatory properties via activation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis, by its afferents, but also through a vago-vagal inflammatory reflex involving an afferent (vagal) and an efferent (vagal) arm, called the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway. Indeed, the release of acetylcholine at the end of its efferent fibers is able to inhibit the release of tumor necrosis factor (TNF

The effects of anesthesia on otoacoustic emissions.

We have measured transient-evoked and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) in the chinchilla and compared them in the awake and anesthetized animal (using either ketamine or barbiturate agents). We report a significant increase in OAE amplitudes during anesthesia, particularly using ketamine. These effects are most evident for transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) as measured in the non-linear mode. Our data support the hypothesis that tonic activity levels in cochlear efferents may be reduced by anesthetic effects, either directly or indirectly (e.g., by general reduction

The Cholinergic Anti-Inflammatory Pathway as a Conceptual Framework to Treat Inflammation-Mediated Renal Injury.

BACKGROUND: The cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, positioned at the interface of the nervous and immune systems, is the efferent limb of the "inflammatory reflex" which mainly signals through the vagus nerve. As such, the brain can modulate peripheral inflammatory responses by the activation of vagal efferent fibers. Importantly, immune cells in the spleen express most cholinergic system components such as acetylcholine (ACh), choline acetyltransferase, acetylcholinesterase, and both muscarinic and nicotinic ACh receptors, making communication between both systems possible. In general, th

Adhesion molecule Amigo2 is involved in the fasciculation process of the fasciculus retroflexus.

BACKGROUND: The fasciculus retroflexus is the prominent efferent pathway from the habenular complex. Medial habenular axons form a core packet whereas lateral habenular axons course in a surrounding shell. Both groups of fibers share the same initial pathway but differ in the final segment of the tract, supposedly regulated by surface molecules. The gene Amigo2 codes for a membrane adhesion molecule with an immunoglobulin-like domain 2 and is selectively expressed in the medial habenula. We present it as a candidate for controlling the fasciculation behavior of medial habenula axons. RESULTS:

Transcriptional response of the heart to vagus nerve stimulation.

Heart failure is a major clinical problem, with treatments involving medication, devices, and emerging neuromodulation therapies such as vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). Considering the ongoing interest in using VNS to treat cardiovascular disease it is important to understand the genetic and molecular changes developing in the heart in response to this form of autonomic neuromodulation. This experimental animal (rat) study investigated the immediate transcriptional response of the ventricular myocardium to selective stimulation of vagal efferent activity using an optogenetic approach. Vagal pre

Branchial innervation.

Inspection of the dorsal end of fish gills reveals an impressive set of nerve trunks, connecting the gills to the brain. These trunks are branches of cranial nerves VII (the facial) and especially IX (the glossopharyngeal) and X (the vagus). The nerve trunks carry a variety of nervous pathways to and from the gills. A substantial fraction of the nerves running in the branchial trunks carry afferent (sensory) information from receptors within the gills. There are also efferent (motor) pathways, which control muscles within the gills, blood flow patterns and possibly secretory functions. Underta

Central mesencephalic reticular formation control of the near response: lens accommodation circuits.

To view a nearby target, the three components of the near response are brought into play: 1) the eyes are converged through contraction of the medial rectus muscles to direct both foveae at the target, 2) the ciliary muscle contracts to allow the lens to thicken, increasing its refractive power to focus the near target on the retina, and 3) the pupil constricts to increase depth of field. In this study, we utilized retrograde transsynaptic transport of the N2c strain of rabies virus injected into the ciliary body of one eye of macaque monkeys to identify premotor neurons that control lens acco

Case Studies in Neuroscience: Evidence of motor thalamus reorganization following bilateral forearm amputations.

Following injury, functional improvement can result from central nervous system plasticity. Use-dependent plasticity of motor systems is evident, for example, in recovery of function resulting from rehabilitative interventions. Here, we present a single patient who underwent bilateral microelectrode-guided stereotactic implantation of deep brain stimulating leads for the treatment of essential tremor 52 yr following bilateral arm amputations. The tremor affected his upper extremities and had rendered him unable to perform fine motor tasks with his prostheses, significantly reducing his indepen

Functional lesional neurosurgery for tremor-a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The recent introduction of incision-less lesional neurosurgery using Gamma Knife and MRI-guided focused ultrasound has revived interest in lesional treatment options for tremor disorders. Preliminary literature researches reveal that the consistency of treatment effects after lesional neurosurgery for tremor has not formally been assessed yet. Similarly, the efficacy of different targets for lesional treatment and incidence of persistent side effects of lesional neurosurgical interventions has not been comprehensively assessed. This work therefore aims to describe a suitable proc

Constituent ratio of motor fibers from the C5-C7 spinal nerves in the radial nerve is greater in pup rats than in adult rats.

Clinically, injuries of C5-C7 of the brachial plexus cause falling of the wrist and fingers in infants but not in adults unless 4 consecutive spinal nerves are injured. The purpose of this study was to compare the constituent difference of spinal nerves in the radial nerve between pup and adult rats.A group of 16 pup rats and a group of 16 adult rats were each divided into 2 groups of 8 (P1 and A1 groups, C5-C6 were divided; P2 and A2 groups, C5-C7 were divided]). A nerve conduction study and histological examination were performed to evaluate radial nerve innervation to the extensor digitorum

Measurement of medial olivocochlear efferent activity in humans: comparison of different distortion product otoacoustic emission-based paradigms.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the suitability of contralateral suppression (CS) of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) for measurement of activity of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents. BACKGROUND: The MOC efferent system has been shown to be involved in sound discrimination, selective attention to tones, sound localization, and protection of the cochlea against noise. A great variety of paradigms for measurement of MOC activity by CS of OAE (MOC reflex [MOCR]), has been described. An issue of this approach is the dependence of the CS values on stimulus parameters, especially when

Towards an understanding of unique and shared pathways in the psychopathophysiology of ADHD.

Most attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) research has compared cases with unaffected controls. This has led to many associations, but uncertainties about their specificity to ADHD in contrast with other disorders. We present a selective review of research, comparing ADHD with other disorders in neuropsychological, neurobiological and genetic correlates. So far, a specific pathophysiological pathway has not been identified. ADHD is probably not specifically associated with executive function deficits. It is possible, but not yet established, that ADHD symptoms may be more specifical

Estimation of self-turning in the dark: comparison between active and passive rotation.

The present work compares passive and active rotations in darkness with the aim of characterizing the contribution of efferent and proprioceptive information to the perception of angular displacement. The perception of angular displacements was measured in 12 naive subjects (Ss), who either stood on a rotating platform (passive mode, P) or actively turned about their vertical axis by stepping around "on the spot" on a stationary platform (active mode, A). Rotations consisted of short acceleration epochs followed by constant velocity periods of 18.5, 37, and 55 degrees /s, with angular displace

Efferent limb of the coronary vasoconstrictor reflex elicited by distension of the descending colon in anesthetized dogs.

Distension of the descending colon elicits reflex coronary vasoconstriction. To study the efferent branch of this reflex, experiments were performed on 5 dogs anesthetized with pentobarbitone. A pouch was formed from the distal 15 cm of the descending colon and distended at constant pressure (54 +/- 8.9 mmHg) with warm Ringer solution from a pressurized bottle. During distensions of the colon, arterial blood pressure and heart rate were kept constant by the withdrawal of blood and pacing of the heart, respectively. Experiments were performed before and after intravenous bretylium tosylate (10

Anatomical study of the final common pathway for vocalization in the cat.

Vocalization, the nonverbal production of sound, can be elicited in many vertebrates by stimulation in several regions of the limbic system but most easily in the caudal periaqueductal gray (PAG). This study shows that a specific cell group in the lateral part of the caudal PAG and in the tegmentum just lateral to it projects bilaterally to the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) in the caudal medulla oblongata. Similar but much weaker projections are derived from the dorsal PAG. Neurons in the NRA in turn project via a contralateral pathway through the ventral funiculus of the spinal cord to motoneur

Cerebellar efferent fibers around the dentate nucleus. Pathological anatomy in olivo-ponto-cerebellar and dentato-pallido-luysian atrophy.

In patients with olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA), the deep cerebellar white matter showed evidence of severe degeneration and gliosis. However, the circumferential white matter enclosing the dentate nucleus was less involved. In addition, the Holzer stain verified the presence of mild gliosis inside the wrinkled band of the dentate gray matter. In contrast, dentato-rubro-pallido-luysian atrophy (DRPLA) affected the mantle layer covering the dentate nucleus. The fibers encircling the dentate nucleus, which degenerate in DRPLA and are spared in OPCA, are anatomically noticeable to be denta

Circadian rhythms in vasopressin deficient rats.

Circadian rhythms in wheel running and drinking behavior were investigated using heterozygous an homozygous (diabetes insipidus) female Brattleboro rats Despite the lack of vasopressin in the suprachiasmatic nuclei of the diabetic rats, they showed coherent rhythms, both in cyclic light and in constant light. However, the periods of the free-running rhythms were longer for the diabetic rats, they were less active, and, of course, were severely polydipsic. Replacement treatment with systemic infusions of vasopressin reversed the polydipsia but did not affect the other measures.

Distribution of the Na,K-ATPase alpha subunit in the rat spiral ganglion and organ of corti.

Processing of sound in the cochlea involves both afferent and efferent innervation. The Na,K-ATPase (NKA) is essential for cells that maintain hyperpolarized membrane potentials and sodium and potassium concentration gradients. Heterogeneity of NKA subunit expression is one mechanism that tailors physiology to particular cellular demands. Therefore, to provide insight into molecular differences that distinguish the various innervation pathways in the cochlea, we performed a variety of double labeling experiments with antibodies against three of the alpha isoforms of the NKA (NKA alpha 1-3) and
