[Combined convergent elbow dislocation with posterior luxation of the humeroulnar joint and radial head comminuted fracture in adults].

Transposition of the proximal radioulnar joint, so-called convergent elbow dislocation, is an extremely rare injury whereby the proximal radius crosses over the proximal ulnar and converges medially. This injury can occur in isolation or even less frequently in association with a posterior humeroulnar dislocation. Open reduction is almost always necessary. The diagnosis is frequently delayed as the injury is easily overlooked. In the literature, 13 cases in children and 2 in adults have so far been described. This is the first report of a combined elbow dislocation (posterior and convergent) w

Prominent synovial plicae in radiocapitellar joints as a potential cause of lateral elbow pain: clinico-radiologic correlation.

BACKGROUND: Thickened synovial plicae in the radiocapitellar joint have been reported as a cause of lateral elbow pain. However, few reports regarding diagnosis based on detailed physical examination and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings are available. The aims of this study were to characterize the clinical manifestations of this syndrome and to investigate the clinical outcomes of arthroscopic surgery. METHODS: We analyzed 20 patients who received a diagnosis of plica syndrome and underwent arthroscopic débridement between 2006 and 2011. The diagnosis was based on physical examinati

Tubercular arthritis of the elbow joint following olecranon fracture fixation and the role of TGF-beta in its pathogenesis.

Tuberculosis (TB) occurring after a closed bone fracture in the patient with no history of TB and no evidence of TB infection at the time of initial fracture is a rare entity. We report one such case of a 48-year-old female, who presented in the emergency department with an olecranon fracture which was open reduced and internally fixed with tension band wiring. Patient presented in the outpatient department with serosanguineous discharge at 3 weeks after surgery. The discharge was sent for culture and sensitivity tests, and the patient was managed by antibiotics and daily dressings. There was

Snapping elbow caused by hypertrophic synovial plica in the radiohumeral joint: a report of three cases and review of literature.

The snapping elbow caused by hypertrophic synovial radiohumeral plica is a rare form of lateral elbow impingement. In this article we report on hypertrophic radiohumeral synovial folds in three male patients, aged 54, 65 and 27 years. All three patients suffered isolated lateral elbow pain, painful snapping and unsuccessful conservative treatment over at least 5 months (range 5-9 months, mean 7.7 months) prior to surgical treatment. None of the patients had lateral epicondylitis, instability, osteochondrosis dissecans, loose bodies, arthritis or neurological disorders. Upon clinical examinatio

The use of a proximally based posterior interosseous adipofascial flap to prevent recurrence of synostosis of the elbow joint and forearm.

We report on four children in whom a proximally based, posterior interosseous artery adipofascial flap was used as an adjunct to surgical resection of synostoses of the forearm and elbow. Three traumatic radio-ulnar and one congenital humero-radial synostoses were treated. The postoperative pronation to supination arc of motion was excellent in all of the traumatic cases and fair in the congenital case.

Evaluation of a novel elbow joint torque measurement device in healthy subjects and stroke patients: a randomized trial.

Current clinical practice lacks quantitative assessment methods for elbow joint movements. In response to existing research limitations, this study introduces the innovative elbow joint torque measurement device (EJTMD), which concurrently measures muscle strength and active range of motion (AROM) using a five-bar linkage system governed by a sliding mode control algorithm. Healthy subjects (n = 22) and stroke patients (n = 22) were recruited in a randomized trial. Each participant underwent two measurement. EJTMD or traditional tools like a protractor and a muscle strength tester. Participant

Analysing plate fixation of a comminuted fracture of the proximal ulna in relation to the elbow joint: a finite element study.

This study investigated the biomechanical behavior of four different screw configurations used to fix comminuted proximal ulna fractures with a locking compression plate (LCP), via a detailed finite element model based on realistic anatomical geometry. The model incorporated realistic anatomical geometry including both cortical and cancellous bone, soft tissue constraints, and loading conditions representing the physiological self-weight of the forearm, with the humerus fixed at its proximal end. The stress distribution on the plate, strain intensity within the bone tissue, and interfragmentar

Examining the changes in strength and mechanical property of dynamic stabilizers of the medial elbow joint through repetitive pitching.

BACKGROUND: The flexor-pronator muscles (FPM) and their common tendon (CT) are essential in protecting the medial ulnar collateral ligament against elbow valgus stress during pitching. This study aimed to investigate the effect of repetitive pitching on FPM strength and CT stiffness. METHODS: Fifteen healthy males (mean age: 21.8 ± 1.3 years old) with over 5 years of baseball experience performed a series of 100 full-effort fastball pitches. We measured grip and isolated digital flexion strength of the second, third, and fourth digits before and after the pitching task. The decline in muscle

Subcutaneous Calcification and Fixed Flexion Deformity of the Right Elbow Joint in a Child with a GNAS Mutation: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: The art of medicine glorifies when a clinician listens carefully to the patient's story, gives a thorough examination, performs appropriate investigations, and finally links findings together to reach a definite diagnosis. An interesting case was reported here, highlighting the integration of different symptoms and manifestations with some relevant biochemical investigations to reach a final diagnosis. To the best of our knowledge, fixed flexion deformity, as a complication of subcutaneous calcification, has not been previously reported in a child with Albright hereditary osteody

Increased articular exposure of the lateral elbow joint with the anconeus approach compared to the Kocher approach: a cadaver study.

INTRODUCTION: The Kocher approach is the workhorse approach to the lateral elbow. However, the exposure is often limited, particularly for open reduction. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively compare the articular exposure of the anconeus and Kocher approaches to the lateral elbow. METHODS: Eight surgical approaches (four Kocher and four Anconeus) were performed on four fresh cadavers. The right elbows of the first two specimens were dissected via the Kocher approach, and the left elbows via the anconeus approach. For the remaining two specimens, the laterality of the approaches was

Dynamic Analysis of the Abnormal Isometric Strength Movement Pattern between Shoulder and Elbow Joint in Patients with Hemiplegia.

Patients with hemiplegia usually have weak muscle selectivity and usually perform strength at a secondary joint (secondary strength) during performing a strength at one joint (primary strength). The abnormal strength pattern between shoulder and elbow joint has been analyzed by the maximum value while the performing process with strength changing from 0 to maximum then to 0 was a dynamic process. The objective of this study was to develop a method to dynamically analyze the strength changing process. Ten patients were asked to perform four group asks (maximum and 50% maximum voluntary strength

Multiple extra-articular synovial cysts accompanied by rheumatoid arthritis in the bilateral elbow joints: A case report.

RATIONALE: Synovial cysts are well known in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and most common in the popliteal fossa. They may produce lots of local symptoms and complaints, which may present initially as an unrelated clinical condition. Few studies have reported multiple extra-articular synovial cysts (MESCs) in the RA patients. Early diagnosis is crucial for patient treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 50-year-old man without any special clinical histories found a soya bean size bump at the left elbow medially, then multiple lumps were found at bilateral elbows and gradually increasing. No pain, no acti

Tuberculosis of elbow and wrist joints - usefulness of high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in morphological changes evaluation.

More than one per cent of Welsh children are in public care, the majority of whom are aged 5-15 years and living in foster care. Well-being is at the heart of the Social Services and Well-Being (Wales) Act 2014. Under the Act, services are mandated to support the well-being of those they work with, including children who are in out-of-home care. The views of the children on what matters to their well-being are understood to be central to decisions about their care. International advances in researching child well-being has led to an understanding of the central importance of children's subject

Combined semi-constrained total distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) arthroplasty and radial head arthroplasty for severe, concomitant rheumatoid disease of the wrist and elbow joints.

Semi-constrained total distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) arthroplasty with Aptis-Scheker implant has demonstrated excellent results in patients with end-stage rheumatoid arthritis (RA) of the wrist. However, clinical success of the Scheker implant in restoring range of motion may be limited in patients with concomitant degenerative disease at the proximal radioulnar joint and radiocapitellar joint, which work in tandem with the DRUJ to allow pronosupination of the forearm. Among treatment options for elbow arthritis, standalone radial head arthroplasty remains poorly studied in the context of RA,

Associations between upper trunk rotation kinematics, shoulder and elbow joint kinetics and pitching performance in Australian baseball pitchers.

Early upper trunk rotation has been associated with higher arm kinetics in American baseball pitchers. However, it has not been investigated in Australian pitchers. The purposes of this study were: (1) to investigate the reliability of 3D optoelectronic measurements of pitching mechanics; and (2) to examine the relationships between segmental angular kinematics (pelvis and trunk), arm kinetics and pitching performance (ball velocity and spin rate) in Australian pitchers. 16 healthy male amateur pitchers (age 25.4 ± .7.8 yrs) were recruited to participate. Fastballs were assessed by Vicon 3D mo
